  I have been using Windows 7 for a while but have not had to work with a particular legacy intranet application since my upgrade. Unfortunately, this application is setup as an ASP.NET Website project hosted on a remote server. When I have the website open in Visual Studio 2008 and try to debug it I get the following compiler error: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission' failed To resolve this issue on Windows Vista machines, I would change the machine's .NET Security Configuration trust level to full for the local intranet (fix outlined here). I believe this configuration utility relied upon the mscorcfg.msc which from some cursory research appears to be apart of the .NET 2.0 SDK. I have tried to follow the instructions from this Microsoft Support article running the command below to no avail. I went to create a new project using this pattern only now the immediate window says retPlatKeys is out of scope and hovering over retPlatKeys after loading I get something like retPlatKeys|0x0000000002578900. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  I'm looking for some pointers on implementing Custom Events in VB.NET (Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5). I know that "regular" (non-custom) Events are actually Delegates, so I was thinking of using Delegates when implementing a Custom Event. On the other hand, Andrew Troelsen's "Pro VB 2008 and the .NET 3.5 Platform" book uses Collection types in all his Custom Events examples, and Microsoft's sample codes match that line of thought. So my question is: what considerations should I have when choosing one design over the other? What are the pros and cons for each design? Which of these resembles the inner-implementation of "regular" events? Below is a sample code demonstrating the two designs. • Can not call web service with basic authentication using WCF

  I've been given a web service written in Java that I'm not able to make any changes to. It requires the user authenticate with basic authentication to access any of the methods. The suggested way to interact with this service in .NET is by using Visual Studio 2005 with WSE 3.0 installed. This is an issue, since the project is already using Visual Studio 2008 (targeting .NET 2.0). I could do it in VS2005, however I do not want to tie the project to VS2005 or do it by creating an assembly in VS2005 and including that in the VS2008 solution (which basically ties the project to 2005 anyway for any future changes to the assembly). I think that either of these options would make things complicated for new developers by forcing them to install WSE 3.0 and keep the project from being able to use 2008 and features in .NET 3.5 in the future... ie, I truly believe using WCF is the way to go. I've been looking into using WCF for this, however I'm unsure how to get the WCF service to understand that it needs to send the authentication headers along with each request. I'm getting 401 errors when I attempt to do anything with the web service.   I have read these very good questions on SO about SQL stored procedures: When should you use stored procedures? and Are Stored Procedures more efficient, in general, than inline statements on modern RDBMS’s? I am a beginner on integrating .NET/SQL though I have used basic SQL functionality for more than a decade in other environments. It's time to advance with regards to organization and deployment. I am using .NET C# 3.5, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008; though this question can be regarded as language- and database- agnostic, meaning that it could easily apply to other environments that use stored procedures and a relational database. Given that I have an application with inline SQL queries, and I am interested in converting to stored procedures for organizational and performance purposes, what are your recommendations for doing so? Here are some additional questions in my mind related to this subject that may help shape the answers: Should I create the stored procedures in SQL using SQL Management Studio and simply re-create the database when it is installed for a client? Am I better off creating all of the stored procedures in my application, inside of a database initialization method? It seems logical to assume that creating stored procedures must follow the creation of tables in a new installation. My database initialization method creates new tables and inserts some default data. My plan is to create stored procedures following that step, but I am beginning to think there might be a better way to set up a database from scratch (such as in the installer of the program). Thoughts on this are appreciated. I have a variety of queries throughout the application. Some queries are incredibly simple (SELECT id FROM table) and others are extremely long and complex, performing several joins and accepting approximately 80 parameters. Should I replace all queries with stored procedures, or only those that might benefit from doing so? Finally, as this topic obviously requires some research and education, can you recommend an article, book, or tutorial that covers the nuances of using stored procedures instead of direct statements?

