• Add Source file link to the default ASP.NET Server Error page?

  Has anyone ever thought to attempt to modify the default ASP.NET Server error page to provide a link BACK to the error source in Visual Studio? Consider the following standard error page in ASP.NET: Server Error in '/myproject' Application. Invalid object name 'usp_DoSomething'. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Invalid object name 'usp_DoSomething'. Source Error: Line 4323: cmd.CommandText = "usp_DoSomething"; Line 4324: Line 4325: using (var dr = cmd.ExecuteReader()) Line 4326: { Line 4327: if (dr != null) Source File: c:\development\myproject\myproject.components\providers\sql\sqldataprovider.cs Line: 4325 When an error like this is generated, the HTML has the source back to the file the error occurs in and the line number. Has anyone ever written or thought of writing some mechanism to turn the text into a link back to the error in Visual Studio? I've never seen anything that does it, but it just seems like it would be a helluva nice feature and I think about it in the back of my mind every time an error occurs when I have to manually go find it in the source. It would just be nice to be able to click a link to take me straight there. Anyone written any, or know of any solutions for this. I use Chrome or Firefox as my browsers of choice, but I'd even consider using IE again if someone found a plugin that did this. Thanks, Max

  I see several others have posted this question, however, none of the solutions I've tried have fixed this yet. I have a 32-bit XP running VS 2008 and I am trying to encrypt my connection string in my web.config file. But I am getting the error: The configuration section '...' was not found. Failed! The command I give it: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VCAspnet_regiis.exe -pe "system.we b/AdventureWorksConnectionString2" -app "/Documents and Settings/Admin/My Docume nts/Visual Studio 2008/Projects/AddFileToSQL2" Also, how does -app map virtual directory? In other words the path above is the directory right below c:. Is this the correct path to use? And AddFileToSQL2 is the name of my project, although it is part of the AddFileToSQL solution. I have this folder web shared with all of the permissions. • Setting Icon for wpf application (VS 08)

  Hi everyone, Before going much further i'll mention I have tried solutions in following: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/320677/how-do-i-set-the-icon-for-my-application-in-visual-studio-2008 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/198848/set-application-icon-from-resources-in-vs-05 I am trying to set an icon for my application. AFAIK, I need potentially 3 images? 1 image is the actual image in explorer when clicking on the .exe (thumbnail for the exe) 1 image (tiny) in the top left corner (16 x 16? Not entirely sure) 1 image in the start menu dock, to the left of the app (maybe 32x32? again not sure) So thats fine. Now I have selected an Icon. How do I use it in one of above situations? I have tried adding it in resources, nothing seems to happen. Following that first SO solution, "First go to Resource View (from menu: View -- Other Window -- Resource View). Then in Resource View navigate through resources, if any. If there is already a resource of Icon type, added by Visual Studio, then open and edit it. Otherwise right-click and select Add Resource, and then add a new icon." The resource view is empty, and I cannot right click in this view. If I right click on the solution properties resources I can add the icon image, but it doesn't show in either of the locations listed above. (or anywhere that I can see) What am I doing wrong?

• Why does my code fail to create a directory in "C:\Program Files" under Windows 7?

  I am using Windows 7 and I have to run one program in that windows but that program working in Windows XP. This is a Visual C++ program and I am using Visual Studio 2008 for this. When I am running my application, it does not throw any errors, but it does not create a directory in "c:\program files\". So can anyone help me to create directory and exe file? • WPF ShowDialog returns immediately

  Sometimes when I call ShowDialog on an OpenFileDialog Window in WPF, the dialog closes immediately with a return value of false. I'm calling ShowDialog in response to a button click event. • XP Deploying issues due to msvcr90.dll trying to load FlsAlloc

