• Conditionally overriding a system method via categories in Objective-C?

- by adib
Hi Is there a way to provide a method implementation (that bears the exact same name of a method defined by the framework) only when the method isn't already defined in the system? For example method [NSSomeClass someMethod:] exists only in Mac OS X 10.6 and if my app runs in 10.5, I will provide that method's definition in a category. But when the app runs in 10.6, I want the OS-provided method to run. Background: I'm creating an app targeted for both 10.5 and 10.6. The problem is that I recently realized that method +[NSSortDescriptor sortDescriptorWithKey:ascending:] only exists in 10.6 and my code is already littered by that method call. I could provide a default implementation for it (since this time it's not too difficult to implement it myself), but I want the "native" one to be called whenever my app runs on 10.6. Furthermore if I encounter similar problems in the future (with more difficult-to-implement-myself methods), I might not be able to get away with providing a one-liner replacement. This question vaguely similar to Override a method via ObjC Category and call the default implementation? but the difference is that I want to provide implementations only when the system doesn't already has one. Thanks.

• HTML entity encoding (convert '<' to '<') on iPhone in objective-c

- by Markus
I'm developing an application for the iPhone that has inApp-mail sending capabilities. So far so good, but now I want to avoid html-injections as some parts of the mail are user-generated texts. Basically I search for something like this: // inits NSString *sourceString = [NSString stringWithString:@"Hello world! Grüße dich Welt <-- This is in German."]; // ----- THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR // pseudo-code | // V NSString *htmlEncodedString = [sourceString htmlEncode]; // log NSLog(@"source string: %@", sourceString); NSLog(@"encoded string: %@", htmlEncodedString); Expected output source string: Hello world! Grüße dich Welt <-- This is in German. encoded string: Hello world! Grüße dich Welt <-- This is in German. I already googled and looked through several of SO's questions and answers, but all of them seem to be related to URL-encoding and that's not what I really need (I tried stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding with no luck - it creates %C3%BC out of an 'ü' that should be an ü). A code sample would be really great (correcting mine?)... -- Thanks in advance, Markus

• How to send a array as a parameter to a web service using SOAP and objective C.

- by Alejandra Meraz
I'm working in a iPhone app that needs to send a array as a parameter using SOAP. this is the current request and connection: NSString *soapMessage = [NSString stringWithFormat: @"<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\"?>\n" "<soap:Envelope xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:xsd=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema\" xmlns:soap=\"http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/\">\n" "<soap:Body>\n" "<function xmlns=\"http://tempuri.org/\" />\n" "</soap:Body>\n" "</soap:Envelope>\n"]; NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:@"http://myHost.com/myWebService/service.asmx"]; //the url to the WSDL NsMutableURLRequest theRequest = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:url]; NSString *msgLength = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d",[soapMessage length]]; [theRequest addValue:@"text/xml; charset=utf-8" forHTTPHeaderField:@"Content-Type"]; [theRequest addValue:msgLength forHTTPHeaderField:@"Content-Lenght"]; [theRequest setHTTPMethod:@"POST"]; [theRequest addValue:@"myhost.com" forHTTPHeaderField:@"Host"]; [theRequest addValue:@"http://tempuri.org/function" forHTTPHeaderField:@"SOAPAction"]; [theRequest setHTTPBody:[soapMessage dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]]; theConnection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:theRequest delegate:self]; Now, to send parameters I looked at the WSDL of the function description for the input is like this: <s:complexType name="ArrayOfDictionaryEntry"> <s:sequence> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded" name="DictionaryEntry" type="tns:DictionaryEntry" /> </s:sequence> </s:complexType> <s:complexType name="DictionaryEntry"> <s:sequence> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="Key" /> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="Value" /> </s:sequence> </s:complexType> <s:element name="functionInput"> <s:complexType /> </s:element> I guess then that I need to make a array of dictionary entries. what I would like to send is something like this [ location => USA, module => DEVELOPMENT] But I'm kind of confused. the array is created outside the SOAP, like an NSArray or inside the SoapMessage? if so... How is it done? and the DictionaryEntry, should I make a class? thanks for your time n.n

• Converting "fr_FR" into "French (France)" in both directions. (Objective-C iPhone)

- by Janice
I can easily change a short region-code (en_US) into a longer string... but it there an easy way to also move in the other direction? [displayInEnglish displayNameForKey:NSLocaleIdentifier value:regionCountryCode]; "en_US" becomes "English (United States)". "English (United States)" becomes "en_US". I currently store the short region-code in a database.... but when I show some aggregate results... I need to display the longer strings to the user. Or should I just store the longer strings right in the database... and not even worry about "converting" them later? I'm trying to show a "dollars total" for each country. If you were a user... which would you more likely wish to see (for a currency-total list)? A "French" total A "France" total A "French (France)" total A "fr_Fr" total?

