• PHP upload with progress bar

  Hi all I want to create an upload form to upload large files. Thats pretty much easy, however, the upload process itself taks long and basically looks like nothing is happening for a few minutes. So now I'd like to insert a progress bar to show the user that something is happening and they should just sit tight. I've read of numerous methods like APC and certian flash plugins, but my site is hosted on a shared server and I cant install any new applications on it. I'm thinking, maybe if it is possible to read the size of the temp file it creates via an ajax page. By polling the size every few seconds I should be able to get the progress of the upload. Now the question I pose is...where is the temp file situated?

• Cannot access BIOS on a Lenovo U410

  I recently took a step into Linux on my Lenovo Idea pad U410; after a couple hours I managed to get it installed with the drivers. However now I no longer have the ability to access the BIOS. I tried the usual FN+F2, F2,F1,Del,Tab,F12,F11; all to no avail. I was wondering is there something different to be done running Ubuntu? I know that the BIOS would generally not be affected by the OS. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• JRuby 1.7.0 will not install bundler given plenty of memory

  I installed jruby with rvm install jruby-1.7.0 and it ran out of memory when it tried to create the gemsets so I started by trying to install bundler with the new version and this is what I get ~>gem install bundler Error: Your application used more stack memory than the safety cap of 2048K. Specify -J-Xss####k to increase it (#### = cap size in KB). Specify -w for full StackOverflowError stack trace So I moved up the memory and I still got nothing with a huge chunk of memory ~>JRUBY_OPTS=-J-Xss1024m gem install bundler Error: Your application used more stack memory than the safety cap of 1024M. • Best way to model map values in Grails?

  Hi guys, I have to implement map values in my Grails app. I have a class that can contain 0..N OsmTags, and the key is unique. In Java I would model this with a Map in each object, but I don't know how to map classes in Grails. So I defined this class: class OsmTag { /** OSM tag name, e.g. natural */ String key /** OSM tag value, e.g. park */ String value static constraints = { key blank:false, size:2..80,matches:/[\S]+/, unique:false value blank:false, size:1..250,matches:/[\S]+/, unique:false } } That works ok, but it's actually quite ugly because the tag key is not unique. • unable to enter bios

  I have an asus desktop ( amd phenom X6 processor) which was preinstalled with windows 7. I wanted to install ubuntu on it (dual boot) but am unable to do so because of the boot order. So I thought of changing boot order thru bios. But it turns out, if I press any key while the computer is starting, it just doesnt boots. I can see that the keyboard and mouse are booted up. (the lights are on) but the monitor is in standby mode.. I tried tab, f2,f10, delete key. But nothing is working.. Is there a software or other alternate on how can I change boot order ? Thanks

• UINavigation Bar while moving view for writing in a textfield

  i'm using this code to move the view when i'm about to type on a textfield, otherwise the keyboard may cover the textfield if it's in the lower side of the screen. I would like to know if there is a way to maintain the UINavigation Bar in it's place, because with this code the bar will move with all the view outside the screen, becoming untouchable until i end editing the textfield (closing the keyboard). • Custom keybindings without gnome-settings-daemon

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 (Fallback) and I am trying to slim it down, mostly for fun/learning experience. I killed gnome-settings-daemon because I set up my theming from elsewhere. But now some of my keybindings are lost. I think the windowmanager ones are still working, like Alt-Tab and switch workspace. But my mediakeys to change volume and my custom keybindings are not working anymore. Is there a different way to save custom keybindings? Do I really need to run settings-manager to setup my keybindings?

  Hello gcc 4.4.4 c89 I am just wondering is it worth passing a const into a function. i.e. void do_something(const char *dest, const int size) The size is a read-only so I don't want to change it. However, some developers never have this as const has it is a local copy that is being used. The pointer is const as you can change the value in the calling routine. I always have a const on read-only local copies, as it confirms to anyone reading my code that it is a read-only variable. And also, when coding I don't make the mistake of changing it without realizing. Many thanks for any suggestions,

