  • Best practices concerning view model and model updates with a subset of the fields

    - by Martin
    By picking MVC for developing our new site, I find myself in the midst of "best practices" being developed around me in apparent real time. Two weeks ago, NerdDinner was my guide but with the development of MVC 2, even it seems outdated. It's an thrilling experience and I feel privileged to be in close contact with intelligent programmers daily. Right now I've stumbled upon an issue I can't seem to get a straight answer on - from all the blogs anyway - and I'd like to get some insight from the community. It's about Editing (read: Edit action). The bulk of material out there, tutorials and blogs, deal with creating and view the model. So while this question may not spell out a question, I hope to get some discussion going, contributing to my decision about the path of development I'm to take. My model represents a user with several fields like name, address and email. All the names, in fact, on field each for first name, last name and middle name. The Details view displays all these fields but you can change only one set of fields at a time, for instance, your names. The user expands a form while the other fields are still visible above and below. So the form that is posted back contains a subset of the fields representing the model. While this is appealing to us and our layout concerns, for various reasons, it is to be shunned by serious MVC-developers. I've been reading about some patterns and best practices and it seems that this is not in key with the paradigm of viewmodel == view. Or have I got it wrong? Anyway, NerdDinner dictates using FormCollection och UpdateModel. All the null fields are happily ignored. Since then, the MVC-community has abandoned this approach to such a degree that a bug in MVC 2 was not discovered. UpdateModel does not work without a complete model in your formcollection. The view model pattern receiving most praise seems to be Dedicated view model that contains a custom view model entity and is the only one that my design issue could be made compatible with. It entails a tedious amount of mapping, albeit lightened by the use of AutoMapper and the ideas of Jimmy Bogard, that may or may not be worthwhile. He also proposes a 1:1 relationship between view and view model. In keeping with these design paradigms, I am to create a view and associated view for each of my expanding sets of fields. The view models would each be nearly identical, differing only in the fields which are read-only, the views also containing much repeated markup. This seems absurd to me. In future I may want to be able to display two, more or all sets of fields open simultaneously. I will most attentively read the discussion I hope to spark. Many thanks in advance.

  • HtmlHelperExtensions are not visible in view mvc3 asp.net

    - by user1299372
    I've added a class for the HTML Custom Extensions: using System; using System.Linq.Expressions; using System.Text; using System.Web.Mvc; using System.Web.Mvc.Html; namespace App.MvcHtmlHelpers { public static class HtmlHelperExtensions { public static MvcHtmlString ComboBox(HtmlHelper html, string name, SelectList items, string selectedValue) { var sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.Append(html.DropDownList(name + "_hidden", items, new { @style = "width: 200px;", @onchange = "$('input#" + name + "').val($(this).val());" })); sb.Append(html.TextBox(name, selectedValue, new { @style = "margin-left: -199px; width: 179px; height: 1.2em; border: 0;" })); return MvcHtmlString.Create(sb.ToString()); } public static MvcHtmlString ComboBoxFor<TModel, TProperty>(HtmlHelper<TModel> html, Expression<Func<TModel, TProperty>> expression, SelectList items) { var me = (MemberExpression)expression.Body; var name = me.Member.Name; var sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.Append(html.DropDownList(name + "_hidden", items, new { @style = "width: 200px;", @onchange = "$('input#" + name + "').val($(this).val());" })); sb.Append(html.TextBoxFor(expression, new { @style = "margin-left: -199px; width: 179px; height: 1.2em; border: 0;" })); return MvcHtmlString.Create(sb.ToString()); } I've also registered it in my site web config: <namespaces> <add namespace="System.Web.Helpers" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Ajax" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Html" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Routing" /> <add namespace="System.Web.WebPages" /> <add namespace="App.MvcHtmlHelpers"/> </namespaces> In my view, I import the namespace: <%@ Import Namespace="RSPWebApp.MvcHtmlHelpers" %> But when I go to call it in the view, it doesn't recognize the custom extension. Can someone help me by telling me what I might have missed? Thanks so much in advance! <%:Html.ComboBoxFor(a => a.Street2, streetAddressListItems) %

