• Version Control for developers new to source control

  I've been writing code for a few years now and our backup strategy has been to zip the entire code directory up every few days and put it somewhere else on your hard drive, or occasionally upload it to some online file hosting service. Unfortunately the file hosting service got canceled without telling me and we lost years of backups. It's come down to the point where I finally have to learn to use version control. The only problems are My boss really doesn't like SVN, he tried it and it had a high learning curve (at least his client). We need a reliable place to host it (we can pay a reasonable amount). Can someone suggest what may be the best version control system and client for a newbie which won't be too annoying. Second what is a good remote version control service?

• Is there a Maven plugin to generate AS3 classes from Java for BlazeDS ?

  Hi, I'm looking for a maven plugin that would generate ActionScript3 classes from Java classes in order to access them by object remoting. I've seen FlexMojo but it uses the GraniteDS generator wich create some problems when it comes to map Enum objects (wich can be fix through a workaround that is describe here : http://dev.c-ware.de/confluence/display/PUBLIC/Flexmojos+generated+AS3+model+with+Enum+support+using+BlazeDS?focusedCommentId=7634946&#comment-7634946 if you've googled your way here this might be useful) when working with BlazeDS. Everything that i found so far are people who explain how to generate VO classes on flex side using Flash Builder 4, but this solution can not be used in an industrial developpement environnement. • Oracle .NET Provider DLL hell

  I am currently developing on a Win7-32bits computer. Everything works fine. It's a ASP.NET application. I was able to use Microsoft's Oracle deprecated .NET provider to connect to Oracle (using 32 bit instant client) and also ODP.NET. No problems at all. Application runs fine. The problem comes when I deploy it to IIS7 on Windows 2008 Server 64bit computer. I can't get Microsoft's deprecated .NET provider or ODP.NET to work easily. Is there a straightforward way to use a 32bit based ODP.NET or Microsoft's Oracle deprecated .NET provider in Windows 2008 Server 64bits? DLL hell here! Thanks.

  Hi All, I want to write a named scoped to get a record from its id. Ex: I have a model called Event and its same as doing Event.find(id) (I dont want to use find inside my controller and I want my controller to use a named scoped (for future flexibility)) So I have written a named scoped named_scope :from_id, lambda { |id| {:conditions = ['id= ?', id] } } and I'm calling it from my controller like Event.from_id(id) But my problems is it returns Event object array not only one object Ex: if I want to get event name I have to write event = Event.from_id(id) event[0].name instead I want to write event = Event.from_id(id) event.name Am I doing something wrong here.. thanks in advance cheers sameera

• WIX: COM unregistration when removing one of two programs

  Hello, I am relatively new to WiX. It is a great tool, but I still need some time to learn it better. I have encountered a problem with registration and unregistration of a COM component. I have created installers for two applications, lets call them A and B. Both are using the same COM component. I have used the heat tool, as recommended. When installing A or B, the component is registered without any problems. But when I install A and B, then remove A (with Add/Remove programs) the COM class gets unregistered and B cannot use it anymore. Is there a clean solution to prevent this from happening? I would like to unregister the COM when BOTH A and B are uninstalled. Any help would be appreciated, Best regards, madbadger

  Hello, I thought that this was easier… I have a asp:hyperlink control, with target=”_blank”, pointing to the file I want the user to download. My plan is to track the number of times, the users click on this link. I thought in placing it in ajax update panel, to catch the postback and avoid full page refresh. However, hyperlink doesn’t have a onClick method. On the other hand I could use a linkbutton, which has a onClick built in. But It’s harder to make the file open in a new window… and I would also have to do something like: Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment; filename=myImage.jpg"); But I heard that the above approach has some problems with PPT, PPTX, PPS, PPSX… What is you'r opinion on this? How and why, would you do it?

• Serverside image processing

  I am designing a web application that does server side image processing in real time. Processing tasks include applying different effects like grayscale, blur, oil paint, pencil sketch etc on images in various formats. I want to build it using java/servlets which I am already familiar with. I found 3 options, 1) Use pure java imaging libraries like java.awt or http://www.jhlabs.com/ip/index.html 2) Use command line tools like Gimp/ImageMagick 3) Use c,c++ image libraries that have java bindings. I don't know which of the above options is good keeping the performance in mind. It looks like option 2) and 3) are good performance wise, but I want to be sure before I rule out 1). I have also heard gimp cannot be run using command line unless gtk or xwindows is already installed on the server. Will there be any such problems with 2) or 3) while running them server side? Also please suggest any good image processing libraries for this purpose.

• Libqxt under Qt Creator

  I want to create a tiny app which needs global shortcuts. So, I have downloaded the current version of libqxt (0.5.1) and opened as a project in Qt Creator. Libqxt compiles without problems in this way, so I thought that adding this in the tab Dependencies of my project it would get added automatically in the build, like Eclipse does with JAR libraries (I know that are different IDEs but it seems to be a common feature among them). What happens? Qt Creator compiles qxt before my project, when needed, but when I want to include its headers Qt Creator keeps warning me that it cannot find them. Probably I am missing the correct name of headers (I tried the headers showed in qxt documentation: http://doc.libqxt.org/0.5.0/classQxtGlobalShortcut.html) By the way, I looked the code for global shortcuts and I think I can rip it out and use it in my app as is and I am going to credit qxt team and open the code of my app.

