• 32 bit depth jpg images problem in IE when referenced locally

  We have an webbapplication that takes an image that will be uploaded and resized. The resize-library we used saved all pictures with 32-bit depth whatever the depth was before. We have an online client that can view the pictures via an html-file and all is fine there. All pictures are shown correctly. The problem: We also have an vb-winform application that download the pictures and show them in an html-file locally in an webbrowser control. But here all pictures are rejected (not rendered), just the red cross. If we create an static html-file with img-tags in them locally, its the same. All pictures that has 32-bits depth are shown as red crosses. If we resave the pictures with 24-bits depth it magically works again. So ofcourse that was our "workaround", let the resize-library save all pictures with 24-bits depth instead. Summary: 32-bits jpg files shows correct in IE when online but not when referenced locally in a local html-file. (This is true for IE8 on both winxp and windows7). The same local html-file opened in mozilla showed OK. Question: I have googled this a lot but has not found anything about this "problem". Is this a bug in IE8?

• NAnt not running NUnit tests

  I'm using NUnit 2.5 and NAnt 0.85 to compile a .NET 3.5 library. Because NAnt 0.85 doesn't support .NET 3.5 out of the box, I've added an entry for the 3.5 framework to NAnt.exe.config. 'MyLibrary' builds, but when I hit the "test" target to execute the NUnit tests, none of them seem to run. [nunit2] Tests run: 0, Failures: 0, Not run: 0, Time: 0.012 seconds Here are the entries in my NAnt.build file for the building and running the tests: <target name="build_tests" depends="build_core"> <mkdir dir="Target" /> <csc target="library" output="Target\Test.dll" debug="true"> <references> <include name="Target\MyLibrary.dll"/> <include name="Libraries\nunit.framework.dll"/> </references> <sources> <include name="Test\**\*.cs" /> </sources> </csc> </target> <target name="test" depends="build_tests"> <nunit2> <formatter type="Plain" /> <test assemblyname="Target\Test.dll" /> </nunit2> </target> Is there some versioning issue I need to be aware of? If you assembly is not build using NUnit 2.2.8.0... Could not load file or assembly 'Test' or one of its dependencies... I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction or describe a similary situation they have encountered. Edit I have since tried it with NAnt 0.86 beta 1, and the same problem occurs.

• Outlook 2010 corrupts all Office attachments on a Server 2008R2 Remote Desktop Server

  I have a rather annoying problem with a clients new Remote Desktop server. The problem is that any and all Office attachments (tested with Word and Excel documents) sent to the users via email cannot be opened due to the file seemingly being corrupted/damaged. I have determined that it is a local problem on the server, as the attachments work fine on my own pc. Also I believe the problem is isolated to Outlook, as the users can open already stored Office files without any issues. What are your thoughts on this? Extra information: The server is running Microsoft Server 2008 R2. The Office is a version 2010. It is handeling the roles of AD and RDS - The client only has one server, hence the breach of best practise. There is currently no AV software on the server. I have tried running a repair as well as a reinstalling of Office, with the error still there.

• Incremental backups in Quickbooks 2005

  My church uses Quickbooks 2005. They have a backup to a 512 MB thumbdrive. They have been backing up about every week for the past 18 months. The filesize of the backups have grown from 14 MB to about 23 MB. I was planning on giving them a 1 or 2 GB thumb drive and calling it a day, but when I dumped this info into Excel and projected out the growth rate, I found that we'll hit 1 GB in July, and 10 GB in about another 18 months, and then 100 GB about 18 months after that. It looks to me like Quickbooks saves all the transactions with every backup. Is there a way to force incremental backups? If this is the way it is, that's fine, but I'd rather not keep buying another order of magnitude of storage space every 18 months. Can I safely delete the previous backups, and just keep the recent 2 or 3 months worth? Thanks.

• From VB6 to .net via COM and Remoting...What a mess!

