  If you use Sleep Mode on your PC, have you ever noticed that moving your mouse will wake the computer from sleep mode? If you would prefer to only have the PC wake up when you hit a key instead, there’s a simple tweak. Just type Mouse into the start menu search box, or the Control Panel search box, and then open up the Mouse Properties panel. Find the Hardware tab, select your mouse in the list, and then click the Properties button. You’ll have to click the “Change settings” button before you can see the Power Management tab… And now, you can uncheck the box from “Allow this device to wake the computer”. • Exploring MDS Explorer by Mark Nelson

  Recently, I posted about my colleague Olivier’s MDS Explorer tool, which is a great way to get a look inside your MDS repository. I have been playing around with it a little bit, nothing much really, just some cosmetic stuff, but you might like to take a look at it. I made it format the documents nicely with proper indentation, and with line numbers and a nicer editor. It also will warn you if you are about to open a large document so that you know it has not crashed, but that you just have to be patient. And I added some icons and stuff.   I am using Ubuntu as a virtual machine in VMWare. I have used this code to write a boot loader which would write Hello world on the screen. After that I copied the boot.bin file to my usb and took it to my Windows OS. After this I burned the boot.bin file to boot.img and boot.iso files. Then I created a new virtual machine and named it booter, when it asked for the .iso file of the OS I want to run I gave it the boot.iso file, about which I told above, then I powered on that virtual machine but it gave me this error PXE-M0F: No boot filename received PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM Operating System not found Please tell me what is the main problem and how can I overcome that problem.

• snmpd agent sends duplicate traps

  I am on Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, and I cannot upgrade to a higher version. I have installed the snmpd agent (NET-SNMP version 5.4.2.1) with an apt-get install snmpd command. When an event occurs which sends a trap, two traps are sent for each such event instead of one. For example, when I shut down the agent with command /etc/init.d/snmpd stop, two shutdown traps are sent to the destination host. If I then start back up the agent with command /etc/init.d/snmpd start, then two cold start traps are sent to the destination host. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix for this, or is there a configuration change that is needed to prevent the sending of the duplicate trap? • python: os.system does not execute shell comand

  I need to execute shell command in python program (I have ubuntu). More specifically I want to create graph using graphviz in python script. My code is os.system("dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png") It does not work, but if I just type dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png in command line then everything is fine. Do you know what the problem? Thank you! Edit: Does not work means that nothing happens, there are no errors. • pdflatex reads .eps files saved in OS/X, but not in Ubuntu

  Sorry if this is a stupid question; I'm a newbie. I am preparing a manuscript in LaTeX. The journal (Physical Biology, an IOP publication) requires that figures be saved in .eps format, so I am trying to do that. However, I cannot get my LaTeX file to build when I have generated the .eps files on my Ubuntu computer. If I save the images on my Mac, the file build just fine. So far, I have tried saving images in ImageJ, FIJI and Inkscape. The same problem occurs in all three. When using kile, I get the following error: /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/oberdiek/epstopdf-base.sty:0: Shell escape feature is not enabled. In TexWorks, the error is different, but still there: Package pdftex.def Error: File `./figures4/figure4a-eps-converted-to.pdf' not found. Now, if I fire up Inkscape, FIJI or ImageJ on OS/X, everything works fine. The Mac also can't build with the Ubuntu-saved images. The images generated on the Ubuntu machine open fine using Document Viewer. I am building the same LaTeX file on both computers, with the exact same results. The header of my LaTeX file is: \documentclass[12pt]{iopart} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{epstopdf} \usepackage{parskip} \usepackage{color} \usepackage{iopams} And then the code for the figure is: \begin{figure} \center{\includegraphics[width=4in] {./figures4/figure4a.eps}} \footnotesize{\caption{ \label{fig:4a} (4a) lorem ipsum dolor sic amet.}} \end{figure} I'd be happy to send an example of both .eps files. • How to Export Flash Animation Data

  I'd love for my partner, the artist, to be able to animate using flash movieclips and timelines. Then I, the programmer, would like to read the raw Flash info and re-program it into my engine of choice (which happens to be Torque2D). The data I'd want is the bitmap images that were used in Flash, like the head and body the links between the images, like where the head connects to the body the motion data from the flash animation, like move, rotate (at what speed), shear, etc. for the head or arms or whatever. Is there any way to get this data? Here's what I know so far. There are tools like SWFSheet and Spriteloq that convert the entire flash animation into a frame by frame sprite animation (in a sprite sheet). This would take too much space in my case, so I'd like to avoid that. Re-animating on the fly would take much less texture memory. There is a PDF that describes the SWF file format but NOT the individual components like the movieclips. So anyone know of a library I can use, or how I can learn more about the movieclip components and whatnot? (more better tags: transform, export, convert)

