• SQL SERVER – Mirroring Configured Without Domain – The server network address TCP://SQLServerName:50

  Regular readers of my blog will be aware of my friend who called me few days ago with very a funny SQL Problem SQL SERVER – SSMS Query Command(s) completed successfully without ANY Results. This time, it did not take long before he called me up with another interesting problem, although the issue he was facing this time was not that interesting and also very specific to him, however, he insisted me to share with all of you. Let us understand his situation at first. My friend is preparing for DBA exam Exam 70-450: PRO: Designing, Optimizing and Maintaining a Database Server Infrastructure using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and for the same, he was trying to set up replication on his local laptop. He had installed two different instances of SQL Server on his computer and every time when he started the mirroring, it failed with common error message. The server network address “TCP://SQLServer:5023? cannot be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and that the ports for the local and remote endpoints are operational. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1418) Well, before he contacted me, he searched online and checked my article written on the error in mirroring. However, he tried all the four suggestions, but it did not solve his problem. He called me at a reasonable time of late evening (unlike last time, which was midnight!). I even tried all the seven different suggestions myself, as previously proposed in my article; however, none of them worked. While looking at closely at services, I noticed something very simple. He was running all the instances on ‘Network Services’. In fact, his computer was a stand-alone computer. There was no network at all. Also, there was no domain or any other advance network concepts implemented. I just changed services from ‘Network Services’ to ‘Local System’ as his SQL Server was running on his local system and there were no network services. This prompted to restart the services. As this was not the production server and his development machine, we restarted the services on the laptop (do not restart services on production server without proper planning). After changing the ‘services log on’ account to localsystem, when he attempted to reconfigure the mirroring it worked right away. As usually in production server, proper domains are configured and advance network concepts are implemented I had never faced this type of problem earlier. My friend insisted to post this solution to his situation, wherein there was no domain configured and setting up mirroring was throwing an error. According to him, this is bound to help people, like him, who are preparing for certification using single system. • PHP 5.3.1 Undefined Symbol: OnUpdateLong error on Apache Startup

  I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on this server. I had PHP 5.2 installed via the package manager. I removed it to install PHP 5.3.1 by hand. I built the packages like so ./configure --prefix=/opt/php --with-mysql --with-curl=/usr/bin --with-apxs2=/usr/bin/apxs2 make make install This installed PHP 5.3.1 in /opt/php/ $ php -v PHP 5.3.1 (cli) (built: Dec 7 2009 10:51:14) Copyright (c) 1997-2009 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2009 Zend Technologies However, when I try to start Apache I get this. # /etc/init.d/apache2 restart * Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Syntax error on line 185 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.load: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so: undefined symbol: OnUpdateLong [fail] Any ideas what's causing this error? All the references I can see have to do with building php5 packages for php4 or the like. PHP4 has never been installed on this machine.

• Server 2003 on domain wont let domain user have local profile

  I have a few servers that are acting in this behavior, you log in and always get put into a temporary profile. The server is licensed for TS. The user I am testing with has local admin rights so it doesn't seem to be a permission issue on the server. I'll first get a message that the users roaming profile cannot be found, even though we dont use roaming profiles. I then get another message immediately after saying a local profile could not be loaded, so it will only use a temp profile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Red 5, First setup "ssl_error_rx_record_too_long" error message

  I am using Windows 7 and I installed Red 5 0.9.1 just recently. After it installed I put 127.0.0.1 as the IP adress and 5080 as http port. After I start the service in windows I try to connect to the localhost in firefox (http://localhost:5080) and get this error An error occurred during a connection to localhost:5080. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) I checked my global flash settings and allowed localhost to pass along with the Red 5 folder in C/programfiles/red5. I currently have the up to date versions of JDK and JRE also. Any tips on what might be wrong?

• MySQL and User level logging

  I have been looking at logging only certain users activity in MySQL. I found that the logging could be enabled or disabled for all users but one of the service using the db does a lot of queries and therefore I would like to only log specific users. Google told me that a flag can be SET to enable disable logging, however, I cannot modify the service DB connection code and asking every single user to enable logging before they do anything might not be as reliable as I want. So, do you know if there is any way to log only a set of users queries ? Thanks !

