• Quickest way to clone a GregorianCalendar?

  I'm trying to make a deep copy of an object, including a GregorianCalendar instance. I'm always wary of using clone() and it doesn't seem to have been overridden here, so I'm just doing the copy field by field. Ideally, there'd be a copy constructor, which I could use like so: GregorianCalendar newCalendar = new GregorianCalendar(oldCalendar); Unfortunately I can't find any such functionality in the API and am stuck trying to figure out which fields I need to get an exact copy. So, to make a copy of one of these calendars, how would you do it? Am I missing some simple shortcut here?

• Removing a Subversion folder from the client and server

  Hi. I have been using Subversion for a few days now and have a question... I have a folder deep in my subversion trunk that I want to remove and replace with another folder. I have read about this on here and tried: Export: I clicked on the folder I wanted to remove I then created a new backup folder elsewhere when prompted I then exported Delete: I next chose the delete option (in TortoiseSVN) on the folder I wanted to remove and clicked it. The folder I want to remove now has an "X" over it as does all of the subfolders and files. But, when I go to the Subversion repository on the remote server, I still see the folder I want to remove and all of its files. What do I have to do to get the clients to forget about this folder and the Subversion server to remove it permanently from its sub-folders? Thanks in advance...

• Finding files with bash and copy to another location and reducing depth of folders

  I'm trying to recover a mates hard drive, there is no structure what so ever so music and images are everywhere but in named folders sometimes 5 folders deep, I've managed to write a one-liner that finds the files and copies them to a mounted drive but it preserves the file structure completely. What I'm after is a bit of code that searches the drive and copies to another location and copies just the parent folder with the mp3/jpg files within and not the complete path. The other issue I have is the music is /folder/folder/folder/Artist/1.mp3..2.mp3..10.mp3 etc etc so I have to preserve the folder 'Artist' to give him any hope of finding his tracks again. What I have working currently: find /media/HP/ -name *.mp3 -fprintf /media/HP/MUSIC/Script.sh 'mkdir -p "/media/HP/MUSIC/%h" \n cp "%h/%f" "/media/HP/MUSIC/%h/"\n' I then run the script.sh and it does all the copying. • BASH Script to cd to directory with spaces in pathname

  Argggg. I've been struggling with this stupid problem for days and I can't find an answer. I'm using BASH on Mac OS X and I'd like to create a simple executable script file that would change to another directory when it's run. However, the path to that directory has spaces in it. How the heck do you do this? This is what I have... Name of file: cdcode File contents: cd ~/My Code Now granted, this isn't a long pathname, but my actual pathname is five directories deep and four of those directories have spaces in the path. BTW, I've tried cd "~/My Code" and cd "~/My\ Code" and neither of these worked. If you can help, THANKS! This is driving me crazy!!

• Update ancestors in a nested set?

  I am using nested sets to represent a tree in mysql, like so: Tree ID title lft rgt Given the ID of a node in the tree, what is the easiest / best way to UPDATE that node as well as all of it's ancestors? For example, let's say that the node ID (36) is 4 levels deep in the tree. I would like to update its title, as well as every parent node's title, all the way to the root, to the word "fish". (Should be four updates in all.) Thanks for your help!

• How to show controls hierarchy in Winform designer

  Hi, One of our client has an old winform application that contains forms with a lot of controls on them. Some of those controls have a deep hierarchy and that make it to hard to select them in the designer. I would need to understand this hierarchy to make modification and correct some bugs, is there a tools, plugin or something to be able to clearly see this hierarchy ? Something like in the aspx source when you have a breadcrumb of where you are in the HTML hierarchy (HTML Body div etc ...) or something more visual maybe ? Any ideas ? PS : we use Visual Studio 2008, .NET 2.0

• Best way to update UI from other classes?

  I've got several nested classes, with the following structure: BackupLocation contains list of BackupClients BackupClients contains a list of BackupVersions BackupVersions contains a list of BackupFiles In my UI - Im populating a combo box with BackupLocations - and have several listboxes for the clients, versions, and files. When processing the BackupLocations - I can update my status bar easily because thats the top level class that the UI creates. But how can I update the status bar and progress bar on each file being processed? Since the BackupFiles are 3 levels deep, I cant see any way to update the UI. The actual processing of the files are within the BackupVersion class - which loads its files. I think it probably has something to do with events and delegates - but am unsure exactly how to proceed with this, any help would be appreciated.

  I have read that a variable should never do more than one thing. Overloading a variable to do more than one thing is bad. • Ruby Koans 202: Why does the correct answer give a syntax error?

  I'm working through the about_classes.rb file in the Ruby Koans, and have hit a brick wall with the "inside_a_method_self_refers_to_the_containing_object" test. Here's the code: class Dog7 attr_reader :name def initialize(initial_name) @name = initial_name end def get_self self end def to_s __ end def inspect "<Dog named '#{name}'>" end end def test_inside_a_method_self_refers_to_the_containing_object fido = Dog7.new("Fido") fidos_self = fido.get_self assert_equal <Dog named 'Fido'>, fidos_self end So, I'm trying to make the first half of the assert_equal evaluate to the second half (fidos_self). When I work it out in irb, fidos_self returns <Dog named 'Fido'>, but I keep receiving a syntax error for that answer. I've seen this similar post: Ruby Koans: Where are the quotes in this return value?, but his solution (putting fido instead of <Dog named 'Fido'>) causes my rake to abort, saying the stack level is too deep. This is driving me nuts. What am I missing here?

