  • HTG Explains: What are Shadow Copies and How Can I Use Them to Copy or Backup Locked Files?

    - by Jason Faulkner
When trying to create simple file copy backups in Windows, a common problem is locked files which can trip up the operation. Whether the file is currently opened by the user or locked by the OS itself, certain files have to be completely unused in order to be copied. Thankfully, there is a simple solution: Shadow Copies. Using our simple tool, you can easily access shadow copies which allows access to point-in-time copies of the currently locked files as created by Windows Restore. • Mobile Game Engine

    - by Jason Crosby
I am trying to track down a game engine for developing mobile games for ios and android. I have been looking for weeks now and havent found what i am looking for. I like jmonkey engine for making desktop games. Its easy to use and it comes with everything you need. Its more that just some libraries. I'm looking for something similar for developing mobile games. I'd like it to be easy to use and have everything included not just a collection of libraries. And I would prefer to write in c++. I'm not looking for "the best". I'm just looking for some engines that match my criteria so I can try them out and see which one works best for me.

  • 12.04: I need a new network card - and I think this one may work?

    - by Jason Malone
I found this list of compatible USB wireless network adaptors: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-usb-wireless-compatibility-adapter-list.html Listed here is the Belkin F5D8053. I'm looking for a store to buy a suitable adaptor in locally and I can't find that particular adaptor - but I can see a Belkin F7D4101az. I think this is simply a newer model - but a Google search for "ubuntu belkin f7d4101az" brings no results - not even people trying to get it to work. Nothing. So I didn't want to purchase it without being sure. There's really only one PC shop that sells this sort of stuff around here - so here's a list of all my available options: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/wireless-cards-adapters/xx_7088_70095_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html I'd really like to get one today, because I have a lot of work to do and don't really want to have to wait a week for a new adaptor - I spent 6 or 7 hours last night trying to get my Dell 1450 to work with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

Possible Duplicate: Will there be data loss for upgrade? Can we upgrade a previous version of ubuntu to the latest version without losing data ? (For example, will I be able to upgrade the 10.10 version to 11.04, which is due to be released in April of 2011?) I mean, there is a new version coming out every 6 months, so it will be convenient if we are able to upgrade without losing on the data .

  • Generate Unique Abstract Backgrounds with Ablaze

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you want custom and unique backgrounds without having to code your own image-generating engine, Ablaze makes it simple (and fun) to create abstract images. You can customize a wide array of options in Ablaze including the base shape (ring, horizontal line, or random), number of particles, distance each particle travels, and the speed (if you increase the speed range you get more distinct lines and if you decrease it you get smoother smokier shapes). You can also seed the design with a color palette pulled from any image you provide (the sample above was seeded with a Wonder Woman comic panel). Tweak and reset the pattern generation as much as you want; when you create an abstract image worthy of your desktop just click the save button to grab a copy of it in PNG format. • How to run a bootable USB drive as my primary PC for an extended period?

    - by jason
My hard drive has crashed, and I won't be able to buy a new one for a month or two. I've got a 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive that I'd like to have running a persistent ubuntu or ubuntu gnome distro. While it's not the best solution, is it a solution, or is it just a good way to wear out a flash drive? I plan on mostly storing things in Google Drive, so other than wearing out the flash drive, are there any risks involved?

  • DropVox Records Voice Memos Right to Your Dropbox Account

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
DropVox is a clever and highly specialized application that, quite effectively, turns your iOS device into a voice recorder with Dropbox-based storage. Install the app, launch it, hit the record button, and your recording is uploaded to your Dropbox account in .m4a format as soon as you’re finished creating it. You can also configure DropVox to start recording immediately after launch and to continue recording if the device is locked or other applications are in use. Hit up the link to grab a copy. DropVox is currently $0.99 (50% off for a limited time) and works on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch with microphone attached. • Sound not working

    - by Jason
I am new to ubuntu, but really enjoy it. I do have one issue with setting it up on my computer. It is a GoBook XR-1 and everything works perfectly except there is no sound. I've searched and tried everything that I can think of, even uninstalling ubuntu and trying Windows to see if the speakers worked. I found out that it wasn't the speakers or any hardware issues. I tried to download the Realtek drivers, but still no success.

