  I started learning Java recently. I started learning it using books that I picked up from the library, some that I bought, and here and there from Java documentation. The book that I use for Java was published in the year 2011. In 2012, Java8 will be released followed by Java9 in the year 2013. The questions are: How do I keep myself updated about developments in Java without having to buy a tome for Java8 and/or Java9 Is a book published in 2008 an outdated book for studying JSP and Servelets? • Java is very slow on my laptop

  I have 1.6.0_30 JRE on my 11.10 install. I have 3 GB of RAM and an Intel Core2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz × 2. Whenever I use my Java to play a game, the Java runs at about 4-5 FPS. When I used Windows, I found that I could get around 40 FPS. I'm not too terribly worried about this, but are there settings that I can tweak that I don't know about? If not, why is it that JRE Java can't do as much on Ubuntu as it can on Windows? Also, this may be related but I'm not too sure--My fan runs very fast when running a Java application. Is there a correlation?

• How do I install Java?

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I recently installed openjdk-jre6 because one of the websites I use requires java for me to log in. Unfortunately, even after installing openjdk-jre6, I am not able to use the website. In place of 2 text boxes where I am supposed to enter my username and password, it simply shows a message "click here to download plugin". I am using Firefox by the way. I even tried to install java by clicking on that message. But it says "Java Runtime Environment not available". And then gives me a button to install java manually. But I would rather install it from the repo's. Could someone please tell me, what I should do to get Firefox to take note of the openjdk-jre6 that I have already installed?

• Inheritance vs containment while extending a large legacy project

  I have got a legacy Java project with a lot of code. The code uses MVC pattern and is well structured and well written. It also has a lot of unit tests and it is still actively maintained (bug fixing, minor features adding). Therefore I want to preserve the original structure and code style as much as possible. The new feature I am going to add is a conceptual one, so I have to make my changes all over the code. In order to minimize changes I decided not to extend existing classes but to use containment: class ExistingClass { // .... existing code // my code adding new functionality private ExistingClassExtension extension = new ExistingClassExtension(); public ExistingClassExtension getExtension() {return extension;} } ... // somewhere in code ExistingClass instance = new ExistingClass(); ... // when I need a new functionality instance.getExtension().newMethod1(); All functionality that I am adding is inside a new ExistingClassExtension class. Actually I am adding only these 2 lines to each class that needs to be extended. By doing so I also do not need to instantiate new, extended classes all over the code and I may use existing tests to make sure there is no regression. However my colleagues argue that in this situation doing so isn't a proper OOP approach, and I need to inherit from ExistingClass in order to add a new functionality. What do you think? I am aware of numerous inheritance/containment questions here, but I think my question is different.

• Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 5)

  So, here's the finished product. I have 8 networked Raspberry Pi devices strategically placed around our Oracle Santa Clara Building 21 office. I attached a JFET transistor based EMF sensor on each device to capture any strange fluctuations in the electromagnetic field (which supposedly, paranormal spirits can change as they pass by). And, I have have a Web app (embedded in this page) which can take the readings and show a graphical display in real-time. As you can see, all the Raspberry Pi devices are blinking away green, indicating they are all operational and all sensors are working correctly. But, I don't see anything... Darn... Maybe, I have to stare at the Web app for a while. I don't know when the "alleged" ghosts in our Oracle Santa Clara office are supposed to be active, but let me know if you see anything... • Learning low latency C++ and Java?

  I'm currently in a role where I dont get to write any C++ or Java. However, the role is good because provides me with exposure to the business side (i'm interested in finance). Eventually I would like to get into high frequency trading infrastructure. Therefore, outside of work hours i'd like to maximise the knowledge I can gain about high performance Java and C++. I already have the Java Performance Tuning book, which is ok but not impressive. Can people recommend anymore latency blogs/books/websites for learning about making C++/C/Java or even Unix very fast? Or perhaps making the network parts of the OS (if re-writing Unix components) faster? EDIT: Or perhaps we could make this THE thread for advice on writing fast code

• Maker Faire Report - Teaching Kids Java SE Embedded for Internet of Things (IoT)

