  • How to overcome vc++ warning C4003 while writing common code for both gcc and vc++

    - by compbugs
I have a code that is compiled in both gcc and vc++. The code has a common macro which is called in two scenarios. When we pass some parameters to it. When we don't want to pass any parameters to it. An example of such a code is: #define B(X) A1##X int main() { int B(123), B(); return 0; } The expect output from the pre-processing step of compilation is: int main() { int A1123, A1; return 0; } The output for both gcc and vc++ is as expected, but vc++ gives a warning: warning C4003: not enough actual parameters for macro 'B' How can I remove this warning and yet get the expected output? Thanks.

  • Common Ruby Idioms

    - by DanSingerman
One thing I love about ruby is that mostly it is a very readable language (which is great for self-documenting code) However, inspired by this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/609612/ruby-code-explained and the description of how ||= works in ruby, I was thinking about the ruby idioms I don't use, as frankly, I don't fully grok them. So my question is, similar to the example from the referenced question, what common, but not obvious, ruby idioms do I need to be aware of to be a truly proficient ruby programmer? By the way, from the referenced question a ||= b is equivalent to if a == nil || a == false a = b end (Thanks to Ian Terrell for the correction) Edit: It turns out this point is not totally uncontroversial. The correct expansion is in fact (a || (a = (b))) See these links for why: http://DABlog.RubyPAL.Com/2008/3/25/a-short-circuit-edge-case/ http://DABlog.RubyPAL.Com/2008/3/26/short-circuit-post-correction/ http://ProcNew.Com/ruby-short-circuit-edge-case-response.html Thanks to Jörg W Mittag for pointing this out.

  • C# settings using ApplicationSettingsBase - roaming and common

    - by Mark Pim
I'm using the Windows Forms Application settings architecture (or however you're supposed to refer to it) and am successfully saving user settings to AppData. What I want to do is have some settings common to all users of a particular machine and some settings which roam with users across machines. For example I have some settings relating to a peripheral attached to the computer (model, settings etc.) and some user preferences like user interface colours. The colours preferences should roam with the user, but the peripheral settings should stay on the local computer no matter who's logged on. How can I mark these types of settings so that some get stored in /AppData/... and some in /AppData? Note that I don't want Application level settings - each computer the app will be installed on will have different settings. I'm targetting .Net 3.0 if that makes a difference.

  • Unable to Mange DNS via MMC

    - by IT Helpdesk Team Manager
When trying to access the DNS service on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Build 3790) domain controller/schema master via the MMC DNS snap in or locally via the DNS MMC from Administrative tools I'm getting a red "X" through the icon for the DNS Server. The inability to access DNS management via MMC happens on all domain controllers as well. We've looked at items such as the DHCP client not being started, incorrect DNS setup ( the machine points at itself and another DC ), the DNS service not running ( it is and all DNS queries via NSLOOKUP work correctly ), dslint returns the correct information and functions as expected. There is the following entry in the DNS event log: The DNS server could not initialize the remote procedure call (RPC) service. If it is not running, start the RPC service or reboot the computer. The event data is the error code. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. 0000: 0000051b dnscmd fails with RPC server unavailable yet RPC is started: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.DOMAIN>dnscmd /Info Info query failed status = 1722 (0x000006ba) Command failed: RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE 1722 (000006ba) DCDIAG /TEST:DNS /V /E produces the following errors: Warning: no DNS RPC connectivity (error or non Microsoft DNS server is running) [Error details: 1753 (Type: Win32 - Description: There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.)] Warning: no DNS RPC connectivity (error or non Microsoft DNS server is running) [Error details: 1722 (Type: Win32 - Description: The RPC server is unavailable.)] The DNS server could not initialize the remote procedure call (RPC) service. If it is not running, start the RPC service or reboot the computer. The event data is the error code. A DNS query for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs. returns the correct results. All domain and ADS related activities are working except that I can't manage my DNS via MMC or dnscmd. Any thoughts or solutions would be greatly appreciated. • Selecting the most common value from relation - SQL statement

    - by Ronnie
I have a table within my database that has many records, some records share the same value for one of the columns. e.g. | id | name | software | ______________________________ | 1 | john | photoshop | | 2 | paul | photoshop | | 3 | gary | textmate | | 4 | ade | fireworks | | 5 | fred | textmate | | 6 | bob | photoshop | I would like to return the value of the most common occurring piece of software, by using an SQL statement. So in the example above the required SQL statement would return 'photoshop' as it occurs more than any other piece of software. Is this possible? Thank you for your time.

