How do I get a Laserjet M1212nf MFP working?

I am trying to install a multifunctional printer Laserjet M1212nf MFP on Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded and install the hplip indicated by the official web site. At the end of the installation I chose reboot the whole system and next I call hp-setup in the terminal (as normal user and then as root). After select in the dialog box my printer I got the following error: Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0) /Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/hplip/ui4/setupdialog.py", line 1255, in NextButton_clicked self.showAddPrinterPage() File "/usr/share/hplip/ui4/setupdialog.py", line 690, in showAddPrinterPage self.readwriteFaxInformation() File "/usr/share/hplip/ui4/setupdialog.py", line 1079, in readwriteFaxInformation self.fax_name_company = unicode(d.getStationName()) UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 20: ordinal not in range(128) I think at this stage the plugin should be downloaded, but it is not working. aptitude: list all previous recommended packages

sometimes when installing a package, aptitude recommends several other packages. Is there a way to show all previous recommended packages of all installed packages? Thanks in advance. Casper Edit: Thanks for the replys so far. I already tried: aptitude show ~i | grep '^Recommends' | cut -d ' ' -f 2- Thats mostly ok. But it gives also things back like: console-setup | console-data (>= 2002.12.04dbs-1) I want an easy way, to install all missing recommended packages. So aptitude install console-setup | console-data (>= 2002.12.04dbs-1) won't work ;-) Is there a way, without manual checking all entries, to do this?

I bought a motherboard that supports DDR3 RAM

I bought this ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard from http://msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=7301 But I'm not sure what DDR3 RAM to buy. I haven't built a PC from scratch in about 3 years, and I'm wondering the following Do DDR3 ram chips need to be installed in three at a time? Or can I just install one or two now and install more later without any particular pattern? If I buy 2000MHz RAM from Corsair, will that work at 1866 MHz? (which is the highest frequency the motherboard supports) Is it just me or is 1866 RAM not around? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not booting from USB or CD (SYSLINUX Message)

I am trying to install linux on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C6550-S5200. I did it once but something happened so I removed it then I had to destroy all data on hard drive so now I have nothing on it. Well I got a iso file burned to a CD and to a flash drive. With the flash drive I get. SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al With the CD it will start booting it but somewhere loading it up, the dots turn all orange and stay that way and my CD drive turns quiet. Oh and some more info the images work because I tried loading them up on another pc and it worked just fine. I manage to get the CD to boot I just had to let me pc boot up first then insert the CD and have it boot the CD then. Once I get done installing ubuntu it works fine but I have to leave the PC on 24/7 for if I turn it off the PC will freeze 5-10 seconds after booting back up no matter how I install it.

I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate over my existing Windows 7 Professional. I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and burned the install disc at the slowest speed possible (x3). I booted to the DVD, but at the second screen I am already getting an error! That screen I am choosing between "Upgrade" and "Custom". I am trying to choose "Custom" but then I get the error: Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. Error code: 0xE0000100

Can one build a single disk RAID 1 array?

I have an Nvidia hardware RAID 1 array and need to reformat. But I don't have any spare storage media, so I need to get along with the 2 disks in the array. I figured I'd do as follows: Delete the array, so I have 2 separate but identical disks, A and B, with my files Put disk B aside Reformat disk A, build RAID 1 array with it, install Windows XP Put disk B back in Boot to Windows on disk A, copy my files from disk B to disk A Add disk B to the RAID 1 array, rebuild array And now I'd have a new RAID 1 array, fresh install and all my files intact (the ones I copied). Here are the parts I'm unsure about: Can I build a RAID 1 array using just one disk, then add the other one later? Can Windows on disk A see disk B and allow me to copy my files over?

How to get a service to listen on port 80 on Windows Server 2003

I've coded a custom windows service that listens on TCP port 80 but when I try to install it on a Windows Server 2003 machine it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -o | findstr 0.0:80 it gives me the process id 4 as the culprit, but when I look at the running processes that process id points to the "System" process. What can I do to get the System process to stop listening on port 80 and get my service to listen instead? P.S. I should point out that the service runs fine if I install it on my Windows XP or Windows 7 development boxes. Also, I should specify that this has nothing to do with it being a service. I've tried starting a regular application that attempts to bind to port 80 on the Windows Server 2003 with the same outcome - it fails because another application is already bound to that port.

Restoring using SyncBack without profiles

I backed up my internal hard drive (C:) using SyncBack onto an external (USB) hard drive with maximum compression. I then performed a clean install of Windows Vista onto the computer. I forgot to copy the SyncBack logs before the clean install. And now when ever I try to restore a directory, the RAR/ZIP files are copied to the system hard drive instead of extracting their contents to the hard drive. Also, SyncBack is not traversing the folders during the Restore process. How can I tell SyncBack to expand the compressed files? I am running the freeware version of SyncBack. I have to create new log files (unless SyncBack put them somewhere on the external drive). My alternative is to write a program that traverses the folders on the external drive and extracts files from the RAR/ZIP files. I am using Windows Vista, Service Pack 2, and the data size prior to backup was about 200 GB. (The backup process took over 72 hours due to "hiccups").

