• Database/Web Server and SQL Server Setup - Security?

  This seems really basic, but I couldn't find an answer already ... we are looking to deploy a website to an IIS server, and a database to a separate server. We aren't sure how to best secure this for access by internal users and internet. The IIS Server is not connected to the domain, and neither is the database at the moment. Should it be? Also, if we use SQL Server authentication instead of Windows Authentication, should we just hard-code the user/password into our internal apps?

  I'm using Apache 2 as my load balancer (mod_jk). I've 2 Tomcat servers behind my load balancer. What I'm trying to do is to enable caching of my static pages in my load balancer using mod_cache but nothing seems to be working. I confirmed this by creating a simple JSP page that prints out current date time and I always get the latest date time (indicating that the JSP page is not cached). OS: Ubuntu

  I have 2 Domain Controllers / DNS servers on Windows 2012, their IPs are 10.0.1.10 and 10.0.1.11 Another server acts as the DHCP server for clients, and sets their primary and secondary DNS to the IP addresses of the previously mentioned domain controllers / DNS servers. However I cannot resolve internet domain names, presumably as they are not hosted on the DNS servers. So my question is what do I have to do on my setup to resolve external domains? Thank you!   I'm really new to SQL Agent jobs, but I am attempting to build up a maintainance regime for a server that will be turned off and on again at unknown intervals. It may run without being shutdown for a month, or it might only be turned on 9-5... we don't know and the client can't tell us because they don't know. So what I'm wondering is, what do I need to do to get SQL Server to run monthly and daily jobs either when they are due, or if the due date is missed, get them to be run when the server is next powered on. I could come up with a mish-mash of periodic jobs and 'on-power-up' jobs, but if there is something more elegant that would be wonderful. Obviously I'll need to ensure the SQL Server Agent is configure to start when the computer is powered up, but what else?

• Apache server-status when running as proxy server

  We are running apache as a proxy server and have tomcat behind apache. We are using server_status module but when we try to access server_status as in https://host.com/server-status it redirects to tomcat and we get 404 error. I am quite new to this, tried going through apache docs but unable to figure out the solution.   Have two web servers, development/staging and production. Code and some documentation is moved from the staging area to production either through on-demand jobs or nightly via a global replication job. The production server of course sits isolated in a DMZ. There is some content that gets uploaded to the live server that needs to be replicated back to staging. Our security team is locking the network down (and they should) and restricting access to the live server. Best suggestions for replication of "live" data back to "stage" and backing up the live server also.

As I suppose, I need to set up some kind of load balancer, that would deternime from which country my user is, and resolve it to US/Germany server. The general aim is to provide user abitiliy to work with the closest server (CDN is not a solution, 'cause we dont share static content). Where should I place load balancer that would resolve user to USA/GER severs? In usa/germany? What shold it look like? A usual server with some specific app or what? Thank you.

  I have 2 Exchange 2010 servers each with a Mailbox Database. I have also setup a Hardware Load Balancer (KEMP LoadMaster 2200 to be precise) to load balance the CAS role access. My HLB has an IP of 192.168.1.100. I've setup the DNS A record for mail.mydomain.com to point to 192.168.1.100. However when I try to set the RpcClientAccessServer on a mailbox database using Set-MailboxDatabase "My Mailbox Database" -RpcClientAccessServer mail.mydomain.com I get an error saying Exchange server "mail.mydomain.com" was not found. Please make sure you have typed it correctly. + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], ManagementObjectNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 4082394C Any ideas?

  I am new to handling issues on server. when my system tried to reboot I could see two installables to boot from. windows server 2012- current os windows server secondary plex. So when ever there is a system restart the system it stops at this screen. And since I am connecting to this server using RDP I have to wait for the hetzner console to click on of the os to boot. Even though the current os is set as default and time given is 30 sec, it still waits for a user input. So I want to know which of the two should I be using to boot and I just want one os.

• VMware server 2.0 SYN/ACK repeating issues

  VMWare Server 2.0.0 Build 122956 I am having some issues with connecting into a guest VM (Ubuntu linux 4.4.3-4 lucid) running under VMware 2.0 on a windows server host. All connections to and from the VM's work fine, except for FTP. I thought the issue was the FTP daemon at first but it has been ruled out that it is not the daemon or the server itself. When you try to connect to the FTP server from outside of the host OS it fails with a "421 Service not available" but when you try and connect from the local VM or from the host OS the connection goes through fine. I have ran many packet sniffs using wireshark/tcpdump from the VM, the host OS, and the client connecting, the most informative is the host OS. I have attached a PNG of the relavant packets that were captured. I viewed some other network traffic that was sniffed (WWW specifically) and it seems to do the same syn/ack repeating but the user doesnt see any issues. I have disabled the firewall and the issues persisits, I have tried with specific allow rules to ensure the data is allowed and no changes. It appears like VMware attempts to do the ICMP redirect and it works, but then it vmware repeats the packets sent so you get 3 syn/ack's for every one syn from the client. Also VMWare appears to be attempting to establish an FTP connection between the HOST OS and the GUEST OS, because I see the second SYN sent from the HOST OS to the GUEST to initiate a new connection, and it get the appropriate SYN/ACK followed by an ACK, but the client never sees any of this from its end. EG. syn from client syn/ack from host OS to client syn/ack from guest OS to client syn/ack from host OS to client The same thing happens when the connection reset is attempted, RST's start being sent and repeated, the server responds with a valid header to continue the FTP handshake but the RST acknowledgement is allready issued and things are closed. I am not 100% if this is a bug in VMware or possibly a VMNetwork missconfiguration. Does anyone have any thoughts on where exactly the issue could be, things to try to verify or rule out?   Hi guys, I've got troubles configuring an Hardware load-Balancer with NAT functions. I have the following architecture: Internet === VIP (public) LB (private ip) ==== private addressed servers When a connection is initialised from the outside (internet) , the LB correctly forwards the SYN packet to one of the private servers. But when these servers want to reply with a SYN/ACK there is a problem. the initial SYN packet had as ip header : VIP = Private_server_Address But the private servers cannot reach VIP from their side (this is normal since it's nated), and then provide a correct reply. Have you guys any solution to correctly forward the packets to their correct destination ? Note: The load balancer, which is the default gw for the servers, also has a NAT rule for "masquerading" (actually more SNAT than real masquerading) Regards, Clément.

