• OpenID Authentication using AuthLogic Error

  Hi, I am trying to implement openid authentication using authlogic. I have installed the open_id_authentication in the process but when I entered rake open_id_authentication:db:create --trace I get the following error (in /Users/felix/login) rake aborted! • Impossible to remove directory

  Evidently I've never had to delete a directory using win32 sdk before, because its apparently an impossible task. I've tried anything and everything - RemoveDirectory, SHFileOperation with FO_DELETE, etc. Currently I call CreateDirectory in one thread, start another thread, copy some files to this directory in the new thread, then delete all the files in the directory in the new thread, and then back in the original thread that created the directory, try to delete the now empty directory and it fails. The directory really and truly is empty when I try to delete it, but it makes no difference. The whole thread aspect is irrelevant I think because at one point everything was in one thread and it didn't work. I'm currently setting a SecurityAttributes structure on CreateDirectory to grant access to everyone, but it makes no difference. RemoveDirectory in the past has returned '32' on GetLastError, which I believe is Sharing violation. But even if I just try to delete the empty directory from the command line, it refuses saying, "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." until I shut down the entire application that created the directory. (Note: the directory is created in GetTempPath.)

• Twitter api - no more than 150 requests per hour....

  Hi. I am writing a twitter app using jtwitter - and its running inside a server inside my work. Anyway - whenever i run it from work it returns the error below and I am only making a couple requests per hour: HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request {"request":"/1/statuses/user_timeline.json?count=6&id=cicsdemo&","error":"Rate limit exceeded. Clients may not make more than 150 requests per hour."} ] 2010-06-03 18:44:49 zero.timer.TimerTask::run Thread-3 SEVERE [ CWPZA3100E: Exception during processing for timer task, "twitterTimer". Exception: java.lang.ClassCastException: winterwell.jtwitter.Twitter$Status incompatible with java.lang.String ] I run the same code from home - its fine. So obviously at some point twitter thinks our work is all coming from one direct IP - which is why its hitting a limit which it shouldnt. Do I have any choice or workaround - can i make the limit be counted from my direct machine IP - or to my account instead of IP? Can i use a proxy? Has any body else had this problem and solved it?! Before anyone asks the APP must live inside my work - it cannot run anywhere else! Cheers, Andy

• What should a self-taught programmer with no degree learn/read?

  I am a self-taught programmer and I do do not have any degrees. I started pretty young and I've got about 7 years of actual programming work experience. I believe I'm a pretty good programmer, but I admit that I have not played much with algorithms or delved into any really low-level aspects of programming such as how compilers work. I have worked with other programmers with and without degrees. Some were good and some not; having a degree didn't seem to make any difference as to which pot they fell into. Since then I've come to realize that it does depend on the school where the degree is obtained. Some people suggest that you really should get a degree; that there are things you'll learn in the process that you won't learn in the real world. Of course there is personal growth and discipline learned from completing a task of that magnitude, but let's just concentrate on the technical knowledge. What would I have been taught in a GOOD CS course that would aid me today and what can I read to fill the gap? I've heard the book "Algorithms" mentioned and I plan on reading that. What other books would you recommend? Edit: Clarification on 'actual work experience': Have worked for 2 small companies on teams with fewer than 5 people. About 2 years experience with Perl, Python, PHP, C, C++. About 5 years experience in Java, Applets, RMI, T-SQL, PL/SQL, VB6. 7 years experience in HTML, Javascript, bash, SQL. Most recently in Java designed and helped build an N-tier Java app with web frontend and RMI.

• What setting needs to be made to make .Net Automation responsive?

  Have an app that is looking for application windows being created on the desktop using class Unresponsive { private StructureChangedEventHandler m_UIAeventHandler = new StructureChangedEventHandler(OnStructureChanged); public Unresponsive() { Automation.AddStructureChangedEventHandler(AutomationElement.RootElement, TreeScope.Children, m_UIAeventHandler); } private void OnStructureChanged(object sender, StructureChangedEventArgs e) { Debug.WriteLine("Change event"); } } You can see the same issue using UISpy.exe, selecting the desktop and configuring scope for children and just the structure changed event. The problem I'm trying to resolve is that the events are not raised in a timely manner, there seems to be some grouping/delay which makes the app appear to be non responsive. If you start a new app with 1 window and wait a second you get the event, seems alright. If you start the same app several times without delay (say clicking on quickstart), it's not until all of the instances of the app get 'initialised' by the AutomationProxies that you get the notice for the first app (and in short order the other apps/windows). I've sat watching task manager as each instance of the app starts to grow as it is initialised, waiting until the last app is done and then seeing the events all come in. Similarly any time any apps are starting windows within a timeframe there seems to be some blocking. I can't see how to configure this timeframe, or get each structure changed event to be sent on as soon as it happens. Also, this process of listening for structure changed events seems to be leaking, just by listening there is a leak in native memory. (visible in UISpy and my app)

