  • Creating hard drive backup images efficiently

    We are in the process of pruning our directories to recuperate some disk space. The 'algorithm' for the pruning/backup process consists of a list of directories and, for each one of them, a set of rules, e.g. 'compress *.bin', 'move *.blah', 'delete *.crap', 'leave *.important'; these rules change from directory to directory but are well known. The compressed and moved files are stored in a temporary file system, burned onto a blue ray, tested within the blue ray, and, finally, deleted from their original locations. I am doing this in Python (basically a walk statement with a dictionary with the rules for each extension in each folder). Do you recommend a better methodology for pruning file systems? How do you do it? We run on Linux.

    Currently, I am working on a product where we have an SMS text advertising system, and using this, we setup advertising campaigns for clients, and later these campaigns are sent to the end users. This is very similar to Google Adwords, but targeted to Mobile users via SMS. Just to give an overview of the system Each Campaign is mapped to an advertiser Campaign has start date and end date Campaign has a filter condition(s) or query to select the target user base from our database (to whom we send Campaigns) Target user base can be fixed, for e.g send campaign to 10000 users Target user base can also be dynamic based on query condition, for e.g send campaign to users who are active and from a particular state, district, town etc. (this way user base will be keep changing on daily basis) Campaign can have multiple campaign messages Each campaign message has start date and end date Each campaign message can have multiple message texts for different locales, for e.g English,Hindi,Telugu etc After creating an advertisement campaign, we run daily night job to provision the target user base for that a particular campaign in a separate table, and another daily job runs on morning times and checks provisioned table for campaigns and targeted users and sends the campaign to users via SMS. Problem is, current UI for creating advertising campaigns is designed in a very technical manner, I mean, normal user or business owner or clients can not use the UI to create a campaign. Below are reasons why the UI is very technical in nature Filter condition(s) or query input filed, takes user ids or mobile numbers or SQL queries. Most of times or almost every time, we use big SQL queries So we end up storing SQL queries in a database for a campaign, later we use this SQL query to fetch targeted user base. For scheduling these campaigns, we have input filed on UI which takes quartz cron expression(s) ( for e.g. send campaign on "0 0 9 1-10 MAR 2012" ), again very technical in nature Normal user or business owner, can not use the UI for creating campaigns for reasons mentioned above, Currently, we ourself (developers) helping clients to setup/create campaigns. we are trying to re-design the UI to make it more user friendly so that any user can go to UI and create an advertisement campaign by himself. I am thinking of re-designing the current UI similar to Google Adwords interface, especially for selecting target users based on user geography like country, state, city etc. I also need to select users based user subscription(s), which might make system even more complex. And also, for campaign scheduling, I am thinking of using weekdays with hours. For example, I will shows Monday to Sunday on UI, and user can select the from hours, to hours etc. Any better ideas or suggestion on how to design UI in very user friendly manner and what design should be followed on server side code (we write backend code on java/jpa/spring/quartz)? And I am looking for ideas or design patterns on how to build SQL queries (using JPA/Hinernate) programmatically on server side, based on varies conditions like based on country, state, town, village, and user subscriptions.

  • what software will rip a CD to flac files in one step?

    I'm using EAC to rip files to FLAC. Seems fine. But for a large amount of CDs (200 or so) the process is a little labor intensive. There's 4 or 5 clicks in there that seem extraneous -- EAC seems to want to rip the CD to a set of WAV files then (after all those files are ripped) I have to select "Process WAV files" (I'd get it exact, but EAC is occupied right now). I'd like to send all of it to FLAC files in just a few steps: get cddb info, select art, rip. Is there a way to do this with EAC that I'm missing? Haven't been able to find anything on the web that explains this. Is there a better program for this?

  • Is it wise to ask about design decisions made on a product during an interview?

    I've been thinking about interview questions lately and I've been reflecting on bad interview experiences I've had in the past. One of particular note is where I had asked the interviewer why the team chose to use Spring over EJB3 in their product. The interviewer pretty much tore my face off, yelling "Because Spring is not the be all and end all of Java software development, do you want this job or not?". In response to this, I told him that this probably wasn't the job for me and I walked out the interview. He told me at the start of the interview that they had high stuff turnover, the product had gone from Modula 3 to Perl to Java then after asking him a technical question, he went in flames. It seemed obvious to me that he was toxic to the company with that kind of attitude. Question: Is it a good idea to probe on architectural choices taken in an interview? If not, why? From my own point of view, an interview is a two-way process. If the interviewers are testing me on my technical skills, I've got every right to ask them the same questions to 1) Figure out what their mindset and attitudes towards developing software solutions are and 2) To figure out if there are in line with how I would approach problems of that kind. It's very possible that the interviewer who got angry was a bad interviewer and forgot that an interview is a two-way process. If I was asked this, I would have simply said something along the lines of wanting to leverage the container more, but I certainly wouldn't have tried to put him in a state of meek capitulation. The interviewer in question was the lead developer in the team.