You have 7.3 or earlier I am using Postgres 8.3 which makes the error message strange. The file "LocalSettings.php" was not created to the directory config so I cannot continue the installation without solving the problem.

• Ubuntu dpkg error , after crash and filesystem error recovery

  Ubuntu recently crashed , causing it's partition damaged ( which is EXT4) and Ubuntu was unable to boot , because it couldn't mount anything , only displays Busybox So I used the Live CD to run fsck on the partition, which fixed it , but deleted some nodes Now Ubuntu is working , but some files were missing , for example I lost the Panels configurations and Chromium's Extensions The Most Annoying problem , that there is some files corrupted , for example when I try to install any program, I got this (Reading database ... 95%dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: files list file for package 'libservlet2.4-java' is missing final newline I tried these commands dpkg --configure -a apt-get -f install and from GUI , Synaptic Package Manager Fix Broken Packages So this file "libservlet2.4-java" Does anyone knows what it does ! and where it's location ? and how can I fix/get-correct-version-of it ? Also , is there any way I could tell Ubuntu to Check for ALL it's file , and if there is something corrupted it should recover it form the CD ?

  I am putting together a test environment using Amazon's EC2 for me and some friends to collaborate on a project. I am not a server guy but I do know my way around a bash prompt and have done some work on ubuntu before. I am using Amazon Linux AMI i386 EBS and have gotten apache and php running. Now I need to create the user accounts my friends and I will use to upload files (sftp) and work on the project (ssh). How should I go about this? Should I just use adduser and configure it like normal? Or should I use the AWS IAM groups?

  Using GoDaddy to host my site (I know that's my first problem)! :-) Trying to setup customer error messages for my site. GoDaddy allows you to setup a 404 in their control panel, but I can't override this, or setup any additional error redirects, specifically a 500-server error. • user input of one php script pass to another php without modification in first php script

  hi all.. Consider two php scripts(o.php & t.php) o.php contains both html and php. html here gets user input for eg:user name and password this information is passed to php using php-self. I want the user input of o.php passed to t.php without any modification in o.php. I ve used include and require in the t.php but the problem is it displays the output of o.php but i need only the user input values from o.php without displaying the output of o.php. Using functions or session in o.php we can pass user input but am in the situation tat i should not add or modify o.php. thanks in advance!!

• Perl: catch error without die

  I'm playing around with error handling and got a little problem. I connect with a database using the DBI module. I do my own error handling by using a subroutine that I call upon an error. I can catch my own dies and handle them just fine but when my database connection fails, the DBI module apparently prints out it's own die : DBI connect(...) failed: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach) at ... How would I go about catching this ? I tried using $SIG{DIE} like so : local $SIG{__DIE__} = sub { my $e = shift; print "Error: " .$e; }; This is on the bottom of my main file, in this file I also call the connect subroutine that is available in a module of my own. I also tried putting this piece of code on the bottom of my module but it still prints the error without the "Error:" in front of it.

  For everyone that was thinking of the error_reporting() function, then it isn't, what I need is whenever a MySQL query has been done, and the statement has like if($result) { echo "Yes, it was fine... bla bla"; } else { echo "Obviously, the echo'ing will show in a white page with the text ONLY..."; } Whenever statements have been true or false, I want the error to be appeared when redirected with the header() function and echo the error reporting in a div somewhere on the page. Basically something like this: $error = ''; This part appears inside the div tags <div><?php echo $error; ?></div> So the error part will be echoed when redirected with the header() if($result) { $error = "Yes, it was fine... bla bla"; header("Location: url"); } else { $error = "Something wrong happened..."; header("Location: url"); } But that just doesn't work :(

• How to keep the session of user login?

