• Visual Studio 2010 / ASP.NET MVC 2 / Publish

  I just did a clean install on Windows 7 x64 Professional with the final release of Visual Studio 2010 Premium. In order to duplicate what I'm experiencing do the following in: Create a new ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application Right click the project and select Properties On the Web tab, select "Use Local IIS Web Server" Click on Create Virtual Directory Save all Unload the project Edit the project file Change MvcBuildViews to true Save all Reload project Right click the project and select Publish Choose the file system publish method Enter a target location Choose Delete all existing files Select Publish Right click the project Select Publish Each time I do the above I get the following errror: "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level..." The error originates from obj\debug\package\packagetmp\web.config, relative to the project directory. I can repeat this all day long with any MVC 2 project I've built. In order to fix this problem, I need to set MvcBuildViews to false in the project file. That's not really an option. This wasn't a problem in Visual Studio 2008 and it seems to be an issue with the way the Publish command stages files beneath the project directory. Can anyone else duplicate this error? Is this a bug or by design? Is there a fix, workaround, etc...? Thanks.

• Android How to get position of selected item from gridview without using onclicklistner, using ontouchlistner instead

  I have a gridview, I need to do stuff on motioneven.action_down and do something for motioneven.action_up ... using onclicklistener is great but does not give me this needed functionality. Is there anyway to easily call the gridview and get its selected item in a ontouchlistener ? I've been having limited success with making my own implementation. Its hard to get the right x,y because if i call the child it gives me the x and y relative to the child so a button would be 0,0 to 48,48 but it does not tell you the actual location on the screen relative to the gridview or the screen itself. this is what i've been doing, its partially working so far.   I am attempting to preload images using JavaScript. This happens because the last link http://www.iill.net/wp-content/uploads/images/hot-chick.jpg is not a direct link to the image. If you go to that link, your browser will redirect you to the ACTUAL location. Now, my image preloading code in Chrome works perfectly well, and the effects look great. Because it seems that Chrome preloads the actual data - the EVENTUAL image that is to be shown. This means that in Chrome if I preloaded an image that will redirect to 'stop stealing my bandwidth', then the image that gets preloaded is 'stop stealing my bandwidth'. How can I modify my code to get Firefox to behave the same way?

  Based off the one of the demos I have the following code. Currently what displays in the simulator is just hte contents of the paint function, however the ObjectChoiceField is still selectable if one happens to click in the right location. I would like both the text contents and the paint function contents to appear.   I'm creating a small vb.net application, and I'm trying trying to write a list of results from a listview to a text file. I've looked online and found the code to open the save file dialog and write the text file. When I click save on the save file dialog, I receive an IOException with the message "The process cannot access the file 'C:\thethe.txt' because it is being used by another process." The text file is created in the correct location, but is empty. • Forcing user to new page in php. (PHP newbie)

  Hello I'm a newbie web programmer. My background is writing Windows applications with sql. I'm putting together my 1st data entry screens in Php. I have a search form that links to a form that displays records in a grid. On each row of the grid I have a delete url to allow the user to remove a record. This links to a form delete.php (which calls the sql to remove the record). Ideally I would like to automatically take the user back to the search form rather than forcing the user to click on a link to do so. I have used ob_start with the header to do this elsewhere but cannot get it to work on this page. Is there another way to do it?   Hello, I have about 200 categories that are nested. I am currently reading the documention on the C5 generics library. I am not sure if the C5 library is overkill or not. I am looking at converting all my custom algorithms to the C5 implemention. This is what I need. If a certain category is chosen i need to find its parents, siblings, direct children, and all children. This is the way I have it set up. To find the: Parents: I start from the current location then loop through the list and find the current parent. When I find the parent I loop through the whole list again to find the next parent and so on. Siblings: I loop through the whole list and find all the nodes that have the same parent as the choosen node. direct children: I loop through the whole list and find all nodes that is a parent of the choosen node. All Children: This one took me a while to figure out. But I used recursion to find all children of the choosen node. Is there a better way to implement something like this?

  My PHP experience is rather limited. I've just inherited some stuff that looks odd to me, and I'd like to know if this is a standard way to do things. The page which shows up in the browser location (e.g. www.example.com/example_page) has something like: <? $title = "Page Title"; $meta = "Some metadata"; require("pageheader.inc"); ?> <!-- Content --> Then pageheader.inc has stuff like: <? @$title = ($title) ? $title : ""; @$meta = ($meta) ? $meta : ""; ?> <html> <head> <title><?=$title?></title </head> <!-- and so forth --> Maybe others find this style useful, but it confuses me. I suppose this could be a step toward a rudimentary content management system, but the way it works here I'd think it adds to the processing the server has to do without reducing the load on the web developer enough to make it worth the effort. So, is this a normal way to create pages with PHP? Or should I pull all this in favor of a better approach? Also, I know that "<?" (vs. "<?php" ) is undesirable; I'm just reproducing what is in the code.