  • Common MVC 2 Pitfalls

    - by mcass20
I surprised this hasn't been asked before...or maybe I just don't see it. Anyway, I'm finally straying from the comfort of ASP.NET Web Forms and exploring the world of MVC2. I've done the nerdinner walk-through and it was fairly straightforward. Now I am getting a little more adventurous and building an MVC2 app on my own and would like to know if there are some common pitfalls that others can attest to. Please consider my background as an ASP.NET Web Forms developer. Thanks!

  • Problem with Variable Scoping in Rebol's Object

  • How to merge two tables based on common column and sort the results by date

  • Database of common translated phrases for localization?

    - by richardtallent
I'd like to localize my app into a few other languages, all of which I can barely order a drink in. Does anyone know of an online resource for translations of common software menu options, messages, etc. into other languages? Given the number of developers (both OSS and closed-source) that deal with localization, and the overlap of resource strings between, it seems like a pretty obvious fit for a wiki or open source package, but I can't seem to find anything like this. I could try to mine the Windows resource files or dig around in resource strings in robust OSS apps like Firefox, but I suspect I'm not the first person to think of this and surely there is a site that I'm just not finding yet. Update: since nothing exists like this that I could find, I started a feeble attempt at an open-source string library. It's just a boilerplate Google spreadsheet now, so if you want to contribute, please go here: http://www.xark.org/

  • Most common C# bitwise operations

    - by steffenj
For the life of me, I can't remember how to set, delete, toggle or test a bit in a bitfield. Either I'm unsure or I mix them up because I rarely need these. So a "bit-cheat-sheet" would be nice to have. For example: flags = flags | FlagsEnum.Bit4; // Set bit 4. or if ((flags == FlagsEnum.Bit4)) == FlagsEnum.Bit4) // Is there a less verbose way? Can you give examples of all the other common operations, preferably in C# syntax using a [Flags] enum?

  • Clojure: Equivalent to Common Lisp READ function?

    - by jkndrkn
Hi there. When I want to read in an S-expression stored in a file into a running Common Lisp program, I do the following: (defun load-file (filename) "Loads data corresponding to a s-expression in file with name FILENAME." (with-open-file (stream filename) (read stream))) If, for example, I have a file named foo.txt that contains the S-expression (1 2 3), the above function will return that S-expression if called as follows: (load-file "foo.txt"). I've been searching and searching and have not found an equally elegant solution in Clojure. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Controlling the laziest common denominator

    - by bobobobo
This is a programming-related question in that it has to do with combatting the laziest common denominator in a start-up like team. Some devs are driven. They wanna do stuff. They wanna build feature after feature. They wanna do it all. Others are.. lazy. And in every team there's someone who is the laziest. Some lazy people though have an influence on the others.. by their behavior and words, they actually make other people wanna do less. You can't always get rid of these people. But you need to control it. How?

  • Using LINQ to find a common prefix?

    - by Roger Lipscombe
    I've got two sequences: IEnumerable<string> x = new[] { "a", "b", "c" }; IEnumerable<string> y = new[] { "a", "b", "d", "e" }; I'd like to find the common prefix of these two sequences (i.e. "a", "b"). Is there a succinct way to do this in LINQ? Bear in mind that these aren't really IEnumerable<string>; they're IEnumerable<PathComponent>, where I have an implementation of IEqualityComparer<PathComponent>.

  • Lightweight PHP library alternative to common frameworks

    - by artarad
Hi hi, I'm looking for a easy to learn php library to use for my coming web app project. I've recently finished a web app with fully handwritten raw php code and it's absolutely hard to be done again for another project. even though I have the recent project code snippets to be used again, but due to their non-structural arrangement (not object oriented), i have no passion to use 'em again. I have no experience with common frameworks like ZF, CakePhp, CodeIgniter, so I think to get my hands on a multipurpose OO library for my web app and the framework learning will be the next step! any suggestion? UPDATE: Many thanks guys, I have not enough time to get through the depth of every lib or framework you have kindly introduced. Since I'm going one step further I'm going to use ZF as famous framework which could provide me more job opportunities perhaps. thankssss :)

