• Nexenta/OpenSolaris filer kernel panic/crash

  I've an x4540 Sun storage server running NexentaStor Enterprise. It's serving NFS over 10GbE CX4 for several VMWare vSphere hosts. There are 30 virtual machines running. For the past few weeks, I've had random crashes spaced 10-14 days apart. This system used to open OpenSolaris and was stable in that arrangement. The crashes trigger the automated system recovery feature on the hardware, forcing a hard system reset. • Why did my Cisco router hang?

  We have a Cisco 1841 in our storage IDF that was originally running a 12.4(1) IP-BASE image; I wanted to upgrade to an advancedservicesk9-mz image, but the flash did not have enough space, so I deleted the running image. Later I tried inserting a larger CF from a Catalyst4500, which crashed the 1841 router (now without a bootable image). Using another 1800 series router, I loaded the 12.4(25g) advancedservicesk9 image and verified the image checksums. I set the confreg to 0x2102 from rommon and booted the new image; however the 1841 now hangs indefinitely after printing the IOS export control banner. I have tried four other images, all with the same results. What is wrong with this router? UPDATE 1: I tried loading images from a FAT16-formatted USB, but this didn't work either. I also tried tftpdnld from rommon, but got a get_mac_address(): Search T_IDPROM_MACADDR (0xc3) failed Illegal MAC address. error and the file would not load.

• ASP.NET Security Exception when Switch IIS7 to Use UNC Path for Content

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box running IIS7.5 with Medium Trust configured for ASP.NET. When I have the website running from local content (e.g.: c:\inetpub\wwwroot) everything works fine. When I change IIS to use a UNC path for the content (e.g.: \\computer\wwwroot) I get the following error: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I'm trying to figure out why ASP.NET/IIS would allow for the SQL call when using local content but not when using a UNC path. Any ideas what I need to do to use a UNC path from IIS7 properly?

• Why would the 'show processlist' command speed up normally slow requests to my remote DB? (connected via VPN)

  I am running a local Django development server that connects to a remote MySQL server via a VPN (IPSec). Request times are awfully slow and I consistently see timeouts. Attempting to diagnose the problem, I logged in to the remote database and ran: show full processlist Immediately, the local server went from idle to working. The page had not yet completely loaded, but progress had been made (debug logs confirm this). When I ran 'show full processlist' several times more in succession, the request completed quickly. I can currently reproduce this - unless I run 'show full processlist' over and over on the remote server, my local request usually times out. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? I'm running Django 1.3 and OS X 10.7. Note: I realize this may be entirely not be a question with a clear-cut answer and is probably my fault, but it is odd and reproducable, so I hope someone can at least point me the right direction.   My linux (fedora red hat 7) virtual dedicated server has been experiencing OOM multiple times a day for the past several days. I thought the issue was with spamd/spamassassin but after disabling this the errors remains. • Problems with login scripts on Terminal Server 2008

  We are having issues with login scripts not running on Windows 2008 Terminal Server. This is a brand new implementation and they have never worked. The test user in question doesn't have any problems running login scripts on their workstation. I have tried logging into the server directly with their account, but still no scripts run. I have setup a test account with Domain Admins rights in the same OU as theirs and the scripts don't run. I can manually run the scripts from the SYSVOL\somedomain.com\Policies folder and they run fine. The Terminal 2008 Server is in a mixed 2003/2008 domain. The user can run the gpupdate on the server without error. I have also run the Group Policy Results for this user and the terminal server and everything looks good, no errors. Any suggestions?

  Hi, We are running RedHat 3.4.6(x32) on VMWareEsx3.5(x64) with 6GB RAM. A few java processes(including jboss) are running in the background. The problem is that the java processes consume lots of memory, and sometimes they are killed by the OOM-killer. When OOM-killer is about to act, the free physical memory is very low 100MB-200MB, but the swap is not used (99% free). Sometimes this causes a kernel panic too. So why isn't the swap used? How to investigate this kernel panic? Is using 6GB memory on 32bit Redhat wise? Thanks

  I am running debian Squeeze in console mode on a plug computer. I control it opening an SSH session from a Windows machine, on the same local network. I started downloading a large file using wget. What I get is a console progress bar showing the percentage of data downloaded, file size, and download rate. When I close the session, debian is still running and downloading. Fine. But When I close and reopen a session, how can see which amount of data was downloaded, using a linux command ? thanks.

  I'm running the following setup: Xbox 360 is hooked up to my (PC) screen via HDMI/DVI converter. Because the Xbox has no dedicated sound output, except for optical S/PIDF, I'm also using the AV/RCA output, namely just the audio, which is connected to an old stereo, which is then connected to my PCs line-in. I'm now experiencing a some of noise. I'm using one of the standard "Realtek High Definition Audio" cards, which doesn't seem to offer this kind of functionality. Is there a software that will playback audio right off a device while running filters on it? It doesn't have to create a device on its own, I just want to listen to it. • Windows DVD Maker on Windows 8?

