• What is controlling the desktop display?

  I have two Ubuntu systems and in the course of changing configurations something has become muddled. I have disabled Unity in favor of gnome shell, the older style display of the desktop. Then I installed xfce 4. Seemed everything would be working okay, and for the most part it does. Except I noticed that on one system there's something else controlling settings. On one, if I right click the desktop, I get the menu with the options: open in new window create launcher... create url link... create folder... create from template -> open terminal here paste desktop settings... properties... applications -> On system two, right clicking brings up the menu: Create new folder Create new document -> organize desktop by name keep aligned paste Change Desktop Background Additionally, even though I set the background with the xfce settings manager, on system two that background will appear for a few seconds before it's replaced by something that looks like a background from Ubuntu's original desktop. And it's being controlled by what comes up with the "change desktop background" when right clicking, which isn't the xfce settings manager. On the first system, that right click does bring up the xfce settings tool. In short, something is controlling/overriding the xfce settings on machine two, but I can't find what file or configuration tool is doing it. How can I get system two to behave as system one, giving control of settings and configuration of X to XFCE's tools?

  For those who use AjaxToolKit controls presenting a language-dependent data (the CalendarExternder with the names of the months and weeks, for example) you can change the language to be presented in a simple way. • C# with keyword equivalent

  There’s no with keyword in C#, like Visual Basic. So you end up writing code like this: this.StatusProgressBar.IsIndeterminate = false; this.StatusProgressBar.Visibility = Visibility.Visible; this.StatusProgressBar.Minimum = 0; this.StatusProgressBar.Maximum = 100; this.StatusProgressBar.Value = percentage; Here’s a work around to this: With.A<ProgressBar>(this.StatusProgressBar, (p) => { p.IsIndeterminate = false; p.Visibility = Visibility.Visible; p.Minimum = 0; p.Maximum = 100; p.Value = percentage; }); Saves you repeatedly typing the same class instance or control name over and over again. It also makes code more readable since it clearly says that you are working with a progress bar control within the block. It you are setting properties of several controls one after another, it’s easier to read such code this way since you will have dedicated block for each control. It’s a very simple one line function that does it: public static class With { public static void A<T>(T item, Action<T> work) { work(item); } } You could argue that you can just do this: var p = this.StatusProgressBar; p.IsIndeterminate = false; p.Visibility = Visibility.Visible; p.Minimum = 0; p.Maximum = 100; p.Value = percentage; But it’s not elegant. You are introducing a variable “p” in the local scope of the whole function. This goes against naming conventions. Morever, you can’t limit the scope of “p” within a certain place in the function.

• SQL SERVER – Changing Default Installation Path for SQL Server

  Earlier I wrote a blog post about SQL SERVER – Move Database Files MDF and LDF to Another Location and in the blog post we discussed how we can change the location of the MDF and LDF files after database is already created. I had mentioned that we will discuss how to change the default location of the database. This way we do not have to change the location of the database after it is created at different locations. The ideal scenario would be to specify this default location of the database files when SQL Server Installation was performed. If you have already installed SQL Server there is an easy way to solve this problem. This will not impact any database created before the change, it will only affect the default location of the database created after the change. To change the default location of the SQL Server Installation follow the steps mentioned below: Go to Right Click on Servers >> Click on Properties >> Go to the Database Settings screen You can change the default location of the database files. All the future database created after the setting is changed will go to this new location. You can also do the same with T-SQL and here is the T-SQL code to do the same. • BizTalk: mapping with Xslt

  BizTalk Map Editor (Mapper) is a good editor, especially in the last 2010 version of the BizTalk. But still sometimes it cannot do the tasks easily. It is time for the Xslt code, It is time to remember that the maps are executed by the Xslt engine.  Right-click the Mapper Grid (a field between the source and target schemas) and choose Properties /Custom XSLT Path.  Input here a name of the file with Xslt code. Only this code will be executed, forget the picture in the Mapper, all those links and functoids.  Let’s see the real-life example. There are two source Addresses. One is on the top level and the second is inside the Member_Address record with MaxOccurs=* . The target address is placed inside the Locator record with MaxOccurs=*. The requirement is to map all source address to the one target address structure. The source Xml document looks like: The result Xml should be like this: Try to do this mapping with the Mapper and you will spent good amount of time and the result map would be tricky. If we use the Xslt code, the mapping will be simple and unambiguous, like this: Simple, elegant.