• do people value information or aesthetic value of websites ? [closed]

  I'm thinking, why does the web have to be so colorful. meaning, all the information is buried deep beneath layers of flash, javascripts, html and images. Sure, a good positioning of these media files, create an aesthetic value but how important is it to the user ? moreover, aren't people looking for information after all ? why can't the internet be a uniform looking data warehouse ? now we've gotta digg through all the aesthetic junk, using shady web scraping techniques, unless RSS or API is provided. why can't we settle for just a dull grey button and framesets for navigation ? why can't all sites have navigation frame on the left and top ? why can't all sites put their damn data always in normalized table tag ?

• JSON Response {"d":"128.00"} but displaying "128"

  Hi all, I have been working on a shopping cart that the user can add/remove order items as they please and am returning an updated sub-total via a webservice using jQuery $.ajax Here is how I am calling the webservice and setting the sub-total with the response. //perform the ajax call $.ajax({ url: p, data: '{' + s + '}', success: function(sTotal) { //order was updated: set span to new sub-total $("#cartRow" + orderID).find(".subTotal").text(sTotal); }, failure: function() { //if the orer was not saved //console.log('Error: Order not deleted'); } }); The response I am getting seems perfectly fine: {"d":"128.00"} When I display the total on the page it displays as 128 rather than 128.00 I am fully sure it is something very simple and silly but I am so deep into it now I need someone with a fresh brain to help me out!! Before I got my first job, I thought I knew C# pretty well, then I was thrown right into the deep end, and now I know I have a good command over the language. I would like to apply the same method to other languages, but unfortunately, I'm sort of stuck with C# at work. Ideally, something similar (but broader in scope) to Project Euler is ideal.   My app is based strongly on a lot of NSUserDefault keys and values. I want to implement a temporary defaults profile which the user can activate to get a special task done easily. For this, some of the user defaults must be changed temporarily so the app adjusts it's interface appropriately. I started to just manually change those NSUserDefaults settings, but this also destroys the user's original settings. Is it possible to keep a backup of the user's NSUserDefault settings and restore them after the user quits the temporary mode or the app? Like I see it, NSUserDefaults actually is just an NSMutableDictionary which is generated out of a plist file. So I would just make a deep copy of that and later assign that copy somehow back to NSUserDefaults?

  How can I use jQuery for messing with a particular div, but not in the current document - in a variable, that contains HTML? The point is that I want to show a preview of a page (a piece of it's content) in a modal window, when the link to this page is clicked. Well, onClick I load this whole HTML into a variable via JSON and then... how would I find a particular div I need in it? It's gonna be almost impossible to parse it with PHP before converting it into JSON and giving back to jQuery processor because of a deep hierarchy. Basically, is it even possible to do smth like $( 'div#some-id' ).blabla(); not for the current document, but for the document, stored in a variable? Thx everyone in advance.

• Template apps for iPhone

  Is there a good place to get starter apps for iPhone, where you choose from any of a large set of permutations?...for instance with a nav bar and a flip screen and a 3 deep table view, with Core Data support etc. I guess what I was hoping for is some kind of wizard where you can check a few boxes and have a working app as a starting point....but more than just the 3 or 4 choices that come with xCode. If not a wizard, just a nice set of a couple dozen permutations. Also....is there any good sample apps out there that show the difference between identical apps, one which uses Interface Builder and one not? Aside from being handy for myself, I'd think these would be great as a teaching tool. I've googled a bit and come up with nothing.

I've searched for opensource projects to look and the only thing I had found was django-cashflow. This app uses python-money. I've read some of the code and the ways it's coded seems a bit weird to me and it's not fully complete. Is the app worth to take a deep look? Does anyone know about another similar app? Really, all I need to do to kick this off is write a .Net app that can talk with Outlook and count the number of messages received and sent for give dates. I'm using the Google Collections Library which provides immutable versions of Map, List, and Set. My application model looks like a tree: Scene is a top-level object that contains a reference to a root Node. Each Node can contain child Nodes and Ports. An object graph might look like this: Scene | +-- Node | +-- Node | +- Port +-- Node | +- Port +- Port If all of these objects are immutable, controlled by a top-level SceneController object: What is the best way to construct this hierarchy? How would I replace an object that is arbitrarily deep in the object tree? Is there a way to support back-links, e.g. a Node having a "parent" attribute?

And, because it is unit testing I don't want to go that deep as to test what result2 comes back as... I'd rather mock the data somehow... like, be able to call the function and replace just that one call.

• C/C++ function definitions without assembly

  Hi, I always thought that functions like printf() are in the last step defined using inline assembly. That deep into stdio.h is burried some asm code that actually tells CPU what to do. Something like in dos, first mov bagining of the string to some memory location or register and than call some int. But since x64 version of Visual Studio doesent support inline assembler at all, it made me think that there are really no assembler-defined functions in C/C++. So, please, how is for example printf() defined in C/C++ without using assembler code? What actually executes the right software interrupt? Thanks.