• Twitter API Rate Limit - Overcoming on an unauthenticated JSON Get with Objective C?

- by Cian
I see the rate limit is 150/hr per IP. This'd be fine, but my application is on a mobile phone network (with shared IP addresses). I'd like to query twitter trends, e.g. GET /trends/1/json. This doesn't require authorization, however what if the user first authorized with my application using OAuth, then hit the JSON API? The request is built as follows: - (void) queryTrends:(NSString *) WOEID { NSString *urlString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://api.twitter.com/1/trends/%@.json", WOEID]; NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:urlString]; NSURLRequest *theRequest=[NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url cachePolicy:NSURLRequestUseProtocolCachePolicy timeoutInterval:10.0]; NSURLConnection *theConnection=[[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:theRequest delegate:self startImmediately:YES]; if (theConnection) { // Create the NSMutableData to hold the received data. theData = [[NSMutableData data] retain]; } else { NSLog(@"Connection failed in Query Trends"); } //NSData *data = [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString:urlString]]; } I have no idea how I'd build this request as an authenticated one however, and haven't seen any examples to this effect online. I've read through the twitter OAuth documentation, but I'm still puzzled as to how it should work. I've experimented with OAuth using Ben Gottlieb's prebuild library, and calling this in my first viewDidLoad: OAuthViewController *oAuthVC = [[OAuthViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"OAuthTwitterDemoViewController" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]]; // [self setViewController:aViewController]; [[self navigationController] pushViewController:oAuthVC animated:YES]; This should store all the keys required in the app's preferences, I just need to know how to build the GET request after authorizing! Maybe this just isn't possible? Maybe I'll have to proxy the requests through a server side application? Any insight would be appreciated!

• Objective-C / Cocoa: Uploading Images, Working Memory, And Storage.

- by Finley Still
Hello. I'm in the process of porting an application originally in java to cocoa, but I'm rewriting it to make it much better, since I prefer cocoa a lot anyway. One of the problems I had in the application, was that when you uploaded images to it, I had the images created, (as say an NSImage object) and then I just had them sitting in memory, the more I uploaded the more memory they took up, and I ended up running out of memory. My question is this: if I am going to have users upload images to this application in cocoa, how should I go about storing them? I don't just want to copy the file paths, because I want what is saved to contain the images, etc. Is there any way to upload an image and copy it into a different place only for my application? Then load that image with the new path name as needed? Only I would like it all to be consolidated. I'm going to implement saving by archiving one "master" object into an NSData*- so I'd like the images to be saved with that. Is there a temporary location maybe where I could write the images to disk for my application, and then when I saved, they would all be archived into a single file? Also, how do I do this? Thanks.

• iPhone Apps, Objective C, a Graph, and Functions vs. Objects (or something like that)

- by BillEccles
Gentleones, I've got a UIImageView that I have in a UIView. This particular UIImageView displays a PNG of a graph. It's important for this particular view controller and another view controller to know what the graph "looks like," i.e., the function described by the PNG graph. These other view controllers need to be able to call a "function" of some sort with the X value returning the Y value. Please ignore the fact (from an outsider's perspective) that I could probably generate the graph programmatically. So my questions are: 1 - Where should I put this function? Should it go in one view controller or the other, or should it go in its own class or main or...? 2 - Should it be an object in some way? Or should it be a straight function? (In either case, where's it belong?) Pardon the apparent n00b-iness of the question. It's 'cause I'm honestly a n00b! This OOP stuff is giving my head a spin having been a procedural programmer for 30 years. (And I choose to learn it by jumping into an iPhone app. Talk about baptism by fire!) Thanks in advance,Bill

• how to deal with pdf annotation with ipad in objective c?

- by Sarah
Hello, I know that it may sound a silly question but i am really very confused. I am to work with one application that is having operations like PDF loading,annotation, scrolling,zooming and other such functions. Now my question is that i am little bit confused about what template i should use as i went through Quartz 2D Programming Guide and was little bit confused whether i'll be able to apply the above shown functions with the same guideline,as it displays the pdf page on the whole screen. Or is there any other way around? Please help me..Can i use UIWebView for the same functions as i listed above? I ll be grateful if you can help me. Thank you.

