• Is it possible to produce a small preview or thumbnail image of a Crystal report in code?

- by Lawrence Johnston
I'm using Crystal to display the reports in my project, and I'd like to be able to display a small preview or thumbnail image of the report to the user when he or she is picking a report to display from my UI. Is there any way to produce these thumbnails dynamically from code? The user has the option to add or remove reports by adding or removing them from the reports folder, so just making all the thumbnail images by hand isn't really an option.

• Windows Small Business System 2003. SQL timeout in Server Performance Report

- by tetranz
I'm the volunteer IT admin at a small school. We have SBS 2003 with about ten desktops. The server performance report is emailed to me daily. It is setup with a wizard in the Monitoring and Performance part of the "Server Management" console. It often fails with a "The page cannot be displayed" error. The event log shows Event Type: Error Event Source: ServerStatusReports Event Category: None Event ID: 1 Date: 1/16/2011 Time: 6:03:14 AM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA Description: Server Status Report: URL: http://localhost/monitoring/perf.aspx?reportMode=1&allHours=1 Error Message: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. Stack Trace: at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, TdsParserState state) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, TdsParserState state) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning() at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ReadNetlib(Int32 bytesExpected) [plus lots more stack trace] This has been happening for years :) I've never really solved it. It seems to be related to WSUS. When it happens, I run the Update Services "Server Cleanup Wizard". That takes a long time to run. If I haven't run it for a while it can take 10 hours. I also run the WsusDBMaintenance.sql script (from TechNet I think) which reindexes the database etc. Those two things seem to get it working again for a while. Recently the "while" has become a couple of weeks. My searching online has revealed lots of people having this problem but no real solution. Does anyone have any good ideas about this? I have to wonder if something in the WSUS SQL schema is not indexed properly. The time that the server cleanup wizard takes seems ridiculous. Thanks

• SharePoint 2010 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Installing SSRS 2008 R2 on SharePoint 2010

- by mbridge
What do you need first? Please download SQL Server® 2008 R2 November CTP Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint® Technologies 2010 and please follow this steps: 1. Install a SharePoint technology instance. (Already did this when installing PowerPivot with SharePoint) 2. Install SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP Reporting Services and specify that the report server use SharePoint Integrated mode 3. Configure Reporting Services 4. Download the Reporting Services Add-in by clicking the rsSharePoint.msi link later on this page. To start the installation immediately, click Run After installing Reporting services and the add-in your reporting server is ready to be integrated with SharePoint, in SharePoint 2010 we have some new admin screens. To integrate go to central admin, general application settings: When you successfully installed the add-in a reporting services icon will be there. Click Reporting Services Integration: Add the report server web service url (To get the URL, open the Reporting Services Configuration tool, connect to the report server, and click Web Service URL. Click the URL to verify it works. Copy the URL and paste it into Report Server Web Service URL.), select your authentication mode (windows authentication is prefered). Add a username and password of your admin account. Click ok to configure and start the integration. After the installation you can set the reporting services default. What is changed in SP2010 is that there isn’t a report library available. You have to add content types to a default library. So go to a site collection, site actions, View all site content. Create a Asset library: Now we have to make sure we can add reports to the library. To do this we have to add content types: Open the library, click on library tools, library settings, Under Content Types, click Add from existing site content types. In the Select Content Types section, in Select site content types from, click the arrow to select Reporting Services. In the Available Site Content Types list, click Report Builder, Report Data Source and Report and then click Add to move the selected content type to the Content types to add list. Now we are ready to upload reports and execute them from within our webparts: Another interesting post: - Integrating SharePoint 2010 and SQL 2008 R2

• Linking to BIP reports from BIEE Analyses

- by Tim Dexter
Bryan found a great blog post from Fiston over on the OBIEEStuff blog. It covers the ability to link to a BIP report from a BIEE analyses report with the ability to pass parameters to it. I have doubled checked and you need to be on OBIEE 11.1.1.5 to see the 'Shared Report Link' mentioned in Fiston's post when you open a BIP report from the /analytics side of the house. Enjoy! • Reporting Services print dialog pops up after drill through

- by Craig
Have encountered a problem with in Reporting Services 2005 with printing and drillthrough. If I view a report in Report Manager and then Print the report then I drillthrough from the first report to a second then when I click "back" to go back to the main report the Print dialog pops up. Has anyone else encountered this before? Does anyone know of any workarounds?