  Hi, I have an app that requires user to register. I've got the app conected to PHP in my server to do the logic of register/login and so, this is not problem at all. But, I want to keep a session of the user in local, so the user doesn't have to login again every time he runs the app. So, I want something like this: First time user, he opens the app, register and login. Do some stuff with the app and closes it. Open the app again, the user is recognized so he doesn't need to login again. I only need to store an ID and a Username (both fetched from the DB in the login php method). What's the best way to do this?? I've thought about doing a custom preference, store the data in files or even a local DB (sqlite). Any suggestions?

But when I open https://...../foo/nonexisting.html an empty page is displayed. If I remove the <error-page>...</error-page> code from web.xml and open https://...../foo/nonexisting.html then tomcats own 404 is displayed. Any hints?

  As part of a mini-haskell compiler that I'm writing, I have a function named app. What I want this function to do is take in these arguments epp (App e1 e2). The first step would be to evaluate e1 recursively (epp e1) and check if the output would be an error. If not then evaluate e2 and then call another function eppVals to evaluate the outputs of the calls on e1 and e2 which I defined as v1 and v2 respectively. epp (App e1 e2) | epp e1 /= Error = eppVals v1 v2 | otherwise = Error where v1 = epp e1 v2 = epp e2 <- parse error on input `=' Logically I believe what I have written so far works but I'm getting a parse error on input = where I stated above. • Should I use a separate 'admin' user as my "root sudo" or grant sudo to my 'app' user?

  I'm still wrapping my brain around the Ubuntu 'nullify root' user management philosophy (and Linux in general) and I'm wondering if I should 'replace' my root user with a user called 'admin' (which basically has all the powers of the root, when using sudo) and create another user called 'app' that will be the primary user for my app. Here's the context: I'll be running a LNMP stack on Ubuntu 12.04 Server LTS. There will be only one app running on the server. The 'app' user needs to have SUPER privileges for MySQL. PHP will need to be able to exec() shell commands. The 'app' user will need to be able to transfer files via SFTP. And I'm thinking this would be the best approach: nullify 'root' user create a user called 'admin' that will be a full sudoer of root, this will be the new "root" user of NGINX, PHP, and MySQL (and all system software) grant SUPER privileges to 'app' in MySQL Grant SFTP privileges to only the 'app' user. As I'm new to this, and the information I've found in researching it tends to be of a more general nature, I'm wondering if this is a solid approach, or if it's unorthodox in a way that would cause issues down the road.   Simple task: Send a windows message with dynamically allocated data, e.g. an arbitrary length string. How would you manage the responsibility to free this data? The receiver(s) of the windows message could be responsible to free this data. But: How can you guarantee that all messages will actually be received and thus the linked data will be freed? Imagine the situation that the receiver is shutting down, so it won't process it's message queue any more. However, the message queue still exists (for some time) and can still accept messages, which won't be processed any more. Thanks!

• Kate gives out debug messages on the console from which it is started

  I am new to Linux. I use Ubuntu 11.04. Whenever I open a file with kate from the commandline, with 'kate &' (or without ampersand), Kate starts out giving messages on the console. It continuously gives them out as I save a file or close one. They look like debug messages to me (sample below). I have used Synaptic package manager to install Kate. Uninstalling and installing the dev version did not make any change. Soon my console becomes cluttered. Is there a way to suppress these messages? There was nothing explicit in Kate settings either.   I've been having a complete nightmare trying to configure proftpd. I've got proftp server working with an sql database. However I want to have any files uploaded able to viewed by the webserver running on the same box. The folders get created in /var/tmp/ as rwx------ 2 ftpuser ftpgroup 4096 Oct 8 20:35 50730c4346512 drwx------ 2 ftpuser ftpgroup 4096 Oct 8 20:38 50730f3a811ca I've tried adding www-data to group with the following usermod -g www-data ftpuser But this doesn't allow the web server access. In proftpd.conf I have the following umask set Umask 0022 It doesn't seem to make a difference what I set that value to. /etc/group (sure I've messed up one of these two but I'm getting desperate) ftpgroup:x:2001:www-data www-data:x:33:ftpgroup /etc/passwd www-data:x:33:33:www-data:/var/www:/bin/sh proftpd:x:108:65534::/var/run/proftpd:/bin/false ftp:x:109:65534::/srv/ftp:/bin/false ftpuser:x:2001:33:proftpd user www-data:/bin/null:/bin/false The ftpuser table in the database has uid / gid set to 2oo1 for both. I'm going absolutely crazy trying to solve this any help would be greatly appreciated. p.s Also, although if I manually connect to the ftp server I can upload files via FileZilla. Although this isn't working for the web-camera, although there is talky talky going on between the server and the camera.

