• Setting up wireless drivers in Ubuntu 9.10?

  I've just installed ubuntu to a notebook, deleting the windows xp that was installed before, so now nothing works I couldn't solve the problem of getting the blank screen with the versions 12.. and 10.. so now there is 9.10 installed, which works fine. Well, it boots up at least. I can't get working the drivers though. I'm totally new to linux, and I've read in some forums that in this version you have to install all of them yourself, because the system won't detect them automatically. Therefore I tried to find the drive for my wireless card, but actually I have no clue how to get it work. Could someone please help me out? So here are the specs: System installed as mentioned: Ubuntu 9.10 Computer: Acer Aspire 3100 Wireless according to laptop specs: 10/100 Fast Ethernet, Wake-on-LAN ready, Acer InviLink™ 802.11b/g Wi-Fi CERTIFIED I would really appreciate some detailed description to setting up my internet Thanks!!

• How to disable VGA

  If i run lspci | grep VGA I get below output which tells me below VGA cards are present on my computer. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2) 08:02.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc ES1000 (rev 02) The ES1000 is an onboard card which came with my machine. Do anyone know how to disable this VGA on my machine. The reason for this request is because if I run xrandr I get the output as shown below: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 50.0* 800x600 51.0 52.0 53.0 680x384 54.0 55.0 640x480 56.0 512x384 57.0 400x300 58.0 320x240 59.0 Which means I am not able to configure nVidia to accept smaller resolution. • Nexus One & Windows XP USB Driver

  I've been unable to get my Nexus One working as a development phone on Windows XP. I've got the driver (revision 3 for N1 support), I've got it installed according to the official installation guide, and the phone appears in the Device Manager just as the guide says it should. However, adb still can't find the phone. 'adb devices', for example, returns no active devices. Am I forgetting some basic step? One thing I've noticed is that the driver is labeled in Windows as version 2 released November, 2009 (I need version 3 from January 2010 for N1 support). However, I've never had version 2 installed. I've used the SDK to download version 3 several times - even deleted it and redownloaded it. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the version 3 driver multiple times. It still says version 2. Is this the problem, or this something completely unrelated? Note: The phone is working as a dev phone on Ubuntu, so I know the phone/cable/etc. are good. It's either my fault or the driver's.

  I have a problem when compiling a generic class with an inner class. The class extends a generic class, the inner class also. Here the interface implemented: public interface IndexIterator<Element> extends Iterator<Element> { ... } The generic super class: public abstract class CompoundCollection<Element, Part extends Collection<Element>> implements Collection<Element> { ... protected class CompoundIterator<Iter extends Iterator<Element>> extends ImmutableIterator<Element> { ... } } The generic subclass with the compiler error: public class CompoundList<Element> extends CompoundCollection<Element, List<Element>> implements List<Element> { ... private class CompoundIndexIterator extends CompoundIterator<IndexIterator<Element>> implements IndexIterator<Element> { ... } } The error is: type parameter diergo.collect.IndexIterator<Element> is not within its bound extends CompoundIterator<IndexIterator<Element>> ^ What is wrong? The code compiles with eclipse, but bot with java 5 compiler (I use ant with java 5 on a mac and eclipse 3.5). No, I cannot convert it to a static inner class.

• .NET EventHandlers - Generic or no?

  Every time I start in deep in a C# project, I end up with lots of events that really just need to pass a single item. I stick with the EventHandler/EventArgs practice, but what I like to do is have something like: public delegate void EventHandler<T>(object src, EventArgs<T> args); public class EventArgs<T>: EventArgs { private T item; public EventArgs(T item) { this.item = item; } public T Item { get { return item; } } } Later, I can have my public event EventHandler<Foo> FooChanged; public event EventHandler<Bar> BarChanged; However, it seems that the standard for .NET is to create a new delegate and EventArgs subclass for each type of event. Is there something wrong with my generic approach? EDIT: The reason for this post is that I just re-created this in a new project, and wanted to make sure it was ok. Actually, I was re-creating it as I posted. I found that there is a generic EventHandler<TEventArgs, so you don't need to create the generic delegate, but you still need the generic EventArgs<T class, because TEventArgs: EventArgs. Another EDIT: One downside (to me) of the built-in solution is the extra verbosity: public event EventHandler<EventArgs<Foo>> FooChanged; vs. public event EventHandler<Foo> FooChanged; It can be a pain for clients to register for your events though, because the System namespace is imported by default, so they have to manually seek out your namespace, even with a fancy tool like Resharper... Anyone have any ideas pertaining to that?