• How to solve this nullPointer Exception in jasper report?

- by Kumar
Hi, I am new to jasper report, I need to create pdf document with BeanDatasource and subreport. I refer the following blog " http://knol.google.com/k/jasper-reports-working-with-beans-and-sub-report# " . I followed all the steps perfectly. While i am running the report using IReport i can get the pdf document with the content. But when we try to create from java program i m getting exception in the following line Line number 110: " JasperFillManager.fillReportToFile("C:/JasperReports/contacts.jasper", parameters, new JRBeanCollectionDataSource(TestPerson.getBeanCollection())); " and this is the following error i am getting in my Eclipse Console window . java.lang.NullPointerException at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.JRPropertiesMap.readObject(JRPropertiesMap.java:185) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Unknown Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectStreamClass.invokeReadObject(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readSerialData(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readOrdinaryObject(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject0(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.defaultReadFields(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readSerialData(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readOrdinaryObject(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject0(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readArray(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject0(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.defaultReadFields(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readSerialData(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readOrdinaryObject(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject0(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.defaultReadFields(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readSerialData(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readOrdinaryObject(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject0(Unknown Source) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject(Unknown Source) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.util.JRLoader.loadObject(JRLoader.java:88) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.util.JRLoader.loadObjectFromLocation(JRLoader.java:257) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRFillSubreport.evaluateSubreport(JRFillSubreport.java:308) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRFillSubreport.evaluate(JRFillSubreport.java:257) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRFillElementContainer.evaluate(JRFillElementContainer.java:275) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRFillBand.evaluate(JRFillBand.java:426) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRVerticalFiller.fillColumnBand(JRVerticalFiller.java:1380) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRVerticalFiller.fillDetail(JRVerticalFiller.java:692) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRVerticalFiller.fillReportStart(JRVerticalFiller.java:255) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRVerticalFiller.fillReport(JRVerticalFiller.java:113) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRBaseFiller.fill(JRBaseFiller.java:891) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRBaseFiller.fill(JRBaseFiller.java:814) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRFiller.fillReport(JRFiller.java:89) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.JasperFillManager.fillReport(JasperFillManager.java:601) at test.TestJasperReport.main(TestJasperReport.java:110)

• SQLCMD.EXE generates ugly report. How to format it?

- by Juri Bogdanov
I did batch to run SQL query like use [AxDWH_Central_Reporting] GO EXEC sp_spaceused @updateusage = N'TRUE' GO It displays 2 tables and generates some ugly report with some kind of 'P' unneeded letters... See below Changed database context to 'AxDWH_Central_Reporting'. database_name Pdatabase_size Punallocated space --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------P------------------P------------------ AxDWH_Central_Reporting P10485.69 MB P7436.85 MB reserved Pdata Pindex_size Punused ------------------P------------------P------------------P------------------ 3121176 KB P3111728 KB P7744 KB P1704 KB ---------------------------------------------------------------- I also tryed to generate 1 table from this procedure with next query declare @dbname sysname, @dbsize bigint, @logsize bigint, @reservedpages bigint select @reservedpages = sum(a.total_pages) from sys.partitions p join sys.allocation_units a on p.partition_id = a.container_id left join sys.internal_tables it on p.object_id = it.object_id select @dbsize = sum(convert(bigint,case when status & 64 = 0 then size else 0 end)), @logsize = sum(convert(bigint,case when status & 64 <> 0 then size else 0 end)) from dbo.sysfiles select 'database name' = db_name(), 'database size' = ltrim(str((convert (dec (15,2),@dbsize) + convert (dec (15,2),@logsize)) * 8192 / 1048576,15,2) + ' MB'), 'unallocated space' = ltrim(str((case when @dbsize >= @reservedpages then (convert (dec (15,2),@dbsize) - convert (dec (15,2),@reservedpages)) * 8192 / 1048576 else 0 end),15,2) + ' MB') But got similar ugly report: database name Pdatabase size Punallocated space --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------P------------------P------------------ master P5.75 MB P1.52 MB (1 rows affected) Is it possible to change the layout formatting for report? To make it more beautifull?