  I had a great time at this year's Maker Faire 2014 in San Mateo, Calif. where Jake Kuramoto and the AppsLab crew including Noel Portugal, Anthony Lai, Raymond, and Tony set up a super demo at the DiY table. It was a simple way to learn how Java SE Embedded technology could be used to code the Internet of Things (IoT) devices on the table. The best part of our set-up was seeing the kids sit down and do some coding without all the complexity of a Computer Science course. It was very encouraging to see how interested the kids were when walking them through the programming steps, then seeing their eyes light up when telling them, "You just coded a Java enabled Internet of Things device!" as the Raspberry Pi-connected devices turned on or started to move from their Java Embedded program. See: The AppsLab at Maker Faire It will be interesting to see how this next generation of kids grow up with all these Internet of Things devices around them and watch how they will program them. Hopefully, they will be using Java SE Embedded technology to do so.   This question already has an answer here: Are there any OO-principles that are practically applicable for Javascript? 2 answers I am primarily a Java programmer. Because of its OO principles and the general paradigm of Java programming, like wrapping things in static variables, and having things return specific types, heavily aids me in "visualizing" a program. Instead of thinking of a big program, I can, instead, focus on smaller organized parts of my eventual program, and add functionality and build up from there. Thus, I have trouble programming in other languages. Or at least, I have not been able to program in the same ability as I do in Java compared to other languages. I know Javascript has OO principles, so I'd like to learn this language in a OO-based like I would program with Java. Is this possible?

During the graduation period, i had done C#.net and java as well. Now i am working as Android programmer in a company. In the recent times, i have heard a lot about pros and cons of these platforms. What our seniors used to suggest that, ASP.net is a lot better than JSP for website developement. .net provides us lot of in built tools and API's for building powerfull applications. Java's platform independancy has always been issue among them. Security fetures are more in java. .Net has more powerfull IDE's. Now i am a bit confused on which platform to choose from these. I found java better from two, so did i prefer to choose android. Also, the discussion always ends with an issue that java has no scope for job as far has .net does. I would like to hear suggestions on this topic, but it would be better, if you consider indian IT market for this discussion.

  When handling collision detection / response and you need a Vector class, do you need to create that class yourself or is there a java class you can use? A vector class should have methods like: subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... At the moment it seems logical to use classes like java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? My question is not about how to implement collision detection, I know how that works. However I'm wondering what would be a correct and clean way to implement it in java since I'm fairly new to the language and to application development in general.

  I have a MBP with osx mountain lion installed, and I believe from what I read Mac's only ship with Java 6 by default. I'm not at my computer at the moment, but I am pretty sure I have installed Java 7 but it isn't my default java version (I think I installed it and I have to explicitly reference it to use it). • Can't open Minecraft with java

  I know this has been asked here before, but none of the solutions have worked for me. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my system and I installed Open Java 7 and I downloaded Minecraft. I right clicked Minecraft went to properties and set it as an executable and then went to open with and Java is no where to be found in the list. I made a new Java desktop file in /usr/share/applications and now when I go to the list Java is there and I set Minecraft to open with it by default but when I open it nothing at all happens. Now how am I supposed to get Minecraft to work?

  I've been trying to install the Java plugin for Chrome for a couple hours now, and I figured it was time to ask people with more experience. I can't seem to get it working. My current Java version is the 64-bit OpenJDK 1.6.0_24. I tried installing the IcedTea plugin to no avail. I have Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit installed at the moment. When I tried testing if java was enabled in Chrome, any website with a Java applet would not load (when I disabled the plugin, they loaded, but not the applet). I followed the instructions from here: http://technonstop.com/install-java-plugin-ubuntu-linux which said to create this script and run it: JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0 MOZILLA_HOME=~/.mozilla mkdir $MOZILLA_HOME/plugins ln -s $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so $MOZILLA_HOME/plugins Note: You may need to change the value of JAVA_HOME so that it correctly points to your installation of the JDK. 64-bit users will need to change the final line to: ln -s $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so $MOZILLA_HOME/plugins but this did not work as well. I just test it in Firefox and it's working. Still nothing for Chrome

• NetBeans not liking libraries in lib-src

  I'm working on a project with a group that is using Eclipse, but I'm using Netbeans. Up until today this wasn't an issue. When updating from the repo they have added some source code as a library under a directory called /lib-src. When I try to compile the code I get an error that it can't find certain packages... these are the packages under /lib-src. Using NetBeans I can add the library as a folder so now the references to those packages are happy. Any ideas?
