The Oracle Retail Week Awards - most exciting awards yet?

Last night's annual Oracle Retail Week Awards saw the UK's top retailers come together to celebrate the very best of our industry over the last year. The Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London was the setting for an exciting ceremony which this year marked several significant milestones in British - and global - retail. Check out our videos about the event at our Oracle Retail YouTube channel, and see if you were snapped by our photographer on our Oracle Retail Facebook page. There were some extremely hot contests for many of this year's awards - and all very deserving winners. The entries have demonstrated beyond doubt that retailers have striven to push their standards up yet again in all areas over the past year. The judging panel includes some of the most prestigious names in the retail industry - to impress the panel enough to win an award is a substantial achievement. This year the panel included the likes of Andy Clarke - Chief Executive of ASDA Group; Mark Newton Jones - CEO of Shop Direct Group; Richard Pennycook - the finance director at Morrisons; Rob Templeman - Chief Executive of Debenhams; and Stephen Sunnucks - the president of Gap Europe. These are retail veterans who have each helped to shape the British High Street over the last decade. It was great to chat with many of them in the Oracle VIP area last night. For me, last night's highlight was honouring both Sir Stuart Rose and Sir Terry Leahy for their contributions to the retail industry. Both have set the standards in retailing over the last twenty years and taken their respective businesses from strength to strength, demonstrating that there is always a need for innovation even in larger businesses, and that a business has to adapt quickly to new technology in order to stay competitive. Sir Terry Leahy's retirement this year marks the end of an era of global expansion for the Tesco group and a milestone in the progression of British retail. Sir Terry has helped steer Tesco through nearly 20 years of change, with 14 years as Chief Executive. During this time he led the drive for international expansion and an aggressive campaign to increase market share. He has led the way for High Street retailers in adapting to the rise of internet retailing and nurtured a very successful home delivery service. More recently he has pioneered the notion of cross-channel retailing with the introduction of Tesco apps for the iPhone and Android mobile phones allowing customers to scan barcodes of items to add to a shopping list which they can then either refer to in store or order for delivery. John Lewis Partnership was a very deserving winner of The Oracle Retailer of the Year award for their overall dedication to excellent retailing practices. The business was also named the American Express Marketing/Advertising Campaign of the Year award for their memorable 'Never Knowingly Undersold' advert series, which included a very successful viral video and radio campaign with Fyfe Dangerfield's cover of Billy Joel's 'She's Always a Woman' used for the adverts. Store Design of the Year was another exciting category with Topshop taking the accolade for its flagship Oxford Street store in London, which combines boutique concession-style stalls with high fashion displays and exclusive collections from leading designers. The store even has its own hairdressers and food hall, making it a truly all-inclusive fashion retail experience and a global landmark for any self-respecting international fashion shopper. Over the next few weeks we'll be exploring some of the winning entries in more detail here on the blog, so keep an eye out for some unique insights into how the winning retailers have made such remarkable achievements.

Why Oracle Data Integrator for Big Data?