  Take a simple XML file formatted like this: <Lists> <List> <Note/> ... <Note/> </List> <List> <Note/> ... <Note/> </List> </Lists> Each node has some attributes that actually hold the data of the file. I need a very quick way to count the number of each type of element, (List and Note). Lists is simply the root and doesn't matter. I can do this with a simple string search or something similar, but I need to make this as fast as possible. Design Parameters: Must be in java (Android application). Must AVOID allocating memory as much as possible. Must return the total number of Note elements and the number of List elements in the file, regardless of location in file. Number of Lists will typically be small (1-4), and number of notes can potentially be very large (upwards of 1000, typically 100) per file. I look forward to your suggestions.

Some files are inside the document root and some are outside using the <Directory> and Alias features in httpd.conf Assuming I have 3 files: webroot.php (Inside the document root) alias_directory.php (Inside a folder outside the doc root) alias_directory2.php (Inside a **different** folder outside the doc root) If alias_directory2.php needs both webroot.php and alias_directory.php, This does not work. (Remember alias_directory.php and alias_directory2.php are not in the same locations) require_once $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/webroot.php'; //(ok) require_once $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/alias_directory.php'; //(not ok) This does not work because alias_directory.php is not in the doc root. Similarly require_once $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/webroot.php'; //(ok) require_once dirname(__FILE__).'/alias_directory.php'; //(not ok) The problem here is that dirname(__FILE__) will return the path for alias_directory2.php not alias_directory.php. • Facebook Connect Login redirecting in Chrome and Safari

  I am having a problem with Facebook Connect that I can't seem to get my head around. A user clicks on the fb-login button, the pop up appears and they authenticate, the pop up closes and the on-login function is called. This happens in IE and Firefox as is expected. However in Chrome and Safari, the pop up redirects to the canvas url and doesn't close. Also the on-login function isn't called. I have googled and it seems to be something to do with the xd-receiver.htm file, however it seems weird that it is working in IE and Firefox but not Chrome or Safari. Any ideas? EDIT: After a bit more playing around it turned out that I didn't have my base domain set in Facebook settings. Why it works in some browsers and not others beats me, however it works now.   hello all i'm having a bear of a time getting visual studio 2010 (ultimate i think) to properly attach to my database. it was moved from original spot to #MYAPP#/#MYAPP#.Web/App_Data/#MDF_FILE#.mdf. I have three instances of sql server running on this machine. i have tried to replace the old mdf file with my new one and cannot get the connectionstring right for it. what i'm really wanting to do is to just open some DB instance, run a DB create script. Then I can have a DB that was generated via my edmx (generate database from model) in silverlight business application (c#) right now, when i go to server explorer in VS, choose add new connection, choose MS SQL Server Database FIle (SqlClient), choose my file location (app_data directory), use windows authentication, and hit the Test Connection button I get the following error: Unable to open the physical file "". Operating system error 5: "5(Access Denied.)". An attempt to attach to an auto-named database for file"" failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. The mdf file was created on the same machine by connecting to (local) on the sql server management studio, getting a new query, pasting in the SQL from the generated ddl file, adding a CREATE DATABASE [NcrCarDatabase]; GO before the pasted SQL, and executing the query. I then disconnected from the DB in management studio, closed management studio, navigated to the DATA directory for that instance, and copying the mdf and ldf files to my application's app_data folder. I am then trying to connect to the same file inside visual studio. I hope that gives more clarity to my problems :).   Javascript and jQuery (Fancybox) question I'm using the Javascript function below for Twitter sharing (as well as other services; the function code is simplified to just Twitter for this question) that grabs the to-be-shared page URL and title and it is invoked in the link with onclick. That results in the Twitter share page loading in a pop up browser window, i.e.<img src="/images/twitter_16.png" onclick="share.tw()" /> In order to be consistent with other design aspects of the site, what I'd like to be able to do is have the Twitter share page open not in a standard browser window but in a Fancybox (jQuery) window. Fancybox can load an external page in an iFrame when the img or href link contains a class (in this case class="iframe" ) in the link and in the document ready function in the header. Right now, of course, when I give the iframe class to the link that also has the onclick share.tw(), I get two popups: one browser window popup with the correct Twitter share page loaded, and a Fancybox jQuery popup that shows a site 404. How can I change the function to use Fancybox to present the Twitter share page? Is that a correct way to approach it? Or is there a better way, such as implementing the share function in jQuery, too? Thanks... • Yii Framework Tutorial - file not found

