• What is the best practice to segment c#.net projects based on a single base project

  Honestly, I can't word my question any better without describing it. I have a base project (with all its glory, dlls, resources etc) which is a CMS. I need to use this project as a base for othe custom bake projects. This base project is to be maintained and updated among all custom bake projects. I use subversion (Collabnet and Tortise SVN) I have two questions: 1 - Can I use subversion to share the base project among other projects What I mean here is can I "Checkout" the base project into another "Checked Out" project and have both update and commit seperatley. So, to paint a picture, let's say I am working on a custom project and I modify the core/base prject in some way (which I know will suit the others) can I then commit those changes and upon doing so when I update the base project in the other "Checked out" resources will it pull the changes? In short, I would like not to have to manually deploy updated core files whenever I make changes into each seperate project. 2 - If I create a custom file (let's say an webcontrol or aspx page etc) can I have it compile seperatley from the base project Another tricky one to explain. When I publish my web application it creates DLLs based on the namespaces of projects attached to it. So I may have a number of DLLs including the "Website's" namespace DLL, which could simply be website. I want to be able to make a seperate, custom, control which does not compile into those DLLs as the custom files should not rely on those DLLS to run. Is it as simple to set a seperate namespace for those files like CustomFiles.ProjectName for example? Think of the whole idea as adding modules to the .NET project, I don't want the module's code in any of the core DLLs but I do need for module to be able to access the core dlls. (There is no need for the core project to access the module code as it should be one way only in theory, though I reckon it woould not be possible anyway without using JSON/SOAP or something like that, maybe I am wrong.) I want to create a pluggable environment much like that of Joomla/Wordpress as since PHP generally doesn't have to be compiled first I see this is the reason why all this is possible/easy. The idea is to allow pluggable themes, modules etc etc. (I haven't tried simply adding .NET themes after compile/publish but I am assuming this is possible anyway? OR does the compiler need to reference items in the files?)

  I have a GridView that uses custom paging inside an UpdatePanel (so that the paging and sorting of the gridview don't cause postback). The sorting works fine, but the paging doesn't. The PageIndexChanging event is never called.   Hello, I am trying to send a basic email through Google Apps/Gmail using C# (System.Net.Mail/Framework 4) and I am having trouble doing so. I am receiving the following exception: "The operation has timed out." Using ports 25, 465, and 587 Hard coding the config settings in the c# code instead of using the web.config Sending and telneting from multiple network locations to ensure the firewall/ISP was not blocking it Ensured that POP was enabled in the GMail settings (according to Google this should turn on the ability to send using SMTP) Changing the send from and replyTo address to ensure they match the account (apparently a GMail necessity). I am able to send and receive email fine through the GMail interface for both of my email accounts. I have also tried the settings and solutions offered in Question # 757987 to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

• Can I encrypt web.config with a custom protection provider who's assembly is not in the GAC?

  I have written a custom protected configuration provider for my web.config. When I try to encrypt my web.config with it I get the following error from aspnet_iisreg aspnet_regiis.exe -pef appSettings . -prov CustomProvider (This is running in my MSBuild) Could not load file or assembly 'MyCustomProviderNamespace' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. After checking with the Fusion log, I confirm it is checking both the GAC, and 'C:/WINNT/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/' (the location of aspnet_iisreg). But it cannot find the provider. I do not want to move my component into the GAC, I want to leave the custom assembly in my ApplicationBase to copy around to various servers without having to pull/push from the GAC. Here is my provider configuration in the web.config. <configProtectedData> <providers> <add name="CustomProvider" type="MyCustomProviderNamespace.MyCustomProviderClass, MyCustomProviderNamespace" /> </providers> </configProtectedData> I want aspnet_iisreg to check my ApplicationBase Bin folder for this assembly. • IIS 6 with wildcard mapping and UNC virtual directory problem

  Hi. On our production servers (win 2003 with IIS6 and load balanced with an F5 BIGIP), we have a problem when introducing wildcardmapping on IIS6. We use .net Framework 3.5 SP1. The issue manifests itself as by the server only sometimes serving the images stored on a virtual directory pointing to a UNC path. Sometimes the images are displayed, and sometimes not. Removing the wildcard mapping solved this problem. I will need wildcard mapping on the server for future features, so any help/pointers to if this is a known problem will be very helpful. In advance, thanks for any help. • SqlBulkCopy causes Deadlock on SQL Server 2000.

  I have a customized data import executable in .NET 3.5 which the SqlBulkCopy to basically do faster inserts on large amounts of data. The app basically takes an input file, massages the data and bulk uploads it into a SQL Server 2000. It was written by a consultant who was building it with a SQL 2008 database environment. Would that env difference be causing this? SQL 2000 does have the bcp utility which is what BulkCopy is based on. So, When we ran this, it triggered a Deadlock error. Error details: Transaction (Process ID 58) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction. I've tried numerous ways to try to resolve it. like temporarily setting the connection string variable MultipleActiveResultSets=true, which wasn't ideal, but it still gives a Deadlock error. I also made sure it wasn't a connection time out problem. here's the function.   Hi this is a discussion between me and me to understand isolated storage issue. can you help me to convince me about isolated storage!! This is a code written in windows form app (reader) that read the isolated storage of another win form app (writer) which is signed. where is the security if the reader can read the writer's file, I thought only signed code can access the file! If all .Net applications born equal and have all permissions to access Isolated storage, where is the security then? If I can install and run Exe from isolated storage, why I don't install a virus and run it, I am trusted to access this area. but the virus or what ever will not be trusted to access the rest of file system, it only can access the memory, and this is dangerous enough. I cannot see any difference between using app data folder to save the state and using isolated storage except a long nasty path!! I want to try give low trust to Reader code and retest, but they said "Isolated storage is actually created for giving low trusted application the right to save its state". • Properly changing Ajax MultiHandle Slider parameters on postbacks