  The online travel booking leader Expedia announced that it started accepting Bitcoins for booking hotels on its website. For those who are new to Bitcoin, it is a digital currency in which transactions can be performed without the need for a central bank – its more like internet of currency. At the moment Expedia is accepting Bitcoin payments only for hotel bookings and in the future it may allow flights and vacation packages bookings. When Expedia customers wants to pay for a hotel using Bitcoin then they are transferred to Coinbase, a third party bit coin processor, for accepting the payments and then they are redirected back to Expedia.com to complete booking. This simple process would definitely drive mainstream adoption of Bitcoin – a win-win situation for digital currency users as well as for the travel company as they save a lot on card processing fees. Online retailers pay around 3% of transaction amount as fees for credit card processing companies like Visa & Master when they accept cards, but Coinbase charges a fee of just 1 percent for processing Bitcoins. • Issuse with multiple student result printing request

  I'm not really sure about how to ask this question but i'll try my best to make it clear enough. I have a Student Result Application where by students result are managed, over several academic sessions, all having two semesters each. During each semester students take different courses and have results based on the semester. The application is done now and i'm using a PDF Libaray to crop the final result page to hand over to the students each semester. If a student request a particular semester result it's a straight forward issue and there are no complications when it comes to printing out the result. My issue is this: in a case where a student requests to have a combination of semesters...say 3rd year rain semester , 4th year rain semester and 5th year hamattarn semester. Please how can i handle this issue? Does the user picks these options at the user interface level or there's a special way to handle issues like this? Also, if i'm to display these multiple student result how could this be be done, knowing fully well that i'll have to print the different result seperately.   Thanks to all of the guest speakers on our Sun2Oracle webcast: Steve from Hub City Media, Albert from UCLA and our own Scott Bonell. During the webcast, we tried to answer as many questions as we could, but there were a few that we needed a bit more time to answer.  Albert from UCLA sent me the following information: Alternate Directory EvaluationWe were happy with Sun DSEE. OUD, based on the research we had done, was a logical continuation of DSEE.  If we moved away, it was to to go open source. UCLA evaluated OpenLDAP, OpenDS, Red Hat's 389 Directory. We also briefly entertained Active Directory. Ultimately, we decided to stay with OUD for the Enterprise Directory, and adopt OpenLDAP for the non-critical edge directories.HardwareFor Enterprise Directory, UCLA runs 3 Dell PowerEdge R710 servers. Each server has 12GB RAM and 2 2.4GHz Intel Xeon E5 645 processors. We run 2 of those servers at UCLA's Data Center in a semi active-passive configuration. The 3rd server is located at UCLA Berkeley. All three are multi master replicated. At run time, the bulk of LDAP query requests go to 1 server. Essentially, all of our authn/authz traffic is being handled by 1 server, with the other 2 acting as redundant back ups.