• What is the base open source java package to filter/match URLs?

  Hi, I have an high performance application which deals with URLs. For every URL it needs to retrieve the appropriate settings from a predefined pool. Every settings object is associated with a URL pattern which indicates which URLs should use these settings. The matching rules are as follows: "google.com" match pattern should match all URLs pointing to the google domain (thus, maps.google.com and www.google.com/match are matched). "*.google.com" should match all URLs pointing to a subdomain of google.com (thus, maps.google.com matches, but google.com and www.google.com don't). "maps.google.com" should match all URLs pointing to this specific subdomain. Apart from the above rules, every match rule can contain a path, which means that the path part of the URL should start with the match rule path. So: "*.google.com/maps" matches "maps.google.com/maps" but not "maps.google.com/advanced". As you can see the rules above are overlapping. In the case two rules exist which match the same URL the most specific should apply. The list above is ranked from least specific to most specific. This seems to be such a standard problem that I was hoping to use a ready made library rather than program my self. Google reveals a couple of options but without a clear way to choose between them. • Android "first time" app user tutorial

  I'm trying to create an opening tutorial that consists of four panes for my application, but since I'm new to Android, I want to make sure I'm considering all of my options before marking this task as "complete". I know of three ways, I can only really accomplish one. There are no requirements for this tutorial, but some "wanted features" would be a sliding action to each pane would be nice as well as the image and the bottom (navigation circles) not moving and the title on top not moving. One Way 4 separate activities and 4 separate layouts The red circled items are textViews that are centered horizontally and pushed off the top. The white circled items are imageViews that are centered horizontally and vertically. The purple circled are imageViews that are centered horizontally and pushed off the bottom. Second Way 4 fragments on one activity Fragments were difficult to learn, but the more I read about them/see tutorials on them, they seem to only really be used for tablets. Would it be a valid way to accomplish this? Third Way ViewPager? http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/08/horizontal-view-swiping-with-viewpager.html I've never used this before, but I know it's an option. Final Question Which way is used more often/what's the proper way to implement this? Is there any way to only have the middle part (the image) slide in, but the title (top) and the navigation images (bottom) just change once the image slides in?

• Make JFace Window blink in taskbar or get users attention?

  Hi folks I wonder someone has any idea how to solve this: In my Java Eclipse plugin there are some processes which take some time. Therefore the user might minimize the window and let the process run in the background. Now, when the process is finished, I can force the window to come to the top again, but that is a no-no in usability. I'd rather want the process to blink in the taskbar instead. Is there any way to achieve this? I had a look at the org.eclipse.jface.window but could'nt find anything like that, same goes for the SWT documentation... Another thing which came to my mind - as people are using this app on mac os x and linux as well, is there a platform independant solution, which will inform the user that the process has finished but without bringing the window to the top? Any ideas are highly welcome! Edit: I found out that on windows the user can adjust whether he would like to enable a force to foreground or not. If that option is disabled, the task will just blink in the taskbar... Here's a good read on that... If anyone maybe knows about some platform independant way of achieving this kind of behaviour, please share your knowledge with me!

The problem is that I have 72 million observations, and even after leaving the computer working overnight, it still didn't finish. I am new in R, so I imagine my code structure can be improved upon and there is a better (quicker, less computationally intensive) way to perform this same task (perhaps using apply or with, both of which I don't understand). Any suggestions?

• WCF code generation for large/complex schema (HR-XML/OAGIS) - is there an alternative?

