• Light-weight client/server DB?

  Hello, (This question falls between programming and finding a tool, so I guess I'll ask here in SO since it has more activity than SuperUser.) I like the simplicity of SQLite, but by design, it doesn't support concurrent access. The apps I write don't have heavy needs, so I'd like to avoid heavier solutions like MySQL that are more difficult to deploy (remote customers with usually no computer personnel). Does someone know of a good solution that would offer the following features? Client available for VB.Net applications The server itself doesn't have to be a .Net application. Actually, I'd rather a bare-metal server so that it can run even on embedded Linux hosts with less RAM/CPU than regular PC's Easy install: the client part should either be statically linked inside the client application or be available as a single DLL, and the server should just be a single EXE listening for queries, à la Fossil (http://www.fossil-scm.org) clients can locate the server on the LAN by broadcasting data picked up by the server, so users don't have to write down the IP address and paste it into each client open-source, or moderately priced closed-source Thank you.

• mysql select from a table depending on in which table the data is in

  I have 3 tables holding products for a restaurant. Products that reside in the bar, food and ingredients. I use php and mysql. I have another table that holds information about the orders that have been made so far. There are 2 fields, the most important ones, that hold information about the id of the product and the type (from the bar, from the kitchen or from the ingredients). I was thinking to write the sql query like below to use either the table for bar products, kitchen or ingredients but it doesn't work. Basically the second table on join must be either "bar", "produse" or "stoc". I know this may seem odd, but it allows me to cut down significantly on excess comments while still providing a clean description of my code and any interfaces therein. • Does anyone know of a good Commercial WPF Web Browser Control?

  I have an MDI WPF app that I need to add web content too. At first, great it looks like I have 2 options built into the framework the Frame control and the WebBrowser control. Given that this is an MDI app it doesn't take long to discover that neither of these will work. The WebBrowser control wraps up the IE WebBrowser ActiveX Control which uses the Win32 graphics pipeline. The "Airspace" issue pretty much sums this up as "Sorry, the layouts will not play nice together". Yes, I have thought about taking snapshots of the web content rendering these and mapping the mouse and keyboard events back to the browser control, but I can't afford the performance penalty and I really don't have time to write and thoroughly test it. I have looked for third party controls, but so far I have only found Chris Cavanagh's WPF Chromium Web Browser control. Which wraps up Awesomium 1.5. Together these are very cool, they play nice with the WPF layouts. But they do not meet my performance requirements. They are VERY HEAVY on memory consumption and not to friendly with CPU usage either. Not to mention still quite buggy. I'll elaborate if you are interested. So, do any of you know of a stable performant WPF web browser control? Thanks.

• Sharepoint BDC Error: The title property of entity tblStaff is set to an invalid value

  I am just starting to create our Business Data Catalog(s) for our practice management system and I am running into an issue w/ our staff table. Background: I am using Business Data Catalog Definition Editor to create my ADF. I am using the RevertToSelf Authentication Mode. I have tried a few other tables and they seem to work just fine thus far.. only issue is w/ the staff table. If I removed all the columns for the staff entity except the ID and a few columns for the name it actually works. So it has a problem w/ one of my columns in tblStaff. I receive this error even when I set up an ADF w/ just this one entity. So w/ no associations.. When attempting to view the record: http://servername/ssp/admin/Content/tblstaff.aspx?StaffID={0} w/ {0} replaced w/ an actual staff ID I get the following error: The title property of entity tblStaff is set to an invalid value. Things I have tried: I noticed that I do have a column in my staff table called "Title" and removed it from ADF w/ no luck... Same error.. I tried to use bdc meta man to create my ADF and I got the same error... Any ideas? Chris

• Autocomplete and IE7 - slowness, sluggishness as overall pagesize grows?