• Why am I getting "Message sent to deallocated instance" in Objective-C?

- by Dave C
I have several buttons on my app that are being created dynamically. They are all pointed at the button click event when pressed. When the button pressed method is called, the sender's tag (int value) is parsed into the controller's house ID. It works with one of the buttons — the first one created, to be specific — but the others throw the following error: -[CFNumber intValue]: message sent to deallocated instance 0xc4bb0ff0 I am not releasing these buttons anywhere in my code. I haven't set them to autorelease or anything like that. I'm just wondering why they are doing this on the click. The button click event: - (IBAction) ButtonClick: (id) sender { HouseholdViewController *controller = [[HouseholdViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"HouseholdViewController" bundle:nil]; controller.delegate = self; controller.HouseID = [(NSInteger)[(UIButton *)sender tag] intValue]; //this line throws an error controller.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal; [self presentModalViewController:controller animated:YES]; [controller release]; } Where I am creating the buttons: UIButton *button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom]; button.frame = CGRectMake(MyLongInScreenCoords, MyLatInScreenCoords, 50, 50); UIImage *buttonImageNormal = [UIImage imageNamed:@"blue_pin.png"]; UIImage *strechableButtonImageNormal = [buttonImageNormal stretchableImageWithLeftCapWidth:50 topCapHeight:50]; [button setBackgroundImage:strechableButtonImageNormal forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [self.view addSubview:button]; button.tag = [NSNumber numberWithInt:[[words objectAtIndex: i] intValue]]; ButtonPoints[CurrentHouseCount][0] = button; ButtonPoints[CurrentHouseCount][1] = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:CGPointMake(MyActualLat, MyActualLong)]; [button addTarget:self action:@selector(ButtonClick:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; CurrentHouseCount++;

• How can I consolidate deferred/delayed calls in Objective-C ?

- by thrusty
I'd like to ensure that certain maintenance tasks are executed "eventually". For example, after I detect that some resources might no longer be used in a cache, I might call: [self performSelector:@selector(cleanupCache) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.5]; However, there might be numerous places where I detect this, and I don't want to be calling cleanupCache continuously. I'd like to consolidate multiple calls to cleanupCache so that we only periodically get ONE call to cleanupCache. Here's what I've come up with do to this-- is this the best way? [NSObject cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget:self selector:@selector(cleanupCache) object:nil]; [self performSelector:@selector(cleanupCache) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.5];

• How hard is it for a .NET programmer to learn Objective C and Cocoa?

- by rsteckly
Hi, I'm trying to build a dual platform application for a company of my own I'm trying to start at night. I have the .NET version done, but have not finished the UI part. I'm thinking of buying some 3rd party controls. If I buy these controls, however, they clearly will only work in my Windows version. I'm wondering if I should try to do the UI in GTK# and use Mono with CocoaSharp or just build the thing in MS technology and teach myself the Mac side? I'm just really unfamiliar with the Mac world and am wondering how much of a learning curve there might be. I've thought perhaps of rewriting my core logic in Ruby or Python. This why I could use the .NET version with .NET controls and presumably hook the same code up on the Mac. It's an educational app targeted at consumers. As such, it shouldn't require a lot of technical sophistication to install.

• Objective-C Basic class related question, retaining the value of a specific object using a class fil

- by von steiner
Members, scholars, code gurus. My background is far from any computer programming thus my question may seems basic and somewhat trivial to you. Nevertheless it seems that I can't put my head around it. I have googled and searched for the answer, just to get myself confused even more. With that, I would kindly ask for a simple explanation suitable for a non technical person such as myself and for other alike arriving to this thread. I have left a comment with the text "Here is the issue" below, referring to my question. // character.h #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> @interface character : NSObject { NSString *name; int hitPoints; int armorClass; } @property (nonatomic,retain) NSString *name; @property int hitPoints,armorClass; -(void)giveCharacterInfo; @end // character.m #import "character.h" @implementation character @synthesize name,hitPoints,armorClass; -(void)giveCharacterInfo{ NSLog(@"name:%@ HP:%i AC:%i",name,hitPoints,armorClass); } @end // ClassAtLastViewController.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface ClassAtLastViewController : UIViewController { } -(void)callAgain; @end // ClassAtLastViewController.m #import "ClassAtLastViewController.h" #import "character.h" @implementation ClassAtLastViewController - (void)viewDidLoad { //[super viewDidLoad]; character *player = [[character alloc]init]; player.name = @"Minsc"; player.hitPoints = 140; player.armorClass = 10; [player giveCharacterInfo]; [player release]; // Up until here, All peachy! [self performSelector:@selector(callAgain) withObject:nil afterDelay:2.0]; } -(void)callAgain{ // Here is the issue, I assume that since I init the player again I loss everything // Q1. I loss all the data I set above, where is it than? // Q2. What is the proper way to implement this character *player = [[character alloc]init]; [player giveCharacterInfo]; } Many thanks in advance, Kindly remember that my background is more related to Salmons breeding than to computer code, try and lower your answer to my level if it's all the same to you.