  • Code snippets for ASP.NET MVC2 in VS 2010

    - by rajbk
    VS 2010 comes with ready made snippets which helps you save time while coding. You insert a snippet by typing the name of the code snippet and hitting the Tab key twice. You can also use the following method if you wish to see a listing of snippets available. Press Ctrl + K, Ctrl + X Select ASP.NET MVC2 with the arrow keys and hit enter to see a list of snippets available.   The MVC related snippets you get out of the box (for C#) are listed below: HTML actionlink Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC action link helper <%= Html.ActionLink("linktext", "actionname") %>   beginformajaxcs Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC AJAX-enabled form helper in C# <% using (Ajax.BeginForm("actionname", new AjaxOptions {UpdateTargetId= "elementid" })) { %> <% } %>   beginformcs Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC form helper in C# <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <% } %>   displayforcs Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC templated helper. <%= Html.DisplayFor(x => x.Property) %>   editorforcs Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC templated helper. <%= Html.EditorFor(x => x.Property) %>   foreachcs Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC foreach statement in C# <% foreach (var item in collection) { %> <% } %>   ifcs Markup snippet for a code-nugget if else statement in C# <% if (true) { %> <% } %>   ifelsecs Markup snippet for a code-nugget if else statement in C# <% if (true) { %> <% } else { %> <% } %>   renderpartialcs Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC partial view rendering in C# <% Html.RenderPartial("viewname"); %>   textboxmvc Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC textbox helper <%= Html.TextBox("name") %>   validationsummarymvc Markup snippet for an ASP.NET MVC validation summary helper <%= Html.ValidationSummary() %> CS mvcaction Code snippet for an action. public ActionResult Action() {     return View(); }   mvcpostaction Code snippet for an action via http post. • Does my use of the strategy pattern violate the fundamental MVC pattern in iOS?

    - by Goodsquirrel
    I'm about to use the 'strategy' pattern in my iOS app, but feel like my approach violates the somehow fundamental MVC pattern. My app is displaying visual "stories", and a Story consists (i.e. has @properties) of one Photo and one or more VisualEvent objects to represent e.g. animated circles or moving arrows on the photo. Each VisualEvent object therefore has a eventType @property, that might be e.g. kEventTypeCircle or kEventTypeArrow. All events have things in common, like a startTime @property, but differ in the way they are being drawn on the StoryPlayerView. Currently I'm trying to follow the MVC pattern and have a StoryPlayer object (my controller) that knows about both the model objects (like Story and all kinds of visual events) and the view object StoryPlayerView. To chose the right drawing code for each of the different visual event types, my StoryPlayer is using a switch statement. @implementation StoryPlayer // (...) - (void)showVisualEvent:(VisualEvent *)event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView { switch (event.eventType) { case kEventTypeCircle: [self showCircleEvent:event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView]; break; case kEventTypeArrow: [self showArrowDrawingEvent:event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView]; break; // (...) } But switch statements for type checking are bad design, aren't they? According to Uncle Bob they lead to tight coupling and can and should almost always be replaced by polymorphism. Having read about the "Strategy"-Pattern in Head First Design Patterns, I felt this was a great way to get rid of my switch statement. So I changed the design like this: All specialized visual event types are now subclasses of an abstract VisualEvent class that has a showOnStoryPlayerView: method. @interface VisualEvent : NSObject - (void)showOnStoryPlayerView:(StoryPlayerView *)storyPlayerView; // abstract Each and every concrete subclass implements a concrete specialized version of this drawing behavior method. @implementation CircleVisualEvent - (void)showOnStoryPlayerView:(StoryPlayerView *)storyPlayerView { [storyPlayerView drawCircleAtPoint:self.position color:self.color lineWidth:self.lineWidth radius:self.radius]; } The StoryPlayer now simply calls the same method on all types of events. @implementation StoryPlayer - (void)showVisualEvent:(VisualEvent *)event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView { [event showOnStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView]; } The result seems to be great: I got rid of the switch statement, and if I ever have to add new types of VisualEvents in the future, I simply create new subclasses of VisualEvent. And I won't have to change anything in StoryPlayer. But of cause this approach violates the MVC pattern since now my model has to know about and depend on my view! Now my controller talks to my model and my model talks to the view calling methods on StoryPlayerView like drawCircleAtPoint:color:lineWidth:radius:. But this kind of calls should be controller code not model code, right?? Seems to me like I made things worse. I'm confused! Am I completely missing the point of the strategy pattern? Is there a better way to get rid of the switch statement without breaking model-view separation?

