• Converting MSDN license to full, commercial license

  I had to throw a machine together in a bit of a hurry- to replace a machine that suddenly failed (no one had bothered to keep a "warm" backup) It has Windows Server 2008 and SQL 2008 The snag is, I installed them off our MSDN subscription media, due to me not having "licensed" software. I need to put this machine into production. We are in the process of buying the licenses from a MS reseller now. Is there a way to "convert" the MSDN license to production on both Windows Server and SQL?

In the process of checking the hardware, I notice that the case fans have accumulated a lot of green "gunk" and I've tried wetting the edge of a paper towel to wipe and rub it off. Still, there is always some residue remaining. What's the best way to clean off this gunk? Thanks in advance. No pictures, but I can take some if needed.

  Running yum --security check-update returns this message: Security: kernel-3.x.x-x.63 is an installed security update Security: kernel-3.x.x-x.29 is the currently running version I already ran the yum security update on the kernel, but it looks like it didn't change the version running on the system. What needs to be done to make it run the new kernel? Are there any concerns about why it didn't change during the installation process? The yum log just shows installed for the new kernel no error messages.

• Will terminal keep executing a command after i disconnect my VNC session?

  I established a remote session in a MacOSX (10.6.8) from my PC (Windows7) using VNC. I initiated terminal and it is currently executing a task that will take probably 1 day before completing. Should I expect that even if I disconnect the VNC session, Terminal will keep running after I disconnect? I assume so since I used VNC just to remotely start the process but want to double check. Can anybody tell me if I am wrong?

• Amazon EC2 - how to determine how busy each CPU is

  I have an Amazon EC2 micro instance. I believe that this is 1 core (or 2 for periodic bursts) with 4 CPU's. I'm getting confused with the terminology (ECU vs CPU vs Core) but really I would like to see how busy each CPU is. When I look at top it seems to be showing me just the cores. I want to see if my process is be spread out across the available processors and how busy each is, what is the appropriate command to do this?

  I'm in the process of migrating to a new server, but some traffic that should be going to old server is now coming to the new server before I am ready to migrate. My provider used an IP used as the secondary nameserver on the old server as the primary IP on the new server, so now my secondary nameserver is directing traffic to the new server. I can deduce from the TechNet documentation that the de-duplication action itself is an asynchronous process - not unlike how the SIS Groveler used to work - but there is virtually no detail about the implementation (algorithms used, resources needed, even the info on performance considerations is nothing but a bunch rule-of-thumb-style recommendations). Insights and pointers are greatly appreciated, a comparison to Solaris' ZFS de-duplication efficiency for a set of scenarios would be wonderful.

  I am trying to ping one of my local host and checking CPU process to see how "Ping of death" attack behaves. I tried to ping my other PC which is in local network with 192.168.44.2 IP Address. I tried this, ping -l 5000 192.168.44.2 and I got error like this, ping: -l flag: Operation not permitted I am on MacOSX Lion. How can I remove this flag so machine can let me ping with preload? • Why do firewire drives on Mac OS cause processes to go into uninterruptible wait?

  I have a Western Digital My Passport Studio external hard drive. It works with either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. I've noticed that when I have it connected to Firewire, after a few hours, processes on my Mac start to go into an uninterruptible wait state. Eventually the system becomes so hard locked that I can't even shut it down. I have Spotlight indexing of the drive disabled, and the mds process seems to be the one that triggers this eventual system collapse.

• Refreshing user's group membership in active directory without log-off/log-on

  So, when user logs in to their workstation, they receive SIDs of groups they are members of, and this is used for the length of the session, until logging off. Is there a way to refresh membership SIDs information without actually having to log off and log on again? I've added myself to a group, but can't log off without interrupting running process that requires these permissions. Don't want to have to go through these steps again...