• Why is Reporting Services report vastly slower than its query?

- by Telos
I have a query that takes roughly 2 minutes to run. It's not terribly complex in terms of parameters or anything, and the report itself doesn't do any truly extensive processing. Basically just spits the data straight out in a nice format. (Actually one of the reports doesn't format the data at all, just returns a flat table meant to be manipulated in excel.) It's not returning a massive set of data either. Yet the report takes upwards of 30 minutes to run. What could cause this? This is SSRS 2005 against a SQL 2005 database btw. EDIT: OK, I found that with the addition of WITH (NOLOCK) in the report it takes the same time as the query does through SSMS. Why would the query be handled differently if it's coming from reporting services (or visual studio on my local machine) than if coming from SSMS on my local machine? I saw the query running in Activity Monitor a couple times in SLEEP_WAIT mode, but not blocked by anything... EDIT2: The connection string is: Data Source=SERVERNAME;Initial Catalog=DBName

• How do I retrieve an automated report and save it to a database?

- by Mason Wheeler
I've got a web server that will take scripts in Python, PHP or Perl. I don't know much about any of those languages, but of the three, Python seems the least scary. It has a MySql database set up, and I know enough SQL to manage it and write queries for it. I also have a program that I want to add automated error reporting to. Something goes wrong, it sends a bug report to my server. What I don't know how to do is write a Python script that will sit on the web server and, when my program sends in a bug report, do the following: Receive the bug report. Parse it out into sections. Insert it into the database. Have the server send me an email. From what little I understand, this seems like it shouldn't be too difficult if I only knew what I was doing. Could someone point me to a site that explains the basic principles I'd need to create a script like this?

• EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) at random during use of app. Bug in AppKit?

- by Ger Teunis
I'm currently testing a new version of an app of mine on OSX 10.5 An user reported some weird crashes during use of the application, sadly not reproducible by me. At first sight it seems to happen randomly, once he had the crash while opening an NSOpenPanel and once during focusing an NSTextField and once during NSView switch in a parent view. • When I get the Force Close dialog, I have a Report button. Where did it come from?

- by BenTobin
I feel a little bit silly asking this, but I haven't been able to find any answers on my own. My Force Close dialog has a "Report" button. I think it's a great idea, and I wish everyone had it. At first, I thought it must be something I turned on without realizing it, but not only can't I find any setting that I might have touched, I also can't find any reference to this button existing on the Internet. I have a Droid, and I know 4 other people with Droids, and they say they don't have the option to report Force Closes. Am I special? Am I just missing something? The "report" button has been there for at least a few weeks now. When I use the Report button, I get a screen with a "feedback" field and a checkbox for "Include system data". Below that , it says "Information from feedback reports will be shown to the developer of the application." Under that are Preview and Send buttons. As a developer, I've never received one of these reports. I'd try to send a report to myself, but it seemingly only shows the button for apps installed from the market, and I don't know of a way to crash my production app. I suppose I could publish a simple crashing app just to try it out, but I thought I'd ask you folks first. Edit: You can view screenshots here: http://bentobin.com/crashReportImages/

• How do I filter certain javascripts from running and not block them all on Drudge Report?