• Using Fantom USB Driver from JNI

  I'm having some difficulty with JNI. I'm using JNI to call some Java methods from a C++ program. This implementation of JNI is working fine. The goal of the Java program is to send commands over USB to a LEGO robot using LEJOS. This works fine when running the Java program by itself but for some reason when I call the methods from C++ the robot cannot be detected. My only lead so far is that there may be some problem using the Fantom USB driver from a JNI call. This is the driver that's used for the USB connection to the robot. I've had a quick look at the code for the driver and it looks like it makes use of JNI too. So I guess I'm asking the following things: What differences could there be between calling code from JNI and executing it through command prompt with the 'java classname args' method which could cause this problem? Could it be that there is some problem with me using JNI in C++ when the driver that's being used uses JNI as well? I won't post any code just now as I don't think it's really relevant but if anyone thinks that they need to see it then I can add it.

When ResolveAll is public static List<object> ResolveAll(Type t) { return myContainer.ResolveAll(t).ToList(); } I get a ResolutionFailedException with them message "The current type, Infrastructure.Interfaces.IConfigurationVerification`1[Infrastructure.Configuration.IMLogPlayerConfiguration+LoadDefinitions], is an interface and cannot be constructed. • psqlODBC won't load after installing MS SQL ODBC driver on RHEL 6

  I had the PostgreSQL drivers working on my RHEL 6. But after I installed Microsoft® SQL Server® ODBC Driver 1.0 for Linux I can no longer connect to PosgreSQL data sources. I can connect to SQL Server data sources fine. When I had this same issue a week ago I uninstalled MS SQL Server ODBC driver from Linux and it fixed the issue. I had to copy the psqlodbcw.so files from another machine to replenish the files. I don't want to do the same this time. I want both drivers to work on Linux. This time around the setup files got deleted: /usr/lib64/libodbcpsqlS.so. Replenishing it did not fix the issue. • How to repackage NVIDIA .run drivers into .deb with DKMS

  At present, Ubuntu offers the 195.36.24 drivers as nvidia-current in their repository. This packaged driver is pretty cool as it uses DKMS so you don't have to keep reinstalling the driver after a new kernel version. The NVIDIA .run package drivers are at version 257 (beta) but they don't use DKMS so the graphics screws up every time a new kernel is installed and you don't reinstall the driver. How can I modify the .run to use DKMS and even better, package it as a deb package?

• Sniffing LPT Traffic

  I need to intercept LPT output traffic. After a couple of hours of research, I've come to understand that the only way to do this is by writing a kernel-mode driver, more precisely a "filter driver"...? I've downloaded the WDK, but the terminology and vast number of driver types is a little overwhelming. I'm basically trying to understand what kind of driver I should be writing; my target environment is Windows XP SP2 and 3 only. Some background info, if it matters: I have a bunch of legacy DOS apps that print to LPT1. I'd like to be able to capture this output and redirect this data (after GDI calls) to a modern USB (network) printer. Fortunately, the latter part of the problem's easy. I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction. TIA.

  I'm trying to learn about device drivers on Linux Kernel, for that I've created three modules with: A bus type A device driver A fake device that does nothing now, only is registered Everything works fine, I can load the bus, the driver and the module that creates the device. Everything appears on sysfs, including the link between the device and the device driver that indicates that they are binded. • Recommended ways to install USB drivers with a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project?

  I need to install a USB driver with an application, and I'm using a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project to create the installer. The driver only needs to be installed sufficient enough so that when the USB device is plugged in, Windows will go off doing it's "installing device" routine and do the rest of the job. It would be okay also to have the setup finish and then the user connects the device when required with the driver install completing then. However the user shouldn't be prompted to find a driver location. The USB drivers I have are available either as plain .sys / .inf files, or as a full installer (.msi together with a setup.exe wrapper). The full installer deals with combinations of operating systems and languages, but the application is for internal use and I can limit the target OS to Windows XP. Would it be better just to run the available installer via a custom action, or to install via the .inf file somehow (I'm not sure how to do that)?

