  • SCCM 2007 Collections per OU

    Recently I wanted to create our SCCM collections setup as our Active Directory structure. I finally figured out how to create collections per OU of the domain. I decided to create a simple tutorial that may help other IT professionals the steps to complete this task.   1. Open the ConfigMgr and navigation to the collections. To navigate to the collections go to Site Database>Computer Management>Collections. 2. In the ‘Collections’ right-click and select New Collections. Then it will pop up a Wizards so you can enter the name of the collection and any notes that you may want to add that is associated with the collection.                       3. Next, select the database icon. In the ‘Name’ textbox enter the name of the query. I named mine ‘Query’ just for simplicity sake. After you enter the name select ‘Edit Query Statement…’ 4. Select the ‘Criteria’ tab 5. Select the icon that looks like a sun. 6. At this point you should see a dialog box like this…                     7. Next, click the ‘select’ button. 8. Under the ‘Attribute class’ scroll through until you see ’System Resource’ and for the ‘Attribute"’ scroll through you see ‘System OU Name’. It should look something like this…                 9. After that select OK. 10. In the ‘Value’ textbox enter the string that is associated with the OU in your domain. NOTE: If you don’t know your string name for your OU you can simply go to “Active Directory Users and Computers” and right-click on the OU and select properties. In the ‘object’ tab you should see the string under the ‘Canonical name of object”. That is the string that you put in the ‘Value’ text box. 11. After you enter the OU string name press OK>OK>OK>NEXT>NEXT>FINISH.   That’s it!   I hope this tutorial has help you understand how to create a collection through your OU structure.

  • MOSS 2007 WSP Retraction 'Error"

    This one is a quick post , but I thought I would post this information as I could not find anything that helped me on this specific scenario. Please read the entire article before taking action as there are some irreversable or very troublesome routes I caution about! Problem: I had a client trying to retract a WSP from Central Admin and would eventually go to an, 'Error' State. I could not retract it and after looking at event logs I figured it was a problem with security. I tried several accounts, checked the databases to see if there was some issue with readonly databases and nothing was working.   Solution: Delete the solution from central admin! Yes, I said it. With StsAdm , just delete the solution from Central Admin using this command: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\STSADM.exe" -o deletesolution -name "yoursolution.wsp" What has just happened is that Central Admin does not know about the WSP anymore but the feature and any deployed files are still on the server. For whatever reason SharePoint was not able to retract the files as it normally does. Now you can do one of two things, you can add the solution again to central admin and deploy overtop of the deployed files so it overrides them, or simply clean up the files manually. I re-added the solution through stsadm, but then deployed through stsadm using the -force option in the command. This overrides the existing files on the server. If you deploy through Central admin it will tell you you need the -force option that is not offered as part of the UI in central admin. Use the following command: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\STSADM.exe" -o deploysolution -name "YourSolution.wsp" -immediate -allowgacdeployment -force Just to make sure everything was good, I retracted to solution again, and it worked! then I deleted the solution from central admin alltogether. Then I checked the server and noticed all the files that were deployed with the WSP were cleaned up properly. I then re-added the new WSP the client was looking to install (an Updated WSP). Conclusion: I have no idea why it was not able to retract, but I have seen this several times. I don't know if has to do with security of certain accounts. Althought it's anoying at times, it is fairly easy to fix if you have good instructions. Hope it helps you out!   ***WORD OF CAUTION - if you clean up the files manually you might want to uninstall the features through STSADM commands as SharePOint might still recognize the features that were deployed as the WSP. You might not want to get into the mess of deleting files that are still part of activated or installed Features. THis is why I suggest doing what I did.

  • What's Bringing SharePoint 2007 Server to a hault?

    I've been having issues with my teste environment and I'm hoping someone has run into this problem and can point me in the right direction. I noticed: SharePoint Server Memory is through the roof at times and so is the CPU usage. Most of CPU usage is a sql proccess. Running out of disk space all the time. I looked in the Logs located in the 12 hive and sure enough I have 1G log files that are hard to open because of the size. I know one other person posted something about this back in 2008, but no answers were reached. I have already checked the databases to see if any of them have gone offline for whatever reason, but from SQL everything is fine. I recently re-created an SSP and deleted an old ssp. So I thought maybe that was causing it, and who knows? maybe that causes some of the problems or maybe all. I'm running configuration wizard and see if anything changes. Please if someone has had similar issues let me know.

    I want to install Ubuntu with MS Office Professional Plus 2007 running. I want to format my hard drive with slow speed as it happens when we install xp. The all cleaning with no traces left. For that what'll be easy to do: 1) Formatting entire hard drive OR 2) Formatting only that partition on which I want to install Ubuntu? I should be sure that I can run MS Office Professional Plus 2007 on Ubuntu. I have ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso burned on a CD and have MS Office Prof. Plus 2007 in this form - http://i.imgur.com/qAhP8.jpg I also want to know when I update Ubuntu how much MB will it be?