Nexus 7 Possibly Bricked

I have a 1st gen Nexus 7 (32GB). I used the steps at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/Installation to successfully install Ubuntu 13.04 desktop onto the tablet. It was working fine and then I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu Touch. I booted the tablet into fast boot mode but the commands 'adb devices' and 'sudo fastboot devices' would not see the device. I am performing these steps from an Ubuntu 12.04 desktop PC. Prior to installing 13.04 the device was seen fine. I made the mistake of performing the 'Device factory reset' step from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install - Step 2. Now when I try to boot the device I get the following: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Targe filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. BusyBox v1.20.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.20.0-0ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter help for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) I have searched the web but every reference to this problem is from people who still have ADB access to the device so they can recover by flashing the tablet again. I can attach a keyboard to the USB port and access the BusyBox console but I don't know what steps to do to recover from my error. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Built-in webcam on Asus laptop missing under imaging devices in Windows 7

My built-in webcam for U43JC Asus laptop (Windows 7 32 bit) did not work, saying The camera is being used by another program. I searched on the net to solve the problem and the solution that seemed to be working was to remove usb2.0 uvc 1.3m webcam and restart the computer and the webcam will automatically re-install. However, not only did the webcam not re-install automatically, but the webcam is still not working. Things have gotten only worse that now I'm missing the webcam under Imaging Devices. I even tried recovering Windows to the factory state, however, the webcam was still missing. What can I do to restore my usb2.0 uvc 1.3m webcam?

Installer gets stuck with a grayed out forward button.

I have a CD with Ubuntu 10.10 and a laptop with Ubuntu 8.10. The laptop had all sorts of crud on it, and anything I wanted to keep was backed up on an external drive, so I was happy to do a wipe and reinstall instead of an update. So after a bit of faffing about trying to work out how to get the thing to boot from the CD drive, I did that. So the screen comes up with the choice: the options are Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. I choose to install and to overwrite my current installation. So far so good. I then get a progress bar labelled something like copying files (I forget the exact wording) and further options to fill in for my location, keyboard locale, username and password. On each of these screens there are forward and back buttons. On the last screen (password), the forward button is greyed out. Well, I think to myself, no doubt it will become active when that copying files progress bar completes. The progress bar never completes. It hangs. And the label changes from copying files to the chirpy ready when you are. The forward button remains greyed out. The back button is as unhelpful as you'd expect it to be. And there's nothing else to click. We have reached an impasse. I tried restarting the laptop, to test whether it actually was properly installed. It wasn't. I tried to run Ubuntu live from the CD, to test whether the disk was damaged. That wouldn't work either, but I suspect it's just because the laptop is old and has a slow disk drive. I'm typing this question on another computer using the Ubuntu live CD and it's working fine. So there's nothing wrong with the CD.

Ubuntu 13.10 - Black screen after login session

Yesterday, the system asked me if I wanted to upgrade to 13.10 from 13.04. Since that was the first time for me, I decided to proceed and ran the installation without worrying about it. After the system completed the upgrade, my PC was rebooted and the new version of Ubuntu signalled that the desktop would have run in low graphigs mode due to a graphical driver problem. I couldn't manage to fix the issue, so I continued with the low graphics mode... but nothing showed up. I wasn't even able to access one of the TTYs. So I ended up rebooting the system and accessing the recovery mode. I uninstalled all my ATI graphics drivers along with xorg-server and fglrx. After rebooting, I was able to access the login session of Ubuntu, but after confirming my credentials, the desktop wouldn't show up, but instead a black screen appeared with the following message: System program problem detected I couldn't figure out the problem and tried to restore/re-install all the graphics elements I knew. but nothing worked. The screen still remains black and won't show the icons nor the Unity bar. What would you advise me to do? Should I try launching a fresh install of the OS from the live CD? Thank you.

I am trying to use the Export-Mailbox cmdlet to export a mailbox to PST file but i get an error that i'm running on a 64bit machine and must use a 32 bit etc etc.. I have a Windows 7 Pro 32bit PC joined to the domain with the exchange server, and outlook 32bit installed. When i try to install Exchange 2007 32bit management console only, i'm told that i can't install the managemnet tools on a Windows 7 PC. Problem Installing Xubuntu 12.04 Audio-Video codecs