• Business Objects - Containers or functional?

  This is a question I asked a while back on SO, but it may get discussed better here... Where I work, we've gone back and forth on this subject a number of times and are looking for a sanity check. Here's the question: Should Business Objects be data containers (more like DTOs) or should they also contain logic that can perform some functionality on that object. Example - Take a customer object, it probably contains some common properties (Name, Id, etc), should that customer object also include functions (Save, Calc, etc.)? One line of reasoning says separate the object from the functionality (single responsibility principal) and put the functionality in a Business Logic layer or object. The other line of reasoning says, no, if I have a customer object I just want to call Customer.Save and be done with it. Why do I need to know about another class to save a customer if I'm consuming the object? Our last two projects have had the objects separated from the functionality, but the debate has been raised again on a new project. Which makes more sense and why??

• Changing the BizTalk message output file name

  By default, BizTalk creates the filename of the message dropped to a send port as %MessageID%, which is the unique identifier (GUID) of the message. What if you want to create your own filename? To start, create a simple schema, and a basic orchestration that will receive the message and send it right back out, like this: If you deploy this and wire up the ports, you can drop an xml file into your receive port and have it come out at your send port named something like {7A63CAF8-317B-49D5-871F-9FD57910C3A0}.xml. Now, we'll create a new message with a custom filename. First, create a new orchestration variable called NewFileName, of the type System.String. Next, create a second message using the same schema as the message you're receiving in the Receive shape. Now, drag a Construct Message shape to the orchestration. In the shape's properties, set Messages Constructed to be the new message you just created. Double click the Message Assignment shape (inside the Construct shape...) and paste in the following code: Message_2 = Message_1;   NewFileName = Message_1(FILE.ReceivedFileName); NewFileName = NewFileName.Replace(".xml","_"); NewFileName = NewFileName + "output_" + System.DateTime.Now.Year.ToString() + "-" + System.DateTime.Now.Month.ToString();   Message_2(FILE.ReceivedFileName) = NewFileName; Here we make a copy of the received message, get it's original file name (ReceivedFileName), replace its extension with an underscore, and date-stamp it. Finally, add a Send shape and a Port to the surface, and configure them to send the message you just created. You should wind up with an orchestration like this: Deploy it, and create a new send port. It should be just about identical to the first send port, except this time the file name will be "%SourceFileName%.xml" (without the quotes of course). Fire up the application, drop in a test file, and you should now get both the xml file named with a GUID, and a second file named something along the lines of "MySchemaTestFile_output_2011-6.xml".

• External microphone not working

  gnome-volume-control does not recognise external hardware. My headphones work nonetheless, but an external microphone does not. External microphones used to work, but at times were temperamental - I would have to login or logout with or without microphone plugged in. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) on an mSi U100 wind notebook with one Intel soundcard and trying to use a jack microphone which has worked previously. USB microphones have also been problematic. I have done the basics: Installed upgrades. Checked nothing is muted. Looked for the device on gnome-volume-control. Tried using a different microphone that works on a friends computer. Tested my microphone works when using a different computer. Checked my soundcard can be seen (cat /proc/asound/cards). I have done more complicated things: I have tried playing around with settings in alsamixer. Nothing is muted. I can adjust "mic" and "internal mic" regardless of whether an external microphone is plugged in. I have the choice of input source from "mic", "front mic", "line" and "CD". I've played around changing this and it hasn't helped. I only have one CAPTURE option. In gnome-sound-recorder I have the choice of line, microphone 1 and microphone 2. I have played around changing this option. None of these pick up sound from the external microphone. Microphone 2 is the microphone on my laptop which is bad quality. In gnome-sound-recorder I have the choice of different profiles, and changing this has not helped either. I have looked at gstreamer-properties but none of that seemed helpful. I don't know if there a way to check if these external devices are being picked up. I would like to make an external microphone work. Please help!