  I have an application build with VS2008 SP1a (9.0.30729.4148) on Windows 7 x64 that does not want to start under XP. The message is The application failed to initialize properly (0x80000003). Click on OK to terminate the application.. I checked with depends.exe and found that msvcr90.dll does try to load FlsAlloc from KERNEL32.dll - and FlsAlloc is available only starting with Vista. I'm sure it is not used by the application. How to solve the issue?   I inherited a web application that makes calls to a web service. It is being developed in VS2008 SP1 and deployed to IIS6 (2k3 Server R2). Since I upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise RTM, the following line gets added to my Web.config: <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> The problem is that when I deploy this application to my web server I get the following error: The element 'transport' cannot contain child element 'extendedProtectionPolicy' because the parent element's content model is empty I can remove the line and it will work, but its a pain and I forget sometimes to remove it again (VS2008 adds seems to add it back whenever I load the solution!!). Is there anything that can be done?   Using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and a VB.NET project; I have some code which i cannot step into. The Immediate Window shows the message "Stepping over method without symbols 'Some.Namespace.Here'" How can i make sure the method always has symbols?! I need to step into every line of code. I am pressing F8 (which is "Step Into" in VS2008, from memory i think it used to be F11 in VS2005). This debugger stuff has always confused me: At the Solution level Property Pages i see a configuration dropdown with 4 values: Active (Debug), Debug, Release, All Configurations. - currently set to "Active (Debug)" At the Project level, i see a configuration dropdown with 2 values: Debug, Release. - currently set to "Debug"

• Avoiding .NET versioning hell

  So sometimes (oftentimes!) you want to target a specific .NET version (say 3.0), but then due to some .NET service packs you get into problems like: Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(Delegate, Object[]) <-- this was added in 3.0 SP2 (3.0.30618 ) System.Threading.WaitHandle.WaitOne(Int32) <-- this was added in 3.5 SP1, 3.0 SP2, 2.0 SP2 Now, these are detected by the JIT compiler, so building against .NET 3.0 in Visual Studio won't guarante it will run on .NET 3.0 only systems. Short of confirming each and every function you use, or limiting your development environment to .NET 3.0 (which sucks since you have to develop for other projects too) what's the best way to avoid against using extensions?   Hi I have a VM (Win7 32 bit) with VS2010 installed. I have a drive mapped into it from the host machine (VM 64 bit), when I have some of my VS2010 projects and to where I am building them. One of my projects is looking to load an assembly. If I copy that assembly to a local drive, the program ruins fine. If I leave it on the mapped drive, then I get an error Exception is: FileLoadException - Could not load file or assembly 'file:///Z:\BusinessTier\bin\Debug\BusinessTier.dll I am unsure whether or not I need to run Caspol. There is another post on SO which pointed me to a post which indicated that VS2008 SP1+ removed the need for caspol wrt network drives, but I wondered if I still needed to because I am in a VM. I have tried running the following on the host machine in an attempt to give permissions to VS inside the VM, but to no avail C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30128>caspol -m -ag 1.2 -url file://g:\* FullTrust where g:* is the drive being mapped into the VM (as drive z:) What am I missing (apart from understanding!) • Delete merge history in a branch in TFS

  Suppose I have a main branch and a dev branch. Suppose I merge some stuff from dev into main. I check in the merge Now I decide "whoops, the dev branch wasn't really ready for me to merge into main yet." I want to tell TFS: remove that change set from main and forget that the merge ever happened. Rolling back the changeset is easy enough -- I can use the TFS powertools ROLLBACK command. on the Main branch (with the /changeset /recursive flags) However, I will get a warning from the rollback that the merge history for the files has not been deleted. Effect: Later, when dev is ready to be merged into main, the changes in the files that were rolled back previously are NOT merged into Main (this is because TFS "thinks" that those merges are already done. My goal: When I rollback, make TFS remove the merge history so that when I merge dev into main later on, everything merges. How can I do that? BTW: I'm using TFS 2008 SP1

  So I'm using Visual C++ 6.0, and trying to compile some source code, but upon compilation I get this: Linking... LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file "Iphlpapi.lib" Error executing link.exe. I'm using the correct SDK, and the directories are correct. I've checked, double checked, and triple checked. The file is the specified directory. I can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas? Service Pack 6 SDK for Windows Server 2003 SP1 //Sounds odd, since I'm running XP SP3, but this has worked for me in the past. Like I've said, it worked in the past for me, flawlessly. I don't understand why it won't work now.

