• ping alternative to measure routing distance (on Windows)

  Hello, in order to measure aprroximately the rouitng distance (to see if a server is close to my country or too far away) I usually use ping command. I'm in Italy, when I ping Italian servers I get 36ms when I ping US EAST servers I get an average of 120ms when I ping US WEST servers I get an average of 200ms etc. Unfortunately some web hosters turn off the ping reply on their servers, so my question is how do I detect the routing distance, is there another easy to use command in Windows to accomplish the same task? Basically, I would like to restrict access to the admin area only to the local network This area's pages are prefixed by /admin Essentially, I would like all /admin/* to be forbidden from public access. Can apache handle such a case? • How to force Multiple Monitors correct resolutions for LightDM?

  I am affected by the BUG: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/874241 Otherwise, if like me you have a laptop connected to a second monitor of higher resolution, LIGHTDM at the login stage, mirrors the displays in both screens and assign to them a common resolution (1024X768) in my case, instead of extending the desktop (Primary screen with the greeter and secondary with just a logo as mentioned in the Multiple Monitors UX specifications book for 12.04). • Cannot Login To phpMyAdmin

  I'm running a simple LAMP server at home from which I host a personal blog. The server is running Arch Linux, with the latest-and-greatest versions of Apache, MySQL, and PHP. In order to easily maintain the databases, I installed phpMyAdmin. However, I cannot login. If I were to SSH into the server and run mysql -u <user> -p <password>, no errors show up and I'm immediately placed into the MySQL prompt. No problem. However, when I try to log in with phpMyAdmin, using those exact same credentials, nothing happens. No errors, no nothing, I'm just redirected back to the login page. Did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance for any and all answers!

• IRC Services with failover support?

  I run a single server (call it 'server A') IRC 'network', and thank to the generosity of some friends, I have been given a second server ('server B') that I can run an IRCd on in order to provide redundancy in case server A crashes. This is fine, I can set up a round-robin DNS with the servers linked. The problem I have is what to do about services? Does anyone know of a way to get the services to 'fail over' in case of a server failure? Eg, Server A starts off running the services, but suddenly crashes. Server B detects this and starts its own copy of the services (ideally with the same configuration and data as the services on Server B) One solution that comes it mind is to write a bot that each server runs, that sit in a channel periodically checking if the bot from the other server is in the channel. If it is, then all is well. If not, then failover. I would prefer not to have to code this myself though We are currently using Unreal IRCd and Anope services on Linux

• Where can I find design exercises to work on?

  I feel it's important to continue practicing my problem-solving skills. Writing my own mini-projects is one way, but another is to try and solve problems posted online. It's easy to find interesting programming quizzes online that require applying clever algorithms to solve - Project Euler is one well-known example. However, in a lot of real-life projects the design of the software - especially in the initial phases - has a large impact and at later stages it cannot be tweaked as easily as plain algorithms. In order to improve these skills, I'm looking for any collection of design problems. When I say "design", I mean the abstract design of a software solution - for example what modules will there be and what are the dependencies between them, how data will flow in the program, what sort of data needs to be saved in the database, etc. Design problems are those problems that are critical to solve in the early stages of any project, but their solution is a whiteboard diagram without a single line of code. Of course these sort of problems do not have a single correct solution, but I'll be especially happy with any place that also displays pros and cons of the typical solutions that might be used to approach the problem.

• Intel Rapid Start Driver Reinstallation doesn't work?

  I recently had to reformat my entire drive and reinstall Windows 7. Something that bothers me is that when I was downloading the Intel Rapid Start driver (I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y480, and it comes standard with the Rapid Start) and tried to install it, the installer claimed that my system did not meet the requirements in order to install, when it was previously installed by the OEM. My startup times have increased from 21 seconds to log-in screen to 50 seconds. Please help... • Permissions to run a SharePoint 2010 Application Pool?

  I'm currently in the process of setting up a SharePoint 2010 farm. In my Dev Environments, I have one account that is Local Admin, Farm Administrator and runs all Application Pools. For Production Environment, I would like to go with best Security Practices and run the Web Applications (At least 2: Main Portal and My Sites) with separate Domain Accounts. It's been some time that I worked with IIS, and I remember that there were issues with accessing files in c:\inetpub by non-Admin users. On the other hand, SharePoint "automagically" sets most permissions anyway. Does anyone have some experience with which permissions I need to give to the domain account at minimum in order to work?