• ASP.NET Applications Requests/Sec suddenly jumps to a value of about 70 million/sec. on 8 core web

  We are doing performance testing of an ASP.NET web application with VSTS 2008. We start with 2000 users and slowly ramp up to 5000 users (reaches this user load at around 2.5 hours after the tests start, after this we stay at this user load). The total test duration is of about 6 hours During these runs we have found that the counter Requests/Sec (under category ASP.NET applications) suddenly spikes to a values of 36-72 millions !!!. This keeps on happening intermittently i.e we see this issue once in every 3 performance runs that we give on the same application. In our testing environment we have 4 web servers and interestingly enough we have found that this issue occurs only in the 8 core web servers. Summarizing ... Issue : The counter Requests/Sec (under category ASP.NET Applications) suddenly jumps to a value of about 70 million/sec. on 8 core web servers. This results in an increase in SQL server connections opened by the application. Response time goes for a toss. Error rates also show similar behaviour. However the counter ISAPI Extention Requests/sec does not show any abnormal increase. The graph of this counter almost overlaps with that of counter Requests/Sec till the time of the appearance of the spike.When the spike appears , this counter (ISAPI Extention Requests/sec) actually shows a drop. Test Settings : Performance test run with Visual Studio Team System 2008. Soak test run for 6 hours. Maximum user load 5000 users. This is load is attained at about 2.5 hours into the run and mainted for remaining duration.(i.e for around 3.5 more hrs) This issue is reproducible though happens intermittently. (i.e occurs one in three or four runs) Test Environment : Web site deployed on 4 Web Servers (Windows Server 2003). Of these 2 are 4 core machines and the remaining 2 are 8 core ones. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed on all 4 web servers. Application hosted on IIS 6.0 run in Worker process isolation mode.

• What do I need to do to make a WPF Browser Application (XBAP) that requires Full Trust work on Windo

  So this is a Visual Studio 2008, .NET, WPF, XBAP, Windows 7 question, regarding .NET trust policies. At work, we have several Web Browser Applications (.XBAP files) developed with Visual Studio 2008 (so .NET 3.5) that we deployed internally. These required a .NET FullTrust policy, we found a way to make a .MSI that adjusted the policy on individual stations, everything worked great. Users love in-browser apps. This was last year and on Windows XP. This year our company started upgrading users to Windows 7, and now none of our Web Browser Applications work. The error message is "Trust Not Granted", as if the policy-changing .MSI had not been run. Other details: I can confirm that our apps work on Windows XP for Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox, and do not work on Windows 7 for Internet Explorer 8 nor Firefox. I must admit that .NET security policies mystify me. Still, I could not find any mention of this problem on the Net at large or on this site. Did anybody else encounter this problem? Any and all help welcome.

• Updating Database from DataSet

  I am having trouble updating my Database from my code using a DataSet. I'm using SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Here is what I've done so far. I have created a table in SQL Server called MyTable which has two columns: id nchar(10), and name nchar(50). I have then created a datasource in my VB.net project that consists of this table using the dataset wizard and called this dataset MyDataSet. How can I add these rows / save changes in a dataset to the database? I have seen other examples that use a TableAdapter but I don't think I want to do this, I think I should be able to achieve this just using a DataSet. Am I mistaken? Help is greatly appreciated!

• Compiling Visual c++ programs from the command line and msvcr90.dll

  Hi, When I compile my Visual c++ 2008 express program from inside the IDE and redistribute it on another computer, It starts up fine without any dll dependencies that I haven't accounted for. When I compile the same program from the visual c++ 2008 command line under the start menu and redistribute it to the other computer, it looks for msvcr90.dll at start-up. • How to scrape Google SERP based on copyright year?

  Hi all: I know there must be ways to do this sort of things. I am not pro in RoR or Python, not even an expert in PHP. So my solution tends to be quite dumb: It uses a FireFox add-on called imarcos to scrape the target urls from Google SERP, and use PHP to store info into the database. At the very core of my workaround there lies a problem: How to specifically find target urls based on their copyright year? I mean, something like "copyright 1998-2006" in the footer is to be considered a target, but my search results are not 100% accurate. I used the following url to search : http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&q=inurl:.com.au+intext:copyright+1995..2007+--2008+--2009&start=0&cad=b&fp=6a8119b094529f00 It reads : search for pages that have .com.au in URL and a copyright range from 1995 to 2007 exclude the year of 2008 or 2009. Starting position is 0, of course the offset can be changed. I've already done a dummy list and honestly I am not pleased with the result. That's mostly because I cannot find a way to restrict search terms in the exact order as they are entered into the search url. copyright can appear in anywhere on page and doesn't necessarily before the years, that's the current story. Is there a more clear way to sort out this? Oh, almost forgot to say the client doesn't wanna spent too much in this - I cannot persuade him simply buy some cool software, unfortunately. I hope there is a way to use clever Google search operators or similar things to go around this issue. Many thanks in advance!