  I have some legacy vb6 applications that need to talk to my .Net engine application. The engine provides an interface that can be connected to via .net Remoting. Now I have a stub class library that wraps all of the types that the interface exposes. The purpose of this stub is to translate my .net types into COM-friendly types. When I run this class library as a console application, it is able to connect to the engine, call various methods, and successfully return the wrapped types. The next step in the chain is to allow my VB6 application to call this COM enabled stub. This works fine for my main engine-entry type (IModelFetcher which is wrapped as COM_ModelFetcher). However, when I try and get any of the model fetcher's model types (IClientModel, wrapped as COM_IClientModel, IUserModel, wrapped as COM_IUserModel, e.t.c.), I get the following exception: [Exception - type: System.InvalidCastException 'Return argument has an invalid type.'] in mscorlib at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.ValidateReturnArg(Object arg, Type paramType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.PropagateOutParameters(IMessage msg, Object[] outArgs, Object returnValue) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.HandleReturnMessage(IMessage reqMsg, IMessage retMsg) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.PrivateInvoke(MessageData& msgData, Int32 type) at AWT.Common.AWTEngineInterface.IModelFetcher.get_ClientModel() at AWT.Common.AWTEngineCOMInterface.COM_ModelFetcher.GetClientModel() The first thing I did when I saw this was to handle the 'AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AssemblyResolve' event, and this allowed me to load the required assemblies. • Append a dynamically changing watermark to a PDF in SharePoint

  This is primarily a question of possibilities more than instructions. I'm a programming consultant working on a WSS project site system for my client. We have a document library in which files are uploaded to go through a complex approval process. With multiple stages in this process, we have an extra field which dictates what the current status of the document is. Now, my client has become enamored with the idea of PDF watermarking. He wants the document (which is already a PDF) to be affixed with a watermark corresponding to the current status, such that with each stage of the approval process the watermark will change. One method, the traditional method for PDF watermarking, of accomplishing this is to have one "clean" copy of the document somewhere hidden on the site, and create a new PDF from it that has the watermark at each stage of the approval process. Since the filename will never change, this new PDF can be uploaded continually to a public library, always overwriting the old version and simulating a "dynamically changing watermark". However, in the various stages there will also be people uploading clean copies with corrections and suggestions, nevermind the complex nature of juggling around two libraries and the fact we double the number of files stored. My client and I agree that this is not a practical path to choose. What we would like to do is be able to "modify" the watermark in a PDF, so that we only have to keep one copy of the file. Unfortunately, from what I've seen, in most cases when you make something like a watermark, which in its nature is supposed to be "unmodifyable", you won't be able to edit it later. So, is it possible to have a part of a PDF which cannot be changed by anyone who downloads the file, but can be changed as part of a workflow or other object model process? Thanks in advance!

  I'm creating an online game where people log in and then have the list of current players displayed. When the user enters a "room" it dispatches an SFSEvent which includes a Room object with the list of users as User objects in that room. As that event's callback function, I get the list of current users which is an Array, switch the View Stack child index, and then I wrap the user list array in an ArrayList before I assign it to the MXML Spark List component's dataSource. • Add Zend_Navigation to the View with old legacy bootstrap

  Hi, I've been struggling with Zend_Navigation all weekend, and now I have another problem, which I believe has been the cause of a lot of my issues. I am trying to add Zend_Navigation to a legacy 1.7.6 Zend Framework application, i've updated the Zend Library to 1.9.0 and updated the bootstrap to allow this library update. The problem is that I don't know how, and the examples show the new bootstrap method of how to add the Navigation object to the view, I've tried this: //initialise the application layouts with the MVC helpers $layout = Zend_Layout::startMvc(array('layoutPath' => '../application/layouts')); $view = $layout->getView(); $configNav = new Zend_Config_Xml('../application/config/navigation.xml', 'navigation'); $navigation = new Zend_Navigation($configNav); $view->navigation($navigation); $viewRenderer = new Zend_Controller_Action_Helper_ViewRenderer(); $viewRenderer->setView($view); This seems to run through fine, but when I go to use the breadcrumb view helper in my layout, it errors with: Strict Standards: Creating default object from empty value in C:\www\moobia\development\website\application\modules\employers\controllers\IndexController.php on line 27 This is caused by the following code in the init() function of my controller. $uri = $this->_request->getPathInfo(); $activeNav = $this->view->navigation()->findByUri($uri); <- this is null when called $activeNav->active = true; I believe it's because the Zend_Navigation object is not in the view. • General N-Tier Architecture Question