• Android USB Host Communication

  I'm working on a project that utilizes the USB Host capabilities in Android 3.2. I'm suffering from a deplorable lack of knowledge and talent regarding USB/Serial communication in general. I'm also unable to find any good example code for what I need to do. I need to read from a USB Communication Device. Ex: When I connect via Putty (on my PC) I enter: >GO And the device starts spewing out data for me. Pitch/Roll/Temp/Checksum. Ex: $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.987T26.3*61 $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.985T26.3*63 I can send the initial 'GO' command from the Android device at which time I receive an echo of 'GO'. Then nothing else on any subsequent reads. How can I: 1) Send the 'go' command. 2) Read in the stream of data that results. The USB device I'm working with has the following interfaces (endpoints). Device Class: Communication Device (0x2) Interfaces: Interface #0 Class: Communication Device (0x2) Endpoint #0 Direction: Inbound (0x80) Type: Intrrupt (0x3) Poll Interval: 255 Max Packet Size: 32 Attributes: 000000011 Interface #1 Class: Communication Device Class (CDC) (0xa) Endpoint #0 Address: 129 Number: 1 Direction: Inbound (0x80) Type: Bulk (0x2) Poll Interval (0) Max Packet Size: 32 Attributes: 000000010 Endpoint #1 Address: 2 Number: 2 Direction: Outbound (0x0) Type: Bulk (0x2) Poll Interval (0) Max Packet Size: 32 Attributes: 000000010 I'm able to deal with permission, connect to the device, find the correct interface and assign the endpoints. • Data Source Security Part 5

  If you read through the first four parts of this series on data source security, you should be an expert on this focus area.  There is one more small topic to cover related to WebLogic Resource permissions.  After that comes the test, I mean example, to see with a real set of configuration parameters what the results are with some concrete values. WebLogic Resource Permissions All of the discussion so far has been about database credentials that are (eventually) used on the database side.  WLS has resource credentials to control what WLS users are allowed to access JDBC resources.  These can be defined on the Policies tab on the Security tab associated with the data source.  There are four permissions: “reserve” (get a new connection), “admin”, “shrink”, and reset (plus the all-inclusive “ALL”); we will focus on “reserve” here because we are talking about getting connections.  By default, JDBC resource permissions are completely open – anyone can do anything.  As soon as you add one policy for a permission, then all other users are restricted.  For example, if I add a policy so that “weblogic” can reserve a connection, then all other users will fail to reserve connections unless they are also explicitly added.  The validation is done for WLS user credentials only, not database user credentials.  Configuration of resources in general is described at “Create policies for resource instances” http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24329_01/apirefs.1211/e24401/taskhelp/security/CreatePoliciesForResourceInstances.html.  This feature can be very useful to restrict what code and users can get to your database. There are the three use cases: API Use database credentials User for permission checking getConnection() True or false Current WLS user getConnection(user,password) False User/password from API getConnection(user,password) True Current WLS user If a simple getConnection() is used or database credentials are enabled, the current user that is authenticated to the WLS system is checked. If database credentials are not enabled, then the user and password on the API are used. Example The following is an actual example of the interactions between identity-based-connection-pooling-enabled, oracle-proxy-session, and use-database-credentials. On the database side, the following objects are configured.- Database users scott; jdbcqa; jdbcqa3- Permission for proxy: alter user jdbcqa3 grant connect through jdbcqa;- Permission for proxy: alter user jdbcqa grant connect through jdbcqa; The following WebLogic Data Source objects are configured.- Users weblogic, wluser- Credential mapping “weblogic” to “scott”- Credential mapping "wluser" to "jdbcqa3"- Data source descriptor configured with user “jdbcqa”- All tests are run with Set Client ID set to true (more about that below).- All tests are run with oracle-proxy-session set to false (more about that below). If this was not an Oracle thin driver, the one case with the non-null Proxy in the above table would throw an exception because proxy session is only supported, implicitly or explicitly, with the Oracle thin driver. When oracle-proxy-session is set to true, the only cases that will pass (with a proxy of "jdbcqa") are the following.1. Setting use-database-credentials to true and doing getConnection(jdbcqa3,…) or getConnection().2. Setting use-database-credentials to false and doing getConnection(wluser, …) or getConnection(). Summary There are many options to choose from for data source security.  Considerations include the number and volatility of WLS and Database users, the granularity of data access, the depth of the security identity (property on the connection or a real user), performance, coordination of various components in the software stack, and driver capabilities.  Now that you have the big picture (remember that table in part 1), you can make a more informed choice.