    Sytmptom:   You have a list or document library page (allitems.aspx) and you are trying to add a Web part.  You get an error message: Unable to add selected Web part(s).  (name of Web part): The file is not checked out.  You must first check out this document before making changes. Publishing features are not turned on and it is not a page that lives in a library accessible by the GUI. Solution:  Open the site in SharePoint Designer and check out the page. Then, check in the page after modifications are done.  It seems like this is just a bug.

    Symptom: When configuring incoming e-mail, the e-mails come through just fine if the server name is in the e-mail address: [email protected] but when you change it to a vanity name [email protected], the message is bounced back and you get this error: Delivery has failed to these recipients or distribution lists: [email protected] Your message wasn't delivered because of security policies. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this  message for you.    Please provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator. The following organization rejected your message: servername01.fqdn.com.   Problem: The SharePoint server relay rejects the message because it doesn't recognize the name.  You have set it up in Exchange, but you need to set up an alias in the SMTP service on the SharePoint server;   Solution: Configure an Alias Domain An alias domain is an alias of the default domain. You can set up alias domains that use the same settings as the default domain. Messages that are received by the SMTP Service for an alias domain are placed in the Drop folder that is designated for the default domain. To configure an alias domain, follow these steps: Start IIS Manager or open the IIS snap-in. Expand Server_name, where Server_name is the name of the server, and then expand the SMTP virtual server that you want (for example, Default SMTP Virtual Server). Right-click Domains, point to New, and then click Domain. The New SMTP Domain Wizard starts. Click Alias, and then click Next. Type a name for the alias domain in the Name box, and then click Finish. Quit IIS Manager or close the IIS snap-in.

    What issues have people encountered with older OS's (2000, XP) and olders versions of Microsoft Office (2000, XP, 2003) with the 'Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack'? I have a couple of Windows 2000 client PC's encountering different errors when attempting to open .docx or .xlsx documents, some with Office XP and the others with Office 2003. Reading through forums it appears that the different versions of the compatibility pack, not all were compatible with Windows 2000 (versions 3 & 4 are not). There are also Service Packs for the Compatibility Pack. With these Windows 2000 clients, it seems i need the Compatibility Pack version 2, then to install the Service Packs, yet i'm unable to find a link for version 2 of it. First error message: "This is a pre-release version of the Compatibilty Pack and can open pre-release Office 2007 files only." Is solved below. Second error message: "The converter failed to open the file." My troubleshooting is still on-going.

  • Domain joining debate for Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2007 on windows SBS 2008 for a user on a laptop that will travel a fair amount of the time.

    I'm basically debating on whether or not to join the Domain on a Laptop, and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. If the computer were staying in the office, its a no brainer. Join the domain. In this case I have a user who will come into the office a few days a week, and work remotely the rest of the time. There is a working VPN using OpenVPN client/server, but it's not site-to-site. My knee jerk reaction is to not join the domain, so that the user can have 1 profile that they always use. In this configuration, should Outlook work properly with the user's domain account, and should the shared calendar still work (at least once inside the VPN)? My concern with joining the domain would be the inability to login to it when elsewhere. Is there maybe a way around this with caching or something? Would creating a second local login make sense for a user like this in any way? If so, why not just skip the domain join to begin with? Any thoughts on or experiences with this would be appreciated.   • WebCenter .NET Accelerator - Microsoft SharePoint Data via WSRP

    Platforms in the enterprise will never be homogeneous. As much as any vendor would enjoy having their single development or application technology be exclusively adopted by customers, too much legacy, time, education, innovation and vertical business needs exist to make using a single platform practical. JAVA and .NET are the two industry application platform heavyweights and more often than not, business users are leveraging various systems in their day to day activities that incorporate applications developed on top of both platforms. BEA Systems acquired Plumtree Software to complete their "liquid" view of data, stressing that regardless of a particular source system heterogeneous data could interoperate at not only through layers that allowed for data aggregation, but also at the "glass" or UI layer. The technical components that allowed the integration at the glass thrive today at Oracle, helping WebCenter to provide a rich composite application framework. Oracle Ensemble and the Oracle .NET Application Accelerator allow WebCenter to consume and interact with the UI layers provided by .NET applications and a series of other technologies. The beauty of the .NET accelerator is that it can consume any .NET application and act as a Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) producer. I recently had a chance to leverage the .NET accelerator to expose a ASP .NET 2.0 (C#) application in the WebCenter UI (pictured above) and wanted to share a few tips to help others get started with similar integrations. I was using two virtual machines for the exercise - one with Windows Server 2003, running SharePoint and the other running WebCenter Spaces 11g. For my sample application data I ended up using SharePoint 2007 lists and calendars (MOSS 2007) to supply results using a .NET API for SharePoint.

    Has anyone delt with this exception from ABCpdf? We're running on Server 2008 and only have issues converting Office files (Word and Excel). This all worked well on Server 2003. Because we're only having issues with Office files I wonder if it's related to the XPS support on Server 2008? The code that calls into this function is running as a Windows Service.   • Why does Cut/Paste of form components sometimes stop working in Delphi 2007 IDE?