I used Crouton to install Xubuntu 12.04.4 LTS with the XFCE environment on my HP Chromebook 11. I've gotten it all fully installed and everything; the only thing I'm doing now is the basic setup things, like adding codecs and other things like LibreOffice, VLC, Firefox, Ubuntu Software Center, etc. This information I got from 2 sources: http://www.efytimes.com/e1/fullnews.asp?edid=137269 http://www.binarytides.com/better-xubuntu-14-04/ . I'm currently on the same step at both URLs, which is #6 on Link 1 and #8 on Link 2. Per the articles, which both said the same thing, I typed in sudo apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras libavcodec-extra and it didn't do anything. It just kept on saying the same thing: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package libavcodec-extra I've spend the last hour or so scouring the internet for a solution, for a hint even at what is going on. I don't want to do a clean reinstall, for two reasons: 1) it's takes like 1.5h just to get the croot fully installed, and 2) everything but this out of what I've done so far (up to #6 at Link 1 & up to #8 at Link 2) works except the audio. I've already installed flash, so YouTube works fine. It's just I can't hear any audio. Please help? Thanks in advance. I appreciate all the great help I've been getting from AskUbuntu lately. Trouble installing Ubuntu 12.04 from USB

I want to dual-boot Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 on my new ultrabook which has an Intel i7 3517U processor 6GB RAM Windows 7, 64-bit no CD/DVD drive I created my bootable USB stick using pendrivelinux.com with the "ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso". I am following these directions because they include nice screenshots; however, I do not get very far in the process. I am able to boot into the Live Desktop, and then I try to install onto my hard disk. Here are the series of actions that I take next: First, I see this ( http://i.imgur.com/vucYH ) window, and click 'continue' Then I get this ( http://imgur.com/2wESc ) window, and click 'continue' again This appears: and I get worried because it seems like there is no recognition that I have Windows installed. According to the directions I am following, I should see /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 partitions. In the drop-down menu at the bottom the only "Device for boot loader installation" is /dev/sdb and no information is shown. I am hesitant to click 'Install Now' for fear of what it might do to Windows. 4. I click 'Quit' and cancel the installation, but then about 5 seconds later this ( http://imgur.com/a/yXi0C ) window pops up (I have expanded it to full screen to scroll and show all the details). 5. Another second later this ( http://imgur.com/vxcrN ) comes up. I'm not sure how relevant this is. Does anyone have any insight into this issue?? Why does it not show my current Windows partition? Why does F. Wagner consider "NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1)" to be ambiguous?

In his article on Virtual Environments (a part of his VFSM specification method) Ferdinand Wagner describes some new ways of thinking about Boolean Algebra as a software design tool. On page 4 of this PDF article, when describing operators in his system he says this: Control statements need Boolean values. Hence, the names must be used to produce Boolean results. To achieve this we want to combine them together using Boolean operators. There is nothing wrong with usage of AND and OR operators with their Boolean meaning. For instance, we may write: DI_ON OR AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1 AND TIMER_OVER to express the control situation: digital input is on or analog input is larger than 8.1 and timer is over. We cannot use the NOT operator, because the result of the Boolean negation makes sense only for true Boolean values. The result of, for instance, NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1) would be ambiguous. If "AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1" is acceptable, why would he consider "NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1)" to be ambiguous?

I am trying to connect to the Internet via my photon+ from the past day and have tried various suggestions on the Internet and have tried to zero in to the main cause of the problem which is that my device is not detected. I have tried the following ways: 1) After connecting the device, I tried to create a mobile broadband connection via System Preferences Network Connections and selected tata photon plus. Active Directory Problem

Hello All, I have one server 2008 installed with AD, SQL and IIS. Now I am trying to attach different HDD on this server only. I am able to install windows server 2008 r2 64bit on the server, but when I try to install the ActiveDirectory on the server the setup doesn't get completed and keep processing at following level. "Configuring Active directory and local host domains ......." If I attach same HDD on any other PC Active directory setups completes successfully. My server is Xeon quad core with 8GB of RAM. Can any one help the appropriate solution for this?

nginx 502 bad gateway - fastcgi not listening? (Debian 5)

I have experience with nginx but it's always been pre-installed for me (via VPS.net pre-configured image). I really like what it does for me, and now I'm trying to install it on my own server with apt-get. This is a fairly fresh Debian 5 install. I have few extra packages installed but they're all .deb's, no manual compiling or anything crazy going on. Apache is already installed but I disabled it. I did apt-get install nginx and that worked fine. Changed the config around a bit for my needs, although the same problem I'm about to describe happens even with the default config. It took me a while to figure out that the default debian package for nginx doesn't spawn fastcgi processes automatically. But when I try to view a web page via nginx, I just get a 502 bad gateway error. After futzing around a bit, I tried telneting to 127.0.0.1 9000 (fastcgi is listening on port 9000, and nginx is configured to talk to that port), but it just immediately closes the connection. This makes me think the problem is with fastcgi, but I'm not sure what I can do to test it. It may just be closing the connection because it's not getting fed any data to process, but it closes immediately so that makes me think otherwise. So... any advice? I can't figure it out. It doesn't help that it's 1AM, but I'm going crazy here!

Centrino Wireless-N 1000 takes forever to connect and keeps asking for password

A few days ago I started having this problem. When I tried to connect to any WiFi Connection it would stay connecting forever, and after a minute or so it would ask me for the password again. The strange thing is that this happened out of nowhere, I did not install any new drivers or anything like that. After this happened I decided to uninstall ubuntu and install it again ("inside windows") but the problem is still there.