  • ASP.Net MVC2 (RTM) breaks response filtering - "Filtering is not allowed"

    - by womp
    I've just done a test run of upgrading a project to ASP.Net MVC 2 (RTM) in anticipation of the full official .Net 4.0 release coming later this month. Our application is using a minimizer for our CSS and javascript. To do so, it is making use of the HttpResponse.Filter property to set a custom filter. With the upgrade, the setter for this property is throwing an HttpException saying "Filtering is not allowed." Looking that the HttpResponse.Filter property in reflector shows this: set { if (!this.UsingHttpWriter) { throw new HttpException(SR.GetString("Filtering_not_allowed")); } ... private bool UsingHttpWriter { get { return ((this._httpWriter != null) && (this._writer == this._httpWriter)); } } Clearly something has changed in the way the HttpResponse is writing to the output stream in MVC2. Does anyone know what the change is, or at least a workaround for this? EDIT: This seems pretty radical. Some further investigation shows that ASP.Net MVC 2 RTM is using a System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage.SwitchWriter as the Output property of an HttpResponse, whereas MVC 1 was using a plain old HttpWriter. That explains why the exception is being thrown. But that doesn't explain why they've chosen to completely break this functionality. This thread seems to indicate that this is just temporary... but this makes me pretty nervous... this is the RTM after all. Any further comments appreciated on this.

  • T4MVC and duplicate controller names in different areas

    - by artvolk
    In my application I have controller named Snippets both in default area (in application root) and in my area called Manage. I use T4MVC and custom routes, like this: routes.MapRoute( "Feed", "feed/", MVC.Snippets.Rss() ); And I get this error: Multiple types were found that match the controller named 'snippets'. This can happen if the route that services this request ('{controller}/{action}/{id}/') does not specify namespaces to search for a controller that matches the request. If this is the case, register this route by calling an overload of the 'MapRoute' method that takes a 'namespaces' parameter. The request for 'snippets' has found the following matching controllers: Snippets.Controllers.SnippetsController Snippets.Areas.Manage.Controllers.SnippetsController I know that there are overloads for MapRoute that take namespaces argument, but there are no such overloads with T4MVC support. May be I'm missing something? The possible syntax can be: routes.MapRoute( "Feed", "feed/", MVC.Snippets.Rss(), new string[] {"Snippets.Controllers"} ); or, it seems quite good to me to have namespace as T4MVC property: routes.MapRoute( "Feed", "feed/", MVC.Snippets.Rss(), new string[] {MVC.Snippets.Namespace} ); Thanks in advance!

  • PDC and Tech-Ed Europe Slides and Code

    - by Stephen Walther
    I spent close to three weeks on the road giving talks at Tech-Ed Europe (Berlin), PDC (Los Angeles), and the Los Angeles Code Camp (Los Angeles). I got to talk about two topics that I am very passionate about: ASP.NET MVC and Ajax. Thanks everyone for coming to all my talks! At PDC, I announced all of the new features of our ASP.NET Ajax Library. In particular, I made five big announcements: ASP.NET Ajax Library Beta Released – You can download the beta from Ajax.CodePlex.com ASP.NET Ajax Library includes the AJAX Control Toolkit – You can use the Ajax Control Toolkit with ASP.NET MVC. ASP.NET Ajax Library being contributed to the CodePlex Foundation – ASP.NET Ajax is the founding project for the CodePlex Foundation (see CodePlex.org) ASP.NET Ajax Library is receiving full product support – Complain to Microsoft Customer Service at midnight on Christmas ASP.NET Ajax Library supports jQuery integration – Use (almost) all of the Ajax Control Toolkit controls in jQuery For more details on the Ajax announcements, see James Senior’s blog entry on the Ajax announcements at: http://jamessenior.com/post/News-on-the-ASPNET-Ajax-Library.aspx In my MVC talks, I discussed the new features being introduced with ASP.NET MVC 2. Here are three of my favorite new features: Client Validation – Client validation done the right way. Do your validation in your model and let the validation bubble up to JavaScript code automatically. Areas – Divide your ASP.NET MVC application into sub-applications. Great for managing both medium and large projects. RenderAction() – Finally, a way to add content to master pages and multiple pages without doing anything strange or twisted. There are demos of all of these features in the MVC downloads below. Here are the power point and code from all of the talks: PDC – Introducing the New ASP.NET Ajax Library PDC – ASP.NET MVC: The New Stuff Tech-Ed Europe - What's New in Microsoft ASP.NET Model-View-Controller Tech-Ed Europe - Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Taking AJAX to the Next Level

  • Is ASP.NET MVC too much overhead for smaller projects?

