  • IIS6 Virtual SMTP server isn't coming back up automatically after a system restart

    I've got a virtual server running Win2008 RC2. I've set up IIS6 with a virtual SMTP server on it to be the mail provider for the websites I'm hosting there. It all works great, but if for some reason the server reboots (auto updates are still enabled - I'm trying to make this as little work as possible as we've got a Lot of clients), the IIS6 doesn't restart the SMTP server. The failure causes 500 errors on the current setup, so I'm spending half the day apologising. Any ideas? In Services I've set everything to come back up automatically, but still no dice. As soon as I restart the SMTP, no problems, all the mail gets sent. It's working perfectly, it just won't restart on it's own. I'd really rather not turn auto updates off as we're such a small company I just can't spare the time to be manually updating 15 copies of windows every time MS decide there's a security patch. All advice appreciated! BTW, I am a complete newb to these forums. I searched but couldn't find an answer, so please be nice. But firm. I've got to learn here.

  • Mixed network, Linux-to-Linux hostname resolution issues

    At work we have an WinSBS domain at the heart of our network, which is all Windows PCs. The domain controller is acting as a DNS for these computers. I have recently added some personal use Linux machines to the network, without joining them to the domain. I have set up Samba with "wins server" pointing to the domain controller, which lets the Windows boxes resolve the Linux hostnames just fine. I also have resolvconf set up with the domain controller as a nameserver and the local domain as a searched domain, which lets the Linux boxes resolve the Windows hostnames just fine. However, the Linux boxes will not resolve other Linux hostnames at all. Given that I don't have control over the DNS server (I am not the network admin) and that at least one of the Linux boxes is not an always-on machine and is likely to change its LAN IP frequently (via DHCP), what service am I missing to make their hostnames visible to each other?

  • Can Excel sorts be saved and used again?

    On an Excel 2007 worksheet, I have several tables, each sharing the same columns. For every table, I sort in several particular ways, depending on the task at hand. It gets tedious going to the Data tab, clicking Sort, unchecking the "my data has headers" checkbox, then add/removing the columns and ordering sort criteria. Is it possible to: * Save a given sort criteria (a named sort)? * Apply the sort against any selected range? * Create a button to execute each saved sort? In the end, I would create 4 or 5 named sorts and a button for each on the worksheet. Then would be able to select any range of rows, from any table, and click one of the sort buttons. The sort would execute.

  • Active Directory Support Folder Redirection AND Portable Home Directories?

    Does anyone here know if Active Directory will support the use of both Windows Folder Redirection and Mac OS X's Portable Home Directories for synchronizing a user's files to a remote share? I want to synchronize my user's files with a remote share as a way of backing up their data. This is fairly straightforward if a user has only a Windows computer or only a Mac computer. However, will Active Directory support a situation in which a user has both types of computers or they have a Mac on which they're running Windows within Parallels? If I configure a remote share via Group Policies for their Windows files and then configure a different share for their Mac files via ADUC, when they change a file on either computer, will AD know which computer the file was changed on and synchronize that file with the appropriate remote folder?   • Media Center setup won't complete for watching TV

    I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. This problem occurs on all channels, live or recorded. The bottom 5th of the screen is solid green. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro to watch TV and there is no skipping/pausing (and not green on bottom). I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing TV okay (with the new DirecTV) before I tried to run setup. (I ran setup to try to do recording with Media Center.) Hardware/Software: Pinnacle PCTV 800i HD PCI card (coax cable from DirecTV tuner), ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, AMD Athlon Dual Core 2.5 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM.

  • Simple issue regarding date formats.

    We are hosting a website that when browsed to locally loads up fine but if you browse to it externally you get Conversion from string "1/15/2010 8:46:01 AM" to type 'Date' is not valid. What do I change on the server to fix this. When browsing the site on the server it works, although I am logged into the server as a different user to that in IIS. Any ideas this is actually starting to cause a head ache now.

  • OSX: sync Documents folder to Dropbox with version control

    I have ample storage in Dropbox to sync my entire OSX Documents folder, and I'd like to this just so that I have it anywhere I go. I found this question, which describes a method for doing this with symlinks. Seems good, the only problem is that it would be nice also to have everything under version control. I thought perhaps a better solution would be to set up my Documents folder as a git repo with a remote that I would push to in my Dropbox folder. Alternatively, just set up Documents as a git repo with no remote and then symlink it to Dropbox. Which of these two alternatives is preferable? What are some pitfalls I might not be thinking of with each? It also has occurred to me that some of the subdirectories of Documents are themselves git repos with github remotes. Would it cause problems for these subdirectories if I made Documents a git repo? If so, how do I get around this? Would making Documents an svn repo instead help? Is there a way to set up git so that this is not an issue?

