  I am running an Ubuntu Server (12.0.4-beta2; kernel 3.2.0) in VirtualBox (host is Win7) and I want to use shared folders. I've followed the manual to set up vbox guest additions http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#idp5801200 but this error occurs with every startup: Starting the VirtualBox Guest Additions ...fail! (modprobe vboxguest failed) Starting VirtualBox Guest Addition service VirtualBox Additions module not loaded! When I try it myself: $ modprobe vboxguest FATAL: Module vboxguest not found. Did I do something wrong, what do I need to fix it? Thanks for help.

• Dropped hard drive won't mount

  I have a 2 TB HFS+-formatted external hard drive that got dropped a couple of days ago while transferring files onto a Macbook Pro. Now the drive's partitions won't mount. Disk Utility can see the drive, but doesn't recognize that it has any partitions. I've tried using Data Rescue 2 to recover files off of it, but it couldn't find anything. In addition, our local computer repair shop said they couldn't find anything on there either. I know that I could ship the drive off to someone like DriveSavers, but I was hoping for a cheaper option (since they start at about $500 for the attempt). Is there something else I could try on my own? Would TestDisk be able to help with something like this?

  I found out that when I press the Insert key on the client I will block the OS X VNC server by putting it in a "help mode" where you get the question mark mouse cursor. The mouse works but I cannot use the keyboard anymore. Details: Reconnecting using VNC does not help Normal keyboard is working fine on the mac The only solution in addition to relogin was to stop the VNC server on mac using: killall OSXvnc-server After few seconds it will restart by itself and it will work. I don't like current workaround and looking for something better. Tested with these versions of the VNC client and all put the VNC server in the question mark mode, requiring service restart: Ultr@VNC 1.0.8.2 RealVNC 4.1.3 I know that the problem is caused by the different/bad implementation of the VNC protocol in the server but do you need an workaround?

I went on the dd-wrt web site and I read the wiki, but I didn't see any files or instructions on how to change the firmware. The router database lists my router, but as I said: no files. In addition the "Supported" column lists "wip", what is wip? • DD-WRT with native IPv6

  My ISP provides native IPv6 support (ie. I can plug in my computer straight into the WAN and get an IPv6 address). However I can not get this working on DD-WRT. When I enable IPv6 and radvd in DD-WRT, the router gets in IPv6 address, but the devices on my LAN do not. I tried looking at the DD-WRT wiki, but this only displayed instructions for tunneling or other methods where native support isn't available. I found a small amount of sites thorough searching, but none of the methods these sites described gave my computers each a global IPv6 address. In addition, SSHing into the router using ping6 on sites such as ipv6.google.com causes "host unreachable" errors. Has anyone using DD-WRT configured a successful setup with native IPv6? I am using a Netgear WNDR3700 v2, with DD-WRT build 17201

• How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installing iTunes

  I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.

• Event Viewer: atapi errors

  Specs for Samsung N120 Netbook Atom N270 @ 1.60 GHz / 160 GB IDE HDD / 2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM / Windows XP Home SP3 So I'm still getting some atapi errors in my Event Viewer. Here are two atapi errors I am getting over and over again: (1) The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period. (2) The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0. In addition, I am repeatedly getting this warning as well: (1) An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation. I just got this back from repair, where before, I couldn't boot at all because I was led to a black screen saying "Operating System Not Found". Still, I got it back and it can boot again, without any hard drive replacement or data loss. So, how can I get rid of these errors and warnings? What could have happened during repairs to allow my netbook to boot again? Thanks in advance.

• iTunes 9.2 OS X - iTunes DJ not functioning correctly

  I have been using iTunes on my Mac for 4 years now without any problems at all. Recently, however, the iTunes DJ function has started misbehaving. Instead of showing the 5 previously played songs, and 15 upcoming songs randomly selected from the playlist I have defined in the settings, it instead shows the 5 previously played songs, plus many more than 15 upcoming songs. In addition, the upcoming songs are not from the playlist, they are from about 7 or so albums, in album order. I have changed settings, change the source playlist, restarted iTunes, rebooted the machine. All with no change. Does anybody have any idea how to get this working again? Thanks, Dave

• Any screen capture software that captures webcam, microphone inputs too ?

