• Change userSettings during MSI installation

  Hi, I am trying to modify the userSettings section (Properties.MyApp.Default) in the MyApp.exe.config file during the installation using an MSI installer. I basically implemented it like in this excellent article: http://raquila.com/software/configure-app-config-application-settings-during-msi-install/ The difference is that I am not editing the appSettings but the userSettings section. The problem is that although the code runs fine, the settings are not saved. After the installation the config file contains the old settings I use in my development environment. I also tried to override OnAfterInstall(System.Collections.IDictionary stateSaver) instead of Install(System.Collections.IDictionary stateSaver) but it doesn't make a difference. It uses restricted APIs, so I obtained a key from RIM and applied it via the Java Development Environment. When I attempt to run on my phone (BB Curve, 8520. OS: 4.6.1), it shows an error saying "'ConstituentC' attempts to access a secure API."   I am using a crystal reports through crystal report viewer server side control in a webform. I am using a webform because the crystal report viewer provides an easy way to export to PDF and to Excel. My problem is that when I deploy to the server, the crystal report .rpt file does not get copied to the target folder. My solution structure looks like this: Solution |-Content |-Controllers |-Models |-Views |-etc... |-Reports |-Default.aspx |-Report.rpt On the server, the Report.rpt file is missing after I publish.

Create a custom site definition with a document library and have the three pages as part of the document library. Is it practical to deploy it behind nginx in production environment? (i.e. nohup tilecache_http_server.py -p 8000 & and then editting the nginx.conf). The VPS we are using has nginx installed already so I thought that would be the easiest for me. However, how practical/efficient is it?

• How can I edit an exe's resources (File Description, Icon, etc.) using a command line utility?

  The whole story: I have created a fancy .NET program which has an installer created by the Visual Studio Installer (VSI). The VSI creates 2 files (setup.exe and MyProgramSetup.msi). I understand the reasons for both files being needed, however, I only want to distribute a SINGLE executable installer to users. I do not want them to see 2 files and have to choose between them. In order to do this I have merged the 2 files into a self-extracting archive using IExpress (as seen in this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/535966/merge-msi-and-exe). This works well, however, the self-extracting archive that gets created has an ugly icon and confusing file info (the File Description is "Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor" with 43 black spaces after it). I need to replace the icon with my custom one and change some of the file properties like "Description", "Company", etc. I would like to have this automatically done as a build step so having a program which is a command line/console utility would be great. I've searched for a while now and can only find one program which does exactly what I want (ResourceTuner Console: http://www.heaventools.com/command-line_resource_editor.htm) but it costs an arm and a leg and my budget is $0. Does anyone know a better way to achieve what I want, or know of a program which can replace an executable's resources without having to use a GUI? By the way, I have also tried "SiComponents Resource Builder 3" which can't even open the executable, and "Julien Audo's ResEdit" which just crashes when I execute the command: "resedit.exe -convert "Modified Resources.rc" "MyProgramSetup.exe"

However, if I change the build action on the resx file to "Embedded Resource", the resources aren't available, even though they're in the DLL that gets built. Is it possible to deploy resources in a DLL, or am I stuck with managing & deploying resx files on the server?

  I am working to rebuild my company's dev/test/QA environment. We have 10-15 programmers that are involved in a number of projects. They currently all develop locally on their PCs and use the dev environment for testing. We currently do not have a QA environment, so deployments are frequently a pain because bugs are usually found after something has gone live. Here's what I envision: Doing away with everyone's local admin privileges and making everyone develop on a dev server Create a QA environment that is identical to our production systems. This will allow them to test deployments. Create a new test environment that is more locked down than the dev server so that proper testing can be done. What are your thoughts? What is the best way to set up an environment like this? We develop ASP .NET applications using MS Visual Studio 2008 (if that helps).

  I have a python source distribution, and it depends on some other modules that I've also made. The directory tree looks like this. I've written a setup.py file for one of those modules (pydirac225, for those of you who are following along at home), and I want to have that setup.py called from the main setup.py? Another module dependency (pysoundtouch14) has a setup.py file, but the contents of it are basically pasted into the main setup.py script. It seems more modular to allow each of these components to specify how they are set up, and allow the main setup file to invoke their setup scripts individually. Is there a standard way to deal with this issue? To recap: I have some code that depends on other modules: should the other module's setup code go in the main setup.py, or is there a way to have my code's setup.py invoke their setup.py files?

• Using git branches for variations of a project

  I'm using git's branching feature to manage 5 variations of a small website. There are 5 versions that will all be live in different subdirectories on production. My approach to checking out the various branches to their respective folders was to: mkdir foo && cd foo git init git remote add origin git@...:project.git git fetch origin foo:foo Where "foo" is a given branch name. This was fine, except for that it pulled my entire repo (designs, as3 source, etc...) into those branch folders instead of just the public www folder, which is the only thing I really want on production. Is there a cleaner way to handle this? Git can't clone subdirectories right?
