Boot problems w/ External HDD

I'm having a problem with booting a live image off of a USB Hard Drive. I used Startup Disk Creator to make an Ubuntu 11.10 live image on a partition on my external so that I can use it on various computers. I set it up with ~4GB of persistent data So far I've tried it on two computers. One, a Dell, will boot to my external but it loads the select boot device very slowly. It hangs on a screen with an underscore for up to 5 minutes until it allows me to select which drive I want to boot from. After that, it works great. However, on my primary computer it doesn't work at all. It's an Acer from 2009 and it won't even recognize the drive. I don't see it anywhere in BIOS or the select boot disk list. The light on the external will come on at boot just fine so I know it's powering it at this time. Both computers worked perfectly with my 4GB flash drive that I had partitioned half and half (1st half FAT32 and second Ubuntu 11.10 live)

Struggles to connect to network when using WPA with a BCM43225

When booting my laptop, it will try to connect to my wireless network, however a window keeps popping up asking me for my security password, which has already been saved. I have to keep deleting my network settings, and reconnecting, otherwise it keeps failing to connect. My wireless is set up with a WPA, I do not want to lower my security because of this, but it is a pain and can take me 15mins plus to finally connect. The problem has only become apparent since a fresh install of 11.10. IPV6 disabled. Increasing the screen resolution in Ubuntu 10.04

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 edition on my Acer 5738Z laptop. The screen size of my laptop is about 15'' but the screen resolution in Ubuntu is stuck at 1366x768. I know that my monitor could give better resolution, because previously I was running Win XP and I was able to set higher resolution there. So, my questions here: How do I increase my screen resolution, here? As per the answer given to a related question, I tried to edit the xorg.conf file, but I couldn't find the file in the place /etc/x11/. Should I create this file? If I have to install screen drivers separately, where could I find it?

Losing partitions after every reboot

I have an Acer laptop with one hard disk, which up until yesterday had 4 partitions: Recovery Partition (13GB) C: (140GB) D: (130GB) OEM Partition (10GB) I read that the OEM partition has all the stuff needed to restore the laptop to the factory settings, but since I'd already created restore disks and I needed the space, I wanted to get rid of it. Yesterday, I used diskpart to do that. In diskpart, I selected the OEM partition and issued the delete partition override command which removed it. Then I extended the D: partition into the unused space using windows disk management. Everything worked fine, until I rebooted my laptop, at which point the D: drive vanished. Looking in windows disk management again, I can see that there's an OEM partition of 140GB, which is obviously my D: drive. So I used EASEUS Partition Master and assigned a drive letter to the 'OEM' partition and I was able to access my files again. However, every time I reboot, it reverts back. How do I fix this permanently?

Internet is far slower in Ubuntu than Windows 7 on dual-booted machine

Edit: I'll leave the original post as-is, but after further investigation, it appears that the problem is something to do with my wi-fi card. Speeds are normal when I connect via cable. Edit 2: Problem was solved. It was something to do with the wireless card drivers. I normally use Windows 7 on my laptop and have internet speeds that are normally about 15-20 Mb/s. I have recently dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10, and have noticed that internet speeds are drastically slower in Ubuntu. When tested, speeds range from 0.2-2 Mb/s, although occasionally being significantly faster than that or even stopping completely for short periods of time. I've also noticed that when first booting into Ubuntu, speeds start fairly fast, and drop to incredibly slow with a few seconds to a few minutes. There's still some possibility that the issue may be with my ISP, as things seem slower than usual even in Windows, but I suspect that it is related to Ubuntu, as things are far slower in Ubuntu than in Windows. I'm wondering, what could be the cause of this? Potentially relevant information: -I've dual booted before on this machine with earlier versions of Ubuntu (different ISP at the time) with no problem. Laptop Power down.

This question relates to my ACER laptop running Windows VISTA. Currently when I close the lid of my laptop the laptop does not power down, however when I open the lid it does. When looking at the power settings it is set to power down when closing the lid. The trigger to this seems to be the lid being opened not being closed. I seem to recall this behaviour changing when I installed Windows Media centre. Any ideas on how I can get the power down to work on the lid closing. thanks

Second display freaks out when waking from sleep

I have two laptops, an older white MacBook and a brand new Macbook Pro. When either computer is on my desk, I connect it to a second, widescreen display (Acer, a couple years old, uses DVI). The Macbook connects via mini DVI and the MBP connects via mini displayport. When the Macbook is connected and everything goes to sleep, I'm able to wake the machine and both displays in the normal way and everything is fine. Sometimes, when waking the MBP, the laptop and primary display are fine, but the second display shows a bunch of static. If I restart the display, everything's fine. This probably happens 70% of the time when the MBP goes to sleep while connected to this display. Any idea what could be causing this?