  • CLR 4.0: Corrupted State Exceptions

    Corrupted state exceptions are designed to help you have fewer bugs in your code by making it harder to make common mistakes around exception handling. A very common pattern is code like this: public void FileSave(String name) { try { FileStream fs = new FileStream(name, FileMode.Create); } catch (Exception e) { MessageBox.Show("File Open Error"); throw new Exception(IOException); } The standard recommendation is not to catch System.Exception but rather catch the more specific exceptions (in this case, IOException). While this is a somewhat contrived example, what would happen if Exception were really an AccessViolationException or some other exception indicating that the process state has been corrupted? What you really want to do is get out fast before persistent data is corrupted or more work is lost. To help solve this problem and minimize the chance that you will catch exceptions like this, CLR 4.0 introduces Corrupted State Exceptions, which cannot be caught by normal catch statements. There are still places where you do want to catch these types of exceptions, particularly in your application’s “main” function or when you are loading add-ins.  There are also rare circumstances when you know code that throws an exception isn’t dangerous, such as when calling native code. In order to support these scenarios, a new HandleProcessCorruptedStateExceptions attribute has been added. This attribute is added to the function that catches these exceptions. There is also a process wide compatibility switch named legacyCorruptedStateExceptionsPolicy which when set to true will cause the code to operate under the older exception handling behavior.     I am running an Arch Linux (latest, up-to-date) box, and attempting to get MySQL to start at boot. With the systemd package installed I have systemctl available, and as such I can do things like this: systemctl start mysqld.service systemctl [stop|status|restart] mysqld.service That's all fine, and works great when I want to start/stop manually, however, when it comes to getting it to start at boot (by using 'enable' on systemctl, I get some nasty output): [root@rudivarch ~]# systemctl enable mysqld.service Failed to issue method call: No such file or directory Obviously, since the other commands work just fine, I'm seriously confused by this and have spent a good while trying to figure it out... systemctl status outputs this: [root@rudivarch ~]# systemctl status mysqld.service mysqld.service Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/mysqld) Active: inactive (dead) since Tue, 31 Jan 2012 15:32:28 +0000; 1min 25s ago Process: 589 ExecStop=/etc/rc.d/mysqld stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 257 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/mysqld start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/mysqld.service Anybody have any ideas as to why 'enable' doesn't work?

    We in no way work for Attunity but we were asked to test drive a beta version of their Oracle CDC solution for SSIS.  Everybody should know that moving more data than you need to takes too much time and uses resources that may better be employed doing something else.  Change data Capture is a technology that is designed to help you identify only the data that has had something done to it and you can therefore move only what is needed.  Microsoft have implemented this exact functionality into SQL server 2008 and I really like it there.  Attunity though are doing it on Oracle. DISCLAIMER: This is a BETA release and some of the parts are a bit ugly/difficult to work with.  The idea though is definitely right and the product once working does exactly what it says on the tin.  They have always been helpful to me when I have had a problem with the product and if that continues then beta testing pain should be eased somewhat. In due course I am going to be doing some videos around me using the product.  If you use Oracle and SSIS then give it a go.   • Copying files to Truecrypt file container hangs

    I have a dual boot installation with Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bits, NTFS file sytem) and Ubuntu 10.10 (32-bits, ext4 file system). I have installed the version 7.0a of Truecrypt in both Operating Systems. Located in the Windows 7 HDD I have a 150 GB encrypted file container. It is a standard and dynamic file container, which means it's not hidden and uses a sparse file. This file was created using the Windows version of the Truecrypt program. When I logon in Windows the container is mounted as the drive E: and everything works fine! In Ubuntu the Windows's NTFS file system is automaticaly mounted after I logon. I've configured that using the ntfs-config package. In my ~/.profile I have this line to mount the truecrypt's file container: truecrypt /media/7EDEBCFADEBCABB1/Users/Wagner/hd/hd.tc /media/truecrypt1 The file container is mounted after the logon without any problem. I can access it, copy files to/from it, etc. But when I try do copy relatively large amounts of data (~50 MB) to it via nautilus or cp -R, it starts the copy, copies some data until certain point and then it just hangs! The progress bar does not move anymore and nothing happens. There is no error, it just hangs and that's it. I have to kill the process myself. This problem does not happen in Windows: I can copy very large amounts of data to the container and it works great. But in Ubuntu the problem always happens! I mean, whenever I try to copy a bunch of files together the copy process hangs. Does anyone ever faced this problem? Can anyone help? Thanks!