• Messages don’t always appear in Mail.app

  I asked this question on serverfault, but it was correctly suggested that superuser is better -- and I agree: My wife and I share a Mac and use different accounts. We both use Apple's standard Mail.app. We can also get to our email accounts via SquirrelMail that our webhost provides. Both SquirrelMail and Mail.app are connecting via IMAP. My wife was the first to notice that not all messages were getting to the Mail.app. She would check the Mac (our main machine) and then a little while later check mail from another machine via SquirrelMail and see messages there that should have been on the Mac. She would go back and those messages would never show up. Lately, I have been seeing the same thing, though less often. I can't reproduce it, or just look at a message to see if they haven't been moved over. I've looked in Junk, etc. and the Mac simply never sees those messages via IMAP. Does anyone have a guess to something I could poke around at?

• Enjoy How-To Geek User Style Script Goodness

  Most people may not be aware of it but there are two user style scripts that have been created just for use with the How-To Geek website. If you are curious then join us as we look at these two scripts at work. Note: User Style Scripts & User Scripts can be added to most browsers but we are using Firefox for our examples here. The How-to Geek Wide User Style Script The first of the two scripts affects the viewing width of the website’s news content. Here you can see everything set at the normal width. When you visit the UserStyles website you will be able to view basic information about the script and see the code itself if desired. On the right side of the page is the good part though. Since we are using Firefox with Greasemonkey installed we chose the the “install as a user script option”. Notice that the script is available for other browsers as well (very nice!) Within a few moments of clicking on the “install as a user script button” you will see the following window asking confirmation for installing the script. After installing the user style script and refreshing the page it has now stretched out to fill 90% of the browser window’s area. Definitely nice! The How-To Geek – News and Comments (600px) User Style Script The second script can be very useful for anyone with the limited screen real-estate of a netbook. You can see another of the articles from here at the site viewed in a  “normal mode”. Once again you can view basic information about this particular user style script and view the code if desired. As above we have the Firefox/Greasemonkey combination at work so we installed as a user script. This is one of the great things about using Greasemonkey…it always checks with you to make certain that no unauthorized scripts are added. Once the script was installed and we refreshed the page things looked very very different. All the focus has been placed on the article itself and any comments attached to the article. For those who may be curious this is what the homepage looks like using this script. Conclusion If you have been wanting to add a little bit of “viewing spice” to your browser for the How-To Geek website then definitely pop over to the User Styles website and give these two scripts a try. • How do I get rid of these "There is a problem with your tablet driver" messages?

  Every time I run certain applications (including but not limited to GIMP, Microsoft Visual Studio, and 3DS Max), I get the following message box: There is a problem with your tablet driver. Please reboot your system. If the problem persists reinstall or update the driver. Obviously I've tried rebooting and that hasn't fixed anything. Secondly, I'm not running a tablet PC. This is just Windows XP SP3 running on a Dell Precision PWS490 desktop workstation. How do I get rid of these error messages? The applications still load normally after dismissing them, but they're rather annoying. Using Process Explorer, I got the call stack from the message box. It's coming from wintab32.dll. Here's the call stack when running GIMP (irrelevant frames omitted): ... 8 USER32.dll!MessageBoxA+0x45 9 wintab32.dll!WTMgrPacketHookExA+0x44a 10 libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll!gdk_display_list_devices+0x37 ... So, does anyone know how I can get an updated version of wintab32.dll or have any other ideas? I've been keeping my system up to date with Windows Updates. The timestamp on wintab32.dll is 2007-03-30 17:38, and its MD5 sum is ffdc332007c9dc6dd346c8ac2b09a015.