  Hi, I have the autocomplete plugin (http://bassistance.de/jquery-plugins/jquery-plugin-autocomplete/, version 1.1 and 1.0.2) on a project to add pieces of "equipment" to a "project". On a fresh project the plugin works great; the data returned from the database comes back FAST, you can scroll the list fast, and can select an item and move on to the next one. Once I have a project established with equipment on it, and I go to add equipment, the performance is pretty bad. It takes 4-5 seconds to get the list of data back from the server, scrolling the list is painful, and the cursor takes several seconds to settle on an item. Repainting the page after the list goes away is slow. This is occurring in IE7, latest version. FF3 and Chrome are fine, very snappy. The pagesize is about 40K overall. I'm thinking this is an issue with the IE7 Javascript engine, or an edge case with this plugin and IE7; it works quickly enough in FF3+. I would appreciate any ideas, solutions, known issues, or thoughts on how to more specifically pin this down. I'd love to post sample code, but this is a corporate app, and I'm not how useful it would be given that the server side piece cannot be shown; ie: you can't pull it down and test it like a self contained piece of code.. • WCF Service instead of ASMX Web Service?

  I'm writing a SOAP Server that will act as an endpoint for an external client. The external client expects SOAP 1.1. I'll be taking embedded business objects in the SOAP messages and passing them to an internal application, getting responses back and responding with SOAP messages to the eternal client. I did the traditional ASMX based web services several years ago. Now, I've been exploring WCF Services and wondering the best approach to take. 1) Should WCF be considered a superset of ASMX web services? 2) Is there any reason to still write new web services using ASMX instead of WCF? 3) Does WCF provide better facilities for working with SOAP messages, as opposed to SOAP Extensions? 4) Can I restrict communication to SOAP 1.1 using WCF, the way I can with a web.config change in ASMX? 5) Does WCF have an easy way to log or review the requests that hit the service without resorting to something like SOAP extensions? Sorry my questions are not very specific; still trying to get handle on what I need to know... Using VS2008, Windows Server 2008. Chris

• GNUStep make with a precompiled (and prefixed) .pch header from Xcode project?

  I'm trying to build an Xcode project with GNUStep-make. Right now the project is very small (3 classes) however it will grow to hundreds of classes over the coming weeks so I'm trying to get everything figured out and well-organised now. Xcode creates a ProjectName_Prefix.pch file which is a header that: a) get precompiled and b) is prefixed to every file in my project; at least if I understand correctly. Now, how do I tell GNUStep-make what to do with this file when it builds? I've added it to the XXX_PRECOMPILED_HEADERS variable. Cioccolata_OBJC_PRECOMPILED_HEADERS = Cioccolata_Prefix.pch With this in place the build fails with the error: Making all for framework Cioccolata... make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/Users/chris/Projects/Mac/Cioccolata/build/GNUStep/obj/PrecompiledHeaders/ObjC/Cioccolata_Prefix.pch', needed by `internal-precompile-headers'. Stop. make: *** [Cioccolata.all.framework.variables] Error 2 I've also got the following in my makefile: ADDITIONAL_OBJC_FLAGS += -include Cioccolata_Prefix.pch -Winvalid-pch I'm not sure what I've done wrong here. I basically have tried to follow the GNUStep documentation for precompiled headers. None of my project's source files expressly include the Foundation framework since this header does that.

• WCF: limit number of calls per hour - per user

  Hi guys, I've got a WCF service (basicHttpBinding, basic authentication, IIS 6.0) on which I want to restrict the number of calls per hour - on user basis. For example, max 1000 calls per user, per hour (a la Google Maps, etc). I also want to implement some sort of subscription mechanism, so that users can upgrade their call-limit across various 'price plans'. I know that I could achieve this with a custom Inspector, backed by a DB containing some sort of 'subscription' table and a counter, but I'd like to avoid reinventing the wheel. Does anyone have experience doing this? Are there 3rd party projects/libraries that support this out of the box? Thanks. Eric

• Monitor file selection in explorer (like clipboard monitoring) in C#

  Hi, I am trying to create a little helper application, one scenario is "file duplication finder". What I want to do is this: I start my C# .NET app, it gives me an empty list. Start the normal windows explorer, select a file in some folder The C# app tells me stuff about this file (e.g. duplicates) How can I monitor the currently selected file in the "normal" windows explorer instance. Do I have to start the instance using .NET to have a handle of the process. Do I need a handle, or is there some "global hook" I can monitor inside C#. Its a little bit like monitoring the clipboard, but not exactly the same...   We want to get a row from a table using Hibernate a la: select max(id) from mytable where date = <date> Then select * from mytable where id = <max_id> We are currently using Hibernate to map mytable to Java domain objects. I know how to load the domain object based on an id. So I could just do #1 using JDBC and then load the domain object using Hibernate the "normal" way. But.. is there a way to do this with one single Hibernate logical query?