• Oracle 9i Session Disconnections

  [Cross-Posting from ServerFault] I am in a development environment, and our test Oracle 9i server has been misbehaving for a few days now. What happens is that we have our JDBC connections disconnecting after a few successful connections. We got this box set up by our IT department and handed over to. It is 'our problem', so options like 'ask you DBA' isn't going to help me. :( Our server is set up with 3 plain databases (one is the main dev db, the other is the 'experimental' dev db). We use the Oracle 10 ojdbc14.jar thin JDBC driver (because of some bug in the version 9 of the driver). We're using Hibernate to talk to the DB. The only thing that I can see that changed is that we now have more users connecting to the server. Instead of one developer, we now have 3. With the Hibernate connection pools, I'm thinking that maybe we're hitting some limit? Anyone has any idea what's going on? • Ubuntu 12.10 graphics does not work properly

  My graphic on ubuntu 12.10 does not work as well as on 12.04. After upgrade I installed driver sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current for my Nvidia 450 GTS graphics card. But sometimes I see slight lag on my videos played in VLC player, some of desktop and window effects are lagging, sometimes I can see an indescribable souce of pixels on my screen at the start of ubuntu and so on. I feel difference between 12.04 and 12.10 in favour of former version. • Device driver with generic communication media layer

  Greetings all, I'm trying to implement driver for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our head office. Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that?   I have some logic in a method that operates on a specified type and I'd like to create a generic lambda that encapsulates the logic. This is the spirit of what I'm trying to do: public void DoSomething() { // ... Func<T> GetTypeName = () => T.GetType().Name; GetTypeName<string>(); GetTypeName<DateTime>(); GetTypeName<int>(); // ... } I know I can pass the type as a parameter or create a generic method but I'm interested if it can just be a generic lambda (So I'm not looking for alternatives). From what I can tell C# 3.0 doesn't support this. TIA, m

• Type patterns and generic classes in Haskell

  I'm trying to understand type patterns and generic classes in Haskell but can't seem to get it. Could someone explain it in laymen's terms? In [1] I've read that "To apply functions generically to all data types, we view data types in a uniform manner: except for basic predefined types such as Float, IO, and ?, every Haskell data type can be viewed as a labeled sum of possibly labeled products." and then Unit, :*: and :+: are mentioned. Are all data types in Haskell automatically versions of the above mentioned and if so how do I figure out how a specific data type is represented in terms of :*:, etc? The users guide for generic classes (ch. 7.16) at haskell.org doesn't mention the predefined types but shouldn't they be handled in every function if the type patterns should be exhaustive? • Pass a captured named regular expression to URL dictionary in generic view

  I am working with a generic view in Django. I want to capture a named group parameter in the URL and pass the value to the URL pattern dictionary. For example, in the URLConf below, I want to capture the parent_slug value in the URL and pass it to the queryset dictionary value like so: urlpatterns = patterns('django.views.generic.list_detail', (r'^(?P<parent_slugs>[-\w])$', 'object_list', {'queryset':Promotion.objects.filter(category=parent_slug)}, 'promo_promotion_list'), ) Is this possible to do in one URLConf entry, or would it be wiser if I create a custom view to capture the value and pass the queryset directly to the generic view from my overridden view?

• How to invoke a method with a generic return type using reflection

  Hi there! I'm trying to invoke a method with reflection that has a generic return type, like this: public class SomeClass<T> { public List<T> GetStuff(); } I get an instance of SomeClass with a call to a Repository's GetClass<T> generic method. MethodInfo lGetSomeClassMethodInfo = typeof(IRepository) .GetMethod("GetClass") .MakeGenericMethod(typeof(SomeClass<>); object lSomeClassInstance = lGetSomeClassMethodInfo.Invoke( lRepositoryInstance, null); After that, I this is where I try to invoke the GetStuff method: typeof(SomeClass<>).GetMethod("GetStuff").Invoke(lSomeClassInstance, null) I get an exception about the fact that the method has generic arguments. However, I can't use MakeGenericMethod to resolve the return type. Also, if instead of typeof(SomeClass<>) I use lSomeClassInstance.GetType() (which should have resolved types) GetMethod("GetStuff") returns null! UPDATE I have found the solution and will post the answer shortly.

  A generic method is defined as follows: private static T GetComparisonObject<T>(ComparisonAttribute attribute, object objectToParse) { // Perform a some action return (T)resultObject; } The method is invoked as follows: var srcObjectToCompare = GetComparisonObject<DynamicType>(attributeToCompare, srcObject); The type for which the method needs to be invoked is configured in the config file as: <add attributename ="Count" attributetype ="MemberInformation" attributeparam ="Count" type="System.Int32" comparertype="ditCreditEMGTestAutomationDifferenceEngine.Comparers.TypeComparer, ditCreditEMGTestAutomationDifferenceEngine.dll" /> The token that is passed in < for the generic methods has to be the type for which the method is being invoked. From the type key configuration in the XML, an instance of Type represnting the type can be created{i.e. Type.GetType("System.Int32")}, but how can the Type Definition be generated which can then be passed to the the Generic method? Hope am not missing something elementary here!! :-O Thanks in advance.