    - by Alexander Ryan Baggett
    I will be honest I don't really know much about MVC other than the stuff you can read online in 5 minutes. Unfortunately this doesn't really tell me whether its suited to smaller projects or not. I also read this related question and its chosen answer, but the business perspective is not a concern in this case for me as I am the only one making it. The next answer proceeds to say why it is more flexible. Sure, that's great. But my question is again, if its an ideal choice for a small project. For example I would rather use winforms to make a simple mockup of a small desktop program than do it on WPF because of the overhead of custom styling. So I have a project that will essentially have about 6-8 pages that read excel files and user input use that to pull a bit of data from databases and output resulting excel files. I will be the only one working on this project. If I used webforms I would expect it to take no more than 2-3 weeks. Now I am 100% comfortable with webforms. And I know its easy to do a small project in webforms. But I have only heard good things about MVC so I am seriously considering it.

  • What is the proper way to pass the parameters into a MVC system?

    - by gunbuster363
    I am trying to learn java servlet/jsp with the MVC concept and built the simplest MVC application. Now I want give more detail to it to enhance my understanding. If I would need to register a new row in a table in the database, how should we pass the various value of column into the system? For example, the user might want to register a new event in his planner and the detail of the event involves the 'where', 'when', 'who', 'detail', etc. Should pass all this long value from the servlet's parameter, i.e: the http link? String accNo = request.getParameter("account_number"); String a = request.getParameter("..."); String b = request.getParameter("..."); String c = request.getParameter("..."); String d = request.getParameter("..."); To illustrate my view that it is really unprofessional to show all the parameter on the link: http://localhost:8080/domain1/servlet1?param1=55555555555555&param2=666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666&param3='Some random detail written by user.........................' Is there other way to pass them?

  • Where should "display functions" live in an MVC web app?

    - by User
    I'm using the Yii Framework which is an MVC php framework that is pretty similar to your standard web-based MVC framework. I want to display the related data from a many-to-many table as a list of strings in my view. Assuming a table schema like: tag { id, name } post { id, title, content, date } post_tag { post_id, tag_id } A post will display like: Date: 9/27/2012 Title: Some Title Content: blah blah blah... Tags: Smart Funny Cool Informative I can achieve this by doing something like this in my Post view: <?php echo join(' ', array_map(function($tag) { return $tag->name; }, $model->tags)); ?> (where $model->tags is an array of Tag objects associated with my model) My questions are: Is this amount of code/logic okay in the view? (Personally I think I'd rather just reference a property or call a single function.) If not, where should this code live? In the model? the controller? a helper? Potentially I may want to use in in other views as well. Ultimately I think its purely a display issue which would make me think it should be in the view, but then I have to repeat the code in any view I want to use it in.

  • ASP.Net MVC 3: multiple versions of the site without changing of URL, is it possible?

    - by Seacat
    Our website is written in ASP.NET MVC 3 and we want to change a feature in the core functionality of the site. The problem is not every client can be moved to this new version/format (because of some technical inner restrictions) so it means that we need to keep 2 versions of the same functionality (backend and frontend) simultaneously. We don't want our clients to worry about URLs, so the ideal solution would be keep the same URL but redirect clients to the different versions. The information about clients is stored in database. So the moment when user (client) logs in we know which version of site we should show. I'm thinking about routing and areas but I'm not sure if it's possible for example to have 2 areas with the different versions of the same application. Or is it possible to load the assemblies on the fly? After user is logged in we can decide if (s)he should be redirected to the new or old version. As far as all the clients have been moved to the new version we don't need this system more. How can I do this in ASP.NET MVC?

  • problem with routing/T4MVC Url.Action()

    - by VinnyG
    I have these 2 routes : routes.MapRoute("Agenda", ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["eventsUrl"] + "/{year}/{month}", MVC.Events.Index(), new { year = DateTime.Now.Year, month = DateTime.Now.Month }); routes.MapRoute("AgendaDetail", ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["eventsUrl"] + "/{year}/{month}/{day}", MVC.Events.Detail(), new { year = DateTime.Now.Year, month = DateTime.Now.Month, day = DateTime.Now.Day }); And it work perfectly with this code : <a href="<%= Url.Action(MVC.Events.Detail(Model.EventsModel.PreviousDay.Year, Model.EventsModel.PreviousDay.Month, Model.EventsModel.PreviousDay.Day))%>" title="<%= Model.EventsModel.PreviousDay.ToShortDateString() %>"><img src="<%= Links.Content.images.contenu.calendrier.grand.mois_precedent_png %>" alt="événement précédent" /></a> Except when I get to do the link to today, if it's today, il will point only to www.myurl.com/agenda, witch is the value of CnfigurationManager.AppSettings["eventsUrl"]. What am I doing wrong? It's like if it's today, it point bak to the default agenda... Thanks for the help!