  Hello, and thank you for reading. I am implementing a WCF Service based on a predefined specification (HR-XML 3.0). As such, I am starting with the schema, and working my way back to code. There are a number of large Schema documents (which import yet more Schema documents) related to my implementation, provided by this specification. I am able to generate code using xsd.exe, by supplying the "main" and "supporting" xsd files as arguments. But there are several issues, and I am wondering if this is the right approach. there are litterally hundreds of classes - the code file is half a meg in size duplicate classes (ex. Type, Type1 - which both represent the same type) there are classes declared as inheriting from a base class, but that base class is not generated/defined I understand that there are limitations to the types of Schema supported by svcutil.exe/xsd.exe when targeting the DataContractSerializer and even XmlSerializer. My question is two-fold: Are code generation "issues" fairly common when dealing with larger, modular xsd files? Has anyone had success with generating data contracts from OAGIS or HR-XML schema? Given the above issues, are there better approaches to this task, avoiding generating code and working with concrete objects? Does it make better sence to read and compose a SOAP message directly, while still taking advantage of the rest of the WCF framework? I understand that I am loosing the convenience of working with .NET objects, and the framekwork-provided (de)serialization; given these losses, would it still be advantageous to base my Service on WCF?   I have been intensively studying and use ef4 in my project. I do feel the improvement that it has over version 1. But I found that I have something I cannot get around easily. Here is a list I want it to be better in ef vNext. the model designer should allow multiple view of the same model, so that I don't need cram all my entity into a single view. respect user's manual edit of edmx. Currently, the some database view object simply can not be imported to the model because the designer "smartly" think that the view does not have a primary key, so that I have to manually edit the edmx to correct designer's behavior. But in the next "update from database" task, designer will revert my customization. For now, I simply fallback to manually edit the edmx file at all, or I have to use compare tool to keep the new update, and rollback and put the new update into my old edmx file manually. Designer should be improved to allow default behavior and user's manual control. I want control not to let the designer refresh the change of imported object. support user defined table function. linq is about Composability, stored proc dos not support composability. I wish I could use user defined table function which support this. What are you wishes for EF vNext?

• With a browser, how do I know which decimal separator does the client use?

  I'm developing a web application. I need to display some decimal data correctly so that it can be copied and pasted into a certain GUI application that is not under my control. The GUI application is locale sensitive and it accepts only the correct decimal separator which is set in the system. I can guess the decimal separator from Accept-Language and the guess will be correct in 95% cases, but sometimes it fails. Is there any way to do it on server side (preferably, so that I can collect statistics), or on client side? Update: The whole point of the task is doing it automatically. In fact, this webapp is a kind of online interface to a legacy GUI which helps to fill the forms correctly. The kind of users that use it mostly have no idea on what a decimal separator is. The Accept-Language solution is implemented and works, but I'd like to improve it. Update2: I need to retrive a very specific setting: decimal separator set in Control Panel / Regional and Language Options / Regional Options / Customize. I deal with four kinds of operating systems: Russian Windows with a comma as a DS (80%). English Windows with a period as a DS (15%). Russian Windows with a period as a DS to make poorly written English applications work (4%). English Windows with a comma as a DS to make poorly written Russian applications work (1%). All 100% of clients are in Russia and the legacy application deals with Russian goverment-issued forms, so asking for a country will yield 100% of Russian Federation, and GeoIP will yield 80% of Russian Federation and 20% of other, incorrect answers.

  The task is to create event handlers in runtime. I need the one method to be called with different parameter value for different events. The events and their number are only known in runtime. So I'm trying to generate dynamic methods, each of which will be assigned to some event, but in general they all just pass some value to an instance method and call it. It would be great if something similar could be done the easier way. I mean passing some value at subscribing stage and then obtaining it when the event is triggered. • Good tools for keeping the content in test/staging/live environments synchronized

