  • Choosing between YUI Charts or Google Visualization API

    Hello , I'm a bit stuck with which charting library I will use in my project. Im stuck with this two (but also open for other suggestions) For YUI Charts : Pro : - Very robust and configurable Cons : - Uses flash 9 , which might potentially be inaccessible for users without up to date flash version - Does not support export to image (for flash versions < 10 only) For Google Visualization API pros: - small file size for the libraries, - can be exported to static image charts (via separate API call) Cons - limited configuration options So there, please help me decide. YUI charts has the edge over configuration options but Google Visualization API has the edge in terms of accessibility as it uses SVG to render the grapsh instead of Flash. For users that are hand-cuffed by corporate IT prohibitions , they cant just upgrade their Flash version and the page will not work. Thanks!

  • installing windows service with SC.exe or InstallUtil.exe - there is difference but which?

    hejdig. SC.exe and InstallUtil both install/uninstall windows services. But they don't seem to work the same way. What is the difference? For instance InstallUtil fails (some file or dependency not found error) while Sc create happily installs the service. Too add to the strangeness; the service doesn't show up if I run net start in the console. But it does show up in the services GUI. Variants of this happen when I try to uninstall. I have written the service myself and earlier versions work. Dotnet3.5. /OF

    Hi I'm not sure if this is an appropriate question for StackOverflow. I have a friend show wants a simple "Brochure Ware" web site. I could make it for him but it would be better if he could manage it himself. Are there any services out there that allow a non-technical person to create and maintain a very simple site? I'm thinking just a few pages - contact, about, home with some photos and general info. He also wants to sell some stuff but I'm going to suggest he does this using EBay but the web site would be a handy reference for potential customers who want to know more about him and his services.     Thinking about service orientation, our team are involved on new application designs. We consist in a group of 4 developers and a manager (that knows something about programming and distributed systems). Each one, having own opinion on service design. It consists in a distributed system: a user interface (web app) accessing the services in a dedicated server (inside the firewall), to obtain the business logic operations. So we got 2 main approachs that I list above : Modular services Having many modules, each one consisting of a service (WCF). Example: namespaces SystemX.DebtService, SystemX.CreditService, SystemX.SimulatorService Unique service All the business logic is centralized in a unique service. Example: SystemX.OperationService. The web app calls the same service for all operations. In your opinion, whats the best? Or having another approach is better for this scenario?

Currently I am working on a project where I have to display an individual map (not a google maps view, I'd like to display the map of a building's interior) with which the user can interact(mark positions, etc.). Is there a framework or an existing app that I could use? Of course I searched the internet but could not find anything. Perhaps it is in some way possible to use the google maps API?   • Code generating SOAP Web Service Proxy objects yourself - C#/.NET 3.5/T4

    Is there a framework or code already available that will give me more control over the code that gets generated based off my web references? I'm working at a new company. And the Web Services Proxies are all self contained in their own assembly. I would really rather generate this whole project. Every time they change something on the Services-side (Java) the WSDL references have to be dropped and re-added. (I can't figure out what those guys are doing on their end that messes with the WSDL bad enough that this needs to be done so much) Their are 10 of these references. I'd rather codegen the whole thing at compile time. Every time. What are my options?

From the WebPage I need a Google like search query, for example I have Movie Title and Movie Review on the Table. I need to be able to search those 2 fields like this: "Best Movie" + Action I will need to make a query to the DB to search for the "Best Movie" string togheter plus optional ACTION word on 2 fields of the table.     I am currently developing an application which will require multiple different development languages. I want to use PHP as the final piece of the puzzle - the physical web page construction. This PHP web app will need to contact multiple web services which could be coded in anything from Java to Erlang to Python. Each of these web services will be implemented with an API. My plan is to use Thrift to allow this mix to work. Is this the correct approach or am I mixing up what the whole point of Thrift is?

    I am considering a web application that would have the same kind of multi user, automatic saving, infinite undo / replay capabilities that you see in Google Wave and Etherpad (albeit on a drastically smaller scale and userbase). Before I go away and reinvent the wheel, is this something that has already been addressed as either a piece of technology or library, or even just a design pattern. I know this isn't necessarily the best Stack Overflow question as there is probably not a "right" answer, but my Google-fu has failed me and I'd just like a reading list! Ordinarily I would be developing under python/django but this is not a firm requirement just a preference :)