Big Data is everywhere these days - but what exactly is it? It’s data that comes from a multitude of sources – not only structured data, but unstructured data as well. The sheer volume of data is mindboggling – here are a few examples of big data: climate information collected from sensors, social media information, digital pictures, log files, online video files, medical records or online transaction records. These are just a few examples of what constitutes big data. Embedded in big data is tremendous value and being able to manipulate, load, transform and analyze big data is key to enhancing productivity and competitiveness. The value of big data lies in its propensity for greater in-depth analysis and data segmentation -- in turn giving companies detailed information on product performance, customer preferences and inventory. Furthermore, by being able to store and create more data in digital form, “big data can unlock significant value by making information transparent and usable at much higher frequency." (McKinsey Global Institute, May 2011) Oracle's flagship product for bulk data movement and transformation, Oracle Data Integrator, is a critical component of Oracle’s Big Data strategy. ODI provides automation, bulk loading, and validation and transformation capabilities for Big Data while minimizing the complexities of using Hadoop. Specifically, the advantages of ODI in a Big Data scenario are due to pre-built Knowledge Modules that drive processing in Hadoop. This leverages the graphical UI to load and unload data from Hadoop, perform data validations and create mapping expressions for transformations. The Knowledge Modules provide a key jump-start and eliminate a significant amount of Hadoop development. Using Oracle Data Integrator together with Oracle Big Data Connectors, you can simplify the complexities of mapping, accessing, and loading big data (via NoSQL or HDFS) but also correlating your enterprise data – this correlation may require integrating across heterogeneous and standards-based environments, connecting to Oracle Exadata, or sourcing via a big data platform such as Oracle Big Data Appliance. A little over 2 years ago when Oracle completed its acquisition of Sun, a lot of community speculation arose regarding Oracle's Java commitment. Whether the fears and concerns were legitimate or not, the only way to emphatically demonstrate Oracle's seriousness with moving Java forward was through positive action. In 2010, Oracle committed to putting Java back on schedule whereby large gaps between release trains would be a thing of the past. And in 2011, that promise came true. With the 2011 summer release of JDK 7, the Java ecosystem now had a version brought up to date. And then in the fall of 2011, JavaFX 2.0 righted the JavaFX ship making rich internet applications a reality. Similar progress between Oracle and the Java community continues to blossom. New-found relationship investments between Oracle and Java User Groups are taking root. Greater participation and content execution by the Java community in JavaOne is steadily increasing. The road ahead is lit with bright lights and opportunities. And now there's more good news to share. As of April 2nd, two recognized JavaFX technology luminaries and "rock stars" speakers from the Java community are joining Oracle on a new journey. We're proud to have both Jim Weaver and Stephen Chin joining Oracle's Java Evangelist Team. Two Cloudy Observations from Oracle OpenWorld

Now that the dust has settled from another amazing Oracle OpenWorld, I wanted to reflect back on a couple of key observations I made during the event. First, it was pretty clear that Cloud was again a big deal at this year's conference. It was hard to not notice that Oracle continues to be "all-in" with respect to cloud computing. Just to give you an idea of the emphasis on Cloud, there were over 300 Cloud-related sessions at this year's OpenWorld. If you caught some of the demo booths in the Oracle Red Lounge, then you saw some of the great platform, application, and social services that are now part of Oracle Cloud, as well as numerous demos of private cloud products that Oracle offers. Second, during Thomas Kurian's keynote presentation on Oracle Cloud, he announced the Preview Availability of a new service called Oracle Developer Cloud Service. This new platform service will provide developers with instant access to environments to better manage the application development lifecycle in the cloud. It provides development project teams access to favorite tools like Hudson, Git, Github, wikis, and tasks to help make innovation faster, more collaborative, and more effective. There's also integration with IDEs like Eclipse, NetBeans, and JDeveloper. If you're a developer, it's an awesome addition to Oracle Cloud's platform services! Oracle Enterprise Manager Extensibility News - June 2014

Introducing Extensibility Exchange Version 2 On the heals of Enterprise Manager 12c Release 4 this week comes version 2.0 of the Extensibility Exchange. A new theme allows optimal viewing on a number of different computing devices from large monitor displays to tablets to smartphones. One of the first things you'll notice is a scrollable banner with the latest news related to Enterprise Manager and extensibility. Along with the "slider" and the latest entries from Oracle and the Partner community, new features like a tag cloud and an auto-complete search box provide a better way to find the plug-in, connector or other Enterprise Manager entity you are looking for. Once you find it, a content details page with specific info related to that particular entity will enable you to access it at the provider's site and also rate and comment on that particular item. You can also send an email from the content details page which is routed to the developer. And if you want to use version 1 of the Extensibility Exchange instead, you will be able to do so via the "Classic" option. Check it out today at http://www.oracle.com/goto/emextensibility. New Book: Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Handbook

Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Handbook, by Tom Plunkett, TJ Palazzolo, and Tejas Joshi, Oracle Press. The well-known characteristics and tiers of cloud computing have spawned myriad implementations by a host of vendors and system integrators. One of these, Oracle's Exalogic Elastic Cloud, part of Oracle's family of Engineered Systems, is a key component of Oracle's public and private cloud computing solutions, providing critical PaaS (Platform as a Service) features for cloud developers. These developers need guidance to take advantage of Exalogic's extensive capabilities, and the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Handbook, written by three highly experienced Oracle technologists, provides that guidance. Part One of the book covers Exalogic's hardware and software components, and includes a very useful chapter on deployment examples, describing best practices for scalabiity, availability, backup and recovery, and multi-tenant security, including integration with other Oracle Engineered Systems and products such as Exadata and storage subsystems. Part Two is a thorough guide to Exalogic installation features, configuration and monitoring, packaged application software management, and scalable application development. The NEW Oracle Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange

Oracle Enterprise Manager continues to expand its Eco-system with the NEW Extensibility Exchange! The Exchange offers a searchable listing of Enterprise Manager entities. Today it’s stocked with plug-ins and connectors for Enterprise Manager 12c and 11g. Anyone - partners, customers, ACE community members, anyone - can post an entity subject to approval of course. So in addition to plug-ins and connectors, the Exchange will have best practices, deployment procedures, templates, and essentially any Enterprise Manager entity that’s relevant. The Exchange provides Development Resources to guide contributors in the creation of plug-ins and connectors. A Community Resources page features plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validate Integration program as well as some other contributions important to customers. You can also discover ways to get more involved with Enterprise Manager through the user and partner communities. Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 now contains the ability to dynamically link the following libraries on both Windows and Linux: The Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) on Intel chips The AMD Core Math Library (ACML) on AMD chips To take advantage of the performance enhancements provided by Intel MKL or AMD ACML in Oracle R Distribution, simply add the MKL or ACML shared library directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH system environment variable. This automatically enables MKL or ACML to make use of all available processors, vastly speeding up linear algebra computations and eliminating the need to recompile R. Even on a single core, the optimized algorithms in the Intel MKL libraries are faster than using R's standard BLAS library. Open-source R is linked to NetLib's BLAS libraries, but they are not multi-threaded and only use one core. While R's internal BLAS are efficient for most computations, it's possible to recompile R to link to a different, multi-threaded BLAS library to improve performance on eligible calculations. Compiling and linking to R yourself can be involved, but for many, the significantly improved calculation speed justifies the effort. Oracle R Distribution notably simplifies the process of using external math libraries by enabling R to auto-load MKL or ACML. For R commands that don't link to BLAS code, taking advantage of database parallelism using embedded R execution in Oracle R Enterprise is the route to improved performance. What's new at Oracle in Gamification?

It's been a crazy few weeks in Apps UX. We are actively working on some gamification designs in now 4 different application product areas, as well as supporting some teams in other areas of Oracle. Since that gets to be a pretty diverse group with a lot of resources and ideas, we've started a group in the Oracle Social Network on Gamification at Oracle. That's limited to internal users at Oracle, but if you are interested in joining, ping me directly for more information at [email protected]. We're planning another design jam like we did here at Oracle in May and at the Enterprise Gamification Forum in San Diego in September. This time, we're taking the show to the UK, and hosting it with a group of customers on the Oracle Usability Advisory Board. It should be a great event! We're also actively designing some gamified flows which we'll be testing with users at the UKOUG to see what our customers think about some of our gamification ideas. We're looking at more feedback opportunities. Internally, we surveyed 444 folks within Oracle about gamification and we'll be posting some of our findings on that here soon. I'll be posting a blog on gamification for our customers at useableapps.oracle.com in the next few weeks and I'll cross-post to here when it comes out. So even though it's been quiet on this blog, we are busy and I'm hoping to push out more content in the next few weeks! Would love to know what's most interesting to the folks reading so if there's something you especially want to see, feel free to comment or email me about it.