  • Ways to earn money through programming and/or programming knowledge [closed]

    - by Jason Swett
It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

  • Clear float issue

    - by Jason
I have a page with the standard navigation bar on the left and the content area taking up the rest of the horizontal area to its side. For modern browsers I am using table-row and table-cell values for the display attribute. However, for IE7 I included a conditional stylesheet that tries to float the nav bar. This works fine except when the content area itself has floated elements and I try to use clear. My goal is to displayed the clear element right after the content area floats but instead it gets shoved down below the nav area. The following demo code shows this issue. My goal is to get the table to display right below the "leftThing" and "rightThing" but instead there is a large gap between them and the table. <html> <head> <title>Float Test</title> <style type="text/css"> #body { background: #cecece; } #sidebar { background: #ababab; float: left; width: 200px; } #content { background: #efefef; margin-left: 215px; } #leftThing { background: #456789; float: left; width: 100px; } #rightThing { background: #654321; float: right; width: 100px; } table { clear: both; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="body"> <div id="sidebar"> <ul> <li>One</li> <li>Two</li> <li>Three</li> </ul> </div> <div id="content"> <div style="position: realtive;"> <div id="leftThing"> ABCDEF </div> <div id="rightThing"> WXYZ </div> <table> <thead> <th>One</th> <th>Two</th> </thead> <tr> <td>Jason</td> <td>45</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Mary</td> <td>41</td> </tr> </table> <p>Exerci ullamcorper consequat duis ipsum ut nostrud zzril, feugait feugiat duis dolor feugiat commodo, accumsan, duis illum eum molestie luptatum nisl iusto. • Clear all class variables between instances

    - by ensnare
This is probably a stupid question, but what's the best way to clear class variables between instances? I know I could reset each variable individually in the constructor; but is there a way to do this in bulk? Or am I doing something totally wrong that requires a different approach? Thanks for helping ... class User(): def __init__(self): #RESET ALL CLASS VARIABLES def commit(self): #Commit variables to database >>u = User() >>u.name = 'Jason' >>u.email = 'jason[email protected]' >>u.commit() So that each time User is called the variables are fresh. Thanks.

  • Create a Python User() class that both creates new users and modifies existing users

    - by ensnare
    I'm trying to figure out the best way to create a class that can modify and create new users all in one. This is what I'm thinking: class User(object): def __init__(self,user_id): if user_id == -1 self.new_user = True else: self.new_user = False #fetch all records from db about user_id self._populateUser() def commit(self): if self.new_user: #Do INSERTs else: #Do UPDATEs def delete(self): if self.new_user == False: return False #Delete user code here def _populate(self): #Query self.user_id from database and #set all instance variables, e.g. #self.name = row['name'] def getFullName(self): return self.name #Create a new user >>u = User() >>u.name = 'Jason Martinez' >>u.password = 'linebreak' >>u.commit() >>print u.getFullName() >>Jason Martinez #Update existing user >>u = User(43) >>u.name = 'New Name Here' >>u.commit() >>print u.getFullName() >>New Name Here Is this a logical and clean way to do this? Is there a better way? Thanks.

  • Django + dbxml + Apache = problems. Any solutions?

    - by Jason
I'm trying to set up a Django application using WSGI. That works fine. However, I am having some issues with part of my Django app that uses BDB XML. My Apache config is as follows: Listen 8000 WSGISocketPrefix /tmp/wsgi <VirtualHost *:8000> ServerName <server name> DocumentRoot <path to doc root> LogLevel info WSGIScriptAlias / <path to wsgi> WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL} WSGIDaemonProcess debug threads=1 WSGIProcessGroup debug </VirtualHost> However, I'm still getting the following error: DB_ENV->repmgr_stat interface requires an environment configured for the replication subsystem [error] child died with signal 11 My environment is opened as: environment = DBEnv() environment.open( <absolute db env path>, DB_CREATE|DB_INIT_LOCK|DB_INIT_LOG|DB_INIT_MPOOL, 0 ) I am using: python 2.6.2 apache 2.2 ubuntu 9.04 dbxml 2.5.13 compiled from source (so libdb-4.8, bsddb3, all that jazz) I see Apache seems to link to libdb-4.6. • SQLAuthority News – SafePeak’s SQL Server Performance Contest – Winners