• SOLID Thoughts

  SOLID came up again in discussion.  What is SOLID?  Well, glad you asked, because I am going to elaborate on the SOLID Principles a bit. Initial Concept S Single Responsibility Principle O Open/Closed Principle L Liskov Substitution Principle I Interface Segregation Principle D Dependency Inversion/Injection Principle The Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) is stated that every object should have a single responsibility and should be entirely encapsulated by the class.  This helps keep cohesion.  Here is a short example, starting with a basic class. public class Car { decimal Gas; int Doors; int Speed; decimal RampJumpSpeed; } Now I will refactor a little bit to make it a bit more SRP friendly. public class Car { decimal Gas; int Speed; }   public class DuneBuggy : Car { decimal RampJumpSpeed; }   public class EconomyCar : Car { int Doors; } What we end up with, instead of one class, is an abstract class and two classes that have their respective methods or properties to keep the responsibilities were they need to be. The Open Closed Principle (OCP) is one of my favorites, which states simply, that you should be able to extend a classes behavior without modifying it.  There are a couple of ways one can extend a class, by inheritance, composition, or by proxy implementation.  The Liskov Substitution Principle (LSP) states that a derived class must be substitutable for their base classes. The Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP) states that one should depend on abstractions and not on concrete implementations. Finally, the Interface Segregation Principle (ISP) states that fine grain interfaces should be client specific. So hope that helps with kicking off a basic understanding of SOLID Principles.  I will be following this entry up with some new bits in the near future related to good software design and practice. • When too much encapsulation was reached

  Recently, I read a lot of gook articles about how to do a good encapsulation. And when I say "good encapsulation", I don't talk about hiding private fields with public properties; I talk about preventing users of your Api to do wrong things. Here is two good articles about this subject: http://blog.ploeh.dk/2011/05/24/PokayokeDesignFromSmellToFragrance.aspx http://lostechies.com/derickbailey/2011/03/28/encapsulation-youre-doing-it-wrong/ At my job, the majority a our applications are not destined to other programmers but rather to the customers. About 80% of the application code is at the top of the structure (Not used by other code). For this reason, there is probably no chance ever that this code will be used by other application. An example of encapsulation that prevent user to do wrong thing with your Api is to return an IEnumerable instead of IList when you don't want to give the ability to the user to add or remove items in the list. My question is: When encapsulation could be considered like too much of purism object oriented programming while keeping in mind that each hour of programming is charged to the customer? I want to do good code that is maintainable, easy to read and to use but when this is not a public Api (Used by other programmer), where could we put the line between perfect code and not so perfect code?   The SaaS is for real estate companies, and they can pay a monthly fee that will offer them 1000 publications but they can also consume additional publications or other services that will appear on their bill as extras. On registration the user can choose one of the 5 available plans that the only difference will be the quantity of publications their plan allows them to make. But they can pass that limit if they wish, and additional payment will be required on the next bill. A publication means: Publishing a property during one day, for 1 whole month would be: 30 publications. And 5 properties during one day would be 5 publications. So basically the user can: Make publications (already paid in the monthly fee, extra payment only if it passes the limit) Highlight that publication (extra payment) Publish on other websites or printed catalogues (extra payment) Doubts: How to handle modifications in pricing plans? Let's say quantities change, or you want to offer some free stuff. How to handle unpaid invoices? I mean, freeze the service until the payment has been done and then resume it. When to make the invoices? The idea is to make one invoice for the monthly fee and a second invoice for the extra services that were consumed. What payment methods to use? The choosen now is by bank account, and mobile phone validation with a SMS. If user doesn't pay we call that phone and ask for payment. Any examples on billing online services will be welcome! • Fixing Chrome&rsquo;s AJAX Request Caching Bug

