  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS vs Ubuntu 14.04 LTS memory usage

    - by geoffroy
My droplet has 512 MB memory and is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bits and a Rails 4 application + several workers. It's running well. I tried to deploy the same thing on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bits droplet and I've got plenty of memory related problem (can't fork). Is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS using way more RAM than Ubuntu 12.04 LTS? Is there something I should know to lower memory usage ? Should I stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

Hi, I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and seeing the following behaviors: The system hangs after a while and becomes completely unresponsive. The system sometimes restarts itself ! Can you please help me identify what is the problem? Also please mention where should I look for the possible cause of this error. Thanks. • Amazon EC2 High-Memory Extra Large Instance

    - by Simpanoz
I am new to Mongodb and EC2. If I use following single MongoDb server : High-Memory Extra Large Instance 17.1 GiB memory, 6.5 ECU (2 virtual cores with 3.25 EC2 Compute Units each), 420 GB of local instance storage, 64-bit platform As a layman, if we quantify I/O, data in MB/sec. How much I/O transactions mongodb server can handle easily, without being burnt out. Consider default settings of EC2 server with Ubuntu and MongoDb version available in AWS marketplace. Thanks in advance

  • Make the middle mouse button behave as a double-click in Windows 7?

    - by Geoff Olynyk
What is the best, lightest-weight way to make the middle mouse button (i.e. clicking the scroll wheel) behave as a double-left-click in Windows 7? I want this to be universal, so that other programs don't ever see the middle-click, they just see a double-left-click. I used to do it under Windows XP with Logitech SetPoint drivers but it was always an ugly solution - installing a huge ( 50 MB!) binary just to enable one simple little bit of functionality.

  • SAS Expanders vs Direct Attached (SAS)?

    - by jemmille
I have a storage unit with 2 backplanes. One backplane holds 24 disks, one backplane holds 12 disks. Each backplane is independently connected to a SFF-8087 port (4 channel/12Gbit) to the raid card. Here is where my question really comes in. Can or how easily can a backplane be overloaded? All the disks in the machine are WD RE4 WD1003FBYX (black) drives that have average writes at 115MB/sec and average read of 125 MB/sec I know things would vary based on the raid or filesystem we put on top of that but it seems to be that a 24 disk backplane with only one SFF-8087 connector should be able to overload the bus to a point that might actually slow it down? Based on my math, if I had a RAID0 across all 24 disks and asked for a large file, I should, in theory should get 24*115 MB/sec wich translates to 22.08 GBit/sec of total throughput. Either I'm confused or this backplane is horribly designed, at least in a perfomance environment. I'm looking at switching to a model where each drive has it's own channel from the backplane (and new HBA's or raid card). • How can I connect to a mail server using SMTP over SSL using Python?

    - by jakecar
Hello, So I have been having a hard time sending email from my school's email address. It is SSL and I could only find this code online by Matt Butcher that works with SSL: import smtplib, socket version = "1.00" all = ['SMTPSSLException', 'SMTP_SSL'] SSMTP_PORT = 465 class SMTPSSLException(smtplib.SMTPException): """Base class for exceptions resulting from SSL negotiation.""" class SMTP_SSL (smtplib.SMTP): """This class provides SSL access to an SMTP server. SMTP over SSL typical listens on port 465. Unlike StartTLS, SMTP over SSL makes an SSL connection before doing a helo/ehlo. All transactions, then, are done over an encrypted channel. This class is a simple subclass of the smtplib.SMTP class that comes with Python. It overrides the connect() method to use an SSL socket, and it overrides the starttles() function to throw an error (you can't do starttls within an SSL session). """ certfile = None keyfile = None def __init__(self, host='', port=0, local_hostname=None, keyfile=None, certfile=None): """Initialize a new SSL SMTP object. If specified, `host' is the name of the remote host to which this object will connect. If specified, `port' specifies the port (on `host') to which this object will connect. `local_hostname' is the name of the localhost. By default, the value of socket.getfqdn() is used. An SMTPConnectError is raised if the SMTP host does not respond correctly. An SMTPSSLError is raised if SSL negotiation fails. Warning: This object uses socket.ssl(), which does not do client-side verification of the server's cert. """ self.certfile = certfile self.keyfile = keyfile smtplib.SMTP.__init__(self, host, port, local_hostname) def connect(self, host='localhost', port=0): """Connect to an SMTP server using SSL. `host' is localhost by default. Port will be set to 465 (the default SSL SMTP port) if no port is specified. If the host name ends with a colon (`:') followed by a number, that suffix will be stripped off and the number interpreted as the port number to use. This will override the `port' parameter. Note: This method is automatically invoked by __init__, if a host is specified during instantiation. """ # MB: Most of this (Except for the socket connection code) is from # the SMTP.connect() method. I changed only the bare minimum for the # sake of compatibility. if not port and (host.find(':') == host.rfind(':')): i = host.rfind(':') if i >= 0: host, port = host[:i], host[i+1:] try: port = int(port) except ValueError: raise socket.error, "nonnumeric port" if not port: port = SSMTP_PORT if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, 'connect:', (host, port) msg = "getaddrinfo returns an empty list" self.sock = None for res in socket.getaddrinfo(host, port, 0, socket.SOCK_STREAM): af, socktype, proto, canonname, sa = res try: self.sock = socket.socket(af, socktype, proto) if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, 'connect:', (host, port) self.sock.connect(sa) # MB: Make the SSL connection. sslobj = socket.ssl(self.sock, self.keyfile, self.certfile) except socket.error, msg: if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, 'connect fail:', (host, port) if self.sock: self.sock.close() self.sock = None continue break if not self.sock: raise socket.error, msg # MB: Now set up fake socket and fake file classes. # Thanks to the design of smtplib, this is all we need to do # to get SSL working with all other methods. self.sock = smtplib.SSLFakeSocket(self.sock, sslobj) self.file = smtplib.SSLFakeFile(sslobj); (code, msg) = self.getreply() if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, "connect:", msg return (code, msg) def setkeyfile(self, keyfile): """Set the absolute path to a file containing a private key. I have vinyl record rip in 24/96 flac format. Each track is almost 200 MB big, so the album won't fit on CD. How to burn these files on a DVD to play with the same quality on standalone DVD player? My player supports SACD, DVD Audio and DVD video as well. My OS is Ubuntu Lucid (preferred), but I have also WinXp with Nero installed. BTW, is there any difference between DVD+ and DVD- for audio?

  • ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe - 1 long and 2 short beeps

    - by Agares
Hi! I bought Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe. When I put my stuff(all is 100% working): Athlon 4450e 2GB RAM GoodRAM 667MHz(It's polish brand, maybe not popular in other countries) Sapphire Radeon HD2600(I tried replacing it with S3 Trio PCI) with it I heard just 1 long and 2 short beeps. It changes only, when I run MB without processor - then computer run for few seconds and powers off. What's the problem?

  • Recover an HP recovery partition from an offline drive

    - by eric.chartier
I have a (semi)-dead hard drive with an HP recovery partition on it. My goal is to 1-Buy a new hard drive (checked) 2-Copy the recovery partition to a drive ( dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=~/recovery.bak ) 3-Make a new partition of 12000 mb with Windows 7 4-Copy back recovery partition to the new drive ( dd if=~/recovery.bak of=/dev/sdb1 ) Then press F11 when the laptop boots however it does NOT work. Any idea why? It seemed quite fool proof...

  • Use DivX settings to encode to mp4 with ffmpeg

    - by sjngm
I'm used to use VirtualDub to encode a video to AVI container with DivX-codec (and MP3 for audio). Now I'm planning to use ffmpeg to encode videos to MP4 container with h264-codec. What I've figured out is that I need to use libx264 and one of those presets to make anything work. However, I'm amazed about the video bitrate ffmpeg uses for encoding. What I currently have is this little batch file: @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL SET IN=source.avs SET FFMPEG_PATH=C:\Program Files (x86)\ffmpeg SET PRESET=-fpre "%FFMPEG_PATH%\presets\libx264-lossless_slow.ffpreset" SET AUDIO=-acodec libmp3lame -ab 128000 SET VIDEO=-vcodec libx264 -vb 1978000 "%FFMPEG_PATH%\ffmpeg.exe" -i %IN% %AUDIO% %VIDEO% %PRESET% test.mp4 ENDLOCAL With this I tell ffmpeg to use 1978k as the bitrate, but ffmpeg uses 15000k+! I tried other presets, but they don't use my specified bitrate. Here are the presets I have: libx264-baseline.ffpreset libx264-ipod320.ffpreset libx264-ipod640.ffpreset libx264-lossless_fast.ffpreset libx264-lossless_max.ffpreset libx264-lossless_medium.ffpreset libx264-lossless_slow.ffpreset libx264-lossless_slower.ffpreset libx264-lossless_ultrafast.ffpreset ffmpeg version: FFmpeg git-N-29181-ga304071 libavutil 50. 40. 1 / 50. 40. 1 libavcodec 52.120. 0 / 52.120. 0 libavformat 52.108. 0 / 52.108. 0 libavdevice 52. 4. 0 / 52. 4. 0 libavfilter 1. 79. 0 / 1. 79. 0 libswscale 0. 13. 0 / 0. 13. 0 Note that I don't use the latest version as it has problems with spaces in filenames. Here's what seems to be the full parameter list DivX 6.9.2 uses: -bvnn 1978000 -vbv 218691200,100663296,100663296 -dir "C:\Users\sjngm\AppData\Roaming\DivX\DivX Codec" -w -b 1 -use_presets=1 -preset=10 -windowed_fullsearch=2 -thread_delay=1 What command line parameters would that be for ffmpeg? EDIT: Going with slhck's suggestion I tried a new 32-bit version. I have no idea if that is 0.9 or newer, I can't find that info. ffmpeg version N-36890-g67f5650 libavutil 51. 34.100 / 51. 34.100 libavcodec 53. 56.105 / 53. 56.105 libavformat 53. 30.100 / 53. 30.100 libavdevice 53. 4.100 / 53. 4.100 libavfilter 2. 59.100 / 2. 59.100 libswscale 2. 1.100 / 2. 1.100 libswresample 0. 6.100 / 0. 6.100 libpostproc 51. 2.100 / 51. 2.100 I reworked my batch file to look like this (interestingly enough I can't find parameter -vprofile in the documentation): @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL SET IN=VTS_01_1.avs SET FFMPEG_PATH=C:\Program Files (x86)\ffmpeg SET PRESET=-vprofile high -preset veryslow SET AUDIO=-acodec libmp3lame -ab 128000 SET VIDEO=-vcodec libx264 -vb 1978000 "%FFMPEG_PATH%\ffmpeg.exe" -i %IN% %AUDIO% %PRESET% %VIDEO% test.mp4 ENDLOCAL I see that it now uses the bitrate properly (thanks to LongNeckbeard for pointing out that the lossless-stuff ignores the bitrate!). Just in case you wonder how I came up with the 1978000, I'm using this formula which I found valid for DivX-files (I'm guessing the bitrate won't change that much for h264): width * height * 25 * 0.22 / 1000 I'm not sure if the 0.22 correlates with the CRF somehow. Overall I forgot to say the I will use a two-pass scenario, which is why I don't use the CRF here. I will try to read more about this. Currently I'm just trying to get something running that shows me that I'm doing something right (ffmpeg isn't the easiest tool to understand ;)). • Looking for old version of JBuilder