• Fraud Detection with the SQL Server Suite Part 1

  While working on different fraud detection projects, I developed my own approach to the solution for this problem. In my PASS Summit 2013 session I am introducing this approach. I also wrote a whitepaper on the same topic, which was generously reviewed by my friend Matija Lah. In order to spread this knowledge faster, I am starting a series of blog posts which will at the end make the whole whitepaper. Abstract With the massive usage of credit cards and web applications for banking and payment processing, the number of fraudulent transactions is growing rapidly and on a global scale. Several fraud detection algorithms are available within a variety of different products. In this paper, we focus on using the Microsoft SQL Server suite for this purpose. In addition, we will explain our original approach to solving the problem by introducing a continuous learning procedure. Our preferred type of service is mentoring; it allows us to perform the work and consulting together with transferring the knowledge onto the customer, thus making it possible for a customer to continue to learn independently. This paper is based on practical experience with different projects covering online banking and credit card usage. Introduction A fraud is a criminal or deceptive activity with the intention of achieving financial or some other gain. Fraud can appear in multiple business areas. (2011), Detecting Credit Card Fraud by Decision Trees and Support Vector Machines, Proceedings of the International MultiConference of Engineers and Computer Scientists 2011 Vol 1. Hong Kong: IMECS. Dealing with frauds includes fraud prevention and fraud detection. Fraud prevention is a proactive mechanism, which tries to disable frauds by using previous knowledge. Fraud detection is a reactive mechanism with the goal of detecting suspicious behavior when a fraudster surpasses the fraud prevention mechanism. A fraud detection mechanism checks every transaction and assigns a weight in terms of probability between 0 and 1 that represents a score for evaluating whether a transaction is fraudulent or not. A fraud detection mechanism cannot detect frauds with a probability of 100%; therefore, manual transaction checking must also be available. With fraud detection, this manual part can focus on the most suspicious transactions. This way, an unchanged number of supervisors can detect significantly more frauds than could be achieved with traditional methods of selecting which transactions to check, for example with random sampling. There are two principal data mining techniques available both in general data mining as well as in specific fraud detection techniques: supervised or directed and unsupervised or undirected. Supervised techniques or data mining models use previous knowledge. Typically, existing transactions are marked with a flag denoting whether a particular transaction is fraudulent or not. Customers at some point in time do report frauds, and the transactional system should be capable of accepting such a flag. Supervised data mining algorithms try to explain the value of this flag by using different input variables. When the patterns and rules that lead to frauds are learned through the model training process, they can be used for prediction of the fraud flag on new incoming transactions. Unsupervised techniques analyze data without prior knowledge, without the fraud flag; they try to find transactions which do not resemble other transactions, i.e. outliers. In both cases, there should be more frauds in the data set selected for checking by using the data mining knowledge compared to selecting the data set with simpler methods; this is known as the lift of a model. Typically, we compare the lift with random sampling. The supervised methods typically give a much better lift than the unsupervised ones. However, we must use the unsupervised ones when we do not have any previous knowledge. Furthermore, unsupervised methods are useful for controlling whether the supervised models are still efficient. Accuracy of the predictions drops over time. Patterns of credit card usage, for example, change over time. In addition, fraudsters continuously learn as well. Therefore, it is important to check the efficiency of the predictive models with the undirected ones. When the difference between the lift of the supervised models and the lift of the unsupervised models drops, it is time to refine the supervised models. However, the unsupervised models can become obsolete as well. It is also important to measure the overall efficiency of both, supervised and unsupervised models, over time. We can compare the number of predicted frauds with the total number of frauds that include predicted and reported occurrences. For measuring behavior across time, specific analytical databases called data warehouses (DW) and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) systems can be employed. By controlling the supervised models with unsupervised ones and by using an OLAP system or DW reports to control both, a continuous learning infrastructure can be established. There are many difficulties in developing a fraud detection system. As has already been mentioned, fraudsters continuously learn, and the patterns change. The exchange of experiences and ideas can be very limited due to privacy concerns. In addition, both data sets and results might be censored, as the companies generally do not want to publically expose actual fraudulent behaviors. Therefore it can be quite difficult if not impossible to cross-evaluate the models using data from different companies and different business areas. This fact stresses the importance of continuous learning even more. Finally, the number of frauds in the total number of transactions is small, typically much less than 1% of transactions is fraudulent. Some predictive data mining algorithms do not give good results when the target state is represented with a very low frequency. Data preparation techniques like oversampling and undersampling can help overcome the shortcomings of many algorithms. SQL Server suite includes all of the software required to create, deploy any maintain a fraud detection infrastructure. The Database Engine is the relational database management system (RDBMS), which supports all activity needed for data preparation and for data warehouses. SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) supports OLAP and data mining (in version 2012, you need to install SSAS in multidimensional and data mining mode; this was the only mode in previous versions of SSAS, while SSAS 2012 also supports the tabular mode, which does not include data mining). Additional products from the suite can be useful as well. SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) is a tool for developing extract transform–load (ETL) applications. SSIS is typically used for loading a DW, and in addition, it can use SSAS data mining models for building intelligent data flows. SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is useful for presenting the results in a variety of reports. Data Quality Services (DQS) mitigate the occasional data cleansing process by maintaining a knowledge base. Master Data Services is an application that helps companies maintaining a central, authoritative source of their master data, i.e. the most important data to any organization. It brings OLAP functionalities directly into Excel, making it possible for an advanced analyst to build a complete learning infrastructure using a familiar tool. • Ralink RT3060 wireless device configuration on ubuntu 12.04