  The MVC 2.0 RTM works great on my old Vista computer with VWD 2008 Express, but I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 Pro, I installed VWD 2008 Express SP1 and MVC 2.0 RTM by using Web PI 2.0. but after installation, I found the VWD doesn't have any MVC options, that means I can't either create new MVC projects or compile existing MVC projects. Why? What other steps I need to do to make it work? I'm sure the MVC has been installed properly since my MVC site on the new computer works well (so the IIS side has no problem), just the VWD can't 'realize' that the MVC framework is already installed... (tried to uninstall and install many times, and I also tried to install MVC separately without Web PI, but it just won't work)

I have the following files referenced in the head section. jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.css jquery-1.3.2.min.js jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js Theme:smoothness UI Version: 1.7.2 for jQuery 1.3.2 I have nothing else going on in the page but still get the error 'error updating JScript Intellisense. I am using VS2008 SP1. Any ideas? TIA ps: VS shows intellisense if i refer to 1.4.1.js & 1.4.1-vsdoc.js

• C1083 : Permission denied on .sbr files

  Hello, I am using Visual Studio 2005 (with SP1) and I am getting weird errors concerning .sbr files. These files, as I read on MSDN, are intermediate files for BSCMAKE to generate a .bsc file. The errors I get are, for example (on different builds) : 11string.cpp : fatal error C1083: Impossible d'ouvrir le fichier généré(e) par le compilateur : '.\debug\String.sbr' : Permission denied 58type.cpp : fatal error C1083: Impossible d'ouvrir le fichier généré(e) par le compilateur : '.\Debug/Type.sbr' : Permission denied Translation : cannot open compiler intermediate file It seems to be consistent (I have at least 5 or 6 examples like this) with a .cpp file being compiled twice in the same project, respectively : 11String.cpp *some warnings, 2 lines* 11String.cpp 58Type.cpp *some warnings and other files compiled, a lot of lines* 58Type.cpp I already checked the .vcproj files for duplicate entries and it does not seem to be the problem. I would appreciate any help regarding this issue. Deactivating the build of .bsc files seems to be a workaround but maybe someone has better information than this. Thanks.

• Boost 1.4.0, "assert" identifier not found

  I'm trying to compile an old project that was originally written for linux on windows. It uses boost 1.4.0, and whenever I compile it throws error C3961: "assert" : identifier not found. I'm using Visual Studio 208 SP1 When I drill down into assert.hpp it includes this: # include <assert.h> // .h to support old libraries w/o <cassert> - effect is the same # define BOOST_ASSERT(expr) assert(expr) BOOST_ASSERT is actually what's failing, and VS doesn't seem to recognize assert() even though assert.h is obviously included. As far as I can tell, all the fails are in files that are part of boost, not my own code, but it throws about 1200 of them. Any ideas how to fix this?

• Choosing VS2008 .Net 3.5 and .Net 3.5SP1

  here is the problem. I have one PC using VS2008 (SP1 ) and another PC using VS2008(normal). I want my .Net projects to be editable in both these PC's. So naturally my projects use .Net 3.5 by default and not .Net 3.5 SP1. So, Is there a way I can fix my VS2008 (SP1) version to stick to .Net 3.5 and not .Net 3.5 SP1. In project properties-Application-TargetFramework I dont see an option for .Net 3.5 SP1. (Note: I know that there are solution like uninstalling SP1 or Installing SP1 on the other PC. I am asking is there any other way)

• I Clean Solution'd my Winform App and now it's broken...

