• GZipped Images - Is It Worth?

  Most image formats are already compressed. But in fact, if I take an image and compress it [gzipping it], and then I compare the compressed one to the uncompressed one, there is a difference in size, even though not such a dramatic difference. The question is: is it worth gzipping images? the content size flushed down to the client's browser will be smaller, but there will be some client overhead when de-gzipping it. Please advise.

• Z-index preventing on hover attribute on another element [migrated]

  I have two different elements (div class="") within a larger container. Let's call them div class="overlay_container" and div class="title." The div class="overlay_container" has a subclass, .image, which creates an overlay over the entire larger container on hover. The div class="title" has a z-index of 10,000 and lies over .image and therefore over the overlay. Unfortunately, when you hover over "title," the subclass overlay image underneath disappears. I know the problem is obviously that the "title" div is right over the other divs and therefore the on hover will disappear due to the z-index. But how do I fix this? How do I make it so that when you hover over the "title," the .image overlay still appears? If your answer involves jQuery, could you please tell me where to put the script (before the /head tag)? The site has a Homepage, a Store page (where all accessories are displayed), a page for each of the accessories description, an about page and a contact page. There is also a whole set up for shopping cart and checkout (irrelevant to this question). My issue is the SEO. Where can I put the keywords? The home page has only the menu and some photos. The store page displays the items and its titles. Then the specific item's page has a description of the item (pulled from the database), category and price. However, I feel like this is not enough for SEO for google ranking. Where could I add tags in this type of site?

  We are planning to set up a complete ERP and CRM system for a medium-sized global company, that might turn into a essential tool for all locations once deployed. For now these locations include USA, Germany, China and Indonesia, but the list is growing quickly. My question is, where it is best to physically locate the server to ensure the access times are optimal from all (future) locations? On my mind, I am dealing with multiple connected servers (a cloud?), where each of our users is served by the physically closest server. • Will I get penalised by google for overflow hidden? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? 5 answers I have 2 divs next to each other, div A and div B. Div A displays a whole wordpress post and div B displays about 15 excerpts of posts with the same tag. To get this looking nice I set the hight of div B to be the same as the hight of div A with javaScript. This means alot of post excerpts will be hidden due to overflow hidden on div B. Will Google penalise me for this, and if so, how can I make this work and still please Google? Ps. I would gladly prevent the excerpts from being indexed but the main post must be indexed Ds.

• How to redirect visitors to the server that is closest to them and where to place the servers?

  I am focusing on providing fast page refreshes for my visitors and I wonder where is the smartest spot to place my servers on? I understand that the best would be to place a server in every country or even city, but that is of course not doable with my economy. I am thinking of maybe setting up three servers, one in the middle of USA (Kansas?), one in Italy and one in Sweden. What do you think about that? I don't care about Africa since they haven't even got computers so I won't get traffic from there anyway. China, North Korea etc are probably just visiting chinese websites, they barely know english anway... The next problem is how do I redirect a visitor from Finland to the Swedish server? I don't want the visitor from Finland to be using the USA server or vice versa.

  I have a portfolio site where I am trying to host some of my work, so people can download my work. Some of these files include exe executables, and some are jar executables, which are run through batch. When a user tries to download my apps, it says that the file is not commonly downloaded and may be harmful, and therefore blocks the download. If I zip the folders, it still does the same thing. Any format i choose, still blocks the downloads. How can I stop chrome from doing this. Is there a way I can verify my files so they will be considered as trusted? Thanks in advance!

• Site inaccessible by some people, fine for others [on hold]

  A couple of days ago my website www.howellphoto.com (hosted by one.com, wordpress site) started loading really slowly, and I have been unable to access any pages linked from the homepage. Several of my friends have found the same issue, yet many are able to access the site without problem. Live support at one.com have not been all that much help, requesting the ip addresses of a few people who cannot access the site, and saying it could be a firewall issue. Wordpress support (my site was created in prophotoblogs) have been better and have updated all plugins, etc, but can see no issue from their end. My main issue is that even if there was a local fix that I could do on my computer, this would not help wih any potential customers visiting my site for information! This is driving me crazy!!! • http request terminating early

  I noticed that on some of my sites, images were occasionally not getting downloaded fully. After a bit of investigation it appears that it is not restricted to images - .css, .js etc were also occasionally terminating early. The faults appear to be random. When I use the debug/proxy tool Fiddler2 reports that fewer bytes have been received than were requested. Firebug reports "Image corrupt or truncated". Obviously this is mainly a concern between me and my hosting company. However despite many emails they have not been able to get to the bottom of it. Transfer to another hosting company is obviously an option but is really a last resort. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or can anyone suggest what might be causing it. Or any apache setting or something that I can ask them to check out. Will apache log this kind of error - they havent been able to provide me with any logs, but if I know exactly where things have been logged, maybe I can prompt them in to action.

• Is there a proven concept to website reverse certificate authentication?

  We're looking at exposing some of our internal application data externally via a website. The actual details of the website aren't that interesting, it'll be built using ASP.NET/IIS etc, that might be relevant. With this, I'm essentially I'm looking for a mechanism to authenticate users viewing my website. This sounds trivial, a username/password is typically fine, but I want more. Now I've read plenty about SSL/x.509 to realise that the CA determines that we're alright, and that the user can trust us. But I want to trust the user, I want the user to be rejected if they don't have the correct credentials. I've seen a system for online banking whereby the bank issues a certificate which gets installed on the users' computer (it was actually smartcard based). If the website can't discover/utilise the key-pair then you are immediately rejected! This is brutal, but necessary. Is there a mechanism where I can do the following: Generate a certificate for a user Issue the certificate for them to install, it can be installed on 1 machine If their certificate is not accessible, they are denied all access A standard username/password scheme is then used after that SSL employed using their certificate once they're "in" This really must already exist, please point me in the right direction!