• Objective-C properties are not being recognized in header file?

- by Greg
Hey folks, I wonder if I'm doing something completely stupid here... I'm clearly missing something. I've gotten used to the pattern of defining properties of a custom class, however I seem to be hitting a point where extended classes do not recognize new properties. Case of point, here's my header file: import import "MyTableViewController.h" @interface MyRootController : MyTableViewController { NSMutableArray *sectionList; } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *sectionList; @end Now, for some reason that "sectionList" property is not turning green within my interface file (ie: it's not being recognized as custom property it seems). As a result, I'm getting all kinds of errors down in my implementation. The first is right at the top of my implementation where I try to synthesize the property: import "MyRootController.h" @implementation MyRootController @synthesize sectionList; That synthesize line throws the error "No declaration of property 'sectionList' found in the interface". So, this is really confusing. I'm clearly doing something wrong, although I can't put my finger on what. One thought: I am extending another custom class of my own. Do I need to specify some kind of super-class declaration to keep the architecture from getting sealed one level up? Thanks!

• How to increment a value using a C-Preprocessor in Objective-C?

- by mystify
Example: I try to do this: static NSInteger stepNum = 1; #define METHODNAME(i) -(void)step##i #define STEP METHODNAME(stepNum++) @implementation Test STEP { // do stuff... [self nextFrame:@selector(step2) afterDelay:1]; } STEP { // do stuff... [self nextFrame:@selector(step3) afterDelay:1]; } STEP { // do stuff... [self nextFrame:@selector(step4) afterDelay:1]; } // ... When building, Xcode complains that it can't increment stepNum. This seems logical to me, because at this time the code is not "alive" and this pre-processing substitution stuff happens before actually compiling the source code. Is there another way I could have an variable be incremented on every usage of STEP macro, the easy way?

• How to deal with forward declaration / #import in Cocoa Touch (Objective-C cross C++) correctly?

- by unknownthreat
I am trying to write this header file: //@class AQPlayer; //#import "AQPlayer.h" @interface AQ_PWN_iPhoneViewController : UIViewController { AQPlayer* player; } @end AQPlayer is a .mm file written in C++. I tried to make a class forward declaration here, but it complains to me: error: cannot find interface declaration for 'AQPlayer' So I tried to "#import" the header file instead, but it complains something completely off and weird. Here's a slice of the error complained: In file included from /Users/akaraphan/Desktop/SpecialTopic1/AQ_PWN_iPhone/Classes/AQPlayer.h:51, from /Users/akaraphan/Desktop/SpecialTopic1/AQ_PWN_iPhone/Classes/AQ_PWN_iPhoneViewController.h:12, from /Users/akaraphan/Desktop/SpecialTopic1/AQ_PWN_iPhone/Classes/AQ_PWN_iPhoneAppDelegate.m:10: /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:78: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before 'CAStreamBasicDescription' /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:230: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before '<' token /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:231: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before '==' token /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:233: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before '!=' token /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:234: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before '<=' token /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:235: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before '>=' token /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:236: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before '>' token /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/PublicUtility/CAStreamBasicDescription.h:239: error: expected ';', ',' or ')' before '&' token Am I missing something? • How to simplify my code... 2D NSArray in Objective C...?

- by Tattat
self.myArray = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [self d], [self generateMySecretObject],nil], [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [self generateMySecretObject], [self generateMySecretObject],nil],nil]; for (int k=0; k<[self.myArray count]; k++) { for(int s = 0; s<[[self.myArray objectAtIndex:k] count]; s++){ [[[self.myArray objectAtIndex:k] objectAtIndex:s] setAttribute:[self generateSecertAttribute]]; } } As you can see this is a simple 2*2 array, but it takes me lots of code to assign the NSArray in very first place, because I found that the NSArray can't assign the size at very beginning. Also, I want to set attribute one by one. I can't think of if my array change to 10*10. How long it could be. So, I hope you guys can give me some suggestions on shorten the code, and more readable. thz
