    Are there any circumstances where it is favourable to manually create a stub type, as opposed to using a mocking framework (such as Rhino Mocks) at the point of test. We take both these approaches in our projects. My gut feel when I look at the long list of stub versions of objects is that it will add maintenance overhead, and moves the implementation of the stub away from the point of test.

    Given two related tables (reports, report_fields) where there can be many report_fields entries for each reports entry, I need to allow the user to enter new report_fields, delete existing report_fields, and re-arrange the order. Currently I am using a DetailsView to handle the editing of the reports. I added some logic to handle report_fields, and currently it allows you to succesfully re-arrange the order, but i'm a little stumped as to the best way to add new items, or delete existing items. The basic logic I have is that each report_fields is represented by a . It has a description as the text, and a field for each field in the report_fields table. I use JQuery Sortable to allow the user to re-arrange the LIs.   • Binding ListBox ItemCount to IvalueConverter

    Hi All, I am fairly new to WPF so forgive me if I am missing something obvious. I'm having a problem where I have a collection of AggregatedLabels and I am trying to bind the ItemCount of each AggregatedLabel to the FontSize in my DataTemplate so that if the ItemCount of an AggregatedLabel is large then a larger fontSize will be displayed in my listBox etc. The part that I am struggling with is the binding to the ValueConverter. Is there a magical way of doing this with Perl, or am I doomed to using a loop? If so, what is the most efficient way to do this?   • How to determine cpu, ram needed for rails app?

    What is the most accurate way to determine the amount of cpu speed and ram needed to run my rails app? I believe there are stress testing tools like Tsung, but how do I determine, for example, that I need X more ram, or X more CPU? I would like to find some way to roughly gauge the performance needs of my application so I can anticipate future needs. I think this data will also be useful for me to decide whether to upgrade one machine, or get another dedicated machine and put all the databases on that one. Essentially, I am concerned about scaling issues, and how to anticipate them. Thanks in advance for the help!

  • How can I temporarily redirect printf output to a c-string?

    I'm writing an assignment which involves adding some functionality to PostgreSQL on a Solaris box. As part of the assignment, we need to print some information on the client side (i.e.: using elog.) PostgreSQL already has lots of helper methods which print out the required information, however, the helper methods are packed with hundreds of printf calls, and the elog method only works with c-style strings. Is there I way that I could temporarily redirect printf calls to a buffer so I could easily send it over elog to the client? If that's not possible, what would be the simplest way to modify the helper methods to end up with a buffer as output?

  • Why does Microsoft Windows' performance appear to degrade over time?

    Windows XP/2k3 and earlier (can't attest to Vista, but suspect it's the same) all appear to become more sluggish over time as applications are installed and uninstalled. This is not a scientifically tested observation, but more of a learned-through-experience piece of wisdom. (I've always suspected the registry as being behind the issue.) Does anyone have any concrete evidence of this degradation occurring, or it just an invalid perception of mine?

    What is the best way to store the current mouse position (system-wide) and then (later) put the mouse at that stored point? [NSEvent mouseLocation] gets me the position, and I can move the mouse with a CGEventMouseMoved, but they each use a different co-ordinates system (I believe y=0 is the top for NSEvent and the bottom for a CGEvent). I'm worried about the robustness of capturing the screen height and using it to convert between the two - or is this the best approach?

    After trying to format my JSON data by hand in javascript and failing miserably, I realized there's probably a better way.     In SQL Server 2005, I'm trying to figure out why I'm not able to insert multiple fields into a table. The following query, which inserts one record, works fine: INSERT INTO [MyDB].[dbo].[MyTable] ([FieldID] ,[Description]) VALUES (1000,N'test') However, the following query, which specifies more than one value, fails: INSERT INTO [MyDB].[dbo].[MyTable] ([FieldID] ,[Description]) VALUES (1000,N'test'),(1001,N'test2') I get this message: Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 5 Incorrect syntax near ','. When I looked up the help for INSERT in SQL Sever Management Studio, one of their examples showed using the "Values" syntax that I used (with groups of values in parentheses and separated by commas). The help documentation I found in SQL Server Management Studio looks like it's for SQL Server 2008, so perhaps that's the reason that the insert doesn't work. Either way, I can't figure out why it won't work.

  • ASMX Web Service online works when all of the code is in one file without code-behind

    I have an ASMX Web Service that has its code entirely in a code-behind file, so that the entire contents of the .asmx file is: <%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="~/App_Code/AddressValidation.cs" Class="AddressValidation" %> On my test machine (Windows XP with IIS 5), I set up a virtual directory just for this ASP.NET 2.0 solution and everything works great. All my code is separated nicely and it just works. However, when we deployed this solution to our Windows Server 2003 development environment, we noticed that the code only compiled when all of the code was dropped directly into the .asmx file, meaning that the solution didn't work with code-behind. We can't figure out why this is happening. One thing that's different about our setup in our development environment is that instead of creating a separate virual directory just for this solution, we dropped it into an existing directory that runs a classic ASP application. So here we have a folder with an ASP.NET 2.0 application within a directory that contains a classic ASP application. Granted, everything in the ASP.NET 2.0 application works if all of the code is within the .asmx file and not in code-behind, but we'd really like to know why it's not recognizing the code-behind files and compiling it correctly.

    I'd like to run an app in a restricted private beta on heroku. We're changing the app regularly and haven't done a security audit. To stop anyone exploiting stuff, we'd like to lock down the whole site, so you need a password to access anything. Ideally similar to using .htaccess and .htpasswd files to lock an entire site on an Apache server. Is there a simple one shot way to do this for a heroku hosted app?