- by jay
How do I block this particular "auto refresh" script on Drudge Report from running in my Firefox browser? I have NoScript and AdblockPlus plugins installed, but neither of them explain how to filter out a particular script and keep it from running and leave the rest alone. I don't want to stop all javascripts from running just the one listed below. Any help would be appreciated. "var timer = setInterval("autoRefresh()", 1000 * 60 * 3); function autoRefresh(){self.location.reload(true);}"

• AJI Report 14 – Brian Lagunas on XAML and Windows 8

- by Jeff Julian
We sat down with Brian at the Iowa Code Camp to talk about his sessions, WPF, Application Design, and what Infragistics has to offer developers. Infragistics is a huge supporter of regional events like Iowa Code Camp and we want to thank them for their support of the Midwest region. Brian is a sharp guy and it was great to meet him and learn more about what makes him tick. Brian Lagunas is an INETA Community Speaker, co-leader of the Boise .Net Developers User Group (NETDUG), and original author of the Extended WPF Toolkit. He is a multi-recipient of the Microsoft Community Contributor Award and can be found speaking at a variety of user groups and code camps around the nation. Brian currently works at Infragistics as a Product Manager for the award winning NetAdvantage for WPF and Silverlight components. Before geeking out, Brian served his country in the United States Army as an infantryman and later served his local community as a deputy sheriff. Listen to the Show Site: http://brianlagunas.com Twitter: @BrianLagunas

• How to report a bug to developers? A programmers quest to educated on bug reporting.

- by Ryan Detzel
I'm hoping to get some tips and advice on how to educate the rest of the company on how to submit proper bug reports. Currently we get tickets like: When I click this link I get a 404. (They include the page that 404s and not the page that caused it) Sometimes the right column flows into the button column. (no screenshot or additional information) Changes to xxx does seem to be working right. (EOM) Does anyone have a bug submission process/form that guides users into submitting as much information as possible?

• Looking under the hood of SSRS

- by Jim Giercyk
SSRS is a powerful tool, but there is very little available to measure it’s performance or view the SSRS execution log or catalog in detail. Here are a few simple queries that will give you insight to the system that you never had before. ACTIVE REPORTS: Have you ever seen your SQL Server performance take a nose dive due to a long-running report? If the SPID is executing under a generic Report ID, or it is a scheduled job, you may have no way to tell which report is killing your server. Running this query will show you which reports are executing at a given time, and WHO is executing them. USE ReportServerNative SELECT runningjobs.computername, runningjobs.requestname, runningjobs.startdate, users.username, Datediff(s,runningjobs.startdate, Getdate()) / 60 AS 'Active Minutes' FROM runningjobs INNER JOIN users ON runningjobs.userid = users.userid ORDER BY runningjobs.startdate SSRS CATALOG: We have all asked “What was the last thing that changed”, or better yet, “Who in the world did that!”. Here is a query that will show all of the reports in your SSRS catalog, when they were created and changed, and by who. USE ReportServerNative SELECT DISTINCT catalog.PATH, catalog.name, users.username AS [Created By], catalog.creationdate, users_1.username AS [Modified By], catalog.modifieddate FROM catalog INNER JOIN users ON catalog.createdbyid = users.userid INNER JOIN users AS users_1 ON catalog.modifiedbyid = users_1.userid INNER JOIN executionlogstorage ON catalog.itemid = executionlogstorage.reportid WHERE ( catalog.name <> '' ) SSRS EXECUTION LOG: Sometimes we need to know what was happening on the SSRS report server at a given time in the past. This query will help you do just that. You will need to set the timestart and timeend in the WHERE clause to suit your needs. USE ReportServerNative SELECT catalog.name AS report, executionlogstorage.username AS [User], executionlogstorage.timestart, executionlogstorage.timeend, Datediff(mi,e.timestart,e.timeend) AS ‘Time In Minutes', catalog.modifieddate AS [Report Last Modified], users.username FROM catalog (nolock) INNER JOIN executionlogstorage e (nolock) ON catalog.itemid = executionlogstorage.reportid INNER JOIN users (nolock) ON catalog.modifiedbyid = users.userid WHERE executionlogstorage.timestart >= Dateadd(s, -1, '03/31/2012') AND executionlogstorage.timeend <= Dateadd(DAY, 1, '04/02/2012') LONG RUNNING REPORTS: This query will show the longest running reports over a given time period. Note that the “>5” in the WHERE clause sets the report threshold at 5 minutes, so anything that ran less than 5 minutes will not appear in the result set. Adjust the threshold and start/end times to your liking. With this information in hand, you can better optimize your system by tweaking the longest running reports first. USE ReportServerNative SELECT executionlogstorage.instancename, catalog.PATH, catalog.name, executionlogstorage.username, executionlogstorage.timestart, executionlogstorage.timeend, Datediff(mi, e.timestart, e.timeend) AS 'Minutes', executionlogstorage.timedataretrieval, executionlogstorage.timeprocessing, executionlogstorage.timerendering, executionlogstorage.[RowCount], users_1.username AS createdby, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), catalog.creationdate, 101) AS 'Creation Date', users.username AS modifiedby, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), catalog.modifieddate, 101) AS 'Modified Date' FROM executionlogstorage e INNER JOIN catalog ON executionlogstorage.reportid = catalog.itemid INNER JOIN users ON catalog.modifiedbyid = users.userid INNER JOIN users AS users_1 ON catalog.createdbyid = users_1.userid WHERE ( e.timestart > '03/31/2012' ) AND ( e.timestart <= '04/02/2012' ) AND Datediff(mi, e.timestart, e.timeend) > 5 AND catalog.name <> '' ORDER BY 'Minutes' DESC I have used these queries to build SSRS reports that I can refer to quickly, and export to Excel if I need to report or quantify my findings. I encourage you to look at the data in the ReportServerNative database on your report server to understand the queries and create some of your own. For instance, you may want a query to determine which reports are using which shared data sources. Work smarter, not harder!