• Amazon EC2 Web server in Load Balancer gives 503

  we've been running our web servers at Amazon with load balancer and auto-scaling for over a year with no problem. All of a sudden today the request began to get aborted with the error: 503 ... Backend server is at capacity The web servers are at 1% CPU and no other alarms trigger. We use Amazons load balancer and nginx. • Common filesystem for servers behind a rackspace load balancer

  Our PHP application consists of a single web server that will receive files from clients and perform a CPU-intensive analysis on them. Right now, analysis of a single user upload can take 3sec to conclude and take 100% CPU. This makes our system capacity amount to 1/3 requests per second. My team's requirement is to increase capacity without a lot of code reengineering. A possible solution would be to set up a load balancer in front of multiple servers running the same app, connecting to a common DB. The problem is that the analysis outputs files on disk. A load balancer would increase capacity, but then files won't be available between servers so consequent client requests may fail. We are hosted on Rackspace, is there a way to configure some sort of "common" storage for all servers, without having to rewrite our file persistance code? Current code relies on simple fopens etc. What are our options?

  I'm starting to have clients with basic windows server setups. They have data backups, but no real strategy for system backups. I've been looking at cloning software which with linux or images seems easy enough (aside from DC complications, and other things I'm going to ignore until I learn more). What do people do when you have a non-disk hardware failure? I"ve been looking at server migration backup solutions and this one seems to be the cheapest. Anyone tried this? What more do I need to do to safeguard server setups? The hardware on these systems is a little out of date with Server 2003 setup at both businesses. Thanks!

• Server browser resolves localhost, but not server name

  I have a 2008 R2 server that I recently installed Solarwinds on. It is running IIS V7.5. I got the Solarwinds site loaded into IIS, however I can't resolve it when using the server name. It will however resolve when I put http:// localhost into the browser. I have tried editing the Hosts file to no avail. I have also played around with our DNS server to see if I can figure anything out there. I mess with the bindings in IIS, when I remove the binding for "localhosts" it stops resolving. But still get DNS lookup failed if I add the actual server name to the binding. Any ideas?

• Load balanced proxies to avoid an API request limit

  There is a certain API out there which limits the number of requests per day per IP. My plan is to create a bunch of EC2 instances with elastic IPs to sidestep the limitation. I'm familiar with EC2 and am just interested in the configuration of the proxies and a software load balancer. I think I want to run a simple TCP Proxy on each instance and a software load balancer on the machine I will be requesting from. Something that allows the following to return a response from a different IP (round robin, availability, doesn't really matter..) eg. curl http://www.bbc.co.uk -x http://myproxyloadbalancer:port Could anyone recommend a combination of software or even a link to an article that details a pleasing way to pull it off? (My client won't be curl but is proxy aware.. I'll be making the requests from a Ruby script..)

• Windows Server 2008 - Non-Domain users can see my server shares

  Windows Server 2008 - Server Machine Windows 7 Professional - Client Machine I have a domain. It was setup by the client. The shares on the server are restricted correctly when a user logs on to the domain and uses their workstation, I have a few groups setup to restrict some access but the groups are at their core "Domain Users". The problem I am having is that when a user brings in a laptop with Windows 7 Pro on it, they can type up the name of the server in the "Run Dialog" on the start menu like "\SERVERNAME\" and access all of the shares freely... because they are not logged in to the domain there are no restrictions it seems.I have reviewed the permissions on the folders and they all have to be "Domain Users" and I have removed "Everyone" from the list of people able to see it. Guest access is also disabled...What am I doing wrong? Only group in the list is "Domain Users" isn't a domain user a user that is logged in to the domain? How do I stop non-domain users from seeing the shared folder? I noticed this on Windows Server 2003 too at another time. I assume they both had similar security issues and neither were set up by myself so I am not sure what could have been enabled or specifically deactivated that makes this issue appear.

  I'm trying to use Windows Server Backup on my Windows Server 2012 box to backup my Hyper-V VMs. I created a backup job but each job ends with some "Access is denied" errors. One of my VMs (Linux Server) is backed up properly. All others (one Windows 8, one Linux) are not (or at least it seems that way from the looks of the log file below). How can I solve this problem?
