• Windows 7 black screen after boot animation

  This is happening with my windows 7 64-bit install frequently. Today i was trying to install an icon pack. There was already a restore point prior to it so i didn't feel like create one. I replaced the following system files in both system32 and sysWOW64 imageres.dll imagesp1.dll zipfldr.dll and shell32.dll After a reboot i see windows boot animation and then a black screen (with no mouse) I let it like that for 10 minutes and the laptop automatically went to sleep mode. I wake it up and see an error box this error "interactive logon failed to initialize" I close it and i'm left with a black screen again, this time with a mouse though. I tried using automatic system repair. It just tells me to remove any extra hardware (i have none attached atm) System restore finishes successfully but doesn't fix the problem. Safe mode doesn't work either. same black screen after boot animation Can someone help me with this? Also, I'll be grateful anyone can upload those default files (listed above) for both system32 and sysWOW64 from a windows 7 64bit install (no service pack)

• VPN: Disable class based route addition for Windows XP/Vista

  Paraphrasing this SuperUser link: When you set up a VPN, the Windows default is to enable "Use default gateway on remote network." A new default route is added to the routing table pointing to the remote network's gateway, and the existing default route has its metric increased to force all Internet traffic to traverse the tunnel and use the remote network's gateway. All traffic uses the VPN, and traffic destined for the outside world is directed to the remote gateway. When the VPN drops, the route to the remote gateway is removed and the original default route is set back to the original metric. Unchecking "use default gateway on remote network" means that new default route isn't added, so Internet traffic goes out the local gateway, but a new classful route is added to the routing table, using the local adapter's IP, pointing down the VPN. Only traffic destined for the classful network of the local adapter goes down the VPN. This may not be what you want. Checking "Disable class based route addition" means that classful route isn't added to your machine when the VPN starts up, and you'll need to add the appropriate routes for networks that should be routed through the tunnel. But, the option "Disable class based route addition" is available ONLY for Windows 7. How can I do something like that for Windows XP or Vista since they don't have that option? I have searched about for that but, no solution yet.

• Windows Update broke Wirless driver - Can't get it working again

  I naively installed a driver update incoming from Windows Updates yesterday. That caused my Wifi on my Notebook (HP ELitebook 2740p) to break. The network is working as I tried it with my other mobile devices. When installing said driver, it told me that the installation failed. I tried to do a system restore, which did not help getting wifi connectivity back. The device said it was working, but did not get any wifi connection and did not discover any networks. What I tried next was to uninstall the device from my Device Manager and install either the current drivers found through windows, then I tried the same with the current drivers on the HP driver page. both of those attempts failed. It always tells me that installation failed when I uninstall and reinstall drivers. If I try to update the broken driver via internet, it tells me it is up to date, and in the device manager it still views as broken. Next, I 'played' around a bit and reinstalled drivers, and I managed to install drivers from 2012, and when trying to update drivers manually and picking drivers that match the device, it lets me choose between drivers from 2010 and 2014. 2014 would be the current one, picking the 2010 driver leads to the driver being accepted. However, no wireless network can be found. I'm pretty much out of ideas by now, short of reinstalling. The only option I can still think of was that the device broke at the exact moment I installed the new windows driver, but I find that a bit unlikely. Any help would be appreciated fixing this issue.

• Tunnell network requests with Windows 7

  I've Windows 7 64bit Pro client in a private LAN behind a Netgear wgr614v7 router. I've also a remote Debian server machine outside. I'd like to tunnel all (or specified ports/protocols) over this outside server, so when I'm on the Windows machine and I request serverfault.com it would not appear from the wgr614v7 public IP but from the server. But it's not only about HTTP traffic, it's basically about everything I'd like to: other TCP ports, even UDP, etc. It must be transparent to the application, e.g. they shouldn't be aware of this. All their requests just appear as being from the server and the tunnel between them takes care about the packets. I'm aware of e.g. Putty and forwarding individual ports or using it as a socks proxy, however not many applications to support this and the support in windows itself looks non-existent to me. I might add it should be something "reasonable" easy to set up. I've heard about PPTP but I'm unsure about it's security implications (by design). Should I go for VPN? There seem to be two common solutions for Linux (OpenSwan and StrongSwan), why would I pick the one over the other? I also fear that setting up a VPN might be quite complex, OTOH maybe it's the only sane way to do the things right? Or is OpenVPN sufficient? I'm seeking for open (source) solutions, what other options to I have or which direction should I head to?

• Windows 7 : access denied to ONE server from ONE computer

  We have a domain served by some Windows 2003 servers. We have several Windows 7 Pro clients. ONE client computer can't acces ONE member Windows 2003 server. The other computers can acces every servers. And the same computer can access other servers. With explorer, the message says the account is no activated. With the command line, the message says the account is locked. With commande line : net use X: \\server\share --> several seconds delay, then error (says the account is locked) net use X: \\server\share /USER:current_username --> okay net use X: \\server\share /USER:domain_name\current_username --> okay From the same computer, the user can access other servers. From another computer, the same user can access any server, including the one denied from the original computer. Aleady done : unjoin then join the cilent from the domain. check the logs on the server : nothing about the failed attempts (?!) Is their any user mapping I'm not aware of ?