    - by pinaldave
SafePeak, the unique automated SQL performance acceleration and performance tuning software vendor, announced the winners of their SQL Performance Contest 2011. The contest quite unique: the writer of the best / most interesting and most community liked “performance story” would win an expensive gadget. The judges were the community DBAs that could participating and Like’ing stories and could also win expensive prizes. Robert Pearl SQL MVP, was the contest supervisor. I liked most of the stories and decided then to contact SafePeak and suggested to participate in the give-away and they have gladly accepted the same. The winner of best story is: Jason Brimhall (USA) with a story about a proc with a fair amount of business logic. Congratulations Jason! The 3 participants won the second prize of $100 gift card on amazon.com are: Michael Corey (USA), Hakim Ali (USA) and Alex Bernal (USA). And 5 participants won a printed copy of a book of mine (Book Reviews of SQL Wait Stats Joes 2 Pros: SQL Performance Tuning Techniques Using Wait Statistics, Types & Queues) are: Patrick Kansa (USA), Wagner Bianchi (USA), Riyas.V.K (India), Farzana Patwa (USA) and Wagner Crivelini (Brazil). The winners are welcome to send safepeak their mail address to receive the prizes (to “info ‘at’ safepeak.com”). Also SafePeak team asked me to welcome you all to continue sending stories, simply because they (and we all) like to read interesting stuff) as well as to send them ideas for future contests. You can do it from here: www.safepeak.com/SQL-Performance-Contest-2011/Submit-Story Congratulations to everybody! I found this very funny video about SafePeak: It looks like someone (maybe the vendor) played with video’s once and created this non-commercial like video: SafePeak dynamic caching is an immediate plug-n-play performance acceleration and scalability solution for cloud, hosted and business SQL server applications. By caching in memory result sets of queries and stored procedures, while keeping all those cache correct and up to date using unique patent pending technology, SafePeak can fix SQL performance problems and bottlenecks of most applications – most importantly: without actual code changes. By the way, I checked their website prior this contest announcement and noticed that they are running these days a special end year promotion giving between 30% to 45% discounts. Since the installation is quick and full testing can be done within couple of days – those have the need (performance problems) and have budget leftovers: I suggest you hurry. A free fully functional trial is here: www.safepeak.com/download, while those that want to start with a quote should ping here www.safepeak.com/quote. Good luck! • One National Team One Event &ndash; SharePoint Saturday Kansas City

    - by MOSSLover
I wasn’t expect to run an event from 1,000 miles away, but some stuff happened you know like it does and I opted in.  It was really weird, because people asked why are you living in NJ and running Kansas City?  I did move, but it was like my baby and Karthik didn’t have the ability to do it this year.  I found it really challenging, because I could not physically be in Kansas City.  At first I was freaking out and Lee Brandt, Brian Laird, and Chris Geier offered to help.  Somehow I couldn’t come the day of the event.  Time-wise it just didn’t work out.  I could do all the leg work prior to the event, but weekends just were not good.  I was going to be in DC until March or April on the weekdays, so leaving that weekend was too tough.  As it worked out Lee was my eyes and ears for the venue.  Brian was the sponsor and prize box coordinator if anyone needed to send items.  Lee also helped Brian the day of the event move all the boxes.  I did everything we could do electronically, such as get the sponsors coordinate with Michael Lotter on invoicing and getting the speakers, posting the submissions, budgeting the money, setting up a speaker dinner by phone, plus all that other stuff you do behind the scenes.  Chris was there to help Lee and Brian the day of the event and help us out with the speaker dinner.  Karthik finally got back from India and he was there the night before getting the folders together and the signs and stuffing it all.  Jason Gallicchio also helped me out (my cohort for SPS NYC) as he did the schedule and helped with posting the speakers abstracts and so did Chris Geier by posting the bios.  The lot of them enlisted a few other monkeys to help out.  It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen, but it worked.  Around 100+ attendees ended up showing and I hear it was  a great event.  Jason, Michael, Chris, Karthik, Brian, and Lee are not all from the same area, but they helped me out in bringing this event together.  It was a national SharePoint Saturday team that brought together a specific local event for Kansas City.  It’s like a metaphor for the entire SharePoint Community.  We help our own kind out we don’t let me fail.  I know Lee and Brian aren’t technically SharePoint People they are honorary SharePoint Community Members.  Thanks everyone for the support and help in bringing this event together.  Technorati Tags: SharePoint Saturday,SPS KC,SharePoint,SharePoint Saturday Kanas City,Kansas City

