  • DNS problems on CentOS fresh install

    I'm having some DNS issues on a new box I'm installing with CentOS 6.2. I am able to look up names using nslookup, dig, or host. I am able to ping machines by name or by IP address. However, when I try other tools, such as ssh, wget, or yum, they are unable to resolve names. Per NcA's suggestion, I tried changing /etc/resolv.conf to point to 8.8.8.8. Oddly enough, this does make it work. Obviously, my DSL modem is responding to DNS requests in some way that some parts of Linux's resolution system don't like. Looking at the tcpdump, I am unable to see what the difference is. Certainly, both servers are sending the same addresses. Here's the output from tcpdump -nn -X with the server set to the DNS server on the DSL modem. If anyone has ideas, I'd be happy to hear them. For now, though, I can either refer to an outside DNS server or set up my own server on the new box. It's a workaround that seems like it should be unnecessary, but will allow me to proceed.

    Is there a way, apart from using HTML and JavaScript on a web control, to have an (almost) single codebase for an application that should run on iOS and Android? The big issue is of course that they use a different language (Java for Android, Objective-C for iOS) for application development. It would be nice to have some sort of meta-language that will be translated in Java and in Objective-C. What about Flash? Adobe wasn't supposed to release a tool to create flash-based apps in iOS?

    I have a Python script which needs to calculate the exact size of arbitrary strings displayed in arbitrary fonts in order to generate simple diagrams. I can easily do it with Tkinter.     In this example, the Google App Engine documentation makes the Customer the entity group parent of the AccountInfo entity. Wouldn't AccountInfo encapsulate Customer rather than the other way around?   • GSM Cell Towers Location & Triangulation Algorithm (Similar to OpenCellID / Skyhook / Google's MyLocation)

    Hi all, assuming I have a Fingerprint DB of Cell towers. The data (including Long. & Lat. CellID, signal strength, etc) is achieved by 'wardriving', similar to OpenCellID.org. I would like to be able to get the location of the client mobile phone without GPS (similar to OpenCellID / Skyhook Wireless/ Google's 'MyLocation'), which sends me info on the Cell towers it "sees" at the moment: the Cell tower connected to, and another 6 neighboring cell towers (assuming GSM). I have read and Googled it for a long time and came across several effective theories, such as using SQL 2008 Spatial capabilities, or using an euclidean algorithm, or Markov Model. However, I am lacking a practical solution, preferably in C# or using SQL 2008 :) The location calculation will be done on the server and not on the client mobile phone. the phone's single job is to send via HTTP/GPRS, the tower it's connected to and other neighboring cell towers. Any input is appreciated, I have read so much and so far haven't really advanced much. Thanx

    I'm trying to use Android Maps, following the instructions in Hello MapView. I've added <uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps" /> in the Manifest, and I'm building against the 'Google APIs' target, which claims to be API version 7.   • Setting the default stack size on Linux globally for the program

    So I've noticed that the default stack size for threads on linux is 8MB (if I'm wrong, PLEASE correct me), and, incidentally, 1MB on Windows. This is quite bad for my application, as on a 4-core processor that means 64 MB is space is used JUST for threads! The worst part is, I'm never using more than 100kb of stack per thread (I abuse the heap a LOT ;)). My solution right now is to limit the stack size of threads. However, I have no idea how to do this portably. Just for context, I'm using Boost.Thread for my threading needs. I'm okay with a little bit of #ifdef hell, but I'd like to know how to do it easily first. Basically, I want something like this (where windows_* is linked on windows builds, and posix_* is linked under linux builds) // windows_stack_limiter.c int limit_stack_size() { // Windows impl. return 0; } // posix_stack_limiter.c int limit_stack_size() { // Linux impl. return 0; } // stack_limiter.cpp int limit_stack_size(); static volatile int placeholder = limit_stack_size(); How do I flesh out those functions? For general formatted debug output, though, I want to use ::NKDbgPrintfW directly and wonder if someone knows if it compiles to a nop in optimised release builds or if my own macro wrapper around it with #ifdef DEBUG is still needed?

    Hi guys, I want to check our google postions for several keywords every day and make a note in a spreadseet. At the moment, we have a student doing it but it's a rubbish job and it doesn't seem fair on them! Are there any tools available to automate this process? I have tried rankchecker by seobook.com, but although that should be exactly what im looking for when i set scheduled tasks in that, it doesnt work. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks! peter EDIT: Liam has suggested a Python script to do this, which unfortunately isnt something I'm very familiar with! If anyone knows of a good tutorial or something to help us with this, that would be brilliant. Update: Found a php script at seoscript.net which looks like a step in the right direction. The results then matched the other users. My main machine is a mac. So, my questions are: Why do we get these two different results? Could this apply to other functions?

  • Reverse geocode street name and city as text

    Hello, I have been having some trouble finding a good way to output just the street name and city as text (Infinite Loop, Cupertino shown here) that can be displayed in my iPhone app. This needs to be able to dynamically change as you change streets and city. I don't have the slightest idea of how to do this, I hope someone can help. I have attached a very rough image of what I am trying to acheave. I have found this (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/services.html#Geocoding) for google maps about how to reverse geocode using javascript, but what I do not understand is how this would be done in a iPhone development setting. I work in web design and I see how it would be done in HTML but I am very new to iPhone development and don't have the slightest clue of how it would be done here. If someone could spell out how to do this I would be extremely grateful. I cannot seem to find what I am looking for by searching Google. According to amazon: Amazon.com's Statistically Improbable Phrases, or "SIPs", are the most distinctive phrases in the text of books in the Search Inside!™ program.     I'm running Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2008 Pro and trying to get my application to work on Windows XP SP3. I've tried the added the following to my /D compiler options: ;WINVER=0x0501;_WIN32_WINNT 0x0501;NTDDI_VERSION=NTDDI_WINXP But that made no difference. When I run it on my Windows XP machine (actually running in a virtualbox) I get the following error: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. So what have I missed? Is there something else required to run MSVC compiled programs or a different compiler option or something else?

Essentially, there is a global header, and a global footer, and in between is a white expandable div. We'd like our store to fit between the header and footer (and preferably be 960px wide). Do you know of any store platform built to live between the header/footer for situations like this? We really want a full store, not just paypal buy buttons. We'd like it to have a shop backend (CMS-like) with full tracking, etc. Can be paid or unpaid, and preferably hosted by us, but either might be applicable (if iframe or alternative works securely?).   • Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

    Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through. Can this be achieved on Windows? By that mean - without having to install external tools (like cygwin make); perhaps make.cmd? Typing "make installdeps" for instance, should work both on Unix and Windows.

  • google maps call within a For Loop not returning distance

    Hi, I am calling google maps within a for loop in my javascript as I have mulitple routes that need to be costed separately based on distances. Everything works great except that the distance is only returned for one of the routes. I have a feeling that it is something to do with the way I have the items declared within the ajax call for the maps.