  Hi all, In VS2010 I have VB.NET codebehind aspx pages and I'm using Ajax multihandleslider extensions to filter search results on numerical values. Fistly, the multihandle sliders don't display in the designer... I have to remove the slider targets tag: In order to make it display in the designer... this isn't so much a big issue but an annoyance. I am displaying items in a given category. So I get the max and min prices for all items in that category and assign the sliderextension max/min values appropriately. This works fine until... I change the item category and go get a new max/min value for the slider control. I set the max/min values, then I set the target textbox values each to the corresponding max/min values. The slider handles don't repaint (or init?) properly Like say for example my initial min/max is 1/100 if I do a full postback and change the max value to 1000 then the slider bar (correctly) stays the same size but the handle appears WAYYYY to the right off the page and I have to scroll to it. When I click it, it shoots back onto the slider bar. I'm pulling my hair out... why do the slider handles only appear properly when I first set the min/max values?

• Programmatically open an email from a POP3 and extract an attachment

  We have a vendor that sends CSV files as email attachments. These CSV files contain statuses that are imported into our application. I'm trying to automate the process end-to-end, but it currently depends on someone opening an email, saving the attachment to a server share, so the application can use the file. Since I cannot convince the vendor to change their process, such as offering an FTP location or a Web Service, I'm stuck with trying to automate the existing process. Does anyone know of a way to programmatically open an email from a POP3 account and extract an attachment? The preferred solution would reside on a Windows 2003 server, be written VB.NET and secure. The application can reside on the same server as the POP3 server, for example, we could setup the free POP3 server that comes with Windows Server and pull against the mail file stored on the file system. BTW, we are willing to pay for an off-the-shelf solution, if one exists. Note: I did look at this question but the answer points to a CodeProject solution that doesn't deal with attachments.

  I have an ASP.NET web application that requires users to select their appropriate time zone so that it can correctly show local times for events. In creating a simple approach for selecting the time zone, I started by just using the values from TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones(), and showing that list. The only problem with this is that since our application is primarily targeted at the United States, I'd like to show those entries first, basically starting with Eastern Time and working backwards (West) until I reach Atlantic time. What's a good approach to do this in code?

  I have a WCF service hosted in a web application (IIS). I need to expose 1 end point over wsHttp and the other over netTcp. I am on a IIS7 environment that makes it possible for me to host non HTTP based services. Anyways, when I browse the .svc file using a browser, I get the error: The service cannot be activated because it does not support ASP.NET compatibility. ASP.NET compatibility is enabled for this application By googling, I realized that WCF runs in two modes - Mixed and ASP.NET compatible. When I apply the attribute [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] However, it appears that once I apply this attribute to the Service Contract implementation, I cannot use a non HTTP binding. How do I set it up so that: I can support non HTTP endpoints I can host the service on a Web app I don't create multiple services one with aspnet compatibility turned on and the other turned off

  I have a .NET 4.0 web application which implements an error handler within the Application_Error event of Global.asax. When an exception occurs this intercepts it and sends me an email including a variety of information like the logged in user, the page the error occurred on, the contents of the session etc. This is all great but there is some fundamental detail missing which I seem unable to locate. • Hashtable is that fast

  Hi s[0]*31^(n-1) + s[1]*31^(n-2) + ... + s[n-1]. Is the hash function of the java string, I assume the rest of languages is similar or close to this implementation. If we have hash-Table and a list of 50 elements. each element is 7 chars ABCDEF1, ABCDEF2, ABCDEF3..... ABCDEFn If each bucket of hashtable contains 5 strings (I think this function will make it one string per bucket, but let us assume it is 5). If we call col.Contains("ABCDEFn"); // will do 6 comparisons and discover the difference on the 7th. The hash-table will take around 70 operations (multiplication and additions) to get the hashcode and to compare with 5 strings in bucket. and BANG it found. For list it will take around 300 comparisons to find it. for the case that there is only 10 elements, the list will take around 70 operations but the Hashtable will take around 50 operations. and note that hashtable operations are more time consuming (it is multiplications). I conclude that HybirdDictionary in .Net probably is the best choice for that most cases that require Hashtable with unknown size, because it will let me use a list till the list becomes more than 10 elements. still need something like HashSet rather than a Dictionary of keys and values, I wonder why there is no HybirdSet!! So what do u think? Thanks

• How Can I Find What's Causing My Transaction to Get Promoted?

  I have web site which serves web services (a mixture of .asmx and WCF) which is mostly using LINQ to SQL and System.Transactions. Occaisionally we see the transaction get promoted to a distributed transaction which causes problems because our web servers are isolated from our databases in such a way that it is not possible for us to use MSDTC. I have configured tracing for System.Transactions by adding the following to my web.config: <system.diagnostics> <sources> <source name="System.Transactions" switchValue="Information"> <listeners> <add name="tx" type="System.Diagnostics.XmlWriterTraceListener" initializeData="tx.log" /> </listeners> </source> </sources> </system.diagnostics> It's very interesting and shows me when the transaction is promoted, but I find that it doesn't really help be discover why. Is there an equivalent tracing mechanism for ADO.NET that will show me when connections are created, including the variables that affect pooling (user, cnn string, transaction scope)?