  I recently had to make a set of web pages restore their state when the user arrived on them after clicking the browser’s back button. The pages in question had various content loaded in response to user actions, which meant I had to manually get them back into a valid state after the page loaded. I got hold of the page’s data in a JavaScript ViewModel using a JQuery ajax call, then iterated over the properties, filling in the fields as I went. I built in the ability to describe dependencies between inputs to make sure fields were filled in in the correct order and at the correct time, and that all worked nicely. To make sure the browser didn’t cache the AJAX call results I used the JQuery’s cache: false option, and ASP.NET MVC’s OutputCache attribute for good measure. That all worked perfectly… except in Chrome. Chrome insisted on retrieving the data from its cache. cache: false adds a random query string parameter to make the browser think it’s a unique request – it made no difference. I made the AJAX call a POST – it made no difference. Eventually what I had to do was add a random token to the URL (not the query string) and use MVC routing to deliver the request to the correct action. • Changing the connection factory JNDI dynamically in Ftp Adapter

  Consider a usecase where you need to send the same file over to five different ftp servers. The first thought that might come to mind is to create five FtpAdapter references one for each connection-factory location. However, this is not the most optimal approach and this is exactly where "Dynamic Partner Links" come into play in 11g.    If you're running the adapter in managed mode, it would require you to configure the connection factory JNDI in the appserver console for the FtpAdapter. In the sample below, I have mapped the connection-factory JNDI location "eis/Ftp/FtpAdapter" with the ftp server running on localhost.           After you've configured the connection factory on your appserver, you will need to refer to the connection-factory JNDI in the jca artifact of your SCA process. In the example below, I've instructed the FTPOut reference to use the ftp server corresponding to "eis/Ftp/FtpAdapter".     The good news is that you can change this connection-factory location dynamically using jca header properties in both BPEL as well as Mediator service engines. In order to do so, the business scenario involving BPEL or Mediator would be required to use a reserved jca header property "jca.jndi" as shown below.     Similarly, for mediator, the mplan would look as shown below.       Things to remember while using dynamic partner links: 1) The connection factories must be pre-configured on the SOA server. In our BPEL example above, both "eis/Ftp/FtpAdater1" and "eis/Ftp/FtpAdater2" must be configured in the weblogic deployment descriptor for the FtpAdapter prior to deploying the scenario. 2) Dynamic Partner Links are applicable to outbound invocations only.

  Yesterday I wrote about how we can install SQL Server 2014. Right after the blog post was live, I received a question from the developer that he has installed SQL Server 2014 and attached a database file from previous version of SQL Server. Right after attaching database, he was not able to work with the latest features of Cardinality Estimation. As soon as he sent me email I realize what has happened exactly. When he attached database, the database compatibility was set to still of the earlier version of SQL Server. To use most of the latest features of SQL Server 2014, one has to change the compatibility level of the database to the latest version (i.e. 120). Here are two different ways how we can change the compatibility of database to SQL Server 2014′s version. 1) Using Management Studio For this method first to go database and right click over it. Now select properties. On this screen user can change the compatibility level to 120. 2) Using T-SQL Script. You can execute following script and change the compatibility settings to 120. • Management Reporter Installation – Lessons Learned Part II - Dynamics GP

