• Release Process Improvements

  The process of creating a new build and releasing it to production is a critical step in the SDLC but it is often left as an afterthought and varies greatly from one company to the next. I'm hoping people will share improvements they have made to this process in their organisation so we can all takes steps to 'reduce the pain'. So the question is, specify one painful/time consuming part of your release process and what did you do to improve it? My example: at a previous employer all developers made database changes on one common development database. Then when it came to release time, we used Redgate's SQL Compare to generate a huge script from the differences between the Dev and QA databases. This works reasonably well but the problems with this approach are:- ALL changes in the Dev database are included, some of which may still be 'works in progress'. Sometimes developers made conflicting changes (that were not noticed until the release was in production) It was a time consuming and manual process to create and validate the script (by validate I mean, try to weed out issues like problem 1 and 2). When there were problems with the script (eg the order in which things were run such as creating a record which relies on a foreign key record which is in the script but not yet run) it took time to 'tweak' it so it ran smoothly. It's not an ideal scenario for Continuous Integration. So the solution was:- Enforce a policy of all changes to the database must be scripted. A naming convention was important for ensuring the correct running order of the scripts. Create/Use a tool to run the scripts at release time. Developers had their own copy of the database do develop against (so there was no more 'stepping on each others toes') The next release after we started this process was much faster with fewer problems, indeed the only problems found were due to people 'breaking the rules', eg not creating a script. Once the issues with releasing to QA were fixed, when it came time to release to production it was very smooth. We applied a few other changes (like introducing CI) but this was the most significant, overall we reduced release time from around 3 hours down to a max of 10-15 minutes.

  Hello All Python Pro's , I'm using mamp server for testing out all my web pages. I'm new to python. I'm able to run a script in python interpreter that will normally print a hello world. print "Hello World!" So i used the same line in a file with name test.py . So how should I run this on web. As am new to python, i tried some normal things, placing test.py in /htdocs/cgi-bin/ and trying to open it. But it says forbidden page. Anyone please help me making this work. Thanks

• Where is the .cod file placed when the BlackBerry Widget is built from Eclipse?

  I am experimenting with various mobile platforms, and this is my first day with BB. I am using Web Plug in 2.0.0 with SDK 1.0.0. As I am trying to run one of the samples in the simulator (5.0.0.469, Storem 2 9550) When I run the BB widget, I got the following in the eclipse console, but I could not find the .cod file to be loaded to the simulator. Please help!! • Developing for the iPhone outside Xcode

  I'd like to develop and run my iPhone applications from the command line and my personal editor instead of having to use Xcode. So far I've been able to edit all the files in Emacs and run xcodebuild in the project to compile/link/etc. The next step would be to create a Makefile task to launch the iPhone Simulator with my current application. Any ideas of how can I do that? Update: I'm not interested in XCode calling my editor, I just want to forget about the IDE as much as I can.

I have a problem with running a WS, it looks like my Spring context can't find file persistence.xml Which i am able to believe because i did not have generated META-INF folder in my template (which is Maven project template with archetype org.springframework.ws) I have created META-INF manually.   I have been working on many applications which run as windows service or scheduled tasks. Now, i want to make sure that these applications will be fault tolerant and reliable. For example; i have a service that runs every hour. if the service crashes while its operating or running, i d like the application to run again for the same period, to avoid data loss. moreover, i d like the program to report the error with details. My goal is to avoid data loss and not falling behind for running the program. I have built a class library that a user can import into a project. Library is supposed to keep information of running instance of the program, ie. program reads and writes information of running interval, running status etc. This data is stored in a database. I was curious, if there are some best practices to make the scheduled tasks/ windows services fault tolerant and reliable.

• What is considered a long execution time?

  I am trying to figure out just how "efficient" my server-side code is. Using start and end microtime(true) values, I am able to calculate the time it took my script to run. I am getting times from .3 - .5 seconds. These scripts do a number of database queries to return different values to the user. What is considered an efficient execution time for PHP scripts that will be run online for a website? Note: I know it depends on exactly what is being done, but just consider this a standard script that reads from a database and returns values to the user. Also, I look at Google and see them search the internet in .15 seconds and I feel like my script is crap. Thanks.

• NHibernate transactions randomly not rolled back

  I have a suite of integration tests that run inside transactions. Sometimes it seems that NHibernate transactions are not being correctly rolled back. I can't work out what causes this. • How do I generate coverage xml report for a single package?

  I'm using nose and coverage to generate coverage reports. I only have one package right now, ae, so I specify to only cover that: nosetests -w tests/unit --with-xunit --with-coverage --cover-package=ae And here are the results, which look good: Name Stmts Exec Cover Missing ---------------------------------------------- ae 1 1 100% ae.util 253 224 88% 39, 63-65, 284, 287, 362, 406 ---------------------------------------------- TOTAL 263 234 88% ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ran 68 tests in 5.292s However when I run coverage xml, coverage pulls in more packages than necessary, including python email and logging packages which have nothing to do with my code. If I run coverage xml ae, I get this error: No source for code: '/home/wraith/dev/projects/trimurti/src/ae': [Errno 21] Is a directory: '/home/wraith/dev/projects/trimurti/src/ae' Is there a way to generate the XML for just the ae package?