Recientemente hemos organizado un evento de Digitalización para mostrar algunos de los últimos productos de Oracle en éste área.Siempre tendemos a pensar que en España estamos retrasados en estas tecnologías y que el mercado no está preparado para eliminar el papel. En algunos casos es cierto, pero también nos hemos llevado sorpresas con clientes extremadamente avanzados en la gestión electrónica del papel.Para los clientes que no tienen una solución corporativa ya desplegada, nuestra oferta de Imaging les parece completa e integrada, porque les permite digitalizar el papel en el punto más cercano a su recepción y posteriormente realizar todo el trámite interno de forma digital.Este proceso es el que se muestra en la siguiente imágen: Sobre todo en el entorno financiero los clientes ya tienen grandes infraestructuras desplegadas (algunos con funcionalidades muy sofisticadas que han desarrollado a medida durante estos últimos años).En estos casos, su interés está centrado en 2 capacidades clave de nuestros productos: La digitalización distribuidaEl OCR inteligenteCuando ya disponemos de una infraestructura de digitalización centralizada, tenemos varios puntos de mejora con los que conseguir mayores ratios de ahorro en la gestión del papel. Uno de ellos es digitalizar en origen, de forma que ahorraremos en logística de desplazamiento y almacenamiento de papel (reducimos valijas) y en velocidad de arranque de los procesos (desde el momento de la recepción).El hecho de poder hacer esto sólo con un explorador de internet es muy novedoso para los clientes.El no instalar ninguna pieza de software de cliente parece que es un requisito que muchos clientes estaban demandando desde hace tiempo. De hecho, estamos realizando demos en vivo con un escáner del cliente (solo necesitamos el driver de windows para ese escáner). El resultado es sorprendente porque mostramos cómo: escaneamos con sólo un explorador de internet; el documento escaneado, con sus metadatos, se incorporan al gestor documental; y se dispara su workflow de aprobación.Hacer esto en segundos es algo que genera mucho interés en los clientes de cara a acelerar la gestión de muchos de sus trámites en papel.Por último, lo más novedoso de la oferta es el OCR inteligente. Hay quien ya tiene absolutamente operativas sus infraestructuras de digitalización con todas estas capacidades, y buscan un paso más allá con el reconocimiento inteligente de todos los metadatos posibles.El beneficio es rápido, claramente cuantificable y muy alto. El software de OCR inteligente se basa en lógica difusa y nos permite definir los umbrales de validación totalmente adecuados a nuestros factores de confianza. Es decir, configuramos el umbral para que cuando el software acepta un acierto tengamos la seguridad total de que dichos metadatos se han reconocido perfectamente. En caso contrario, el software lanza una validación manual.¿Qué pasa si conseguimos que para determinados documentos, el 40%, 50%, 60% o incluso el 70% u 80% de ellos fueran procesados 100% automáticamente?. El ahorro es inmenso, la reducción del tiempo de proceso también, y la integración con nuestras infraestructuras de digitalización es muy sencilla (basta con desviar unos cuantos documentos de un tipo concreto a Oracle Forms Recognition y evaluar el resultado).Os animo a que veáis estos productos y consigamos hacer realidad la reducción de papel.

Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel and Emulex HBA Eliminate Silent Data Corruption

Yesterday, Emulex announced that it has added support for T10 Protection Information (T10-PI), formerly called T10-DIF, to a number of its HBAs. When used with Oracle's Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, this will prevent silent data corruption and help ensure the integrity and regulatory compliance of user data as it is transferred from the application to the SAN From the press release: Traditionally, protecting the integrity of customers' data has been done with multiple discrete solutions, including Error Correcting Code (ECC) and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC), but there have been coverage gaps across the I/O path from the operating system to the storage. The implementation of the T10-PI standard via Emulex's BlockGuard feature, in conjunction with other industry player's implementations, ensures that data is validated as it moves through the data path, from the application, to the HBA, to storage, enabling seamless end-to-end integrity.
