• Is a web-server (e.g servlets) a good solution for an IM server?

  I'm looking at a new app, broadly speaking an IM application with a strong client-server model - all communications go through a server so they can be logged centrally. The server will be Java in some form, clients could at this point be anything from a .NET Desktop app to Flex/Silverlight, to a simple web-interface using JS/AJAX. I had anticipated doing the server using standard J2EE so I get a thread-safe, multi-user server for 'free'... to make things simple let's say using Servlets (but in practice SpringMVC would be likely). This all seemed very neat but I'm concerned if the stateless nature of Servlets is the best approach. If my memory of servlets (been a year or two) is right, each time a client sent a HTTP request, typically a new message entered by the user, the servlet could not assume it had the user/chat in memory and might have to get it from the DB... regardless it has to look it up. Then it either has to use some PUSH system to inform other members of the chat, or cache that there are new messages, for other clients who poll the server using AJAX or similar - and when they poll it again has to lookup the chat, including new messages, and send the new data. I'm wondering if a better system would be the server is running core Java, and implements a socket-based communication with clients. This allows much more immediate data transfer and is more flexible if say the IM client included some game you could play. But then you're writing a custom server and sockets don't sound very friendly to a browser-based client on current browsers. Am I missing some big piece of the puzzle here, it kind of feels like I am? Perhaps a better way to ask the question would simply be "if the client was browser-based using HTML/JS and had to run on IE7+,FF2+ (i.e no HTML5), how would you implement the server?" edit: if you are going to suggest using XMPP, I have been trying to get my head around this in another question, so please consider if that's a more appropriate place to discuss this specifically.

• Fast serialization/deserialization of structs

  I have huge amont of geographic data represented in simple object structure consisting only structs. All of my fields are of value type. public struct Child { readonly float X; readonly float Y; readonly int myField; } public struct Parent { readonly int id; readonly int field1; readonly int field2; readonly Child[] children; } The data is chunked up nicely to small portions of Parent[]-s. Each array contains a few thousands Parent instances. I have way too much data to keep all in memory, so I need to swap these chunks to disk back and forth. (One file would result approx. 2-300KB). What would be the most efficient way of serializing/deserializing the Parent[] to a byte[] for dumpint to disk and reading back? Concerning speed, I am particularly interested in fast deserialization, write speed is not that critical. Would simple BinarySerializer good enough? Or should I hack around with StructLayout (see accepted answer)? I am not sure if that would work with array field of Parent.children. UPDATE: Response to comments - Yes, the objects are immutable (code updated) and indeed the children field is not value type. 300KB sounds not much but I have zillions of files like that, so speed does matter.

• Permission Denied error in IE when closing popups

  Hi everyone! I have a simple web testing application which is supposed to open and close several popups by itself (without user interaction). For this purpose i have a javascript function to access the variable where the popup reference is stored and close it if it´s not null, fairly simple. However I get random errors in IE (in FF it works as expected, all popups are closed correctly) like Message: No such interface supported Line: 86 Char: 3 Code: 0 URI: http://10.10.0.61:10000/savmailer/adm/tests/common_tests_code.js and Message: Permission denied Line: 86 Char: 3 Code: 0 URI: http://10.10.0.61:10000/savmailer/adm/tests/common_tests_code.js The line 86 references exactly the point at which I do popup.close(); in the following function function closePopupWindow(popup){ if (popup != null) { popup.close(); popup = null; } } I have googled and it seems this permission denied error is quite common to come through among IE developers, however there´s no clear solution for it, it´s just a matter of changing the code slightly "to please" IE, so to speak. However i have no idea how to change mine since it´s just 3 lines! Tried also to change the security browser settings by adding my domain to the trusted zone, but nothing, doesn't help either. If anyone has any helpful idea or notices something i might be forgetting, please, reply to this! Thanks in advance, Kenia

• In CakePHP, how do I create a form to list models withing a date range?

  I have a very simple model that includes the auto-filled field much like 'created'. (DateTime format). I'd like to use the Form helpers if possible, to validate the date fields and whatnot. I'd like a simple form with a "Begin Date" (YMD, 12 hours), and an "End Date" (same format). There is already a controller action set up as follows: function view_between($start_date = null, $end_date = null) { // ... stuff that works correctly when the URL is manually entered. } Have I defined the controller wrong, or how can I pass these values into that function? The reason I'm stuck is because I tried adding a $form->input('my_datetime_field' ...) twice, but obviously the name/id were the same on the respective elements. I have also tried using $form->dateTime(...) with similar results. I'm not sure how to uniquely identify a Begin and End date selection, when it should interact with a single field. Am I going about this wrong? A kind shove in the right direction should suffice.