  concerning How do I get a Ralink RT3060 wireless card working? I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with a 'LWPX07 Edimax EW-7711In 150M 1T1R WL PCI Card' which has a rt3060 chip. Out of the box the card is recognized as rt2800sta. I tried solution one, that didn't work. Still the card connects to the wireless network, but it seems to slow to load any pages.   Desktop notifications from Chromium-based browsers are an awesome feature, but they do not blend in well at all with the native system theming in Ubuntu. Now you can fix that small problem using the wonderful Chromify-OSD extension created by Marco Ceppi. Once you get the extension installed you can give it a quick test run using the link and information we have listed below. If used in combination with the ADF security expression language and security checks performed in Java, this protection already provides you with fine grained access control that can also be used to secure UI components like buttons and input text field. Similar, using Java, developers can use code like shown below to verify the user authentication status: ADFContext adfContext = ADFContext.getCurrent(); SecurityContext securityCtx = adfContext.getSecurityContext(); boolean userAuthenticated = securityCtx.isAuthenticated(); Note that the Java code lines use the same security context reference that is used with expression language. But is this all that there is? No ! The goal of ADF Security is to enable all ADF developers to build secure web application with JAAS (Java Authentication and Authorization Service). For this, more fine grained protection can be defined using the ResourcePermission, a generic JAAS permission class owned by the Oracle Platform Security Services (OPSS).  Using the ResourcePermission  class, developers can grant permission to functional parts of an application that are not protected by page or task flow security. For example, an application menu allows creating and canceling product shipments to customers. However, only a specific user group - or application role, which is the better way to use ADF Security - is allowed to cancel a shipment. To enforce this rule, a permission is needed that can be used declaratively on the UI to hide a menu entry and programmatically in Java to check the user permission before the action is performed. Note that multiple lines of defense are what you should implement in your application development. Don't just rely on UI protection through hidden or disabled command options. To create menu protection permission for an ADF Security enable application, you choose Application | Secure | Resource Grants from the Oracle JDeveloper menu. The opened editor shows a visual representation of the jazn-data.xml file that is used at design time to define security policies and user identities for testing. An option in the Resource Grants section is to create a new Resource Type. A list of pre-defined types exists for you to create policy definitions for. Many of these pre-defined types use the ResourcePermission class. To create a custom Resource Type, for example to protect application menu functions, you click the green plus icon next to the Resource Type select list. The Create Resource Type editor that opens allows you to add a name for the resource type, a display name that is shown when granting resource permissions and a description. The ResourcePermission class name is already set. In the menu protection sample, you add the following information: Name: MenuProtection Display Name: Menu Protection Description: Permission to grant menu item permissions OK the dialog to close the resource permission creation. To create a resource policy that can be used to check user permissions at runtime, click the green plus icon in the Resources section of the Resource Grants section. In the Create Resource dialog, provide a name for the menu option you want to protect. To protect the cancel shipment menu option, create a resource with the following settings Resource Type: Menu Protection Name: Cancel Shipment Display Name: Cancel Shipment Description: Grant allows user to cancel customer good shipment   A new resource Cancel Shipmentis added to the Resources panel. Initially the resource is not granted to any user, enterprise or application role. To grant the resource, click the green plus icon in the Granted To section, select the Add Application Role option and choose one or more application roles in the opened dialog. Finally, you click the process action to define the policy. Note that permission can have multiple actions that you can grant individually to users and roles. The cancel shipment permission for example could have another action "view" defined to determine which user should see that this option exist and which users don't. To use the cancel shipment permission, select the disabled property on a command item, like af:commandMenuItem and click the arrow icon on the right. From the context menu, choose the Expression Builder entry. Expand the ADF Bindings | securityContext node and click the userGrantedResource option. Hint: You can expand the Description panel below the EL selection panel to see an example of how the grant should look like. The EL that is created needs to be manually edited to show as #{!securityContext.userGrantedResource[               'resourceName=Cancel Shipment;resourceType=MenuProtection;action=process']} OK the dialog so the permission checking EL is added as a value to the disabled property. Running the application and expanding the Shipment menu shows the Cancel Shipments menu item disabled for all users that don't have the custom menu protection resource permission granted. Note: Following the steps listed above, you create a JAAS permission and declaratively configure it for function security in an ADF application. Do you need to understand JAAS for this? No!  This is one of the benefits that you gain from using the ADF development framework. To implement multi lines of defense for your application, the action performed when clicking the enabled "Cancel Shipments" option should also check if the authenticated user is allowed to use process it.