  Hi. I had a pagination related question posted earlier. Here I went through the posted answers and suggested choices and I realized that to implement pagination in an application I could still write db level queries and ensure that I could implement pagination, even if in a crude form. However I have few follow up questions now: I am trying to show SMS from a content provider. Suppose I don't want to use content provider; can I access SMS table in database through my application. Aoes android's security framework allow that? How do people generally handle pagination problems in android, related to content that they are not storing but instead are fetching through content providers. (Android's own or custom) Isn't this a bigger problem. I am surprised to find so little text online about it.

I'm trying to make a simple filter search where-by you can choose from a series of 3 drop downs and then based upon this the results are then displayed, How would I go about adjusting the sql query for each and if you were to only choose to search from aone of the 3 rather than all 3 etc... example there could be the url with input such as: url.com?location=gb&color=3&hair=4 and still form the correct sql query for something like this: url.com?location=gb&hair=1 and not encounter problems with WHERE and AND etc etc and empty variables in the statement Would this not need to be a massive function to check using if to see how the data is set for all possibilities?   I'm trying to come up with a way to determine how "hot" certain threads are in a forum. What criteria would you use and why? How would these come together to give a hotness score? The criteria I'm thinking of include: how many replies how long since the last reply average time between replies The problems this algorithm must solve: A thread which has 500 replies is clearly hot, unless the last reply was over a year ago. A thread with 500 replies that was replied to a second ago is clearly hot, unless it's taken 4 years to reach 500 replies. A thread with 15 replies in the last 4 minutes is really hot! Any ideas, thoughts or complete solutions out there?

• 32-bit oracle 10g client to 64-bit oracle 10g server

  Due to a 3rd party application's requirement, I may be forced to use 32-bit client of Oracle 10gR2 on the application server to connect to a 64-bit DB server oracle 10gR2 (10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit;another box). The OS is SUSE Linux ver 10. Platform is x86. There are no problems connecting to 64-bit DB server via 32-bit client. I have tested this. Does this result in performance degradation? Does Oracle or anyone else has any recommendations about this kind of scenario? Searched the net without much gain. Please help. Thanks.

• Datacontracts property getter running twice

  I have a set of data contracts that act as wrappers to base classes that we wish to expose. A quick example is: [DataMember] public List<decimal> Points { get { return sourceObject.ListPoints(); } private set{} } We have some other properties that we have to massage the data first (we are converting object graphs and need to guard against circular references). The issue that we are seeing is that this getter will fire twice, once within the service operation, then again during serialization. This is causing two problems: We manually add to collections, since this is running twice the collections are filled with dupes. If an exception is thrown during the second run, it happens outside of the try/catch in the operation, and does not throw a fault. The service throws a cryptic timeout message, and the only way to see the error is via WCF trace logs.

  When i try to check leaks of my iPhone App using Instruments, everything is just fine. Same App on actual real device shows this leak for a few times during the app launch. It is pretty non-deterministic and it happens in system libraries. I tried to google down the solution without a luck. Anyone experiencing the same problems? Anyone knows the solution? I find interesting, that every of my leak in code will crash the app sooner or later. These GeneralBlock-3584 leaks keeps app perfectly stable. Might this be reason for AppStore rejection? Thanx for any answer regarding this undocumented problem (Apple is silent unfortunately).

I'm unsure of how best to design the 'schema' should I embed a user's subscriptions or have a separate 'subscriptions' collection and use db references? If I embed, I still have to perform a query to get all of a user's followers. e.g. Given the following user: { "username" : "alan", "photo": "123.jpg", "subscriptions" : [ {"username" : "john", "status" : "accepted"}, {"username" : "paul", "status" : "pending"} ] } to find all of alan's subscribers, I'd have to run something like this: db.users.find({'subscriptions.username' : 'alan'}); from a performance point of view, is that any worse or better than having a separate subscriptions collection? also, when displaying a list of subscriptions/subscribers, I am currently having problems with n+1 because the subscription document tells me the username of the target user but not other attributes I may need such as the profile photo. Are there any recommended practices for such situations? thanks Alan

The error source is XmlSerializer s = new XmlSerializer(typeof(BookStore)); When I tried to look for a solution on google, I found it that LinkedList has some problems with serialization. • Can't resolve "UnauthorizedAccessException" with MVC 2 application running under IIS7

  We use MVC controllers that access System.File.IO in our application and they work fine in localhost (IIS 6.0-based Cassini). Deploying to IIS7, we have problems getting the controllers to work because they throw UnauthorizedAccessExceptions. We have done the following to try to resolve the issue: - Set NETWORK SERVICE and IUSR accounts to have permission on the files and folders in question - Ensured the App Pool is running under NETWORK SERVICE and loading the user profile - Application is running under full trust - We tried adding impersonation to web.config and giving NETWORK SERVICE write permissions Now, we alternate between getting UnauthorizedAccessException and an IIS7 404 page that suggests the routes are being ignored completely (for example we serve "/favicon.ico" via a controller when the physical file actually lives at /content/images/favicon.ico). We used ProcessMonitor to try to track down the issue but weren't successful.

• Looking for a reporting tool that will allow vector graphics in output file (PDF)

  I have been tasked with evaluating our current system that we use for creating and outputing reports. Currently we are using Crystal Reports ver 8, (I know that this is and old version.), which has a custom commandline app that we wrote in C# to execute the report for a given parameter passed through the command line. We like Crystal becuase it's easy to setup and design the report. It's also easy to print and create a PDF file from crystal using our custom commandline program. One of the problems/complaints that we have is that Crystal does does not appear to have a method that will allow us to create a PDF file with a vector images, such as our company logo. Crystal Reports always converts an image into a bitmap. When the PDF is printed, the results are less than flattering, and the PDF file size is increased. Does anyone have any recomendadtions for a reporting product that we should consider?