• Converting VS2008 Solution to VS2010 Creates compile errors in ASP.NET 3.5 SP1

  I am converting a large solution from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. The conversion completes without errors. When I go to build the solution one particular section of the application throws error but it didn't when the solution was 2008. Error 1 Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.DataVisualization, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. C:\MyProject\Results\Result.ascx 3 And C:\CMyProject\Results\Result.ascx(3): Build (web): Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.DataVisualization, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. The dll is in the bin and it is not in the GAC. The .refresh file is pointing to the correct location. And all sections in the Web.Config are there, if you need to see them let me know. I have gone over the fixes I found online and nothing seems to help. I would really appreciate if someone could help me or point me in the right direction? Thank You.

Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Does anyone have any idea why this error happens? Why does the web service run fine inside Visual Studio 2008, but not when running stand-alone?   Why does the DataTemplate line break the WPF designer in Visual Studio 2008? The program compiles and runs properly. The DataTemplate is applied as it should. This is how I want my report to come up. On the x-axis, there will always be three items as long as at least one of them has values. If an item does not have any values (i.e. 2010), there would not be a marker in the chart. The problem occurs only when only one item has value. Please see http://www.monteandjanicechan.com/chart_bad.jpg. As you can see, 2008 and 2010 do not have any values; y-axis is now scaled from 0 to 100. I have tried setting one of the items (ex. 2008) a value of 0 or something off the chart; it would scale according to this off-the-chart value and the 2009 value. In short, I have to have at least two items with values between 20 and 100 in order for cfchart to scale from 20 to 100. My question is, how can I correct the issue so that cfchart would ALWAYS scale from 20 to 100? I am running CF9. Thanks in advance, Monte

• MS Source Server - source stream is apparently not there when viewing with srctool

  Hi, I have been playing around with the MS Source Server stuff in the MS Debugging Tools install. At present, I am running my code/pdbs through the Subversion indexing command, which is now running as expected. It creates the stream for a given pdb file and writes it to the pdb file. However when I use that DLL and associated pdb in visual studio 2008, it says the source code cannot be retrieved. If I check the pdb against srctool is says none of the source files contained are indexed, which is very strange as the process prior ran fine. If I check the stream that was generated from the svnindex.cmd run for the pdb, srctool says all source files are indexed. Why would there be a difference? I have opened the pdb file in a text editor and I can see the original references to the source files on my machine (also under the srcsrv header name) and the new "injected" source server links to my subversion repository). Should both references still exist in the pdb? I would have expected one to be removed? Either way, visual studio 2008 will not pick up my source references so I am a bit lost as to what to try next. As far as I can tell, I have done everything I should have. Anyone have similar experiences? Many thanks.

• Browser back button restores empty fields

  I have a web page x.php (in a password protected area of my web site) which has a form and a button which uses the POST method to send the form data and opens x.php#abc. This works pretty well. However, if the users decides to navigate back in Internet Explorer 7, all the fields in the original x.php get cleared and everything must be typed in again. I cannot save the posted information in a session and I am trying to understand how I can get IE7 to behave the way I want. I've searched the web and found answers which suggest that the HTTP header should contain explicit caching information. Currently, I've tried this : session_name("FOO"); session_start(); header("Pragma: public"); header("Expires: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 23:00:00 GMT"); header("Cache-Control: public, max-age=3600, must-revalidate"); header("Last-Modified: Thu, 30 Oct 2008 17:00:00 GMT"); and variations thereof. Without success. Looking at the returned headers with a tool such as WireShark shows me that Apache is indeed honouring my headers. So my question is: what am I doing wrong?

• Running directx SDK samples on a Windows Mobile 6.1 device

  I tried to run the directx samples from ..\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CPP\win32\directx\d3dm\tutorials on a Samsung Omnia and on the emulator and it doesn't work because of a deployment error. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and have installed Windows Mobile SDK Standard and Professional refresh. The device is correctly plugged in and set up for active sync (I know this because other samples work, also a creating Win32 smart device application and running it works). When I try to run a directx sample application it compiles without errors but the message: " There were deployment errors, Continue? Yes/No" appears If I manually copy the application from the debug folder to the device and run it from there, it works. The same deployment error message appears if I try it on an emulator. Other applications are deploying successfully. Is there any way to make the deployment work? Maybe there is an obscure option I need to set... What I do is: Connect the Mobile device to the PC, Open Visual Studio 2008, Open a directx sample project, Click Run (in Debug or Release mode).