• Peculiar JRE behaviour running RMI server under load, should I worry?

  I've been developing a minimalistic Java rich client CRUD application framework for the past few years, mostly as a hobby but also actively using it to write applications for my current employer. The framework provides database access to clients either via a local JDBC based connection or a lightweight RMI server. Last night I started a load testing application, which ran 100 headless clients, bombarding the server with requests, each client waiting only 1 - 2 seconds between running simple use cases, consisting of selecting records along with associated detail records from a simple e-store database (Chinook). This morning when I looked at the telemetry results from the server profiling session I noticed something which to me seemed strange (and made me keep the setup running for the remainder of the day), I don't really know what conclusions to draw from it. Here are the results: Memory GC activity Threads CPU load Interesting, right? So the question is, is this normal or erratic? Is this simply the JRE (1.6.0_03 on Windows XP) doing it's thing (perhaps related to the JRE configuration) or is my framework design somehow causing this? Running the server against MySQL as opposed to an embedded H2 database does not affect the pattern. I am leaving out the details of my server design, but I'll be happy to elaborate if this behaviour is deemed erratic.

• MySQL COUNT() total posts within a specific criteria?

  Hey, I've been losing my hair trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, let me explain abit about my MySQL structure (so you get a better understanding) before I go straight to the question. I have a simple PHP forum and I have a column in both tables (for posts and topics) named 'deleted' if it equals 0 that means its displayed (considered not deleted/exists) or if it equals 1 it hidden (considered deleted/doesn't exist) - bool/lean. Now, the 'specific criteria' I'm on about...I'm wanting to get a total post count within a specific forum using its id (forum_id), ensuring it only counts posts which are not deleted (deleted = 0) and their parent topics are not deleted either (deleted = 0). The column/table names are self explanatory (see my efforts below for them - if needed). I've tried the following (using a 'simple' JOIN): SELECT COUNT(t1.post_id) FROM forum_posts AS t1, forum_topics AS t2 WHERE t1.forum_id = '{$forum_id}' AND t1.deleted = 0 AND t1.topic_id = t2.topic_id AND t2.deleted = 0 LIMIT 1 I've also tried this (using a Subquery): SELECT COUNT(t1.post_id) FROM forum_posts AS t1 WHERE t1.forum_id = '{$forum_id}' AND t1.deleted = 0 AND (SELECT deleted FROM forum_topics WHERE topic_id = t1.topic_id) = 0 LIMIT 1 But both don't comply with the specific criteria. For me the simples way to do that is to use a table: <table> <tr> <td> Content of the first column. </td> <td> Content of the second column. </td> </tr> </table> I like this solution because, first of all, it works (it gives exactly what I want), it is also really simple and stable (I will always have two columns, no matter how big is my window). It is easy to control the size and position of the table. However, I know that people do not like the table-layout and, as far as I know, they use div and css instead. So, I would like also to try this approach. Can anybody help me with that? I would like to have a simple solution (without tricks) that is easy to remember. It also needs to be stable (so that it will not accidentally happen that one column is under another one or they overlap or something like that).

• Continuously updating chat messages

  I'm creating a very simple chat application. It has an ASP.NET web page as front-end and a WCF service as back-end for storing the messages to a database. Everything works great except one thing; when Browser A enters a chat message I want Browser B to see the message as soon as possible (yeah, I know, that's the purpose of a chat). What I've done so far is to setup a trigger within the UpdatePanel, like this: <Triggers> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="chatTimer" EventName="Tick" /> </Triggers> which uses a timer: <asp:Timer ID="chatTimer" runat="server" OnTick="chatTimer_Tick" Interval="1000" /> Is this the best approach or is there a better, yet simple, way to accomplish updating of messages. One drawback with this solution is that the textbox used to enter chat messages loses focus every time the Tick event runs. Any piece of feedback or advice regarding updating of messages is appreciated. Thank you!