    - by mtgrares
I'm looking for any of these versions:JBuilder 3-9. The reason for this is because my computer is old (256 MB, 800 Mhz cpu) but I still like to program. (Yes, I should upgrade my computer but greenbacks don't grow on trees.) And to prove that I really do program, I have an open source project where you play the trading card game Magic: The Gathering against the computer, http://code.google.com/p/cardforge The latest version was downloaded 1,862 times. Thanks for your time, mtgrares

  • Video memory buswidth vs video memory Bandwidth

    - by Mixxiphoid
My current video card (9600GT) is dying and I'm searching for a new video card. Between acquiring my current one and now, I got a lot more knowledge about hardware and I want to use that to pick my new card. So I decided to not just buy some popular card blindly, but to search for a card able to handle my hardware requirements. I searched the specs at the NVidia site for the GT640 and was confused by the memory section and some questions raised. My current card's memory bus width is 256bit and has 1GB of memory. I checked Google about the importance of bus width. And all the links basically said the same 'The higher the number the more potential simultaneously traffic can be transferred'. This was already clear to me, yet there are currently a lot of new cards which are considered better than my current one with a lower bus width. To go in more detail about my question I copied the memory info from the NVidia site: GT 640 GT640 GDDR5 Memory Specs: Memory Clock 1.8 Gbps 5.0 Gbps Standard Memory Config 2048 MB 1024 MB Memory Interface DDR3 GDDR5 Memory Interface Width 128-bit 64-bit Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) 28.5 40.0 What puzzled me is that the Memory Bandwidth seems to me the most important part, yet the lower bus width has the higher 'performance'. Is this due to the fact the memory interface is GDDR5 and is therefore able to have a higher memory clock speed (5Gbps)? If I am to buy a new video card, should I check the bus width? Memory clock? Bandwith? Amount of memory? My current card ahs 1GB memory, so I was searching for a 2GB memory card, but now I'm not so sure any more whether that is really 'better'. My main question: To me it seems that memory performance is made up by the combination of bus width and frequency. Is this true? If yes, why are there so many sites telling me I need to get a card with a high bus width? If no, then what IS important when it goes about memory performance on a video card. NOTE: The memory bandwidth is (almost) never displayed on vendor sites. How can I determine which card is better without knowing the bandwith?

  • pptpd configuration

    - by Ian R.
    I would like a little help on configuring pptp so I can use my server as a vpn server since I have 10 ip's on it and I travel a lot so that would really help me and my partners. I managed to install everything needed but my vpn client fails to connect due to some reason that I cannot understand. I know there are 2 files in pptp that you're supposed to edit so I will post my 2 files here: /etc/ppp/pptpd-options name pptpd refuse-pap refuse-chap refuse-mschap require-mschap-v2 require-mppe-128 proxyarp nodefaultroute lock nobsdcomp /etc/pptpd.conf option /etc/ppp/pptpd-options logwtmp localip xx.158.177.231 remoteip xx.158.177.103,xx.158.177.116,xx.158.177.121,xx.158.177.124,xx.158.177.125,xx.158.177.131,xx.158.177.134,xx.158.177.139,xx.158.177.142,xx.158.177.145 interfaces file eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.231 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 inet6 addr: xx80::216:3eff:fe51:31ba/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:56352 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:3xx15 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:4884030 (4.8 MB) TX bytes:6780974 (6.7 MB) Interrupt:16 eth0:1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.103 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.116 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:3 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.121 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:4 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.124 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:5 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.125 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:6 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.131 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:7 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.134 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:8 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.139 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.142 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:10 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.145 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:286 (286.0 B) TX bytes:286 (286.0 B)
