• How to include all objects of an archive in a shared object?

  When compiling our project, we create several archives (static libraries), say liby.a and libz.a that each contains an object file defining a function y_function() and z_function(). Then, these archives are joined in a shared object, say libyz.so, that is one of our main distributable target. g++ -fPIC -c -o y.o y.cpp ar cr liby.a y.o g++ -fPIC -c -o z.o z.cpp ar cr libz.a z.o g++ -shared -L. -ly -lz -o libyz.so When using this shared object into the example program, say x.c, the link fails because of an undefined references to functions y_function() and z_function(). g++ x.o -L. -lyz -o xyz It works however when I link the final executable directly with the archives (static libraries). g++ x.o -L. -ly -lz -o xyz My guess is that the object files contained in the archives are not linked into the shared library because they are not used in it. How to force inclusion? Edit: Inclusion can be forced using --whole-archive ld option. But if results in compilation errors: g++ -shared '-Wl,--whole-archive' -L. -ly -lz -o libyz.so /usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(elf-init.oS): In function `__libc_csu_init': (.text+0x1d): undefined reference to `__init_array_end' /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(elf-init.oS): relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against undefined hidden symbol `__init_array_end' can not be used when making a shared object /usr/bin/ld: final link failed: Bad value Any idea where this comes from?

• T61, NVidia, Ubuntu 9.10 == Video problems

  Hi, Upgraded to latest Ubuntu, currently 9.10. Videos used to work fine. Now, playing videos using VLC or any other media player shows them 'sepia' tinged when playing. This is annoying. I remember this used to happen on occasion (after resuming from suspect), and I forget what I fiddled with to make it better. Does anyone have the method to force video to render correctly with this combination? It happens even after a reboot. Thanks

• Laptop Power down.

  This question relates to my ACER laptop running Windows VISTA. Currently when I close the lid of my laptop the laptop does not power down, however when I open the lid it does. When looking at the power settings it is set to power down when closing the lid. The trigger to this seems to be the lid being opened not being closed. I seem to recall this behaviour changing when I installed Windows Media centre. Any ideas on how I can get the power down to work on the lid closing. thanks

• Formatting Telerik Chart and Legend Labels in Silverlight

  I am trying to format a column called 'Month' using the 3-character month abbreviation in my data grid which is bound to a bar chart. My grid and chart are based on this demo example: http://demos.telerik.com/silverlight/#Chart/Aggregates. Basically, the grid compiles data and summarizes by Year, Quarter, Month, and then some other categories as well. For the Month column, I tried two different methods (for sorting purposes, I have to use an integer or some date value for the month). First, I just made Month an integer field and then used a converter mapped in the xaml for the 'Month' field to display 'JAN', 'FEB', etc. This worked fine for the grid, but the chart would display 1, 2, etc. instead of the month abbreviation. I researched this and was not able to come up with a solution to map the converter to the chart. So, I tried making the Month field a datetime and then set the value to 1/1/1900, 2/1/1900, etc. and specified the format of the field to 'MMM' in the xaml for the grid. I then used the following statement to set the the format in the chart when the user grouped by month: SalesAnalysisChart.DefaultView.ChartArea.AxisX.DefaultLabelFormat = "MMM"; This partially worked in that when the months were displayed across the x-axis they were labeled properly, but not when they appeared in the legend (the user, of course, can group by any of the columns which may or may not include month). I've tried setting LegendItemLabelFormat, ItemLabelFormat, etc. but without success. I'm not sure of the element on which to set the property. I only need to change the default format for just the Month column - all other columns should display normally when grouped. I also came across a class called 'LegendItemFormatConverter' which looks promising but I can't find any examples as to how to implement it. I would actually prefer the converter method because the converter I wrote displays the month abbreviation in all caps, whereas the 'MMM' format displays in upper/lower case. • Connect to wired and wireless networks at same time, Ubuntu

  Currently, I have a media PC running Ubuntu 10.04 that I am trying to connect via a wired network cable directly to a NAS box, and wirelessly to the router. This works no problem after I run sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart but I can't get both interfaces to come up on system startup. My /etc/network/interfaces file reads as follows: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.0.1.2 netmask 255.255.254.0 broadcast 10.0.1.255 network 10.0.1.0 auto wlan2 iface wlan2 inet dhcp As I say, I know this works, because I can get it to work by restarting the network interfaces, but I can't bring them both up on system startup. Does anyone know why this might be?