  Something I really miss in Windows 8 is the Windows DVD Maker. I tried to get it running on Windows 8 by copying the DVD Maker directory from Windows 7 over to Windows 8. When I run it, I get the following error: I had hoped that this could be resolved by installing the Media Center add-on for Windows 8, but that did not have any effect. Several forum posts have suggested installing a codec pack such as the K-Lite codec pack, but I have always had bad experiences with those. I did, however, try to install the Shark007 codec pack, but that didn't work either. I also tried running the following commands (which did complete successfully, mind you) in an elevated command prompt, but they didn't change the outcome. regsvr32 msmpeg2vdec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2adec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2enc.dll I know there are other DVD making programs out there, some are even free, but the few I have tried do not compare to Windows DVD Maker's simplicity and beauty. Is there any way to make it work on Windows 8?

• Setting up dovecot on OpenBSD

  I'm a *nix n00b that just installed dovecot (the selection with no ldap, mysql or pgsql) on OpenBSD 4.0 and I want to set it up for imap use, but I'm having a hard time finding documentation that I can understand. It currently running on port 143 (checked with telnet) but from there I need to do the following: I need some accounts, the once already on the system are fine if I can get those running (seemed to be some dovecot option somehow?), or just adding a few manually is ok too. Was there some setting for this in the default /etc/dovecot.conf? passdb bsdauth {} is uncommented by default... I need to create imap folders, or subfolders. How can I do that? Hopefully not, but anything else I need to do? I want to run without certification validation and no SSL/TLS, would this work by default (client-side settings)?

  I have PostgreSQL 9 running on Windows 2003 SP2. I am trying to replicate it on a Fedora 12 system running PostgreSQL 9 as well. I am hitting this error message: /usr/pgsql-9.0/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/pgsql/9.0/data/ -p 5432 2011-02-11 17:43:26 ISTFATAL: incorrect checksum in control file Because of firewall restrictions, I could not follow the official instructions to the letter. Instead, I zipped the contents of the data directory when the server was offline and copied that to the Linux box. I ran a sha1deep on both directories and there were no mismatches. I changed the rights so that only the postgres user and group had access to the files. Now, what can I do for replication to work? I tried with a 'pg_dumpall', but the system complains that the database IDs do no match.

• Windows Resource Monitoring Programs

  I work at a small tech start up managing websites with our own in house server side code. (In production, we use Windows Server 2008 boxes, running Java 6. In our dev boxes, we use Windows 7 running Java 7.) Recently, we had an issue where some of our boxes in production failed, and we didn't have means of trouble shooting, since we keep little to no monitoring logs about a given box's CPU/memory/RAM usage, etc. So, I'm wondering if there is some commercial/freeware that's the standard for performance monitoring/logging. Essentially, I'm just looking for an analytics system that is similar to the Windows Task Manager or the Resource Monitor, that serializes all of its data periodically. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that's also extensible, in case I'd like to add addition monitors in the future.

• linux ssh -X graphical applications will not start when system load is high

  So I am using ssh -X to access a server. I am at a Xubuntu desktop accessing a Ubuntu server that is in the next room. Usually everything works fine, but when the system load gets high, any graphical applications I have freeze and fail to be restarted. This happens even if the process that is causing the high load has been niced to a low priority with "nice -n 19". And even though the system load is high, the command line works fine with no delay, and other applications I have running on the server (e.g. virtual machines) run fine. But any graphical application running through X dies. When the graphical applications fail they usually give out an error message that suggests a time-out. It seems that something connected to X has a low priority and times out. But what is it, and how does one fix it?

  I have a Flask web application running behind gunicorn and Nginx. Nginx proxies any traffic to ivrhub.org to the correct flask app. I would very much like to use inbox.py to process some incoming email. Running inbox.py's example on my server and then sending an email to [email protected] does not work as I intended. The inbox.py server does not seem to receive anything but the email also does not bounce. I'm missing something conceptually -- is there a DNS setting I need to configure or something I need to adjust with Nginx?

• How to use supervisord to run a PHP script as a daemon?

  I need to have 8 threads of the same PHP script running in the background on a server continuously (as a daemon), and each script need to be automatically restarted if it exits for any reason. I've been advised to use supervisord to do this, but I don't at all understand their documentation, which seems very complicated to me. I also want each of the 8 threads of the script to be initially started at 2 minute intervals (2 minutes in between each launch) but then after this all 8 threads of the same PHP script should continue running on the server forever (and restarting if any exit for any reason). Could someone please explain how to do this with supervisord, or any other easy way of doing it? I'm on CentOS 6. Thank you!