• SVN Version Rollback Question

  Hello, I'm using SVN (TortoiseSVN) and often came into the following situation: I wanted to discard any changes since a specific (old) revision and turn all files back to this specific (old) version. Then I wanted to work further as if this specific (old) revision was the newest one, i.e. I wanted to be able to commit the specific old revision as a new revision. I found several solutions for this problem (for example stackoverflow.com/questions/402159/roll-back-or-revert-entire-svn-repository-to-an-older-revision or rustyrazorblade.com/2007/04/how-to-roll-back-commits-to-an-earlier-version-of-a-repository-in-svn/). However, I wonder if there is a simple way to roll back to a specific revision. I thought version control is just good for such things (or am I misunderstanding something?). Is there a simple command/button/etc. that takes an updates my local repository to an old revision and declares it to be the newest one? Since I suppose that there is no "built-in" function to do this, I wanted to know what reason lead the developers to the decision not to integrate this feature. Does anybody know this?

• Plugin architecture in C using libdl

  I've been toying around, writing a small IRC framework in C that I'm now going to expand with some core functionality - but beyond that, I'd like it to be extensible with plugins! Up until now, whenever I wrote something IRC related (and I wrote a lot, in about 6 different languages now... I'm on fire!) and actually went ahead to implement a plugin architecture, it was inside an interpreted language that had facilities for doing (read: abusing) so, like jamming a whole script file trough eval in Ruby (bad!). Now I want to abuse something in C! Basically there's three things I could do define a simple script language inside of my program use an existing one, embedding an interpreter use libdl to load *.so modules on runtime I'm fond of the third one and raather avoid the other two options if possible. Maybe I'm a masochist of some sort, but I think it could be both fun and useful for learning purposes. Logically thinking, the obvious "pain-chain" would be (lowest to highest) 2 - 1 - 3, for the simple reason that libdl is dealing with raw code that can (and will) explode in my face more often than not. So this question goes out to you, fellow users of stackoverflow, do you think libdl is up to this task, or even a realistic thought?

  Is there a simple way to flatten a list while retaining the original types of list constituents?.. Is there a way to programmatically construct a heterogeneous list?.. For instance, I want to create a simple wrapper for functions like png(filename,width,height) that would take device name, file name, and a list of options. The naive approach would be something like my.wrapper <- function(dev,name,opts) { do.call(dev,c(filename=name,opts)) } or similar code with unlist(list(...)). This doesn't work because opts gets coerced to character, and the resulting call is e.g. png(filename,width="500",height="500"). If there's no straightforward way to create heterogeneous lists like that, is there a standard idiomatic way to splice arguments into functions without naming them explicitly (e.g. do.call(dev,list(filename=name,width=opts["width"]))? -- Edit -- Gavin Simpson answered both questions below in his discussion about constructing wrapper functions. Let me give a summary of the answer to the title question: It is possible to construct a heterogeneous list with c() provided the arguments to c() are lists. I have an index on books.author_id and it works perfectly, but I do not know how to create an index on authors table, so that this query could use it. • How do I constrain a container's height to the height of a specific content element?

  I'm trying to do something which seems like it should be extremely simple and yet I can't see how. I have a very simple layout, a TextBox with an image next to it, similar to the way it might look adorned with an ErrorProvider in a WinForms application. The problem is, I want the image to be no higher than the TextBox it's next to. If I lay it out like this, say: <Grid> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <TextBox Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="0" MinWidth="100"/> <Image Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="1" Source="error.png" /> </Grid> the row will size to the height of the image if the image is taller than the TextBox. This also happens if I use a DockPanel or StackPanel. The naive solution would be to bind the Height to the TextBox's ActualHeight. I'm sure this is wrong. But what's right?

Problem 1.) The OrderBy does not work, what do I need to change it to get it to show the results by posted date in descending order. Problem 2.) I am going to adding a VERY SIMPLE pagination, and therefore only want to show 4 results per page. How would I be best going about this? Thanks EDIT: In addition to problem 2, I'm looking for a simple Helper class solution to implement said pagination into my current code. I've declared the following interface and then I can code against it in C#. • PHP include taking too long