  Hi, I need a POI database for a startup project I am working on - it will be a free basic version and a premium paid for version in the sense that user will pay a monthly subscription. I would like to use foursquare type checkin to places and plancast type functionality to search for places (one-line search). Ie I need to: - perform a search for POIs around a location - associate users to that POI, with a time stamp - allow users to add own POIs - provide free-text search for POIs (a la google one-line search) Google API allows great search, but I understand there are limits in number of requests that can be done? This would prevent scaling, and may result in application breaking when too many users. Also what does google T&C say about using this in a paid for service? Openstreetmap I understand does not have these contstraints, but do they also provide a good one-line search type API? Or how could I solve this? Many thanks for any advice, Ellie

  Hi All, I often find myself implementing a class maintaining some kind of own status property as an enum: I have a Status enum and ONE Status property of Status type. How should I solve this name conflict? public class Car { public enum Status { Off, Starting, Moving }; Status status = Status.Off; public Status Status // <===== Won't compile ===== { get { return status; } set { status = value; DoSomething(); } } } If the Status enum were common to different types, I'd put it outside the class and the problem would be solved. But Status applies to Car only hence it doesn't make sense to declare the enum outside the class. What naming convention do you use in this case? NB: This question was partially debated in comments of an answer of this question. Since it wasn't the main question, it didn't get much visibility. EDIT: Filip Ekberg suggests an IMO excellent workaround for the specific case of 'Status'. Yet I'd be interesting to read about solutions where the name of the enum/property is different, as in Michael Prewecki's answer. EDIT2 (May 2010): My favorite solution is to pluralize the enum type name, as suggested by Chris S. According to MS guidelines, this should be used for flag enums only. But I've come to like it more and more. I now use it for regular enums as well.

  Hi, I am implementing a full text search API for my rails apps, and so far have been having great success with Thinking Sphinx. I now want to implement a date range search, and keep getting the "bad value for range" error. Basically I am trying to have the API request pass in a "since" date to see all posts after a certain date. I am specifying that the date should be in the YYYY-MM-DD format. Thanks for your help.   Hi, I've written a dummy http server as an exercise in F#. I'm using Mono 2.4.4 on Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64, with MonoDevelop. The following code fails to compile with the error: Error FS0039: The field, constructor or member 'Spawn' is not defined (FS0039) Could someone try this in VisualStudio please, I don't know whether this is a Mono problem, or my problem.   I'm currently working with the versant object database (using jvi), and have a case where I need to query the database based on an object id. What I'm trying to achieve is something along the lines of Employee employee = new Employee("Mr. Pickles"); session.commit(); FundVQLQuery q = new FundVQLQuery(session, "select * from Employee employee where employee = $1"); q.bind(employee); q.execute(); However, I'm finding out the hard way (I get an EVJ_NOT_A_VALID_KEY_TYPE error thrown at me) that this is infact not the way to do it. Anyone got any experience in working with VQL? Your help is much apreciated! A small clarification: The problem is I'm running some performance tests on the database using the pole position framework, and one of the tests in that framework requires me to fetch an object from the database using either an object reference or a low level object id. Thus, I'm not allowed to reference specific fields in the employee object, but must perform the query on the object in its entirety. So, it's not allowed for me to go "select * from Employee e where e.id = 4", I need it to use the entire object. • How to calculate order (big O) for more complex algorithms (ie quicksort)