  In an N-Tier app you're supposed to have a business logic layer and a data access layer. Is it bad to simply have two assemblies: BusinessLogicLayer.dll and DataAccessLayer.dll to handle all this logic? How do you actually represent these layers. It seems silly, the way I've seen it, to have a BusinessLogic class library containing classes like: CustomerBusinessLogic.cs, OrderBusinessLogic.cs, etc. each calling their appropriately named cousin in the DataAccessLayer class library, i.e. CustomerDataAccess.cs, OrderDataAccess.cs. I want to create a web app using MVP and it doesn't seem so cut and dry as this. There are lots of opinions about where the business logic is supposed to be put in MVP and I'm not sure I've found a really great answer yet. I want this project to be easily testable, and I am trying to adhere to TDD methodologies as best I can. I intend to use MSTest and Rhino Mocks for testing. I was thinking of something like the following for my architecture: I'd use LINQ-To-SQL to talk to the database. WCF services to define data contract interfaces for the business logic layer. Then use MVP with ASP.NET Forms for the UI/BLL. Now, this isn't the start of this project, most of the LINQ stuff is already done, so its stuck. The WCF service would replace the existing DataAccessLayer assembly and the UI/BLL would replace the BusinessLogicLayer assembly etc. This sort of makes sense in my head, but its getting really late. Anyone that's traveled down this path have any guidance? Good links? Warnings? Thanks!

• UnsatisfiedLinkError: The specified procedure could not be found

  I'm writing some JNI code in C++ to be called from an applet on Windows XP. I've been able to successfully run the applet and have the JNI library loaded and called, even going so far as having it call functions in other DLLs. I got this working by setting up the PATH system environment variable to include the directory all of my DLLs are in. So, the problem, is that I add another call that uses a new external DLL, and suddenly when loading the library, an UnsatisfiedLinkError is thrown. The message is: 'The specified procedure could not be found'. This doesn't seem to be a problem with a missing dependent DLL, because I can remove a dependent DLL and get a different message about dependent DLL missing. From what I've been able to find online, it appears that this message means that a native Java function implementation is missing from the DLL, but it's odd that it works fine without this extra bit of code. Does anyone know what might be causing this? What kinds of things can give a 'The specified procedure could not be found' messages for an UnsatisifedLinkError?

• MySQLdb within python2.5 virtualenv

  I have a Fedora 11 box with MySQL server. Fedora 11 uses python 2.6 internally and python 2.6 is automatically installed on the box. I have created a python virtual-env for version 2.5.5, so that I can run turbogears 1.x application. I have MySQLdb rpm installed on the box (and it works fine with python 2.6). When I import MySQLdb from within python version 2.6 it imports is successfully. When I import MySQLdb from within the python 2.5.5 virtual-env the import fails (because I have installed virtual-env with --no-site-packages). So, I have to install MySQLdb python as a local package (local to virtual-env). 'easy_install MySQL-python' within the virtual env fails. It downloads the MySQL-python-1.2.3.c1.tar.gz/download, but the 'python setup.py build' fails with error. The same problem occurs when building the MySQL outside of virtual-env. Is the 'python setup.py build' for MySQL-python trying to link to a library (and am I missing some library)? Or is the downloaded code missing some header files (unlikely)? Thanks.