  I'm looking for recommendations on automated folder synchronization tools to keep the content in our three environments synchronized automatically. Specifically, we have several applications where a user can upload content (via a File Upload page or a similar mechanism), such as images, pdf files, word documents, etc. In the past, we had the user doing this to our live server, and as a result, our test and staging servers had to be manually synchronized. Going forward, we will have them upload content to the staging server, and we would like some software to automatically copy the files off to the test and live servers EITHER on a scheduled basis OR as the files get uploaded. I was planning on writing my own component, and either set it up as a scheduled task, or use a FileSystemWatcher, but it occurred to me that this has probably already been done, and I might be better off with some sort of synchronization tool that already exists. On our web site, there are a limited number of folders that we want to keep synchronized. In these folders, it is an all or nothing - we want to make sure the folders are EXACT duplicates. This should make it fairly straightforward, and I would think that any software that can synchronize folders would be OK, except that we also would like the software to log changes. (This rules out simple BATCH files.) So I'm curious, if you have a similar environment, how did you solve the challenge of keeping everything synchronized. Are you aware of a tool that is reliable, and will meet our needs? If not, do you have a recommendation for something that will come close, or better yet, an open source solution where we can get the code and modify it as needed? (preferably .NET). Added Also, I DID google this first, but there are so many options, I am interested mostly in knowing what actually works well vs what they SAY works, which is why I'm asking here.

• ARM Assembly - Converting Endianness

  Hello people! This is currently a homework project that me and my teammate are stuck on. We haven't been given much of an introduction into Assembly, and this is supposed to be our first homework exercise. The task is to create a program that converts 0xAABBCCDD into 0xDDCCBBAA. I'm not looking for an answer, as that would defeat the purpose, but we are getting severely frustrated over the difficulty of this stupid thing. We think we have a good start in creating a viable solution, but we just cannot come up with the rest of the program. First, we mask every single tupel (aa), (bb), (cc), (dd) into a different register: LDR R0, LittleEndian // 0xAABBCCDD AND R1, R0, #0xFF000000 // 0xAA AND R2, R0, #0x00FF0000 // 0xBB AND R3, R0, #0x0000FF00 // 0xCC AND R4, R0, #0x000000FF // 0xDD Then we try to re-align them into the R0 register, but hell if we could come up with a good solution... Our best effort came from: ORR R0, R1, LSL #24 ORR R0, R2, LSL #8 ORR R0, R3, LSR #8 ORR R0, R4, LSR #24 which produced 0xBBBBCCDD for some odd reason; we really don't know. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Again, we are asking for help, but not for a solution. Cheers!

• Is there a difference between starting an application from the OS or from adb

  I do have a curious error in my application. My app crashes (don't mind the crash, I roughly know why - classloader) when I start the application from the OS directly, then kill it from the background via any Task Killer (this is one of the few ways to reproduce the crash consistently - simulating the OS freeing memory and closing the application) and try to restart it again. The thing is, if I start the application via adb shell using the following command: adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.my.packagename/myLaunchActivity I cannot reproduce the crash. So is there any difference in how Android OS calls the application as opposed to the above call? • Calling a subclass method from a superclass

  Preface: This is in the context of a Rails application. The question, however, is specific to Ruby. Let's say I have a Media object. class Media < ActiveRecord::Base end I've extended it in a few subclasses: class Image < Media def show # logic end end class Video < Media def show # logic end end From within the Media class, I want to call the implementation of show from the proper subclass. So, from Media, if self is a Video, then it would call Video's show method. If self is instead an Image, it would call Image's show method. Coming from a Java background, the first thing that popped into my head was 'create an abstract method in the superclass'. However, I've read in several places (including Stack Overflow) that abstract methods aren't the best way to deal with this in Ruby. With that in mind, I started researching typecasting and discovered that this is also a relic of Java thinking that I need to banish from my mind when dealing with Ruby. Defeated, I started coding something that looked like this: def superclass_method # logic this_media = self.type.constantize.find(self.id) this_media.show end I've been coding in Ruby/Rails for a while now, but since this was my first time trying out this behavior and existing resources didn't answer my question directly, I wanted to get feedback from more-seasoned developers on how to accomplish my task. So, how can I call a subclass's implementation of a method from the superclass in Rails? Is there a better way than what I ended up (almost) implementing?

• .NET Regex - Replace multiple characters at once without overwriting?