  I know there are quite a bunch of questions about big O notation, I have already checked Plain english explanation of Big O , Big O, how do you calculate/approximate it?, and Big O Notation Homework--Code Fragment Algorithm Analysis?, to name a few. I know by "intuition" how to calculate it for n, n^2, n! and so, however I am completely lost on how to calculate it for algorithms that are log n , n log n, n log log n and so. What I mean is, I know that Quick Sort is n log n (on average).. but, why? Same thing for merge/comb, etc. Could anybody explain me in a not to math-y way how do you calculate this? The main reason is that Im about to have a big interview and I'm pretty sure they'll ask for this kind of stuff. I have researched for a few days now, and everybody seem to have either an explanation of why bubble sort is n^2 or the (for me) unreadable explanation a la wikipedia Thanks!

  Hi, We're currently looking at an IT upgrade and I'm after recommendations for a tool which can do some or all of the following. SVN management (authz, web viewer, commit log, diff) Create template projects (1 click e.g. create me a microsite with this name in svn and give these people access) Reporting on code churn, time spent on tasks on a per project basis User story management Basically like Team Foundation Server but that integrates with SVN properly (reason for this - we have a wide range of skill sets and not everyone can use a TFS client). Is there a combination of Trac plugins + something that can create trac instances (a la Dreamhost's admin panel) that can acheive this. On a side note, does anyone have any experience of version controlling designery type files - e.g. PSDs, Illustrator files. Any advice at all appreciated. Cheers, Rob

• CMake & ExternalProject: Fails to find specific file

  Hi, we have some dependency libraries in our repository. The main part is build with cmake. Now the cmake-makefiles shall build the dependency libraries, which do not have a cmake build system. For one specific library there is a "Makefile.squirrel" which should be used. • Dynamic openrowset in T-Sql Function or viable alternative?

  I'm not quite sure how to phrase this. Here is the problem: I have 1-n items that I need to join to a different system (AS400) to get some data. The openrowset takes forever if I specify the where criteria outside of the openrowset, e.g.: select * from openrowset('my connection string', 'select code, myfield from myTable') where code = @code My idea was to create a function that takes in the item number and uses dynamic sql to inject it into the openrowset string, a la: declare @cmd varchar(1000) set @cmd = 'select * from openrowset('my connection string', ''select code, myfield from myTable where code = ' + @code + ''')' Apparently I can't use the insert.. exec.. strategy inside of a function. Is there any better way to achieve this? I was going to use this in joins where I needed the external data using cross apply. I'm not married to tvf and cross apply, but I do need a method of getting this data quickly. Thanks for any help.

• Debian packaging of a Python package.

  I need to write (or find) a script to create a Debian package (using python-support) from a Python package. The Python package will be pure Python (no C extensions). The Python package (for testing purposes) will just be a directory with an empty __init__.py file and a single Python module, package_test.py. The packaging script must use python-support to provide the correct bytecode for possible multiple installations of Python on a target platform. (i.e. v2.5 and v2.6 on Ubuntu Jaunty.) Most advice I find while googling are just examples nasty hacks that don't even use python-support or python-central. I have so far spent hours researching this, and the best I can come up with is to hack around the script from an existing open source project - but I don't know which bits are required for what I'm doing. Has anyone here made a Debian package out of a Python package in a reasonably non-hacky way? I'm starting to think that it will take me more than a week to go from no knowledge of Debian packaging and python-support to getting a working script. How long has it taken others? Any advice? Nel mostrare tale post vorrei che www.blabla.com diventasse un link cliccabile (come avviene in twitter). Ovviamente deve essere fatto un parsing della url, immagino usando le espressioni regolari. • Linked Measure Groups and Local Dimensions

  Mulling over something I've been reading up on. According to Chris Webb, A linked measure group can only be used with dimensions from the same database as the source measure group. So I took this to mean as long as two cubes share a database, a linked measure group can be used with a dimension. So I created a new cube and added a local measure group, a local dimension and a linked measure group. However, I can't create a relationship between the linked measure group and the local dimension even though they are within the same database. I get the message below: Regular relationships in the current database between non-linked (local) dimensions and linked measure groups cannot be edited. These relationship can only be created through the wizard. This dialog can be used to delete these relationships.