  • Why are action based web frameworks predominant?

    - by deamon
    Most web frameworks are still using the traditional action based MVC model. A controller recieves the request, calls the model and delegates rendering to a template. That is what Rails, Grails, Struts, Spring MVC ... are doing. The other category, the component based frameworks like Wicket, Tapestry, JSF, or ASP.Net Web Forms have become more popular over the last years, but my perception is that the traditional action based approach is far more popular. And even ASP .Net Web Forms has become a sibling name ASP .Net Web MVC. I think the kind of applications built with both types of frameworks is overlapping very much, so the question is: Why are action based frameworks so predominant?

  • ASP.NET MCV 2 controller-url problems

    - by cc0
    I am still very new to the MVC framework, but I managed to create a controller that reads from a database and writes JSON to an url; host.com/Controllername?minValue=something&maxValue=something However when I move the site to a subfolder; host.com/mvc/ it doesn't seem to be able to call the controller from there when I do it like this; host.com/mvc/Procedure?minValue=something&maxValue=something Did I forget to do something somewhere to make this url call valid from that subfolder? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

  • In which controller do you put the CRUD for the child part of a relationship?

    - by uriDium
    I am using ASP.Net MVC but this probably applies to all MVC patterns in general. My problem, for example I have companies and in each company I have a list of contacts. When I have selected a company I can see its details and a list of the contacts for that company. When I want to add a new contact for that company, should the implementation of that action go into the company controller as an "AddContact" action or should it go into the contact controller into a "New" action and we pass the Company ID in the URL? What is the usual way of dealing with this sort of thing in ASP.Net MVC? Is there a better stategy?

  • Why can't I register a custom model binder for a List<int>?

    - by quarksoup
    I have an action that looks like public ActionResult GetUsers(List<int> userIds) {//do stuff} The list of userIds can become quite long, so I want to use Json.Net to deserialize it. To do so I created an IModelBinder implementation, which works fine for other objects, but never gets called for a List. The IModelBind looks like this public class JsonBinder : System.Web.Mvc.IModelBinder { public object BindModel(System.Web.Mvc.ControllerContext controllerContext, System.Web.Mvc.ModelBindingContext bindingContext) { //Do model binding stuff using Json.Net } } And I register this model binder with this line ModelBinders.Binders.Add(typeof(List<int>), new JsonBinder()); However the JsonBinder is never called. Why is this? Should I be using a ValueProvider?

  • ASP.NET MVC hosting recommendations

    - by chris
    I'm looking for recommendations for hosting an asp.net MVC application. Obviously, we need to be able to have access to configure IIS directly - I'd prefer not to have to go thru a control panel. The web server needs to have a dedicated IP, since some clients will be accessing it via IP. We need at least a SQLServer 2005 database, ideally on the same box. Load and usage will be pretty low, so a virtual machine will probably be fine. Does any one have any recommendations that meet the above constraints?