  I'm implementing a c# program that should automatize a Mono-alphabetic substitution cipher. The functionality i'm working on at the moment is the simplest one: The user will provide a plain text and a cipher alphabet, for example: Plain text(input): THIS IS A TEST Cipher alphabet: A - Y, H - Z, I - K, S - L, E - J, T - Q Cipher Text(output): QZKL KL QJLQ I thought of using regular expressions since I've been programming in perl for a while, but I'm encountering some problems on c#. First I would like to know if someone would have a suggestion for a regular expression that would replace all occurrence of each letter by its corresponding cipher letter (provided by user) at once and without overwriting anything. Example: In this case, user provides plaintext "TEST", and on his cipher alphabet, he wishes to have all his T's replaced with E's, E's replaced with Y and S replaced with J. My first thought was to substitute each occurrence of a letter with an individual character and then replace that character by the cipherletter corresponding to the plaintext letter provided. Using the same example word "TEST", the steps taken by the program to provide an answer would be: 1 - replace T's with (lets say) @ 2 - replace E's with # 3 - replace S's with & 4 - Replace @ with E, # with Y, & with j 5 - Output = EYJE This solution doesn't seem to work for large texts. I would like to know if anyone can think of a single regular expression that would allow me to replace each letter in a given text by its corresponding letter in a 26-letter cipher alphabet without the need of splitting the task in an intermediate step as I mentioned.   Hi there, I'm back again with my ongoing saga of Student-Project Allocation questions. Thanks to Moron (who does not match his namesake) I've got a bit of direction for an evaluation portion of my project. Going with the idea of the Assignment Problem and Hungarian Algorithm I would like to express my data in the form of a .csv file which would end up looking like this in spreadsheet form. This is based on the structure I saw here. | | Project 1 | Project 2 | Project 3 | |----------|-----------|-----------|-----------| |Student1 | | 2 | 1 | |----------|-----------|-----------|-----------| |Student2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | |----------|-----------|-----------|-----------| |Student3 | 1 | 3 | 2 | |----------|-----------|-----------|-----------| To make it less cryptic: the rows are the Students/Agents and the columns represent Projects/Task. Obviously ONE project can be assigned to ONE student. That, in short, is what my project is about. The fields represent the preference weights the students have placed upon the projects (ranging from 1 to 10). If blank, that student does not want that project and there's no chance of him/her being assigned such. Anyway, my data is stored within dictionaries. Specifically the students and projects dictionaries such that: students[student_id] = Student(student_id, student_name, alloc_proj, alloc_proj_rank, preferences) where preferences is in the form of a dictionary such that preferences[rank] = {project_id} and projects[project_id] = Project(project_id, project_name) I'm aware that sorted(students.keys()) will give me a sorted list of all the student IDs which will populate the row labels and sorted(projects.keys()) will give me the list I need to populate the column labels. Thus for each student, I'd go into their preferences dictionary and match the applicable projects to ranks. I can do that much. Where I'm failing is understanding how to create a .csv file. Any help, pointers or good tutorials will be highly appreciated.

• How To Go About Updating Old C Code

  Hello: I have been working on some 10 year old C code at my job this week, and after implementing a few changes, I went to the boss and asked if he needed anything else done. Thats when he dropped the bomb. My next task was to go through the 7000 or so lines and understand more of the code, AND, to modularize the code somewhat. I asked him how he would like the source code modularized, and he said to start putting the old C code into c++ classes. Being a good worker, I nodded my head yes, and went back to my desk, where I sit now, wondering how in the world to take this code, and "modularize" it. Its already in 20 source files, each with its own purpose and function. in addition, there are three "main" structs. each of these stuctures has 30 plus fields, many of them being other, smaller sturcts. Its a complete mess to try to understand, but almost every single function in the program is passed a pointer to one of the structs, and uses the struct heavily. Is there any clean way for me to shoehorn this into classes? I am resolved to do it if it can be done, I just have no idea how to begin.

• Retrieving and displaying a contact name from a contact id while using a SimpleCursorAdapter

  I am storing information on the phone's contacts using a sqlite database. The fields I am storing are: _id, contact_id, body where _id is the row's id, contact_id is the phone contact's id and body is just a simple text which is the actual information I am storing. I'm using a SimpleCursorAdapter to map the data to the view, like so: Cursor cursor = database.fetchInformation(); // fetch info from DB String[] from = new String[] { CONTACT_ID, BODY }; int[] to = new int[] { R.id.contact, R.id.body }; SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.row, cursor, from, to); getListView().setAdapter(adapter); What I would actually want is to get the contact name that is associated with this CONTACT_ID, and have that be shown in the view. I can't seem to find a simple solution. I've tried implementing my own SimpleCursorAdapter and rewriting setViewText(TextView, String) but it didn't work. Also, it just seems overly complicated for such a simple task. Any help? Thanks.