    This is driving me crazy. I'm not going to take it anymore. I'm going to ask, even at the risk of eternal public humiliation! (If it's something really obvious or that I've done to the system myself). For reasons I've never quite had the patience to work out, every so often the form I'm working on in Delphi 2007's visual form editor goes 'pseudo-read-only'; I can add new components to the form, I can move/resize existing ones (and change any properties in the Object Inspector), and I can select a component and 'copy' it to the clipboard. But I'm completely unable to cut a component from the form, or paste a new copy down. I don't believe it's to do with the 'Lock Controls' Edit menu option as I can toggle this on or off and it has the effect it's supposed to - this disappearance of Cut & Paste happens on the right-click context menu, from the keyboard and from the main Edit menu - it's as if the form has become read only to thing to do with the clipboard. If I close the form in the IDE and then reopen it, everything starts working fine again (just as D1, D3, D5 and D7 always did for me, previously). I'm not going mad, as I'm sure I read something about why this happens on a newsgroup once and it's caught me out from time to time many many times in the last few months, but I've failed to find the newsgroup reference this evening and I've decided that, as more and more Delphi users seem to be making use of StackOverflow, it was worth asking here. Help - when I'm doing lots of form-work it drives me absolutely mad!

  • What are Sharepoint(MOSS 2007) Developement/Deployment best practices.

    We are deploying sharepoint MOSS 2007 at our work. I'm trying to come up with a sharepoint development and deployment methodology. We have Dev/QA/Prod environments and I need a way, preferably automated to deploy changes from Dev to QA and from there to prod. We are creating site collections web parts etc. Some of it is done directly within sharepoint, some through Sharepoint designer or visual studio. I'm looking for a way to extract this and deploy it to other enviornments. I tried stsadm backup/restore import/export etc but they all move the data along with it as well. I just need the structure deployed. Content deployment paths and jobs does the same thing as well. We use MSBuild & Curisecontrol.net for other .net projects to automate build/deployment process. I'm looking for something similar with sharepoint if possible. What are your best practices for this? Since my team is learning we don't have a defined process and we are open to change our development process if needed.

  • App-V Problems After SCCM 2007 SP2 Upgrade

    We're running an SCCM (MS System Centre Config Manager, successor to SMS) 2007 environment and delivering a number of applications to clients virtualized using App-V 4.5.1. The App-V apps are delivered by SCCM in Download-and-Execute, not streaming mode. The SCCM environment was recently service packed to SCCM 2007 SP2 (amongst other things this gives Win7 support). We also pushed out the updated SCCM clients to our workstations. This seems to have broken file associations for virtual apps for a large number of our users. The users can still open their App-V apps by finding the specific app on their Start Menu and clicking it's icon, but double-clicking an associated file in Explorer, or opening an email attachment gives the "This action is only valid for installed applications" error. There is a Technet blog entry from the App-V team talking about this issue "Upgrade to ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 may break App-V File Type Associations" but running the script there comes back saying "The User Interface option has been updated" but hasn't seemed to fix the problems for any of our users. Unfortunately the Technet blogs don't seem to have comments switched on so you can't see how this has worked out for other people. Anyone else had this problem, have you found any other way to fix it?

    Hi, Long story: My MacBook's hard drive failed one year ago, just a month after its warranty ended or: a year and a month after I bought it. After about ten phone calls to Apple's service, they agreed to extend the warranty for another year, so that I got it replaced free of charge. In the mean time, I got to know that many MacBook users that experience/report hard drive failures. Every reported crash was preceded by a slowdown of system performance, an increased occurrence of the spinning beach ball wait courser, and frequent crashes of applications that used to run very robust until then. It happened (as far as I know) with MacBooks from 2006/2007. All these MacBooks additionally suffer from a recurring wearing down of their "top case". Many heavy users had to replace their HDDs three time since 2006/2007 resulting in an head crash, making it impossible to recover data (diagnosis of recovery specialists) in most but not all cases HDD was Seagate (doesn't necessarily have to be the cause, if majority of the MacBook charge contained Seagate drives) And right now (one year after my first disk crash), these symptoms are cumulating on my system, again ... Short version: prevalent hard drive failure on MacBook charge from 2006/2007 (i.e. 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Due) I am looking for any (preferable open source) tool for checking the hard drive condition, especially to detect the known "MacBook problem". So, that I can replace the disk on time. If any Mac user found a solution to prevent the repeated failure of heir hard drive, I would be very glad to get to known it. I really enjoy my old MacBook, but I hate to get interrupted every year by an HDD crash. BTW, the issue is already in discussion for a long time, but there seems to be no solution, so far.     I have installed Microsoft Office on my new Windows 7 64-bit system. Recently, it encounter some error and I tried to re-install it. It wasn't successful. So, I have to use Microsoft Install Clean Up to uninstall Microsoft Office. When I tried to install it again, I received this message: Microsoft Office 2007 encountered an error during setup. Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key. {a bunch of long keys}. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Product Support Service for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see {a *chm file}. After that, I tried to run the setup as administrator but I ended up with the same error. So what should I do to solve this problem?