  I am using HP Data Protector A.06.11 in my organization, with HP EML E-SeriesEML library, with 4 drives using LTO-4 tapes, and i am having some problems. Yesterday I put 5 new tapes in the robot and formatted them. At that time, the robot got just those empty 5 tapes with empty space. (all the rest of the tapes are red, or with protection) Today in the morning after the night (1 backup run at night), and 2 of the new tapes are red (the properties are): Writes : 2 Overwrites : 1 Errors : 9 I format one of them, and check for each drive if the tape become red, no one of the drives do it. In the main pool properties, in media condition got: Valid for : 36 (months) Maximum overwrites : 250

• When Clearing an ObservableCollection, There are No Items in e.OldItems

  I have something here that is really catching me off guard. I have an ObservableCollection of T that is filled with items. I also have an event handler attached to the CollectionChanged event. When you Clear the collection it causes an CollectionChanged event with e.Action set to NotifyCollectionChangedAction.Reset. Ok, that's normal. But what is weird is that neither e.OldItems or e.NewItems has anything in it. I would expect e.OldItems to be filled with all items that were removed from the collection. Has anyone else seen this? And if so, how have they gotten around it? Some background: I am using the CollectionChanged event to attach and detach from another event and thus if I don't get any items in e.OldItems ... I won't be able to detach from that event. CLARIFICATION: I do know that the documentation doesn't outright state that it has to behave this way. But for every other action, it is notifying me of what it has done. So, my assumption is that it would tell me ... in the case of Clear/Reset as well. Below is the sample code if you wish to reproduce it yourself. • Webfaction apache + mod_wsgi + django configuration issue

  A problem that I stumbled upon recently, and, even though I solved it, I would like to hear your opinion of what correct/simple/adopted solution would be. I'm developing website using Django + python. When I run it on local machine with "python manage.py runserver", local address is http://127.0.0.1:8000/ by default. However, on production server my app has other url, with path - like "http://server.name/myproj/" I need to generate and use permanent urls. If I'm using {% url view params %}, I'm getting paths that are relative to / , since my urls.py contains this urlpatterns = patterns('', (r'^(\d+)?$', 'myproj.myapp.views.index'), (r'^img/(.*)$', 'django.views.static.serve', {'document_root': settings.MEDIA_ROOT + '/img' }), (r'^css/(.*)$', 'django.views.static.serve', {'document_root': settings.MEDIA_ROOT + '/css' }), ) So far, I see 2 solutions: modify urls.py, include '/myproj/' in case of production run use request.build_absolute_uri() for creating link in views.py or pass some variable with 'hostname:port/path' in templates Are there prettier ways to deal with this problem? Thank you. Update: Well, the problem seems to be not in django, but in webfaction way to configure wsgi. Apache configuration for application with URL "hostname.com/myapp" contains the following line WSGIScriptAlias / /home/dreamiurg/webapps/pinfont/myproject.wsgi So, SCRIPT_NAME is empty, and the only solution I see is to get to mod_python or serve my application from root. Any ideas?

Is the code violating any standards ? • Why does my App.Config codebase not help .NET locate my assembly?