  • Repeating Group Messages in Quickfix C++

    - by Mark Jackson
    We cannot seem to process some group messages with QuickFix. I am trying to set up a connection with the ICE exchange using QuickFix (C++). I have created a custom data dictionary to handle ICE's non-standard messages. The first message to handle is a SecurityDefinition. The message contains about 13000 entries broken into blocks of 100. I attached the message below (the first two entries with CR/LF added for clarity). My question is in the data dictionary, I defined a group as part of the entry with all the fields they specify in the group. Yet the message is rejected before it gets to the cracker as having an invalid tag (tag = 305). Message 2 Rejected: Tag not defined for this message type:305 Does this dictionary entry look correct. Is there any documentation anywhere on how to handle group messages? Dictionary entry <message name='SecurityDefinition' msgcat='app' msgtype='d'> <field name='SecurityResponseID' required='Y' /> <field name='SecurityResponseType' required='Y' /> <field name='SecurityReqID' required='Y' /> <field name='TotNoRelatedSym' required='N' /> <field name='NoRpts' required='N' /> <field name='ListSeqNo' required='N' /> <group name='NoUnderlyings' required='N'> <field name='UnderlyingSymbol' required='N' /> <field name='UnderlyingSecurityID' required='N' /> <field name='UnderlyingSecurityIDSource' required='N' /> <field name='UnderlyingCFICode' required='N' /> <field name='UnderlyingSecurityDesc' required='N' /> <field name='UnderlyingMaturityDate' required='N' /> <field name='UnderlyingContractMultiplier' required='N' /> <field name='IncrementPrice' required='N' /> <field name='IncrementQty' required='N' /> <field name='LotSize' required='N' /> <field name='NumofCycles' required='N' /> <field name='LotSizeMultiplier' required='N' /> <field name='Clearable' required='N' /> <field name='StripId' required='N' /> <field name='StripType' required='N' /> <field name='StripName' required='N' /> <field name='HubId' required='N' /> <field name='HubName' required='N' /> <field name='HubAlias' required='N' /> <field name='UnderlyingUnitOfMeasure' required='N' /> <field name='PriceDenomination' required='N' /> <field name='PriceUnit' required='N' /> <field name='Granularity' required='N' /> <field name='NumOfDecimalPrice' required='N' /> <field name='NumOfDecimalQty' required='N' /> <field name='ProductId' required='N' /> <field name='ProductName' required='N' /> <field name='ProductDescription' required='N' /> <field name='TickValue' required='N' /> <field name='ImpliedType' required='N' /> <field name='PrimaryLegSymbol' required='N' /> <field name='SecondaryLegSymbol' required='N' /> <field name='IncrementStrike' required='N' /> <field name='MinStrike' required='N' /> <field name='MaxStrike' required='N' /> </group> </message> The actual message is 8=FIX.4.49=5004335=d49=ICE34=252=20121017-00:39:41.38556=600357=23322=3924323=4320=1393=1310382=13267=1711=100 311=1705282309=TEB SMG0013-TFL SMG0013305=8463=FXXXXX307=NG Basis Futures Spr - TETCO-ELA/TGP-500L - Feb13542=20130131436=1.09013=0.00059014=2500.09017=25009022=289024=19025=Y916=20130201917=201302289201=11969200=129202=Feb139300=60589301=Texas Eastern Transmission Corp. - East Louisiana Zone/Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. - Zone L, 500 Leg Pool9302=TETCO-ELA/TGP-500L998=MMBtus9100=USD9101=USD / MMBtu9085=daily9083=49084=09061=4909062=NG Basis Futures Spr9063=Natural Gas Basis Futures Spread9032=1.259004=17051939005=1353778 311=1714677309=PGE SQF0014.H0014-SCB SQF0014.H0014305=8463=FXXXXX307=NG Basis Futures Spr - PG&E-Citygate/Socal-Citygate - Q1 14542=20131231436=1.09013=0.00059014=2500.09017=25009022=909024=19025=Y916=20140101917=201403319201=12339200=159202=Q1 149300=59979301=PG&E - Citygate/Socal - Citygate9302=PG&E-Citygate/Socal-Citygate998=MMBtus9100=USD9101=USD / MMBtu9085=daily9083=49084=09061=4909062=NG Basis Futures Spr9063=Natural Gas Basis Futures Spread9032=1.259004=13430529005=1344660

  • git reference common directory/repo

    - by phillee
Project layout: /project_a /shared /project_b /shared /shared project_a and project_b both need to contain the shared folder. With svn, we used svn:externalsand that worked fine, since svn can reference subdirs (with relative paths too). However, we moved to git and it seems to not support checking out subdirs. Our solution now is to put project_a, project_b and shared all in different git repos, and use git submodules in project_a and project_b. However this seems much more complicated than one monolithic svn repo with svn:externals. What's the correct way to handle common elements in git?

  • What are your Common Magento Configuration Mistakes?