  I have a php file with around 100mb which is full of arrays (only arrays). I've made a script that includes this file (for processing), first it exhausted the default Xampp 128mb memory limit, i've raised it to 1024mb but it just takes forever and doesn't do anything. I'm sure the problem is being created by the sheer size of the file because i've tried removing all lines of code and just leaving the include and an echo for me to know when it finishes executing, and it does the same thing (which is taking forever), i've also tried to run the 100mb file in separate and same thing again. A 10mb file is taking forever as well but a similar 1mb file is almost instantly read and executed so the problem must be more than just the file size. I was avoiding using c++ for a simple project as this and would rather not to as php is easier for me and the task that will be executed doesn't need to benefit from the added speed that it would have if it had been done in c++ but if i have no luck in solving this problem i guess i'll have to. EDIT Reasons for not using a database: 1-Whoever made it didn't used a database and it will be pretty hard to store this in an organized database if i'm not able to do something with it first, like just reading it, copying parts from it or putting in memory or something. 2-I don't have experience working with databases as pretty much all stuff i've ever done in php didn't needed large amounts of stored data, 50kb at best, if i was thinking about a big project or huge chunks of data as this one, i definitely would, but i didn't made this mess to start with and now i have to undo it. 3-The logic for having to store a small portion of data like 10mb in hard drive when now every computer has pretty much enough ram to fit the whole OS in it is pretty much incomprehensible unless someone gives a good explanation about it, if i had to access a lot of said files simultaneously i would understand but like i said, this is a simple project, this is the only file that will be accessed at a given time this isn't even to make some kind of website, it's to run a few times and be done with it.

• fastest public web app framework for quick DB apps?

  I'd like to pick up a new tech for my toolbox - something for rapid prototyping of web apps. Brief requirements: public access (not hosted on my machine) - like Google's appengine, etc no tricky configuration necessary to build a simple web app host DB access (small storage provided) including some kind of SQLish query language easy front end HTML templating ability to access as a JSON service C# or Java,PHP or Python - or a fun new language to learn is OK free! An example app, very simple: render an AJAXy editable (add/delete/edit/drag) list of rich-data list items via some template language, so I can quickly mock up a UI for a client. ie. I can do most of the work client-side, but need convenient back end to handle the permanent storage. (In fact I suppose it doesn't even need HTML templating if I can directly access a DB via AJAX calls.) I realize this is a bit vague but am wondering if anyone has recommendations. A Rails host might be best for this (but probably not free) or maybe App Engine, or some other choice I'm not aware of? I've been doing everything with heavyweight servers (ASP.NET etc) for so long that I'm just not up on the latest... Thanks - I'll follow up on comments if this isn't clear enough :)

For a responsive website, i need to use the same toggle element for both a toggle system for one window width, and another toggle system for a second window width.   I am new to programming and come from a non-CS background (no formal degree). I mostly program winforms using C#. I am confused about 32 bit and 64 bit.... I mean, have heard about 32 bit OS, 32 bit processor and based on which a program can have maximum memory. How it affects the speed of a program. There are lot more questions which keep coming to mind. I tried to go through some Computer Organization and Architecture books. But, either I am too dumb to understand what is written in there or the writers assume that the reader has some CS background. Can someone explain me these things in a plain simple English or point me to something which does that. EDIT: I have read things like In 32-bit mode, they can access up to 4GB memory; in 64-bit mode, they can access much much more....I want to know WHY to all such things.   For my game, I am making the main game view as a plain Flash/AS3 class, something like: public class GameArena extends Sprite This is simply a big rectangle in which game objects are drawn, so no need for fancy UI and I want to keep the main game engine Flex-free so I can use Sprites rather than heavier Flex components. However for the entire game/app, I do still want to use Flex for GUI/layout. So I thought I could create a Flex class subclassing UIComponent, which has a GameView object as a child... now I can use this in MXML as a standard Flex component. e.g. public class ArenaView extends UIComponent { public var gameArena:GameArena; override protected function createChildren():void { super.createChildren(); if (!gameArena) { gameArena = new GameArena(); gameArena.width = 200; gameArena.height = 200; addChild(gameArena); } } } Then I have a simple line in my main App MXML like: <logic:Arena x="0" y="0" width="50%" height="100%" name="TestArenaPanel" /> But so far while my code compiles, the Flash class isn't getting rendered. Maybe it's something simple, but I wanted to ask if this is a reasonable approach, or there is something better? BTW: I've had the "should Flex be used" conversation many times. • Optimize SQL query (Facebook-like application)

  My application is similar to Facebook, and I'm trying to optimize the query that get user records. The user records are that he as src ou dst. The src is in usermuralentry directly, the dst list are in usermuralentry_user. So, a entry can have one src and many dst.