I have narrowed it all down to the fact that my signature-generation code has an error of some sort; what it is I have no idea.     Im a little confused on the varying definitions and implementations of web services available as implementations. Need some clarification please. Ones I have used till now: If a vendor gives me a specific format of XML that I can send populated with data to request and I make a simple HTTP POST over the internet passing in the XML String as the payload, is this a web service call ? If so, is there a specific name to it, this kind of web service ? Because obviously, it does not use anything like Axis, WSDL or SOAP to establish this connection. A variant of this is If the vendor gives me an XSD, I use JAXB to make a java class out of it and pass in the serialized version of the object, which eventually works out to be the same as option 1. RESTful web service: Vendor gives me a URL like http://restfulservice/products and I can make HTTP Requests to the URL and depending on what HTTP verb I use, the appropropriate action is called and the response sent over the wire. Ones I have only read about\ have a vague idea about SOAP. How does this work?.. Ive read the W3Schools tutorial and I undertsand that there is a very specific form of XML that is standardized according to W3C standards that we use to pass the same kind of messages as we did in option 1. But how does this work in real life? Vendor sends me what? Do I generate classes? Do I serialize some objects and http post them over to an address? Or do the generated objects themselves have connection methods that will do them for me? What about WSDL? When does a vendor send me WSDL and what do I do with it ? I guess I can generate classes from it. If yes, then what do I do with the generated classes ? When do I need that axis jar to generate classes from something that the vendor sends ? As you can see, I have some clear and other mostly vague ideas about the different kinds of web services available. would help if someone ould clarify and\or point to more real-world resources. I've looked a little bit into Java Web Services on the internet and the numerous four letter acronyms that get thrown at me make me dizzy. Thanks

  • Possible to map a new file extension to an existing handler in ASP.NET?

    I have a scenario where my application is going to be publishing services that are consumed by both PC's and mobile devices, and I have a HTTPModule that I want to only perform work on only the mobile requests. So I thought the best way of doing this was to point the mobile requests to a different file extension and have the HTTPModule decide to process only if the request targets this new extension. I don't need a custom HTTPHandler for the new extension; I want to program the services like a normal .ASMX service, just with a different extension. First, can I do this? If so, how do I do it so that requests to my new extension are handled just like .ASMX requests? Second, is this the right approach? Am I going about separating and managing the mobile vs. PC requests the wrong way? Thanks, Dave

    On the home page of my site I use JQuery's ajax function to pull down a list of recent activity of users. The recent activity is displayed on the page, and each line of the recent activity includes a link to the user profile of the user who did the activity. Will Google actually make the ajax call to pull down this info and use it in calculating page relevancy / link juice flow? I'm hoping that it does not because the user profile pages are not very Google index worthy, and I don't want all those links to the User profile pages diluting my home page's link juice flow away from other more important links.

  • Randomly Losing Session Variables Only In Google Chrome & URL Rewriting

    Using Google Chrome, I'm seemingly losing/corrupting session data when navigating between pages (PHP 5.0.4, Apache 2.0.54). The website works perfectly fine in IE7/8, Firefox, Safari & Opera. The issue is only with Google Chrome. I narrowed down the problem. I'm using search friendly URL's, and hiding my front controller (index.php) via a .htaccess file. So the URL looks like: www.domain.com/blah/blah/ Here's the .htaccess file contents: Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on #allow cool urls RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php [L] #allow to have Url without index.php If I remove the .htaccess file, and expose the front controller in the URL: www.domain.com/index.php/blah/blah/, Chrome works perfectly fine. Any thoughts ideas? I'm thinking it's some kind of problem with how Chrome identifies what cookie to use and send to the server? This happens in Chrome 4 & 5. Thanks!

I also see the self-host (console application) examples, but it is for WCF Service (not WCF Data Service).     I have a .net 2.0 click-once application that connects to IIS web services on Windows 2003 R2 64-bits. The IIS is setup with Integrated Windows Authentication. So whenever a web service call is made to IIS web services, there is a double handshake taking place: Client Request #1 GetEmployeeList Server Response #1 <- 401 HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized WWW-Authenticate: Negotiate WWW-Authenticate: NTLM Client Request #2 REQUEST Header... Server Response #2 <- 200 Data Received Lately, however, Server Response #1 will sometimes (a good 20 percent of the calls) take a massive amount of time (like 25 to 30 seconds). How do I debug this problem? Is this a Active Directory problem or a Domain Controller problem?

  • .NET Windows Service with timer stops responding

    I have a windows service written in c#. It has a timer inside, which fires some functions on a regular basis. So the skeleton of my service: public partial class ArchiveService : ServiceBase { Timer tickTack; int interval = 10; ... protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { tickTack = new Timer(1000 * interval); tickTack.Elapsed += new ElapsedEventHandler(tickTack_Elapsed); tickTack.Start(); } protected override void OnStop() { tickTack.Stop(); } private void tickTack_Elapsed(object sender, ElapsedEventArgs e) { ... } } It works for some time (like 10-15 days) then it stops. I mean the service shows as running, but it does not do anything. I make some logging and the problem can be the timer, because after the interval it does not call the tickTack_Elapsed function. I was thinking about rewrite it without a timer, using an endless loop, which stops the processing for the amount of time I set up. This is also not an elegant solution and I think it can have some side effects regarding memory. The Timer is used from the System.Timers namespace, the environment is Windows 2003. I used this approach in two different services on different servers, but both is producing this behavior (this is why I thought that it is somehow connected to my code or the framework itself). Does somebody experienced this behavior? What can be wrong? Edit: I edited both services. One got a nice try-catch everywhere and more logging. The second got a timer-recreation on a regular basis. None of them stopped since them, so if this situation remains for another week, I will close this question. Thank you for everyone so far. Edit: I close this question because nothing happened. I mean I made some changes, but those changes are not really relevant in this matter and both services are running without any problem since then. Please mark it as "Closed for not relevant anymore".