Chromebook C720 - issue suspending and booting

I recently bought an Acer C720 chromebook (Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) with the intention of loading Linux and using it as a cheap development laptop while on my holiday. The installation sort of went ok but initially the trackpad didn't work so I ran a script that mostly fixed that. My current issues are: Booting: it still goes to the chrome "unknown os" white screen - I have to press ctrl L - then escape then 1 then wait for 30 secs while it seems to be searching for something. Then Ubunto loads up fine. Any idea how to fix this? Suspend: if I close the lid of the laptop then it doesn't seem to suspend properly. At least when I open the lid the screen appears to be on but the screen is blank with a cursor. Nothing responds on the keyboard and I have to hold the power down to restart it. The suspend from the top menu has the same issue. Moving windows: I don't have a mouse click button so how do I move windows around the screen? Launcher bar: I've set mine to auto hide (which it does) but what exactly do you have to do to get it back? I just repeatedly jab the mouse at the side of the screen and eventually it pops up. I don't mind starting all over again but obviously a quick fix is preferred ;) Mike Ubunto 14.04.1 LTS Kernel 3.13.0-32-generic PS Sorry for so many questions.

ATI Radeon 5800 series dual monitor unity not 3D accelerated

When I had a single monitor setup, without Xinerama, with my current setup of Ubuntu 11.10, ATI 5800 series card, Unity showed transparencies, shadows, etc. (although graphics was reported as 'Standard' in the control/settings panel). Having switched to a dual monitor setup, dell 24" UltraSharp and a smaller Acer monitor, Unity shows only as 2d, even though I'm not loggin in to that display manager. WebGL performance is very sluggish, I'm getting the impression that the processor is doing all the work and the card isn't even accessible even though the drivers are installed (from the ubuntu repository, I did not compile custom drivers). Any tips on how to enable full 3D accelerationn and video card support. No picture on HDMI Output from a Pioneer 921 AV Receiver to a Projector

I am trying hard to tackle a what seemed to be simple problem if wiring my setup together. The setup: Mac Mini (2011) with HDMI Output Pioneer 921 K AV Receiver Acer HD Projector (HDMI) When I hook up my Mac Mini directly to the Projector with a 30 foot (10 meter) HDMI Cable everything is just fine. The picture is sharp and the colors brilliant. However, when I send HDMI to the receiver (into the BD HDMI Input) then I get absolutely no HDMI output to the projector, it keeps saying "no signal". Is there perhaps some magic combination of setup buttons that may help me resolve this problem?

Windows 7 wifi reports "no network access" and "no internet access" but connects in fedora

I am running windows 7 home basic (64bit) on a Acer 5742G laptop with Atheos wifi adapter in it. Yesterday, I hiberneted my computer as I always do and up untill then the wifi was working fine. When I booted my computer up again today I started having a strange problem: It detects my wifi but after connecting to it, it keeps on oscillating between states of no network access and no internet access. I can't connect to anything (the internet or my router). I tried to reset my internet protocol stack using this fixit file. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall my network driver. Neither helped. I am using the same laptop's fedora installation right now and the wifi is working perfectly fine. Please help. Edit To add additional details, I have Microsoft Security essentials as my antivirus software and I haven't messed with the firewall or the router configurations.

unstable / variating sound level (volume) within same song / clip

Hello, I have a pretty standard Acer desktop (I guess a predecessor of the X5900 model). when playing mp3 / radio / youtube clips, the sound level is changing WITHIN the clip, highly annoying. in the case of an mp3, the same mp3 will play at a constant sound level on my iPod, so clearly an issue with the computer. problem existed under vista, I upgraded to windows 7 and have the same issue. I guess it might be soundcard-related, so updated the drivers, no luck neither. any idea ? thanks

windows hosted networok on windows 8

my sister is using Acer laptop, that has an intel WLAN card and supports windows hosted network(checked in command prompt).Am using the basic way using netsh wlan command also, then am using netsh start wlan command.The hosted network gets created and it could b seen in "Network and Sharing Center" as the . I also went to Device manager, selected WLan card, made sure"allow this device to wake computer from sleep" is selected. Now I went to the newly created , clicked properties, and under sharing enabled allow this to be shared(but I am not able to select The name of the wifi my sis wants to share (in this case her college wifi name, LEts say QP4,Ethernet and Local Area connection are the only two option that are coming). Also the SSID name is not being shown in her mobile nor when I click the tower icon at the tray area,Any suggestions on what might be going wrong?She is using windows 8. Should I look for updated drivers? Her laptop is only 6 months old, i don't think the drivers are outdated. Any advice shall be appreciated.