  • Why can't I route to some sites from my MacBook Pro that I can see from my iPad? [closed]

    I am on M1 Cable (residential) broadband in Singapore. I have an intermittent problem routing to some sites from my MacBook Pro—often Google-related sites (arduino.googlecode.com and ajax.googleapis.com right now, but sometimes even gmail.com.) This prevents StackExchange chat from working, for instance. Funny thing is, my iPad can route to those sites and they're on the same wireless network! I can ping the sites, but not traceroute to them which I find odd. That I can get through via the iPad implies the problem is with the MBP. In any case, calling M1 support is... not helpful. I get the same behaviour when I bypass the Airport Express entirely and plug the MBP directly into the cable modem.   • Redirect local, not internal, requests using SuSEfirewall2 or an iptables rule

    I have a server that is running a web application deployed on Tomcat and is sitting in a test network. We're running SuSE 11 sp1 and have some redirection rules for incoming requests. For example we don't bind port 80 in Tomcat's server.xml file, instead we listen on port 9600 and have a configuration line in SuSEfirewall2 to redirect port 80 to 9640. This is because Tomcat doesn't run as root and can't open up port 80. My web application needs to be able to make requests to port 80 since that is the port it will be using when deployed. What rule can I add so that local requests get redirected by iptables? I tried looking at this question: How do I redirect one port to another on a local computer using iptables? but suggestions there didn't seem to help me. I tried running tcpdump on eth0 and then connecting to my local IP address (not 127.0.0.1, but the actual address) but I didn't see any activity. I did see activity if I connected from an external machine. Then I ran tcmpdump on lo, again tried to connect and this time I saw activity. So this leads me to believe that any requests made to my own IP address locally aren't getting handled by iptables.   • Windows Home Server backup recovery missing driver for USB Device

    I'm doing a backup recovery of a Windows 7 PC from the backup on Windows Home Server. I've done this before and am accustomed to the prompt to load drivers for devices such as the NIC from a USB flash drive, which I have all loaded up with the drivers from the special folder in the WHS backup repository for this PC. My problem on this PC is that one of the drivers the recovery CD complains is missing is "USB Device", and it fails to find the drivers when I click the button to scan for and install drivers. So it seems it can't access the USB flash drive to load the other drivers. Any suggestions? I think my next step is to pull a DVD drive from another system and plug it in with a CD burned with the device drivers.

  • Is Gmail Being Blocked by my ISP (wait till you read this)?

    This is the strangest thing I have ever encountered. I have a desktop on which I cannot access Gmail and also youtube sign in (I believe since youtube is owned by google they both use the same sign in system). So okay, maybe my ISP is blocking these for some reason or maybe my firewall is, or maybe there is something wrong with my connectivity, right? NO. On other computers that uses the same connection via a wireless router I can access both gmail and youtube sign in just fine. On this computer which doesn't have a wireless card and so I have to connect via Ethernet cable (connected to a USB converter since the Ethernet port doesn't work anymore) I can access all sites and services including things like aol and hotmail. But only when it comes to gmail, do I get complete and utter throttling. I even turned off my AV ad Firewall momentarily and no luck. The gmail ages starts to load and by mid point it just stays there loading and loading and loading... never ends. I tried everything, I reset the modem and router multiple times. I reinstalled my operating system from a vista to a windows 7 hoping a complete reinstall would solve the issue, but no luck. So can anyone for the life of them figure out why this could be? And yes, I am going to call my ISP but not to solve this issue, but to cancel them. I want to upgrade to cabel from DSL anyway. I didn't mention my ISP because I'm not sure if that is within the rules (if it's okay some one let me know and I will). P.S. All this happened one day, before gmail was perfectly accessible in this computer. I can't remember anything special that happened on that day prior to this. The only thing I can think of is, my ISP or Google itself is blocking this computer based on it's mac address, but I don't know if that's even done.   • Is there an application I can run that will tell me how fast my computer is running?

    At work I log into a virtual Windows machine. I'm told it runs as fast as a PC, but I'm skeptical. Is there an application I can run on the machine that will tell me how faster the machine is actually running? It would be nice if it ran on Windows and on Mac. Updating with more details -- I was asked "why does it matter" -- here's why: It matters because I'm a programmer and I need as much speed (CPU and memory) as possible to do my work. IMO, the virtual machine is noticeably slower than a basic $800 PC would be, but I need a way a proving it. Websites like Bandwidthtest.com can show me my internet speed, so I'm wondering if there's an app that can test my computer's speed.

  • Why can't I run virtualenv without root?