As far as I know, the runtime should parse the app.config file before looking for an assembly in the client app directory. The unhandled exception (wrapped for readability) is: Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Users\djpiter\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\70536\Chapter9\bin\Debug\AssemblyPrivate.exe' or one of its dependencies. • Windows 8, Truecrypt drive mounts but Windows cannot read its content

  I installed Windows 8 and when I started it, it said that it was repairing a disk. The disk was an encrypted Truecrypt disk. I couldn't mount the disk in Truecrypt after that. I tried to repair the header and it worked, now I can mount the disk but neither Windows 7 or 8 can read the content. Windows asks if it should format the disk. I have all the important files on backup, but there are some media files that I would like to get back. Any ideas?

• Plug and Go NAS Storage

  My wife and I are separating. One of the things we need to extricate is the media we have accumulated over the years. So I am looking for a NAS solution that is a) relatively low-cost, b) reliable and c) easy for a non-geek to use (I don't want to be tech support). All it needs to do is hold our iTunes library, photos, course work and maybe some movies and TV shows that I currently have. She will be connecting via her Netbook. I have seen this thread but the reviews on Amazon aren't particularly favourable. Due to the need for simplicity, WHS and FreeNAS are none-starters. I need redundancy as if a single drive system was to die then she would lose her course work and photos. Is the ReadyNAS the only real solution out there?

After receiving this number, the program has to show the n prime of the list of primes. For example, if the user enters "3", the program is supposed to display "5", because 5 is the third prime starting at 2. • Error in joining 4 AVI files

  I have 4 avi files. Each file can be played properly in VLC player, Windows media player. Video-Audio Codec type in each of this avi file is Xvid-Mpga. I used below avi joiners: Quick AVI joiner, AVI join, BoilSoft Video Joiner(trial version), but all of them gave an error when i select the first part avi file saying : "format of the part1.avi file cannot be recognized".. What could be the problem. How do i join these AVI files. Any pointers will help. Thanks. -AD.

• iTunes Sync erasing Exchange calendar / contacts

  We have had a handful of instances where corporate iPhone users will be syncing Calendar/Contacts/etc in their iTunes settings, and we would like to prevent this. Unfortunately, when they sync their empty home Outlook calendars it then overwrites everything in their iPhone calendar. This has the unpleasant side effect up "updating" Exchange and wiping out every meeting they have. Luckily, our backups have bailed us out in each case - there seems to be no recovering from it any other way as the data is gone. We prefer to allow our users to continue loading media on their phones, which we believe requires iTunes. Is there a way, through Exchange ActiveSync or iOS mobile management, to prevent this from happening?

  I'm trying to work with a non-editable JTextArea added to a JScrollPane. I want a line to be highlighted when the user clicks on that specific line. • Accessing global variable in multithreaded Tomcat server

  I have a singleton object that I construct like thus: private static volatile KeyMapper mapper = null; public static KeyMapper getMapper() { if(mapper == null) { synchronized(Utils.class) { if(mapper == null) { mapper = new LocalMemoryMapper(); } } } return mapper; } The class KeyMapper is basically a synchronized wrapper to HashMap with only two functions, one to add a mapping and one to remove a mapping. When running in Tomcat 6.24 on my 32bit Windows machine everything works fine. However when running on a 64 bit Linux machine (CentOS 5.4 with OpenJDK 1.6.0-b09) I add one mapping and print out the size of the HashMap used by KeyMapper to verify the mapping got added (i.e. verify size = 1). Then I try to retrieve the mapping with another request and I keep getting null and when I checked the size of the HashMap it was 0. I'm confident the mapping isn't accidentally being removed since I've commented out all calls to remove (and I don't use clear or any other mutators, just get and put). The requests are going through Tomcat 6.24 (configured to use 200 threads with a minimum of 4 threads) and I passed -Xnoclassgc to the jvm to ensure the class isn't inadvertently getting garbage collected (jvm is also running in -server mode). I also added a finalize method to KeyMapper to print to stderr if it ever gets garbage collected to verify that it wasn't being garbage collected. I'm at my wits end and I can't figure out why one minute the entry in HashMap is there and the next it isn't :(