Windows Media Center won't Play MSN Video Player

My install of Windows Media Center won't play MSN Video Player videos. They appear in the main guide, but when I click on them, nothing happens. If I look on the main menu, I don't have any icons for MSN Video player there. People have suggested I try downloading updates, but that makes no difference. I have internet connectivity. My region is set to the UK (which is where I am). If I navigate to the MSN Video Player using Internet Explorer, the videos play fine. The machine is an Acer Revo RL100, running Windows 7 64-bit. Does anyone have a solution for this? Any help would be gratefully received.

File browsing on Nautilus extremely slow after upgrade to 12.04

One month ago I updated (no fresh install) to 12.04. Since then nautilus got extremely slow. When I open a folder that contains many subfolders I sometimes have to wait 4 seconds until everything is displayed. This has never been like that before, in previous versions I could always browse between my files extremely fast. I looked in "additional drivers" and changed from Nvidia current-version-update to the recommended drivers. This drastically increased the performance and speed of file browsing, unfortunately just for a couple of days. Now I am stuck again with the very slow Nautilus. I also tried to install the latest nvidia driver like it was suggested here: http://www.techlw.com/2012/03/install-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-1204.html Did not work at all. Also when using the dash to try to find files it does not respond properly: does not find files or loads for ages until the file is displayed. Can I replace my notebook's fan without replacing the heat sink?

My laptop (Acer Travelmate 8204) has started making a grinding noise, which seems to be coming from the fan (not the hard drive). Some articles online mention replacing the fan, but others imply that one should replace both the fan and the heat sink. Does it make sense to replace the fan only? (addendum: does this procedure really take 3 hours for a noob, as this video implies? UPDATE: the fan certainly seems to be on the "top" layer when I open my laptop but some parts of it extend under other layers) Some additional info in response to comments: I have run MS scandisk on the hard drive a few times since the grinding started. It usually reports finding something or other but the computer's behavior doesn't change I'm pretty sure it's the fan based on where the noise is coming from. I employed the cardboard tube trick from the PC World article.

My wifi worked perfect until I updated to the latest version of Ubuntu. Now I don't find any wireless connections at all. I have tried lots of guides on the internet but I can't get it to work. SSD runs faster on Windows as compared to Linux [closed]

Windows 7 seems to install, boot and run much smoother & faster than each the three linux distros I have recently tried (Ubuntu 12.04 unity, Linux mint 13 MATE, and Fedora 17 on gnome 3.4). Why am I facing bad performance in Linux? I have tweaked my Linux installs for the SSD (enabling trim, disabling swap, etc.) I'm using an Acer TravelMate with i5-2410m processor, intel hd 3000 graphics, 8 gigs of ram, and a 256 gb samsung 830 ssd. Edit: Boot times are 10-15 seconds slower, there is noticeable delay from login to fully loaded desktop, and in general does not appear to be as responsive as my old windows 7 install or the Linux guests I had running on it.

Using onboard and pci-e graphics card at the same time

Hello wonderful people. I know there are several other posts with similar questions. I also know how to use Google. I also have read up on posts discussing bumblebee, crossfire, ati catylist and many other interesting topics. I would just like someone to give me advice on how to use the onboard and pci-e graphics at the same time. I know the computer is capable of doing this. It works in Windows. I can use the VGA and DVI onboard port and the HDMI port of the add on card all at the same time. Works great in Windows 7, In Ubuntu, it seems only one or the other will work. I can use any combination of two displays on either adapter: VGA and HDMI..HDMI and DVI..so forth and so on. I have started experimenting with xorg.conf files, but have not been able to get any of them to work. Does a hard drive "working hard", i.e. when defragmenting or otherwise continuously active, significantly affect a laptop's temperature?

Trying to diagnose and fix an overheating Acer 5735 laptop, running speedfan and doing general workload to try and cause the overheat conditions. I notice that windows xp is badly fragmented according to defraggler, at 58% fragmentation. So I defrag whilst watching the speedfan window, which was at the start reporting high warning style symbols for all of the sensors. After the defrag, I rebooted and ran a few programs, and even defraggler again and the sensors in speedfan all reported green i.e. not high. Wondering if there is a correlation between windows fragmentation causing the hard drive to work harder and produce more heat inside the laptop? dont want to just assume that the problems are resolved, so either speedfan is not accurate enough or fragmentation can lead to additional hard drive heat? All comments or suggestions welcome.