  I am going to conduct a user study. Apart from capturing the screen while the user is interacting with the system, I also want to capture the video/audio of the user. Is there any software that in addition to capturing the screen also overlays it with the webcam/microphone inputs. The goal is to capture the complete experience of the user: key/mouse interactions with the system along with their facial/vocal responses. I know that I can maybe run a screen-capture software and also run a software for capturing webcam audio/video alongside and try to sync/overlay both these streams with timestamps. But I am going to be dealing with probably several hundred hours of data. So I am looking for a tool that can streamline the process for me amap and help me keep my sanity at end of the process.   In addition to the main php.ini file. I would like to scan a php.ini file located in the root directory of a website on localhost. Is this possible? I have just done a lot of reading about this, but I am still not grasping exactly how this is done, or if it is even possible. I can do this on my remote server and it works. So not really understanding why wamp won't search my root directory for a php.ini.

  I am doing LAMP development for a mobile platform. However, the client browser does not allow me to view the source code of visited pages. I consider the source code to be of huge importance for debugging, so I would like to configure my web server so every time a user makes a request, in addition to sending the client a response, that response (the actual contents of the returned page) is also stored in a file with a filename I can cross-relate with access_log (maybe ip-timestamp-filename? or maybe a unique ID in an additional column in access_log?). I've searched quite a bit, but haven't even gotten close to finding what I'm looking for. Has anybody been able to do this?

• How to enable "Sleep" for Windows 2012 server

  I recently installed Windows Server 2012. This will serve as the dev-instance for our engineers and will be accessed in multiple time zones. I therefore plan to run this 24x7 but want to conserve energy by going to sleep mode when not in use & enable Wake-On-Magic-Packet. Based on the previous post it appears that there is no option to sleep Win Server 2012 with Hyper-V. Since I don't care much about virtualization now, I uninstalled Hyper-V. In addition to this, I have done the following 1) Ran powercfg -a. Don't find sleep. 2) Added [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hvboot] "Start"=dword:00000003 to try gaining sleep - no luck! 3) Only see Shutdown and Restart in power options.   I am running FreeBSD 7. running MySQL 5.1.36 from ports. I am trying to check some data in the MySQL binary log files, and I get the following error: # mysqlbinlog mysql-bin.000021 mysqlbinlog: unknown option '--ssl' In addition, I can't even view the help for this command: # mysqlbinlog --help mysqlbinlog: unknown option '--ssl' Why does mysqlbinlog not know about the option ssl? This server was compiled with SSL, and ssl is activated in the my.cnf configuration file. We use SSL for remote connections, but I am running this command on the local host.

  When I open Reporting Services Configuration Manager on my server, an error message appears that says: Reporting Services Configuration Manager An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 800706B3 This error appears before I can even attempt to connect to an SSRS instance. In addition to this problem, I'm not able to connect to my SSRS instance via SSMS on my desktop. When I attempt to connect, I get the following error message: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (mscorlib) Additional information: The operation could not be completed.   I have a ThinkPad T530 with Mini DP++ and NVS 5400M, which are said to support 2560 * 1600 resolution. The display is Dell 3007WFP, which also supports 2560 * 1600. But, I have never seen any cables or adapters that can connect them with full support to 2560 * 1600. Do you have any idea? THANK YOU! In addition, I found that mDP++ means I can use a passive adapter. No need for active adapter which is much more expensive. This is the only one that meets my needs, but it is not sold in the US. And this one seems to be OK, but I am not sure because it says "2.5 Gbps per channel", which may not be enough.

• Opinions on NTFS for Mac solution?

  I am currently using the free NTFS-3G to access my NTFS drive from the Mac. It seems pretty stable (except once in the very beginning, it locked up the Mac and corrupted my NTFS drive, which I then fixed with chkdsk from a PC). However, speed is NOT one of its virtues. In fact, it's painfully slow I've been looking at buying Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X 8.0. Their product comparison PDF claims nearly double the speed (vs NTFS-3G) in almost every category (read, write, etc...). In addition, there is now an unsupported native solution with the snow leopard. Can folks here share their experiences. Is the native solution stable enough to be used for daily work? Should I just go with Paragon?