    I'm trying to run virtual env and all the documentation says I don't need to run it as root (and probably shouldn't). If I run it as root, everything works.   • Google Apps Sync bloated PST file to 14GB

    Back story: I have Outlook connected to my Google Apps email and noticed that some mail never got migrated from my original PST file. I found some VBA code online that compares mail in different PST folders, modified it to find missing and copy those to the target folder. I ran it folder by folder and moved missing mail. Before the exercise the Google Apps PST was about ~4GB and after it was ~4.7GB. Problem: I left Outlook open so Google Sync can copy it online. 24 hours later the Google Apps PST file bloated to 14GB+ and none of the mail has been synced to the cloud. I know that there should be at most ~5GB of mail. Why is the rest of the space being taken up? Funny thing is Gmail shows 3GB as being used online. What I tried: I emptied the deleted items folder and recycling bin I've run Outlook compact PST and it didn't work. I tried SCANPST.exe on the PST and it didn't work. I re-ran compact PST and it didn't work (after SCANPST found and fixed a few errors) Any ideas out there on what caused the problem and how to solve it?

  • Computer won't go into standby

    When I select Start-Turn off computer-Standby the 'turn off computer' option window closes, and then nothing else happens. I can start new applications, and Windows acts like I never selected standby. I ran it for several hours after that. If I have a TV program scheduled to record when I select standby I get a window (the Pinnacle TV software) asking if I'm sure, there are programs scheduled to record - and the computer just keeps running after I select yes, never going into standby. I added that detail as it shows the standby process is starting. [This problem also happens if a TV program is not scheduled, so the scheduler task in not running/in memory. This problem happens regardless of whether I'm not watching TV. This problem happens regardless of whether Media Center is running (it usually isn't, I'm using Pinnacle to watch TV).] I looked at "How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907477 - ACPI is enabled, and "standby" is an option in "Power Options Properties." So it appears to be setup correctly. Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, all current updates installed.

  • Creating an office network and monitoring all activity without a proxy

    We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

  • How important is patch management?

    Problem I'm trying to sell the idea of organizational patch/update management and antivirus management to my superiors. Thus far, my proposition has been met with two responses: We haven't had any issues yet (I would add that we know of) We just don't think it's that big of a risk. Question Are there any resources available that can help me sell this idea? I've been told that 55-85% of all security related issues can be resolved by proper anti-virus and patch/update management but the individual that told me couldn't substantiate the claim. Can it be substantiated? Additional Information 1/5 of our computers (the ones on the building) have Windows update turned on by default and anti-virus installed. 4/5 of our computers are outside corporate and the users currently have full control over anti-virus and Windows updates (I know this is an issue, one step at a time).

  • Google Mini Search Does Not Return Results

    I pointed the Google Mini to a small intranet site. (8 simple HTML pages) It crawls all 8 pages just fine, but a simple search with a word clearing contained within the body of the pages returns 0 results. If I enter a search like this: "site:mysite.net", it returns all 8 pages. If I enter a search with a word contained in a Url, it will return that Url. In the search results, only the Url is returned in the list items. There is no Page Title or blurb text you normally see in Google search results. It's as if it is only indexing the Url and skipping the page title, body, etc. I have an old software Version 3.4.14, but I wanted to try to get this thing working without an upgrade. It worked before for another domain, so why would it not work now. Any ideas?

  • Recover from running "route -f"

    I was trying to capture localhost traffic with Ethereal, which doesn't work without re-routing localhost traffic to your router gateway. I didn't get the route command quite right, and messed up my routing table. I typed route -f to clear the routing table and rebooted, but when I finished rebooting, the routing table wasn't restored to its original state. I didn't use the -p parameter, so none of my changes should have persisted after a reboot. What can I do to restore the routing table to its default routes?

  • Program can't start because GX6050R.dll is missing

    I'm trying to install a program on a Windows 7 machine, but in the end of the installation process, when I press "Finish", I get an error message saying: Actrix.exe - System Error The program can't start because GX6050R.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I have tried reinstalling the program, restarting the computer (before reinstalling) etc., but I can't get this to work. The sites I find when I Google this suggest I download some "Error repair tool" (not happening). Any clues as to how I can fix this?

  • File permissions question

    I just switched my site's server from Windows to Linux, and am finally able to control file permissions from my ftp. So, seeing that all permissions were 705 by default (and not wanting just anyone to have permission to execute), I went and changed everything to 744. Now, gif and jpg links don't work, pdf download links don't work, php links don't load, and mov files don't play. Conversely, all html files work perfectly. Setting things back doesn't seem to help. Even setting to 777 gets me nowhere. Any ideas on what might be going wrong? I've been googling file permissions all day (solved that problem with the Windows-Linux switch, which has bred a new problem), and I don't think anything I can find has escaped my attention. I took up learning php out of interest, and wound up delving into server management issues due to a very simple line of code not working the way it was supposed to. Thanks!

  • install SSH2 (server?) on FreeBSD

    At work we have freeBSD testmachine. And we have a PHP script that uses SSH2 protocol to connect with the freeBSD server. With this script I'm not able to connect to the freeBSD server. I wanted to install it, but I'm not sure where to find the right source to compile. The connection can be made with a different machine, but isntalling a new distro isn't the solution right now. I can connect to the server over ssh, but not with the ssh2 protocol in PHP (http://nl.php.net/ssh2).
