• Is there any way that an export-to-Excel function can be scalable?

  Summary: ASP.Net website with a couple hundred users. Data is exported to Excel files which can be relatively large (~5 MB). In the pilot phase (just a few users), we are already seeing occasional errors on the server in the exporting method.   For the first time I am needing to join information from two tables and am quite nervous about doing it without any advice first. Basically, I am building a secure site that is accessed by authorised users. I have my login table with user_id, username, password Once the user is on the site, they have the option of inputting data into another table called input. At the moment this table only captures the information that is entered, not the user_id or username of the inputter. I would like the form to be able to input the user_id and/or username from the login table into the input table. Please could somebody talk me through this process? I am sure that once this is amended, I will then be able to use the table to only allow the logged in user to access the information that he or she have inputted, is that correct? Many thanks

• How can I link two Java serialised objects back together?

  Sometimes (quite a lot, actually) we get a situation in Java where two objects are pointing to the same thing. Now if we serialise these separately it is quite appropriate that the serialised forms have separate copies of the object as it should be possible to open one without the other. However if we now deserialise them both, we find that they are still separated. Is there any way to link them back together? • Is this time related process accounting stats gathering appropriate?

  Based on sys/acct.h (V1, not V3) I need to gather some user usage statistics based on a parser that parser the acct file line by line. The parser will run and parse the entire file every N seconds and I need to gather user statistics accumulated since the last run (N seconds back). I'm not sure what will be the most appropriate way to do it based on the info provided by sys/acct.h. Maybe something like this: if ((ac_btime + ac_etime) < (current_time - N)) { gather; } Also comp_t is said to be "floating-point value consisting of a 3-bit, base-8 exponent, and a 13-bit mantissa", but I think u_int16_t is just a unsigned short int. Should I be converting it to long it with the provided formula or not?

• Bioperl, equivalent of IO::ScalarArray for array of Seq objects?

  In perl, we have IO::ScalarArray for treating the elements of an array like the lines of a file. In BioPerl, we have Bio::SeqIO, which can produce a filehandle that reads and writes Bio::Seq objects instead of strings representing lines of text. I would like to do a combination of the two: I would like to obtain a handle that reads successive Bio::Seq objects from an array of such objects. Is there any way to do this? Would it be trivial for me to implement a module that does this? My reason for wanting this is that I would like to be able to write a subroutine that accepts either a Bio::SeqIO handle or an array of Bio::Seq objects, and I'd like to avoid writing separate loops based on what kind of input I get.   i'm trying to set up a server structure for an application i'm building in Node.js with socket.io. The weird thing is that if i access directly to the socket.io file, after refreshing a few times, it loads, so i suppose is "caching" the forwarding for the client when it makes the first request and reach the apache server. Any suggestion of how this can be solved? or what i can try or look about this?

• In Perl, given two IO::Socket's how do I connect 1st socket's input to 2nd's output and vice versa?

  Suppose I have made two connections in Perl with the help of IO::Socket. The first has socket $s1 and the second has socket $s2. Any ideas how can I connect them together so that whatever gets received from $s1 got sent to $s2 and whatever gets received from $s2 got sent to $s1? I can't understand how to do it. I don't know how to connect them together. I would expect to do something like $s1->stdin = $s2->stdout and $s2->stdin = $s1->stdout, but there are no such constructs in Perl. Please help me!   I'm building an webapp using Node.js+Express.js+socket.io.js on the backend. Do any of the popular front-end frameworks (Agility, Angular, Backbone, Closure, Dojo, Ember, GWT, jQuery, Knockback, Knockout, Spine, YUI, etc) integrate well with this backend for "real-time" applications? I want my application to have a very "real-time" feel. Specifically, when a user submits a form I want the information to be sent using web sockets to the backend for validation and (if validation passes) to be updated in the database. Then, the server-side will use web sockets to send a confirmation that the data was saved or some list of errors. I will use the server's response to update the page using JavaScript. I know all this can be done with any of the listed frameworks. I'm interested in features of particular frameworks that will help the framework integrate better with the Node-based backend than the other frameworks.

• Equivalent for Java's System.getProperty("java.io.tmpdir") in C ?

  As the title says, the java.io.tmpdir property in Java is really nice, and I can't find an equivalent for C. I'm writing for Windows and in Visual Studio. I don't want to just use something like C:\Temp because in later versions of windows the appropriate directory could be something like C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\Temp and a way to retrieve this would be much easier. I want a directory and not just a temp file because I'm downloading and executing a file from the internet. As a side note, if anyone can give me tips about how to better google for C stuff it would be much appreciated :)

  Please see the warning below taken from the StreamWriter class specification (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.streamwriter.aspx): "Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." I understand that a W3WC process contains two thread pools i.e. worker threads and I/O threads. A worker thread could contain many threads of its own (if the application creates its own System.Thread instances). Does the warning only relate to System.Threads or does it relate to worker threads and I/O threads as well I.e. as the instance variables of the streamwriter class are not thread safe then does this mean that there would be problems if multiple worker threads access it eg if two users on two different web clients attempt to write to the log file at the same time, then could one lock out the other?