• Should a link validator report 302 redirects as broken links?

- by Kevin Vermeer
A while ago, sparkfun.com changed their URL structure from /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 to /products/9266 This is nice, right? We don't need to know that it is (or was) a PHP page, and commerce, product_info, and products_id all tell us that we're looking at some products. The latter form seems like a great improvement. However, the change would have broken existing links. So, nicely, they stuck in 302 redirects. Visit http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 and your browser will issue GET /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 HTTP/1.1 to which Sparkfun's servers reply HTTP/1.1 302 Found Location: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9266 This 302 redirect is caught by Stack Exchange's link validator as a broken link. It's not broken it works just fine. Here, try it: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 I understand that a 302 redirect is intended to be a temporary redirect, while a 301 should be used for permanent changes per RFC 2616. That said, Wikipedia and common practice use it as a redirect. Who is in error in this situation? Is this an error in Sparkfun's redirect implementation or in Stack Exchange's URL validator?

• Why does Google report a soft 404 when I redirect to the signup page?

- by Hettomei
In the last month, I've got an increased number of "soft 404" errors reported by Google webmaster tools which actually work well for users. Configuration (maybe useless): I have a website built with rails 3.1 Authentication is handled by the gem Devise Problem: On this page http://en.bemyboat.com/yacht-charter/9965-sailboat-beneteau-oceanis-43 Click on "Ask a Boat request" (a simple form, in GET to: http://en.bemyboat.com/boat_requests/new/9965) You are redirected with the HTTP status 302 to sign in You are then sent back to the new page if successfully sign in. Google tells me that the link on "ask a boat request" returns a soft 404. I can't make this form in "POST" (which will solve the problem) because we need to automatically redirect users back to the page after sign in. (the Gem Devise memorizes the "get" link.) To simplify, the question is: How to protect a private page with authentication, reached with a simple "GET" and not to be penalized by Google as a "soft 404".

• How to make google analytics report on two domains as though they are one site?

- by Ben
We have a main site that Google analytics is currently running fine on (www.ourcompany.com). We have a page that is technically part of the site (same design, etc.) but is hosted on another server/domain for various business reasons (www.ourparentcompany.com/ourcompanyapp/). Do we just add the normal google analytics code to the bottom of that page? Or is there something more we have to do? If there isn't anything more then couldn't anyone just take your GA code and start reporting analytics to your profile from their site?