  I have a Winform App that uses a 3rd Party Library of Controls, DevExpress. I also created a bunch of Controls myself, extending those controls. Everything has been working fine when all of a sudden I opened VS today and on the Design Page all my extended controls were missing. I then tried rebuilding to no avail. Then I tried Cleaning and Rebuilding and made it even worse. Now I have tons(520) of erros stating things like -- Error 179 The name 'datBirthDate' does not exist in the current context D:\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\MatrixReloaded\MatrixReloaded\Controls\Member\ucGeneral.cs 339 17 MatrixReloaded also if I try to open a form or user control in Design Mode I first get this -- could not find type, "MyType" please make sure that the assembly that contains this type is referenced and then, if I click Ignore and Continue I get this for all Forms and Contros when I try and look at them in Design Mode -- Exception of type System.OutOfMemoryException was thrown Help!?!? When I googled I came across mostly references to VS 2003...I am on 2008 sp1.

  I want to use the built-in web server for VS 2008 and have it run my web-site project as the top level root "/". When the the web-site project node is selected, right click never gives me an option to select a property-grid like that shown under step 3. Nor could I find another way in the menu or tool bar to get the property-grid. I don't know if the UI difference I'm seeing has to do with me using VS 2008 and the instructions are for VS 2005 or what? How do I get the web-site property-grid for VS 2008, or is there an alternative way to get the root setup I want?

• strange results with /fp:fast

  We have some code that looks like this: inline int calc_something(double x) { if (x > 0.0) { // do something return 1; } else { // do something else return 0; } } Unfortunately, when using the flag /fp:fast, we get calc_something(0)==1 so we are clearly taking the wrong code path. This only happens when we use the method at multiple points in our code with different parameters, so I think there is some fishy optimization going on here from the compiler (Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, SP1). Also, the above problem goes away when we change the interface to inline int calc_something(const double& x) { But I have no idea why this fixes the strange behaviour. Can anyone explane this behaviour? If I cannot understand what's going on we will have to remove the /fp:fastswitch, but this would make our application quite a bit slower.

  Hi everyone. I have a C++ native application that was built under VS2005 (sp1),On machine A. (Debug Mode) Now,I need to run this application on a "clean" computer, Clean means it has no VS installed on. When i copy the runtime folder from machine A to the "clean" machine and try to activate the application it demands to reinstall the application. obviously missing DLLs are causing this problem cause on machine A the app works just fine, Is there any "clean" solution for this kind of problem besides gessing which DLLs are missing ? maybe a smart tool or installer that indicates which DLLs are missing at the runtime ? • Different versions in manifest on different machines

  Hi guys, Have two machines, both with VS2005 SP1 installed and with the WinSXS showing the same things installed. When one machine builds a particular C++ .dll .vcproj it ends up with <assemblyIdentity type='win32' name='Microsoft.VC80.MFC' version='8.0.50727.762' processorArchitecture='x86' publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b' /> in its manifest file. But on the other machine it ends up with <assemblyIdentity type='win32' name='Microsoft.VC80.MFC' version='8.0.50608.0 processorArchitecture='x86' publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b' /> even though this machine does not have '8.0.50608.0' libraries listed in its WinSXS. The .dll built on this machine with the older version referenced has some problems. I have ensured both machines have the same latest source code and references etc.. What could be causing it to build with the different reference? Thanks! Terry

  Hey all, i have been using VB.net 2008 for a few months and i have a question. I compiled my program and ran it in a VM running windows 7. However, the progress bar looks like it does in XP. It doesn't have that cool look to it like I've seen in many other programs running in windows 7. I have downloaded the 3.5 .net framework with sp1 and also the sdk for windows 7 (1.4+ gb dvd) but i still see nothing. Is there a check-box i am missing in VS 2008 to enable these types of features? Maybe some type of code i need to place in the program? Thanks! David