  • ASP.NET MVC + MySql Membership Provider, user cannot login

    - by Jason Miesionczek
    Hello, I've been playing around with using MySql as the membership provider for asp.net mvc forms authentication. I've got things configured correctly as far as i can tell, and i can create users via both the register action and asp.net web config site. however, when i try to login with one of the users, it does not work. it returns an error as if i had entered a wrong password, or if the account doesn't exist. i have verified in the database that the account does exist. I've followed the instructions here for reference: http://blog.tchami.com/post/ASPNET-MVC-2-and-MySQL-Membership-Provider.aspx here is my web.config: <?xml version="1.0"?> <!-- For more information on how to configure your ASP.NET application, please visit http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=152368 --> <configuration> <connectionStrings> <add name="MySQLConn" connectionString="Server=localhost;Database=intereditor;Uid=<user>;Pwd=<password>;"/> </connectionStrings> <system.web> <compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0"> <assemblies> <add assembly="System.Web.Abstractions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> <add assembly="System.Web.Routing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> <add assembly="System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> </assemblies> </compilation> <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms loginUrl="~/Account/LogOn" timeout="2880" name=".ASPXFORM$" path="/" requireSSL="false" slidingExpiration="true" enableCrossAppRedirects="false" /> </authentication> <membership defaultProvider="MySqlMembershipProvider"> <providers> <clear/> <add name="MySqlMembershipProvider" type="MySql.Web.Security.MySQLMembershipProvider,MySql.Web,Version=6.3.4.0, Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d" autogenerateschema="true" connectionStringName="MySQLConn" enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false" requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Hashed" maxInvalidPasswordAttempts="5" minRequiredPasswordLength="6" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0" passwordAttemptWindow="10" passwordStrengthRegularExpression="" applicationName="/" /> </providers> </membership> <profile defaultProvider="MySqlProfileProvider"> <providers> <clear/> <add name="MySqlProfileProvider" type="MySql.Web.Profile.MySQLProfileProvider,MySql.Web,Version=6.3.4.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d" connectionStringName="MySQLConn" applicationName="/" /> </providers> </profile> <roleManager enabled="true" defaultProvider="MySqlRoleProvider"> <providers> <clear /> <add name="MySqlRoleProvider" type="MySql.Web.Security.MySQLRoleProvider,MySql.Web,Version=6.3.4.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d" connectionStringName="MySQLConn" applicationName="/" /> </providers> </roleManager> <pages> <namespaces> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Ajax" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Mvc.Html" /> <add namespace="System.Web.Routing" /> </namespaces> </pages> </system.web> <system.webServer> <validation validateIntegratedModeConfiguration="false"/> <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"/> </system.webServer> <runtime> <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1"> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity name="System.Web.Mvc" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" /> <bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0" newVersion="2.0.0.0" /> </dependentAssembly> </assemblyBinding> </runtime> </configuration> Can anyone please help me identify what is wrong so that users can login? UPDATE So after debugging the login process in the code of the membership provider itself, i discovered that there is a bug in the provider. There is a discrepancy between the password hash that is stored in the database, and the has that is generated based on the inputted password. As a workaround for my issue, i changed the password format to 'encrpyted' and added a machine key to my web.config. I am still interested in figuring out the issue with the hashed format in the provider, and will spend some more time debugging it, and if i can figure out the problem, i will put together a patch and submit it.