  After feeling pretty good about my deployment skills of Management Reporter for Dynamics GP a few weeks ago, I ran into two additional lessons learned that I wanted to share. First, on another new deployment, I got the error shown below which says “An error occurred while creating the database.  View the installation log for additional information.”  This problem initially pointed me to KB 2406948 which did not provide resolution. After several hours of troubleshooting, I found there is an issue if the defaults database locations in SQL Server are set to the root of a drive. You will want to set the default to something like the following to get it installed; C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA.  My default database locations for the data and log files were indeed sitting on the H:\ and I:\ drives. To change this property in your SQL Server Instance you need to open SQL Server Management Studio, right click on the server, and choose properties and then database settings. When I initially got the error, I briefly considered creating the ManagementReporter database by hand, but experience tells me that would have created more headaches down the road. The second problem I ran into with this particular deployment of Management Reporter happened when I started the FRx conversion utility.  The errors reads “The ‘Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0’ provider is not registered on the local machine. I had a suspicion that this error was related to the fact FRx uses outdated technology and I happened to be on a new install of Server 2008 R2.  A knowledge base search quickly pointed me to KB 2102486.   I was trying to find my databse for local db under localhost etc but no luck. The following led me to just connect to it, kind of obvious really when you look at your connections string but.. its sunday morning or something.. At a very high level, LocalDB has the following key properties: LocalDB uses the same sqlservr.exe as the regular SQL Express and other editions of SQL Server. The application is using the same client-side providers (ADO.NET, ODBC, PDO and others) to connect to it and operates on data using the same T-SQL language as provided by SQL Express. LocalDB is installed once on a machine (per major SQL Server version). Multiple applications can start multiple LocalDB processes, but they are all started from the same sqlservr.exe executable file from the same disk location. LocalDB doesn't create any database services; LocalDB processes are started and stopped automatically when needed. The application is just connecting to "Data Source=(localdb)\v11.0" and LocalDB process is started as a child process of the application. A few minutes after the last connection to this process is closed the process shuts down. LocalDB connections support AttachDbFileName property, which allows developers to specify a database file location. LocalDB will attach the specified database file and the connection will be made to it.

• Enabling XML-documentation for code contracts

  One nice feature that code contracts offer is updating of code documentation. If you are using source code documenting features of Visual Studio then code contracts may automate some tasks you otherwise have to implement manually. In this posting I will show you some XML documentation files with documented contracts. I will also explain how this feature works. Enabling XML-documentation in project settings As a first thing let’s enable generating of code documentation under project settings. Open project properties, move to Build page and make check to checkbox called “XML documentation file”. Save project settings and rebuild project. When project is built go to bin/Debug folder and open the XML-file. Enabling code contracts documentation Code contracts have their own settings and conditions for documentation. Open project properties and move to Code Contracts tab. From “Contract Reference Assembly” dropdown check Build and make check to checkbox “Emit contracts into XML doc file”. And again – save project setting, build the project and move to bin/Debug folder. Now you can see that there are two files for XML-documentation: <assembly name>.XML <assembly name>.old.XML First files is documentation with contracts, second file is original documentation without contracts. Messages that I provided with code contracts are also available in documentation. If I wrote very good and informative messages then these messages are very useful also in contracts documentation. Code contracts and Sandcastle Sandcastle knows nothing about code contracts by default. There is separate package of file for Sandcastle that is provided you by code contracts installation. You can read from code contracts manual: “Sandcastle (http://www.codeplex.com/Sandcastle) is a freely available tool that generates help les and web sites describing your APIs, based on the XML doc comments in your source code. The CodeContracts install contains a set of les that can be copied over a Sandcastle installation to take advantage of the additional contract information. The produced documentation adds a contract section to methods with declared requires and/or ensures. In order for Sandcastle to produce Contract sections, you need to patch a number of files in its installation. Please refer to the Sandcastle Readme.txt found under Start Menu/CodeContracts/Sandcastle for instructions. A future release of Sandcastle will hopefully support contract sections without the need for this patching step.” Integrating code contracts documentation to Sandcastle will be one of my next postings about code contracts. Conclusion if you are using code documentation then documentation about code contracts can be added to documentation very easily. All you have to do is to enable XML-documentation for contracts and build your project. Later you can use Sandcastle files provided by code contracts installer to integrate contracts documentation to your output documentation package.