• PostgreSQL automatic backup

  I have been trying to set up a backup script on a windows server. I have used pgAgent (scheduling for pgAdmin), to run the backup script. No problems with the backup script. However, my jobs are not running like they should. I have set both the schedule, and the steps. I am fairly certain, that I am running the service under a wrong user or a user without the required permissions. I run the service like this: "C:\Program Files\pgAdmin III\pgAgent" INSTALL pgAgent -u postgres -p secret hostaddr=127.0.0.1 dbname=pgadmin user=postgres And I get an error, telling me that there was an error with the login information, though I know it's correct. When I go under services (controlpanel -- administration -- services), I am able to start the service with the local user. Can this be the problem? Where can I see or change the permissions on the postgres user?

Will installing these libraries possibly break Zimbra?

• Some DHCP clients end up with wrong DNS server

  The scenario: DC running Windows Server 2008 R2 providing DNS + DHCP Cisco 1811 Router as the gateway 30 Windows XP DHCP clients on the LAN The problem: Some workstations are spontaneously switching to an incorrect DNS server. Specifically, ipconfig /all shows that they start using the gateway as a DNS server. This happens about 5-10 times a day to various computers, sometimes more than once per day. The workaround: Repairing the connection on the XP client always fixes the problem, and the correct DNS server address is obtained. We lost our main DNS/DHCP machine a week ago, and had to bring this one online as a spare. We've been having this issue since then. DHCP leases on the old and new servers are configured for "wired" (8 day) duration. There are definitely no other DHCP servers active on the LAN. So far there is no discernible pattern about which clients will show this problem, or when. When I ran DCDIAG /test:DNS it came back clean. Manual inspection of the DNS zone shows that all the records are appearing as expected, with no traces of the previous machine in there. Update Feb 27: Added screenshots. Here is a screenshot of the DHCP scope options on the 2008 R2 server. And here is a screenshot of ipconfig /all running on a healthy host. I don't have any ailing hosts at the moment, but will grab a screencap next time it happens. Update Feb 28: More screenshots. Here's a screenshot of DHCP and DNS traffic from a healthy client when repairing the local area connection. There's definitely only one server responding, but it does seem strange that the negotiation takes place twice. I'll try to get a similar capture from a sick machine this coming week. Update Mar 01: Caught a bad ipconfig. Here's a screenshot of ipconfig /all from a client that had this issue. It says the lease was issued this morning, but it doesn't even have an entry for the secondary DNS I set up yesterday. Both DNS servers were discovered properly when repairing the connection. Update Mar 01: It even got the sysadmin! This issue finally affected my personal workstation this morning. Unfortunately I had just rebooted and wasn't running a packet dump at the time. I set up a secondary server yesterday, and was logging all DNS traffic to it. My machine had not contacted the secondary DNS in over half an hour, so that says to me that it's just spontaneously reverting to the gateway without even failing over to secondary DNS first. Today I swapped the order of the DNS servers in DHCP, so the secondary is primary and vice versa. I will update again once I know how that goes.

• How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

  I require a virtual network with VLAN be build between two virtual hosts - which can be (lxc/ vbox -ubuntu or win xp). I tried with lxc and vbox with Ubuntu and was finding difficult to make it work without vlan, but was successful with vbox with xp. vbox-xp1 --- br1 ---------------- br2 ---- vbox-xp2 The config is: brctl addbr br1; brctl addbr br2 ifconfig br1 up; ifconfig br2 up stp br1 off; stp br2 off ip link add name br1-br2-l0 type veth peer name br1-br2-l1 sudo brctl addif br1 br1-br2-l0 sudo brctl addif br2 br1-br2-l1 vbox - xp 1 and 2 with network ; bridged and br1 and br2 respectively. The adapter is intel PRO/1000 MT Server and driver installed in guests. Configured IPs and two hosts pinged! VLAN config: ip link add link br1 name br1-2.5 type vlan id 5 brctl addif br2 br1-2.5 create vlan 5 in xp 1 and 2 and assign ip address Ping on with this config does not work. Wireshark trace on interface br1-br2-l1 / br1-2.5 shows that one ping results in ~240 ping packets and each growing by 4 bytes - first one being correct and 60, ping does not reach other host as I see mac is not learnt[arp -a]. -- if br1-2.5 is not configured, I see untagged packets in br1-br2-l1/0, but still not reaching other host as mac is not learnt. if br1-br2-l0/1 is made down, even if br1-2.5 is up, I count not see any packets. I tried with ebtables, but still could not make a correct config to work. -- If any one here are aware of any configuration, please let me know. I need to make a network of switches. Given the modules rundll32.exe is running, do you know which running module(s) would prevent the USB drive from being safely removed, and if so is there a more permanent straightforward solution such as changing an automatic service (the list from services.msc) into a disabled/manual service or maybe something else you can think of?