  • NullReferenceException makes me want to shoot myself

    - by rockinthesixstring
    Ok, so once upon a time, my code worked. Since then I did some refactoring (basic stuff so I thought) but now I'm getting a null reference exception, and I can't bloody well figure out why. Here's where it starts. note, this is the logout method, but all of my ActivityLogs sections are throwing this error Function LogOut(ByVal go As String) As ActionResult ActivityLogService.AddActivity(AuthenticationHelper.RetrieveAuthUser.ID, _ IActivityLogService.LogType.UserLogout, _ HttpContext.Request.UserHostAddress) ActivityLogService.SubmitChanges() ''# more stuff happens after this End Function The service is pretty straight forward (notice the ERROR THROWN HERE) Public Sub AddActivity(ByVal userid As Integer, ByVal activity As Integer, ByVal ip As String) Implements IActivityLogService.AddActivity Dim _activity As ActivityLog = New ActivityLog With {.Activity = activity, .UserID = userid, .UserIP = ip.IPAddressToNumber, .ActivityDate = DateTime.UtcNow} ActivityLogRepository.Create(_activity) ''#ERROR THROWN HERE End Sub And the Interface that the Service uses looks like this Public Interface IActivityLogService Sub AddActivity(ByVal userid As Integer, ByVal activity As Integer, ByVal ip As String) Function GetUsersLastActivity(ByVal UserID As Integer) As ActivityLog Sub SubmitChanges() ''' <summary> ''' The type of activity done by the user ''' </summary> ''' <remarks>Each int refers to an activity. ''' There can be no duplicates or modifications ''' after this application goes live</remarks> Enum LogType As Integer ''' <summary> ''' A new session started ''' </summary> SessionStarted = 1 ''' <summary> ''' A new user is Added/Created ''' </summary> UserAdded = 2 ''' <summary> ''' User has updated their profile ''' </summary> UserUpdated = 3 ''' <summary> ''' User has logged into they system ''' </summary> UserLogin = 4 ''' <summary> ''' User has logged out of the system ''' </summary> UserLogout = 5 ''' <summary> ''' A new event has been added ''' </summary> EventAdded = 6 ''' <summary> ''' An event has been updated ''' </summary> EventUpdated = 7 ''' <summary> ''' An event has been deleted ''' </summary> EventDeleted = 8 ''' <summary> ''' An event has received a Up/Down vote ''' </summary> EventVoted = 9 ''' <summary> ''' An event has been closed ''' </summary> EventCloseVoted = 10 ''' <summary> ''' A comment has been added to an event ''' </summary> CommentAdded = 11 ''' <summary> ''' A comment has been updated ''' </summary> CommentUpdated = 12 ''' <summary> ''' A comment has been deleted ''' </summary> CommentDeleted = 13 ''' <summary> ''' An event or comment has been reported as spam ''' </summary> SpamReported = 14 End Enum End Interface And the repository is equally straight forward Public Sub Create(ByVal activity As ActivityLog) Implements IActivityLogRepository.Create dc.ActivityLogs.InsertOnSubmit(activity) End Sub The stack trace is as follows [NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.] MyApp.Core.Domain.ActivityLogService.AddActivity(Int32 userid, Int32 activity, String ip) in E:\Projects\MyApp\MyApp.Core\Domain\Services\ActivityLogService.vb:49 MyApp.Core.Controllers.UsersController.Authenticate(String go) in E:\Projects\MyApp\MyApp.Core\Controllers\UsersController.vb:258 lambda_method(Closure , ControllerBase , Object[] ) +163 System.Web.Mvc.ActionMethodDispatcher.Execute(ControllerBase controller, Object[] parameters) +51 System.Web.Mvc.ReflectedActionDescriptor.Execute(ControllerContext controllerContext, IDictionary2 parameters) +409 System.Web.Mvc.ControllerActionInvoker.InvokeActionMethod(ControllerContext controllerContext, ActionDescriptor actionDescriptor, IDictionary2 parameters) +52 System.Web.Mvc.<c_DisplayClass15.b_12() +127 System.Web.Mvc.ControllerActionInvoker.InvokeActionMethodFilter(IActionFilter filter, ActionExecutingContext preContext, Func1 continuation) +436 System.Web.Mvc.<>c__DisplayClass17.<InvokeActionMethodWithFilters>b__14() +61 System.Web.Mvc.ControllerActionInvoker.InvokeActionMethodWithFilters(ControllerContext controllerContext, IList1 filters, ActionDescriptor actionDescriptor, IDictionary2 parameters) +305 System.Web.Mvc.ControllerActionInvoker.InvokeAction(ControllerContext controllerContext, String actionName) +830 System.Web.Mvc.Controller.ExecuteCore() +136 System.Web.Mvc.ControllerBase.Execute(RequestContext requestContext) +232 System.Web.Mvc.ControllerBase.System.Web.Mvc.IController.Execute(RequestContext requestContext) +39 System.Web.Mvc.<>c__DisplayClassb.<BeginProcessRequest>b__5() +68 System.Web.Mvc.Async.<>c__DisplayClass1.<MakeVoidDelegate>b__0() +44 System.Web.Mvc.Async.<>c__DisplayClass81.b__7(IAsyncResult ) +42 System.Web.Mvc.Async.WrappedAsyncResult`1.End() +141 System.Web.Mvc.Async.AsyncResultWrapper.End(IAsyncResult asyncResult, Object tag) +54 System.Web.Mvc.Async.AsyncResultWrapper.End(IAsyncResult asyncResult, Object tag) +40 System.Web.Mvc.<c_DisplayClasse.b_d() +61 System.Web.Mvc.SecurityUtil.b_0(Action f) +31 System.Web.Mvc.SecurityUtil.ProcessInApplicationTrust(Action action) +56 System.Web.Mvc.MvcHandler.EndProcessRequest(IAsyncResult asyncResult) +110 System.Web.Mvc.MvcHandler.System.Web.IHttpAsyncHandler.EndProcessRequest(IAsyncResult result) +38 System.Web.CallHandlerExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +690 System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +194 here's an image of the error when attached to the debugger. • Ninject 2 and MVC 2.0