  • Good practices - database programming, unit testing

    - by Piotr Rodak
Jason Brimhal wrote today on his blog that new book, Defensive Database Programming , written by Alex Kuznetsov ( blog ) is coming to bookstores. Alex writes about various techniques that make your code safer to run. SQL injection is not the only one vulnerability the code may be exposed to. Some other include inconsistent search patterns, unsupported character sets, locale settings, issues that may occur during high concurrency conditions, logic that breaks when certain conditions are not met. • Silverlight Cream for May 25, 2010 - 2 -- #870

    - by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Kirupa, Matthias Shapiro(-2-, -3-), Giorgetti Alessandro, Kunal Chowdhury, Mike Snow, and Jason Zander. Shoutout: This looks like a really nice WP7 app done by a team of folks for Imagine Cup 2010: Ahead ... I hope to see some blog posts and code on this! From SilverlightCream.com, and remember you can send me a link to your post or submit at SilverlightCream.com: Control Storyboards Easily using Behaviors Kirupa is following through on a promise to discuss the Behaviors that come on-board Blend. He's starting with two to help deal with Storyboards: ControlStoryboardAction and the StoryboardCompletedTrigger. PHP, MySQL and Silverlight: The Complete Tutorial (Part 1) Matthias Shapiro has a 3-parter up on PHP, MySQL, and Silverlight -- wondered how I missed this first one until I realized they all posted in 2 days... this first post sets up the MySQL database to be used. PHP, MySQL, and Silverlight: The Complete Tutorial (Part 2) In part 2, Matthias Shapiro writes a PHP web service that grabs the data from the database and sends it in JSON format to the Silverlight app (see part 3). PHP, MySQL, and Silverlight: The Complete Tutorial (Part 3) Matthias Shapiro's part 3 is the Silverlight part that reads the JSON produced by the PHP webservice from Part 2, to provide display and edits of the data... and this whole series includes source. Silverlight: adding an IsEditing property to the DataForm Giorgetti Alessandro laments the lack of an IsEditing property in the DataForm, then goes on to demonstrate his path to a suitable workaround. Step-by-Step Command Binding in Silverlight 4 Kunal Chowdhury has a nicely-detailed post on Command Binding in Silverlight 4 and builds up a demo MVVM app in the process... source project included. Silverlight Tip of the Day #24 – Resolving Unknown Objects in VS I'm not sure I would call Mike Snow's latest Silverlight Tip 'Silverlight' ... but if you don't know it, you need to. Sample: Windows Phone 7 Example Application with Landscape Layout Whoa... check out the WP7 app Jason Zander did with landscape mode defined... you're going to want to refer back to this one... • Why We Write #6-An Interview with Kevin Kline

    - by drsql
Wow, so far in this series, I have interviewed some very good friends, and some truly excellent writers (and usually both), but today, following on the heels of Jason Strate , we are going to hit someone whose name is synonymous with community, a person who really needs no introduction. According to Bing, Kevin Kline ( @kekline ) is the most important Kevin Kline on Twitter (though it clearly could be due to my typical searches, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt… here try it yourself: http://www.bing.com/search?q=kevin+kline+twitter...(read more)