Yes, that is all I have done to install Qt on MacOsX. Everything was going fine, until I run a sample application, of which compile output resulted in: No valid Qt version set. Set one in Preferences Error while building project qtilk When executing build step 'QMake' Canceled build. • Java: Handling cookies when logging in with POST

  I'm having quite some trouble logging in to any site in Java. I'm using the default URLconnection POST request, but I'm unsure how to handle the cookies properly. I tried this guide: http://www.hccp.org/java-net-cookie-how-to.html But couldn't get it working. I've been trying basically for days now, and I really need help if anyone wants to help me. I'll probably be told that it's messy and that I should use a custom library meant for this stuff. I tried downloading one, but wasn't sure how to get it set up and working. I've been trying various things for hours now, and it just won't work. I'd rather do this with a standard URLconnection, but if anyone can help me get another library working that's better for this, that would be great, too. I would really appreciate if someone could post a working source that I could study. What I need is: POST login data to site - Get and store the cookie from the site - use cookie with next URLconnection requests to get logged-in version of the site. Can anyone help me with this? • Keyboard Navigation of File Open Dialog in Windows 7

  In Windows XP standard File - Open dialog, the top has a "Look In" box. I can press Alt+I to drop down a tree of the disks folders and easily navigate to other folders or network shares. In Windows 7, I can't seem to navigate the File - Open dialog as easily. The best I've been able to muster is to tab 5 times (in Excel 2007, but I assume it's a windows standard), then use arrow keys or use Alt+arrow keys like a browser to get around. It's simply not as good because I can't see the whole tree at once. Is there a way to see the whole folder tree? If not, do you have any other tips for keyboard navigation of the file open dialog in Windows 7?

• Redirect C++ std::clog to syslog on Unix

  I work on Unix on a C++ program that send messages to syslog. The current code uses the syslog system call that works like printf. Now I would prefer to use a stream for that purpose instead, typically the built-in std::clog. But clog merely redirect output to stderr, not to syslog and that is useless for me as I also use stderr and stdout for other purposes. I've seen in another answer that it's quite easy to redirect it to a file using rdbuf() but I see no way to apply that method to call syslog as openlog does not return a file handler I could use to tie a stream on it. Is there another method to do that ? (looks pretty basic for unix programming) ? Edit: I'm looking for a solution that does not use external library. What @Chris is proposing could be a good start but is still a bit vague to become the accepted answer. Edit: using Boost.IOStreams is OK as my project already use Boost anyway. Linking with external library is possible but is also a concern as it's GPL code. Dependencies are also a burden as they may conflict with other components, not be available on my Linux distribution, introduce third-party bugs, etc. If this is the only solution I may consider completely avoiding streams... (a pity).

  Im familiar with asp.net web forms. I would now like to move on to writing web applications that use AJAX. I would like to get to the stage where I can create an app: that has "edit in place" (no page reload) where i can reorder images using drag and drop (also saves the order to DB) that has google like search suggestions while typing on the fly 1)So do I need to learn how to use AJAX.net and Jquery(my JS library of choice)? Can I make do using only AJAX.net or only Jquery? 2)As far a I know, Jquery will allow me to perform client side manipulations/actions and AJAX.net is the part that will allow me to connect some of my actions to the Server. EG. if I wanted to re-order elements using drag and drop, I would use Jquery, but in order to save the result of the re-order to the DB I would have to use AJAX.net correct? 2a)So In order to learn how to do the above Im thinking I should first learn Jquery so I know how to manipulate/ select elements, and then I can lean how to save these changes to the DB. 3)I searched the books titled "ASP.net AJAX in action" and ASP.net 3.5 AJAX, both of these books did not contain any references to "Jquery". Is this because they may be using a different JS library, or perhaps the book focuses on the AJAX user controls? I just found it confusing that 2 popular AJAX books dont make any reference to Jquery.   As a Java/Eclipse noob coming from a Visual Studio .NET background, I'm trying to understand how to set up my run/debug environment in the Eclipse IDE so I can start stepping through code. I have built my application with separate src and bin hierarchies for each library project, and each project has its own jar. For example, in a Windows environment, I have something like: c:\myapp\myapp_main\src\com\mycorp\myapp\main ...and a parallel "bin" tree like this: c:\myapp\myapp_main\bin\com\mycorp\myapp\main Other supporting projects are, similarly: **c:\myapp\myapp_util\src\com\mycorp\myapp\uti**l (and a parallel "bin" tree.) ... etc. So, I end up with, e.g., myapp_util.jar in the ...\myapp_util\bin... path and then add that as an external archive to my myapp_main project. I also use utilities like gluegen-rt.jar, which I add ad external dependencies to the projects requiring them. I have been able to run outside of the Eclipse environment, by copying all my project jars, gluegen-rt DLL, etc., into a "lib" subfolder of some directory and executing something like: java -Djava.library.path=lib -DfullScreen=false -cp lib/gluegen-rt.jar;lib/myapp_main.jar;lib/myapp_util.jar; com.mycorp.myapp.Main When I first pressed F11 to debug, however, I got a message about something like /com/sun/../glugen... not being found by the class loader. So, to debug, or even just run, in Ecplipse, I tried setting up my VM arguments in the Galileo Debug - (Run/Debug) Configurations to be the command line above, beginning at "-Djava.libary.path...". I've put a lib subdirectory - just like the above with all jars and the native gluegen DLL - in various places, such as beneath the folder that my main jar is built in and as a subfolder of my Ecplipse starting workspace folder, but now Eclipse can't find the main class: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.mycorp.myapp.Main Although the Classpath says that it is using the "default classpath", whatever that is. Bottom line, how do I assemble the constituent files of a multi-project application so that I can run or debug in Ecplipse?