    - by Alan Storm
If there's something that everybody hates about Magento it's endlessly configuring your modules before being able to write some code. I'm trying to collect a list of common Magento configuration errors for a future project that's I'm close to launching. I'm looking for specific examples of things like using the wrong naming convention on classnames, forgetting the <class /> wrapper when setting up grouped class names. Little things like that that drive you batty for hours until you realize your error. The more details the better!

  • Where to maintain common information, that could be accessed by all forms

    - by The King
Hi All, This is my first winform app in .NET... I have made a couple of ASP.NET app... In this app, I have some common variables, like current user name, his selected process etc.. etc.. This should be made accessible from all forms in the app at any time... How could I do this... Is there any place like "Session" in ASP.NET here... Further How do coders generally pass information from one form to another... Here I want to pass on the info I acquired in the first form to the subsequent forms... I use constructor overloading and pass the values as parameters... I'm pretty sure there has to be a better way to do it... Thanks for your time...

What programming terms have you coined (or heard) that have taken off in your own circles (i.e. have heard others repeat it)? It might be within your own team, workplace or garnered greater popularity on the Internet. Write your programming term, word or phrase in bold text followed by an explanation, citation and/or usage example so we can use it in appropriate context. Please no repeats of common jargon already ingrained in the programming culture like: "kludge", "automagically", "cruft", etc. (unless you coined it). Stealing from the comments: "A shared vocabulary is the basis of communication, not just among programmers [...]"

  • Rails Nested Attributes, Relationship for Shared or Common Object

    - by SooDesuNe
This has to be a common problem, so I'm surprised that Google didn't turn up more answers. I'm working on a rails app that has several different kinds of entities, those entities by need a relation to a different entity. For example: Address: a Model that stores the details of a street address (this is my shared entity) PersonContact: a Model that includes things like home phone, cell phone and email address. This model needs to have an address associated with it DogContact: Obviously, if you want to contact a dog, you have to go to where it lives. So, PersonContact and DogContact should have foreign keys to Address. Even, though they are really the "owning" object of Address. This would be fine, except that accepts_nested_attributes_for is counting on the foreign key being in Address to work correctly. What's the correct strategy to keep the foreign key in Address, but have PersonContact and DogContact be the owning objects?

  • datepicker common options but different altField altFormat

    - by Legio X
    Using jquery-ui datepicker I would like to use altField and altFormat to 2 datepickers on the same page but I can't figure out how to add these 2 options which are specific to each datepicker along with my common set of options. Code sample below. #dt1 does not work, but #dt2 works. How can I get #dt1 to work while using the datepickerOpts? var datepickerOpts = { minDate: -2, changeMonth: true, changeYear: true, dateFormat: 'yy-mm-dd' }; $('#dt1').datepicker(datepickerOpts, {altField: '#alt1', altFormat: 'mm-dd-yy' }); $('#dt2').datepicker({ minDate: -2, changeMonth: true, changeYear: true, dateFormat: 'yy-mm-dd', altField: '#alt2', altFormat: '@' });

  • Question regarding common class

    - by Rocky Singh
    I have following two classes: public class A : System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button { public virtual string X { get { object obj = ViewState["X"]; if (obj != null) return (string)obj; return null; } set { ViewState["X"] = value; } } protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { X=2; } } and public class B : System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox { public virtual string X { get { object obj = ViewState["X"]; if (obj != null) return (string)obj; return null; } set { ViewState["X"] = value; } } protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { X=2; } } As you must be seeing the class A and B have exactly the same code , my question is how can I make a common class for it and use these two classes.

  • Find common nodes from two linked lists using recursion

    - by Dan
I have to write a method that returns a linked list with all the nodes that are common to two linked lists using recursion, without loops. For example, first list is 2 - 5 - 7 - 10 second list is 2 - 4 - 8 - 10 the list that would be returned is 2 - 10 I am getting nowhere with this.. What I have been think of was to check each value of the first list with each value of the second list recursively but the second list would then be cut by one node everytime and I cannot compare the next value in the first list with the the second list. I hope this makes sense... Can anyone help?

  • Efficient most common suffix algorithm?

    - by taw
I have a few GBs worth of strings, and for every prefix I want to find 10 most common suffixes. Is there an efficient algorithm for that? An obvious solution would be: Store sorted list of <string, count> pairs. Identify by binary search extent for prefix we're searching. Find 10 highest counts in this extent. Possibly precompute it for all short prefixes, so it doesn't ever need to look at large portion of data. I'm not sure if that would actually be efficient at all. Is there a better way I overlooked? Answers must be real time, but it can take as much preprocessing as necessary.