  I am in the process of learning the Yii Framework. I have been following this Tutorial. I have followed all the steps and have by index page loading. In my index.php page I point to two other pages located in protected/views/message The following is the code in my index.php located in the message folder mentioned above. <html> <body> <h1>Welcome</h1> <p> To view our message go to... <?php echo CHtml::link('Here', '/message/show')?> </p> <p> To edit our message go to... <?php echo CHtml::link('Here', '/message/edit')?> </p> </body> </html> "message" is the ID I gave when generating the model and controller through the yii shell application. The problem is, after the above page loads, and I click on any one of the above URLs, it points to "localhost:8080/message/show" and "localhost:8080/message/edit" , whereas the real location of these files is "localhost:8080/test/protected/views/message/..." What could I be doing wrong ?

• C# to unmanaged dll data structures interop

  I have a unmanaged DLL that exposes a function that takes a pointer to a data structure. I have C# code that creates the data structure and calls the dll function without any problem. At the point of the function call to the dll the pointer is correct. My problem is that the DLL keeps the pointer to the structure and uses the data structure pointer at a later point in time. When the DLL comes to use the pointer it has become invalid (I assume the .net runtime has moved the memory somewhere else). What are the possible solutions to this problem? The possible solutions I can think of are: Fix the memory location of the data structure somehow? I don't know how you would do this in C# or even if you can. Allocate memory manually so that I have control over it e.g. using Marshal.AllocHGlobal Change the DLL function contract to copy the structure data (this is what I'm currently doing as a short term change, but I don't want to change the dll at all if I can help it as it's not my code to begin with). Are there any other better solutions?

• Queries within queries: Is there a better way?

  As I build bigger, more advanced web applications, I'm finding myself writing extremely long and complex queries. I tend to write queries within queries a lot because I feel making one call to the database from PHP is better than making several and correlating the data. However, anyone who knows anything about SQL knows about JOINs. Personally, I've used a JOIN or two before, but quickly stopped when I discovered using subqueries because it felt easier and quicker for me to write and maintain. Commonly, I'll do subqueries that may contain one or more subqueries from relative tables. Consider this example: SELECT (SELECT username FROM users WHERE records.user_id = user_id) AS username, (SELECT last_name||', '||first_name FROM users WHERE records.user_id = user_id) AS name, in_timestamp, out_timestamp FROM records ORDER BY in_timestamp Rarely, I'll do subqueries after the WHERE clause. Consider this example: SELECT user_id, (SELECT name FROM organizations WHERE (SELECT organization FROM locations WHERE records.location = location_id) = organization_id) AS organization_name FROM records ORDER BY in_timestamp In these two cases, would I see any sort of improvement if I decided to rewrite the queries using a JOIN? As more of a blanket question, what are the advantages/disadvantages of using subqueries or a JOIN? Is one way more correct or accepted than the other?

• WP7 - correctly timeing out an observable?

  WP7 APP Using an observable from event, I download the lateset weather from a web service. I tested this out on the phone and emulator at home and it works fine. I brought the project with me to work and ran it using the emulator there. Now i'm not sure it its a firewall or what but it doesn't seem to get the weather, it just sits there for ever trying. So it got me thinking that if there was ever to happen on a phone then I need some kind of timeout in that if it can't get the weather in say 10 - 15 seconds then just give up. Here is the example code so far IObservable<IEvent<MyWeather.GetWeatherCompletedEventArgs>> observable = Observable.FromEvent<MyWeather.GetWeatherCompletedEventArgs>(Global.WeatherService, "MyWeather.GetWeatherCompleted").Take(1); observable.Subscribe(w => { if (w.EventArgs.Error == null) { // Do something with the weather } }); Global.WeatherService.GetWeatherAsync(location); How can I get this to time out safely after a given time if nothing is happening?

  In my Ant build.xml file, I am trying to compile JSPs using ojspc. The files are being compiled, however, the build process is still running to completion when the JSP compilation has errors. How can I get the build to fail on an error? At the Ant Java page, I am confused by: By default the return code of a is ignored. Alternatively, you can set resultproperty to the name of a property and have it assigned to the result code (barring immutability, of course). When you set failonerror="true", the only possible value for resultproperty is 0. Any non-zero response is treated as an error and would mean the build exits.