  I am currently playing around with Mailchimp's APIs, but the documentation to me is not very clear. Here is what I actually want: Have the templates I created on Mailchimp, be visible on my own server. Assign each template I made to a specific action (logged in,subscribed, created order, or new password). This is functionality that I already tested with Mandrill, but the template exists on mandrill's account. If option 1 is not possible, can I still make my own template in my own environment, and send that template out over Mailchimp or Mandrill? Should I use Mailchimps services for this or send the email directly from my own server? According to Wikipedia; When the table is full, subsequent inserts cause older data to be purged in least recently used (LRU) order. This means new data entry is not directly saved in MySQL, but saved in Memcached instead, until limit_maxbytes is full, the least accessed data will be saved in MySQL. This means, some data is not in the MySQL but in Memcached. So, when backup, the new entry is not in the backup data What is the right way to backup?

• Windows 7 - Remote Desktop - multiple credentials

  Hi, My home network consists of a couple XP machines and a windows 7 box. One of the XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, i just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. i.e. i can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box? thanks

• phpBB - display a public message when the whole board is private

  In my installation all discussion forums/boards are private and can only be seen after a user registers and admin approves their membership. This is working. When a user first comes to the main phpBB page and they're not logged in, they can see very little except for the login and registration functions. Now I'm trying to configure phpBB to display a Read Me posting that is available to general public before registration or login. The problem is that I'd have to create a whole "public" forum and it would likely contain only one topic thread called "Read Me". The users would have to click into the public forum and then click again to get into the Topic called "Read Me". Is it possible to have a Topic thread outside of a forum? If not, is there another, better, way to achieve this? I just want to display a message, maybe a few short paragraphs to the public, explaining the purpose of the Forum and that they must register and wait for approval in order to gain additional access. I'm not seeing anything like this in the ACP. Thank-you.

  I tried to install an OpenVPN access server in Centos 6 on a linode VPS. The installation is okay for my ubuntu 11.10 distro in another VPS. The installation error occours when adding the user "openvpn" in Centos. The error message is "useradd: canot open /etc/passwd" The detail of My "/etc/passwd" file: "-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1194 Oct 9 00:33 /etc/passwd" I am not quite familiar with Centos, so how can I add the user "openvpn" in order to setup the VPN service? • How should I architect a personal schedule manager that runs 24/7?

  I've developed an ADHD management system for myself that's attempting to change multiple habits at once. I know this is counter to conventional wisdom, but I've tried the conventional for years & am now trying it my way. (just wanted to say that to try and prevent it from distracting people from the actual question) Anyway, I'd like to write something to run on a remote server that monitors me, helps me build/avoid certain habits, etc. What this amounts to is a system that: runs 24/7 may have multiple independent tasks to run at once may have tasks that require other tasks to run first lets tasks be scheduled by specific time, recurrence (ie. "run every 5 mins"), or interval (ie. "run from 2pm to 3pm") My first naive attempt at this was just a single PHP script scheduled to run every minute by cron (language was chosen in order to use a certain library, but no longer necessary). The logic behind when to run this or that portion of code got hairy pretty quick. So my question is how should I approach this from here? I'm not tied to any one language, though I'm partial to python/javascript. Thoughts: Could be done as a set of scripts that include a scheduling mechanism with one script per bit of logic...but the idea just feels wrong to me. Building it as a daemon could be helpful, but still unsure what to do about dozens of if-else statements for detecting the current time

• Average mail quota usage: tricks to implement unlimited email quota.

  I suppose that hosters who provides unlimited mail quota are only claiming it unlimited, and hope that they won't run out of disk space. Correct me if I'm wrong. In order to do such trick they will have probably to calculate the average real quota used by the average user. Let's say on a 100 GB space hosting I offer to 20 x 1GB emails, obviously if all user fill their mail my server would stop working cause they would require 200 GB, but I think I can expect this trick to work cause it will never happen (or it's extermly unprobable) that all user fills up all their mails. But the QUESTTIONS are: What's the average email usage? Can we say that a user normally fills up 1/2 or 1/3 of the quota you provide him? Thanks to any answers/suggetions you might provide.

• Why do I need a framework?

  First of all I know my question may sounds idiot but I am no "beginner". In fact I work as game developer for several years now and I know some things about code :) But as this is no related to game development I am a bit lost. I am writing a big script (something about GIS) in Python, using a lot of data stored in a database. I made a first version of my script, and now, I'd like to re-design the whole thing. I read some advice about using a framework (like Django) for database queries. But as my script only "SELECT" informations I was wondering about the real benefits to use a framework. It seems that it adds a lot of complexity and useless embedded features (useless for my specific script) for the benefits that it will bring. Am I wrong? EDIT: few spec of this "script". Its purpose is to get GIS data on an enormous database (if you ever worked with openstreetmap you know what I mean ~= 200Go) and to manipulate this data in order to produce nice map images. Queries are not numerous (select streets, select avenues, select waterways, select forests... and so on for a specific area) but query results may be more than 10.000 rows. I'd like to sell this script as a service, so yes it's meant to stay.