• How to retain canvas state and use it in onDraw() method

  I want to make a measure tape component for my app. It should look something like this with values from 0cm to 1000cm: Initially I created long bitmap image with repeated tape background. I drew that image to canvas in onDraw() method of my TapeView (extended ImageView). At the beginning everything worked beautifully but I realised that the app uses a Lot of memory and sometimes crashed with OutOfMemory exception. It was obvious because a size of the bitmap image was ~4mb! In order to increase the performance, instead of creating the bitmap I use Drawable (with the yellow tape strip) and set the tile mode to REPEAT: setTileModeX(TileMode.REPEAT); The view now is very light but I cannot figure out how to add numbers. There are too many of them to redraw them each time the onDraw method is called. Is there any way that I can draw these numbers on canvas and then save that canvas so it can be reused in onDraw() method?

It simply expands the column to fit the text. If I set the Width to a fixed amount on the last column, wrapping works as expected. The problem there is that if the user widens the window, the column stays at a fixed size. How can I get the column to size dynamically with the width of the grid, but still wrap the text within it?

• Can GIT, Mercurial, SVN, or other version control tools work well when project tree has binary files

  Sometimes our project tree can have binary files, such as jpg, png, doc, xls, or pdf. Can GIT, Mercurial, SVN, or other tools do a good job when only part of a binary file is changed? For example, if the spec is written in .doc and it is part of the repository, then if it is 4MB, and edited 100 times but just for 1 or 2 lines, and checked in 100 times during the year, then it is 400MB. If it is 100 different .doc and .xls files, then it is 40GB... not a size that is easy to manage. I have tried GIT and Mercurial and see that they both seem to add a big size of data even when 1 line is changed in a .doc or .pdf. Is there other way inside of GIT or Mercurial or SVN that can do the job?

  I have a growing table storing time series data, 500M entries now, and 200K new records every day. The total size is around 15GB for now. • XUbuntu 12.04 sound becomes distorted on ASUS-computers

  On my XUbuntu 12.04 Desktop from time to time audio becomes distorted, not the audio from some specific applications but every possible sounds are very noisy and barely recognizable. Then i go to: Applications Menu Multimedia PulseAudio Volume Control "Configuration"-tab and change Built-in Audio's Profile from my current profile to something else. After that audio becomes normal, until it breaks again and i have to repeat these steps. It's happening on two different computers: one is an ASUS-based Desktop and other is ASUS notebook. Maybe it's related to some common motherboard audio components. Motherboard is: ASUS P8P67 EVO REV 3.0 Netbook is: ASUS EEPC VX6 Any help will be much appreciated = )

• Technique to Display Multiple Browser Windows Tiled at Same time?

  I have a separate monitor that I use for Toodledo (a web-based task managment app), in which I like to display various views (Next Action Status, Waiting Status, Planning Status, and Overdue Due-Date items). I've been playing around with some add-ons on Firefox that allow you to split the browser, but they are cumbersome. I'm now trying Chrome, and opening 4 different browser windows that I've tiled on the screen in quadrants (I use the Compiz grid applet for this). This is not ideal as each browser replicates the URL bar and the tab, and I don't have opening ths windows automated upon restart. Chrome is great in managing screen real estate, but this is not ideal. In Firefox I tried various extension to hide interface elements, but it was very clunky... Am wondering whether anyyone has tried to do similar with TD, and how they achieved what I'm going after? Am wondering whether someone has a good technique for accomplishing what I'm looking for?

  Hide all normal windows shortcut is not working. It is currently set to Alt+Ctrl+D. And changing the shortcut doesn't help (tried Super+D, Alt+Esc). However other shortcuts work fine (even from the same Navigation tab). I guess the question is a duplicate of this which is unanswered. Update: It works exactly one time after reboot. I can minimize windows and even bring them back using the combination but only once. Also switching keyboard layout shortcut stopped working, but as I can see it's a known bug.

• netflix on ubuntu 12.04

  So I have got Ubuntu 12.04 on a system 76 lemur ultra laptop. I installed netflix via terminal with the following chain of commands: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ehoover/compholio sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install netflix-desktop when it was finished installing, I clicked the icon and something came up asking if you want to install some dependent software, but wouldn't let me interact with the window - so I hit tab and worked my way through that. But my computer shutdown before I could fully install GECKO. Now I have the netflix icon, but when i click it or right click it nothing happens. I had tried uninstalling it with the following commands, sudo apt-add --purge remove netflix-desktop and then reinstalling it but there's no change. does anyone know what I can do to get netflix to run from here? or what I can do to start troubleshooting? I searched around on AskUbuntu but couldn't find any answers to this specific problem.