However, when I run on web server, the output is ++++++ ++++++ So $VAR is missing when passing in the web interface/browser. I know maybe the problem is $VAR is very long string. But anyway, is there anyway to solve this problem except writing the output to a file then retrieve it from browser? Thanks if you are interested in my question.

As far as I understand , such service should run with no problems in session mode. But , the service runs as in per call mode - each time I call AddData , constructor gets called before executing AddData and Dispose() is called after the call. Any ideas why this might be happening?

• C# Application crashes with Buffer Overrun in deployed (.exe) version, but not in Visual Studio

  Hi, I have a c# Windows Forms application that runs perfectly from within Visual Studio, but crashes when its deployed and run from the .exe. It crashes with a Buffer Overrun error...and its pretty clear that this error is not being thrown from within my code. Instead, windows must be detecting some sort of buffer overrun and shutting down the application from the outside. I don't think there's one specific line of code that is causing it..it simply happens intermittently. Does anybody have any thoughts on what the possible causes of a Buffer Overrun error might be, and why it would only occur in the deployed application and not when run from with Visual Studio? • Getting ID of an instance newly launched with ec2-api-tools

  I'm launching an EC2 instance, by invoking ec2-run-instances from simple a bash script, and want to perform further operations on that instance (e.g. associate elastic IP), for which I need the instance id. The command is something like ec2-run-instances ami-dd8ea5a9 -K pk.pem -C cert.pem --region eu-west-1 -t c1.medium -n 1, and its output: RESERVATION r-b6ea58c1 696664755663 default INSTANCE i-945af9e3 ami-dd8ea5b9 pending 0 c1.medium 2010-04-15T10:47:56+0000 eu-west-1a aki-b02a01c4 ari-39c2e94d In this example, i-945af9e3 is the id I'm after. So, I'd need a simple way to parse the id from what the command returns - how would you go about doing it? My AWK is a little rusty... Feel free to use any tool available on a typical Linux box. (If there's a way to get it directly using EC2-API-tools, all the better. But afaik there's no EC2 command to e.g. return the id of the most recently launched instance.)

  Hi Everyone, Looking at creating a simple batch file for my app. My app needs some directories to be in place as it runs. The first method I thought was just make a batch script: @ECHO OFF IF NOT EXIST C:\App GOTO :CREATE ELSE GOTO :DONTCREATE :CREATE MKDIR C:\App\Code ECHO DIRECTORY CREATED :DONTCREATE ECHO IT WAS ALREADY THERE 1) This doesn't run as I would expect. Both :CREATE and :DONTCREATE seem to run regardless? How do I do an If properly then? Output: A subdirectory or file C:\App\Code already exists. DIRECTORY CREATED IT WAS ALREADY THERE So it enters both true and false statements? 2) The app is a C# WPF app. For what I am trying to do here (create a couple of directories if they don't already exist) - should I do it some other way? Perhaps in the application as it runs?

• Serving files inside of directories with ruby and mongrel

  I made a simple web server in Ruby using the Mongrel gem. It works great for files in a single directory, but I run into some path issues when inside a directory. Lets say we have 2 files in a directory named "dir1", "index.html" and "style.css". If we visit http://host/dir1/index.html, the file is found, but style.css isn't because it's trying to load "style.css" from http://host/style.css instead of inside the directory. index.html is trying to load style.css as if its in the same directory as itself. <link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> I can get the file if I enter the full path of style.css: /dir1/style.css but it doesn't seem to remember it's already inside a directory and that no path before a filename should serve from the current directory.   We develop a WinForm application using Scintilla.NET (1.7) component, which uses SciLexer.dll (unamnaged). At run-time, we distribute both 32bit and 64bit SciLexer.dll, and we load the correct one when the application starts (everything works fine).   I am working with Pentaho Data Integration (aka Kettle) and I have several Transformations, let's call them A, B, C, D, E. B depends on A, D depends on C and E depends on B and D. In a job I'd like to run A, B and C, D in parallel: -> A -> B _ Start< \ -> C -> D----> E where A and C run in parallel. Is there any way to execute E only iff B AND D were successful? Right now, looking at the Job metrics, E gets executed as soon as either B OR D are finished.

• Entity Framework Performance Problem

  I'm hoping that someone can help me understand how to overcome a performance problem I'm running into with the latest version of the Entity Framework. In my test, I created my model from a database consisting of around 80 tables. The problem that I'm running into is that the cost of the very first query I run on a thread is very expensive. If I run without pre-compiling views the first query takes anywhere from 5800 to 6600 milliseconds. If I pre-compile the views (see this article) I can get the initial query cost down to about 2800 to 3200 milliseconds. 3 seconds for each request is still unacceptable for my needs. Subsequent queries are very fast. Can you please help me understand how to eliminate the poor performance of the initial query? I'm using the version of entity framework that ships with Visual Studio 2010 RC.