  I have application based on 3.0 iPhone OS SDK One of tasks is playing video (I use MPMoviePlayerController for this task) Now I try to make universal app working on both 3.0 and 3.2 OS I did all steps described in apple documentation: Upgrade Current Target for iPad; make run-time checking for symbols using [[UIDevice currentDevice] respondsToSelector:@selector(userInterfaceIdiom)] function. • java serialization problems with different JVMs

  I am having trouble using serialization in Java. I've searched the web for a solution but haven't found an answer yet. The problem is this - I have a Java library (I have the code and I export it to an archive prior to executing the code) which I need to use with two differents JVMs. One JVM is on the server (Ubuntu, running Java(TM) JRE SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_09-b05)) and the other on Android 2.3.3. I compiled the library in Java 1.6. Now, I am trying to import to the client, an object exported from the server, but I receive this error: java.io.InvalidClassException: [Lweka.classifiers.functions.MultilayerPerceptron$NeuralEnd;; Incompatible class (SUID): [Lweka.classifiers.functions.MultilayerPerceptron$NeuralEnd;: static final long serialVersionUID =-359311387972759020L; but expected [Lweka.classifiers.functions.MultilayerPerceptron$NeuralEnd;: static final long serialVersionUID =1920571045915494592L; I do have an explicit serial version UID declared on the class MultilayerPerceptron$NeuralEnd, like this: protected class NeuralEnd extends NeuralConnection { private static final long serialVersionUID = 7305185603191183338L; } Where NeuralConnection implements the java.io.Serializable interface. If I do a serialver on MultilayerPerceptron$NeuralEnd I receive the serialVersionUID which I declared. So, why have both JVMs changed this value? Can you help me? Thanks, Alberto

  Installing Mercurial on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard I installed Mercurial 1.3.1 on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard from source using the following: cd ~/src curl -O http://mercurial.selenic.com/release/mercurial-1.3.1.tar.gz tar xzvf mercurial-1.3.1.tar.gz cd mercurial-1.3.1 make ALL sudo make install This installs the site-packages files for Mercurial in /usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages/. I know that installing Mercurial from the Mac Disk Image will install the files into /Library/Python/2.6/site-packages/, which is the site-packages directory for the Mac OS X default Python install. I have Python 2.6.2+ installed as a Framework with its site-packages directory in: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages With Mercurial installed this way, I have to issue: PYTHONPATH=/usr/local/lib/python2.6/site-packages:"${PYTHONPATH}" in order to get Mercurial to work. Questions How can I install Mercurial from source with the site-packages in a different directory? Is there an advantage or disadvantage to having the site-packages in the current location? Would it be better in one of the Python site-package directories that already exist? Do I need to be concerned about virtualenv working correctly since I have modified PYTHONPATH (or any other conflicts for that matter)?