    - by theouteredge
    I've updated a project to VS2010 and MVC2 from VS2008 and MVC1. I'm having problems with Ninject not finding controllers within Areas Here is my global.asax.cs file: namespace Website { // Note: For instructions on enabling IIS6 or IIS7 classic mode, // visit http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkId=9394801 public class MvcApplication : NinjectHttpApplication { public static StandardKernel NinjectKernel; public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "Balance", "Balance/{action}/{month}/{year}", new { controller = "Balance", action = "Index", month = DateTime.Now.Month, year = DateTime.Now.Year } ); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Login", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); } /* protected void Application_Start() { AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); // initializes the NHProfiler so you can see what is going on with your queries HibernatingRhinos.Profiler.Appender.NHibernate.NHibernateProfiler.Initialize(); } */ protected override void OnApplicationStarted() { RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); RegisterAllControllersIn(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); } protected void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e) { var errorService = NinjectKernel.Get<IErrorLogService>(); errorService.LogError(HttpContext.Current.Server.GetLastError().GetBaseException(), "AppSite"); } protected override IKernel CreateKernel() { if (NinjectKernel == null) { NinjectKernel = new StandardKernel(new ServiceModule()); } return NinjectKernel; } } public class ServiceModule : NinjectModule { public override void Load() { Bind<IHelper>().To<Helper>().InRequestScope(); Bind<IErrorLogService>().To<ErrorLogService>(); Bind<INHSessionFactory>().To<NHSessionFactory>().InSingletonScope(); Bind<ISessionFactory>().ToMethod(ctx => ctx.Kernel.Get<INHSessionFactory>().GetSessionFactory()) .InSingletonScope(); Bind<INHSession>().To<NHSession>(); Bind<ISession>().ToMethod(ctx => ctx.Kernel.Get<INHSession>().GetSession()); } } } Accessing controllers within the /Controllers folder works OK, but accessing controllers within a /Areas/Member/Controller throws the following error: Server Error in '/' Application. I've been trying to figure this out for 3 days...

  • Using ASP.NET MVC 2 with Ninject 2 from scratch

    - by Rune Jacobsen
    I just did File - New Project last night on a new project. Ah, the smell of green fields. I am using the just released ASP.NET MVC 2 (i.e. no preview or release candidate, the real thing), and thought I'd get off to a good start using Ninject 2 (also released version) with the MVC extensions. I downloaded the MVC extensions project, opened it in VS2008Sp1, built it in release mode, and then went into the mvc2\build\release folder and copied Ninject.dll and Ninject.Web.Mvc.dll from there to the Libraries folder on my project (so that I can lug them around in source control and always have the right version everywhere). I didn't include the corresponding .xml files - should I? Do they just provide intellisense, or some other function? Not a big deal I believe. Anyhoo, I followed the most up-to-date advice I could find; I referenced the DLLs in my MVC2 project, then went to work on Global.asax.cs. First I made it inherit from NinjectHttpApplication. I removed the Application_Start() method, and overrode OnApplicationStarted() instead. Here is that method: protected override void OnApplicationStarted() { base.OnApplicationStarted(); AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); // RegisterAllControllersIn(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); } And I also followed the advice of VS and implemented the CreateKernel method: protected override Ninject.IKernel CreateKernel() { // RegisterAllControllersIn(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); return new StandardKernel(); } That is all. No other modifications to the project. You'll notice that the RegisterAllControllersIn() method is commented out in two places above. I've figured I can run it in three different combinations, all with their funky side effects; Running it like above. I am then presented with the standard "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC" page in all its' glory. However, after this page is displayed correctly in the browser, VS shows me an exception that was thrown. It throws in NinjectControllerFactory.GetControllerInstance(), which was called with a NULL value in the controllerType parameter. Notice that this happens after the /Home page is rendered - I have no idea why it is called again, and by using breakpoints I've already determined that GetControllerInstance() has been successfully called for the HomeController. Why this new call with controllerType as null? I really have no idea. Pressing F5 at this time takes me back to the browser, no complaints there. Uncommenting the RegisterAllControllersIn() method in CreateKernel() This is where stuff is really starting to get funky. Now I get a 404 error. Some times I have also gotten an ArgumentNullException on the RegisterAllControllersIn() line, but that is pretty rare, and I have not been able to reproduce it. Uncommenting the RegisterAllControllers() method in OnApplicationStarted() (And putting the comment back on the one in CreateKernel()) Results in behavior that seems exactly like that in point 1. So to keep from going on forever - is there an exact step-by-step guide on how to set up an MVC 2 project with Ninject 2 (both non-beta release versions) to get the controllers provided by Ninject? Of course I will then start providing some actual stuff for injection (like ISession objects and repositories, loggers etc), but I thought I'd get this working first. Any help will be highly appreciated! (Also posted to the Ninject Google Group)