• Why does my computer slow down after being on too long?

  I'm sure everyone has experienced it - if you leave a computer on too long, every once in a while, it needs a fresh reboot. I have a laptop, and I only hibernate it, but every week or two, I'm going to need to restart otherwise it will just slow down (usually when windows update makes me restart) I was wondering though... why? What are some of the things that occur that eat up memory that can seemingly not be freed unless I reboot the OS. In addition, are there any programs I can get that can free up this memory and keep the computer alive for longer? Preferably for windows 7.

• Windows Resource Monitoring Programs

  I work at a small tech start up managing websites with our own in house server side code. (In production, we use Windows Server 2008 boxes, running Java 6. In our dev boxes, we use Windows 7 running Java 7.) Recently, we had an issue where some of our boxes in production failed, and we didn't have means of trouble shooting, since we keep little to no monitoring logs about a given box's CPU/memory/RAM usage, etc. So, I'm wondering if there is some commercial/freeware that's the standard for performance monitoring/logging. Essentially, I'm just looking for an analytics system that is similar to the Windows Task Manager or the Resource Monitor, that serializes all of its data periodically. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that's also extensible, in case I'd like to add addition monitors in the future.

• Change environment variables as standard user (Windows 7)

  When clicking on "Advanced system settings", I need to login as the administrator and hence only edit the administrators environment variables (in addition to the machine wide ones). How do I edit the environment variables of a standard user? Details With the migration to Windows 7, I decided to work as a standard user instead of an unprivileged administrator. Works well so far but I encountered a tiny problem: When I try to change per user environment variables via the control panel I have to login as an administrator. But since I run that part of the control panel as the administrator I can only edit the administrators variables. How am I supposed to edit my own environment variables? Without resorting to extreme measures, such as editing the registry (as suggested in "Is there any command line tool that can be used to edit environment variables in Windows?" )

• HD Video Capture Card w/ Good API?

  Does anyone here know of a good HD video capture card that has a good (comprehensive) API? I administer a few servers that do some video encoding right now, but when we make the switch to HD cameras, they won't be sufficient. In addition to this, the servers we have now are black boxes, closed to me except to start/stop the video capture device. I'd like to be able to roll my own, so we can better integrate it with our existing systems, but I know almost nothing about what kind of HD capture cards are out there, and if I can avoid spending money just to test their APIs that would rock. So does anyone have any experience with this? All our other software is in C#, and I'd like to set up the new servers with web interfaces to start/stop the capture (also in C#, using .NET 3.5 probably). I'm not sure how language specific these APIs would be, but that's what I'm working with just as a reference point. I appreciate any help the community can give!

• Low-cost, Flexible Log Aggregation [closed]

  I'm starting to have quite the collection of Ubuntu VMs that I must manage. I'm starting to investigate Puppet for managing the configuration of all of them, and apticron to let me know what's out of date. But the issue I feel I should deal with sooner than later is log aggregation. I'd like to stay in the free/open source realm for now, seeing that we don't have much budget for something like splunk yet. In addition to syslog, I would like to collect application specific logs (We are running different apps on different machines, from nginx+passenger for rails, to Apache+Tomcat for java, to PHP for expression engine, and mysql/postgresql database server), so that we can analyze the relavent data. For now, I'm just looking to get all the logs one place.

• Black screen on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm experiencing some problems. The first thing I noticed is that when I click the Workspace switcher all I get is a black screen (I can guess where the different workspaces are located and clicked on them, not a practical solution though). In addition when I lock the screen or suspend the laptop (a Vaio VPCEB4M1E) I get a shifted screen (I see the right most vertical stripe on the left size of the monitor and nothing about all the rest, to put it clearly I can see the gear that allows me to turn the pc off, etc, but not much more..) when I go to the additional driver menu I see the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" are installed and the post-release update version is available. I don't know if the problem is driver related, so before doing anything I'd like to get some suggestions from you guys. Thanks you!