• Debugging methods for Windows XP hangups

  I experience occasional 'freezes' on my desktop machine (Windows XP SP3). I've tried the normal debugging methods I know (watching Process Explorer, running ProcMon (hard to get a good trace because the hangups are so intermittent). Are there any additional system debugging methods that might be useful in discovering what would cause these hang ups? While this question is more about debugging methods than the actual issue itself (which is probably more of a superuser question), the symptoms of the hangup are: All windows become non-responding. Can be brought the foreground, but do not repaint. Taskbar/explorer windows are non-responsive Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Win+L, do not do anything (though the actions are queued up, and when the system unhangs, they are performed) Oddly enough, usually I can still scroll through the current page I have open in Google Chrome, but I cannot change tabs. Hangup can happen when I have tons of apps open, but also when I only have Outlook, Chrome, and MS Communicator (plus all the corporate spyware). Usually the hang lasts between 30sec and 3 minutes or so. After which I can continue working as usual.

• Custom Live CD using UCK

  I am trying to create a custom live iso that I can place onto thumb drives for the purpose of using putty to program Cisco switches and routers. I have ubuntu 14.04 LTS installed on a laptop and also installed UCK. I used the desktop image for 14.04 and created a custom ISO. I was able to run terminal and install the putty application and add a new user. I added the new user to the dialout group so they could then access the serial port. I am not exactly where I want to be yet, but it is a start. I have loaded the ISO to a USB drive using netbootin, but it will not boot into the live cd for me to test that everything works the way I need in the image. Is this because of the image I used? Any help would be great. Thank you.

• Can't add client machine to windows server 2008 domain controller

  A bit of background before I dive into the gritty details: I have a single server running Windows 2003 Server where I host my ASP.net website and SQL Server + Reports. I've been creating ordinary windows user accounts to authenticate my users, and I enabled integrated windows authentication with impersonation. I've set up a bunch of user groups which correspond to certain roles (admin, power user, normal user, etc) and I test membership to enable or disable certain features. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the solution, it was quick to setup and I don't have to worry about messing around storing passwords and whatnot. Well, what I'm trying to do now is set up a new environment with 3 servers (Web, SQL, Reports) and I'd like these three servers to share common user accounts. I understand that I could add these three machines to a domain, which means installing Active Directory on one of the machines. I am barking up the wrong tree here? Would you suggest an alternative configuration? Assuming that I stick with AD, I have a couple of questions regarding DNS. To be honest, I'd rather not fiddle around with the DNS settings because my ISP already has their own DNS server which works just fine. It would appear however that DNS and AD are intertwined. Firstly, if I am to create a new domain in called mycompany.net, do I actually need to be the registered owner of that domain name and ensure the DNS entry points to the IP address of the machine hosting AD? Secondly, for the two other machines that I am trying to add to the domain, do I need to fiddle with their DNS settings? I've tried setting the preferred DNS Server IP address to that of my newly installed AD, but no luck. At this point, I can't add the two other machines to the domain. Here are some diagnostics that I have run based on a few suggestions I read on forums (sorry they're in French, although I could translate if needed). I ran nltest, which seems to indicate that the client can discover the domain controller. When I run dcdiag, the call to DsGetDcName fails with error 1722, not really sure what that means.   I have a upgraded 13.10 from 13.04 and today this issue of anything that is mouse-like is not seen by Ubuntu. The only input device that works is my Wacom Tablet and it's pen. I already checked for updates and have the latest updates for the Ubuntu system.   When I do sudo umount /media/KINGSTON I got umount: /media/KINGSTON: device is busy. By using fuser -c /media/KINGSTON And cat /proc/<pid>/cmdline I found that the process is thunar--deamon. I closed all file manager windows. When I try to umount it by right cliking on the desktop, it also gave an error : An application is preventing the volume "KINGSTON" from being unmounted I am affraid that killing Thunar is going to impact other process running in other terminal. How can I tell it that I don't need this usb key anymore so it stop using it?

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.4 on my dell xps m2010 using wubi. Then booted up and could not connect to the Internet using 3three huawei e122 usb mobile broadband (I would like this to work also). I've managed to connect through a wireless network, I went to my favorite sites and was told I needed to install adobe flash player.This what I did players run and picture is good. But there is no sound! Then I've tried to play songs in Banshee, but no sound. I have checked everything in sound preferences including test speaker, there is sound. I have sigmatel sound card. • After installing Ubuntu using WUBI, starting Ubuntu does not get further than the GRUB prompt

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu. I put Ubuntu on a USB flash drive using the WUBI installer. I get to where it finishes the install and it wants me to reboot. But when I reboot and then select Ubuntu, I get a black screen that says GNU GRUB version 1.99-21ubuntu3 Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. for the first word. TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. Grub> When I type in some commands it says "Kernel not specified" and the rest of the commands give no feed back what so ever. What did i do wrong? Can anyone point me in the right direction. Please help this is very frustrating any help would be useful.

• Mount an image created from ddrescue

  I know this question has been asked before, but following those answers does not seem to work for me. I have created an image of a USB stick this is on my laptop harddrive. How do I mount this image? The command I used to create the image was: ddrescue --no-split /dev/sdb usb_recovered usb_recovery_log What am I supposed to do next? Mount it? Fix it then mount it? Mount it then fix it? And how? UPDATE: What I want to recover are the files in the image. How? I don't know as I have tried testdisk and it can't find partitions, and I have tried fdisk and it can't find a partition table in the image either.

• Netgear WNA1100 stopped working

  I'm facing a rather strange issue with the USB wireless adapter WNA1100. I was able to connect to wireless using this yesterday. However, today am not. lsmod shows ath9k_htc, ath9k_common, ath9k_hw, ath and ndiswrapper. I'm not sure if this is relevant to the above problem, but between yesterday and today, the only change was an upgrade to Ubuntu 2.6.38 kernel, which caused the NVIDIA driver to break (I have a 7300GT), so I had to ignore that kernel, reboot into 2.6.35, and rebuild NVIDIA module from NVIDIA-Installer-270.run. Help?
