• Is there a way for Windows 7 to show remaining disk space in the status bar?

  This is really driving me nuts. I do a lot of moving media files to and from USB drives, and I am constantly looking to the status bar to see how much remaining space I have on a drive. It's quick, and doesn't involve any clicking. At least, that's what I used to do using Windows XP. Is there a way to get the status bar in Windows 7 to behave in the same way? I saw in a Wikipedia article that some features have been removed from Windows 7, including these two that seem to be affecting me the most: The size of any selected item and free disk space are not shown on the status bar. When no items are selected in a folder, neither the details pane nor the status bar show the total size of files in the folder. Are there any plug-ins or registry tweaks that can be made to return this functionality? If not what is the quickest way to get the remaining space on a drive without having to click on something and leaving the directory you are working in?

  This silly design of the status bar popping up and disappearing is really bothering me. I used to have a few good extensions on my status bar in Firefox (Pagerank, AdBlock, etc) and now they all have to be placed in strange locations on the toolbars near the top without easily displaying any relevant information. Is there a way I can get the status bar back and use it similarly to FF?

• Why is my code slower using #import "progid:typelib" than using "MFC Class From TypeLib"?

  I am writing an automation client in Visual C++ with MFC. If I right-click on my solution » Add » Class, I have the option to select MFC Class From TypeLib. Selecting this option generates source/header files for all interfaces. This allows me to write code such as: #include "CApplication.h" #include "CDocument.h" // ... connect to automation server ... CApplication *myApp = new CApplication(pDisp); CDocument myDoc = myApp->get_ActiveDocument(); Using this method, my benchmarking function that makes about 12000 automation calls takes 1 second. Meanwhile, the following code: #import "progid:Library.Application" Library::IApplicationPtr myApp; // ... connect to automation server ... Library::IDocumentPtr myDoc = myApp->GetActiveDocument(); takes about 2.4 seconds for the same benchmark. I assume the smart-pointer implementation is slowing me down, but I don't know why. Even worse, I'm not sure how to use #import construct to achieve the speeds that the first method yields. Is this possible? How or why not? Thanks for your time!

If I do not care about whether the resource is newest, will the shared_ptr nowResource crash the program when the nowResource is released or will the problem destroy the shared_point?

I would like to wrap pointers to it into a small class B, some kind of smart pointer, with the constraint that a B* is automatically converted to an A* so that I don't need to rewrite the code that already uses A*.   Hi All, I often find myself implementing a class maintaining some kind of own status property as an enum: I have a Status enum and ONE Status property of Status type. How should I solve this name conflict? public class Car { public enum Status { Off, Starting, Moving }; Status status = Status.Off; public Status Status // <===== Won't compile ===== { get { return status; } set { status = value; DoSomething(); } } } If the Status enum were common to different types, I'd put it outside the class and the problem would be solved. But Status applies to Car only hence it doesn't make sense to declare the enum outside the class. What naming convention do you use in this case? NB: This question was partially debated in comments of an answer of this question. Since it wasn't the main question, it didn't get much visibility. EDIT: Filip Ekberg suggests an IMO excellent workaround for the specific case of 'Status'. Yet I'd be interesting to read about solutions where the name of the enum/property is different, as in Michael Prewecki's answer. EDIT2 (May 2010): My favorite solution is to pluralize the enum type name, as suggested by Chris S. According to MS guidelines, this should be used for flag enums only. But I've come to like it more and more. I now use it for regular enums as well.

• Telling between a "natural" HTTP 404 and a PHP Generated one

  So I have a file that should never be accessed by a user directly, but included in another PHP file. If the file is called directly, it generates a HTTP Status 404 Not Found to trick a possible attacker that such file doesn't exist. However, if the hacker could tell that the 404 was generated by PHP or is not "natural" then the whole point of the header would be lost. So is it possible to tell whether the 404 was generated by the server naturally (because the file really doesn't exist) or by a PHP code? PS: I know this question might seem pretty weird lol

• How to get MVC action to return 404

  I have an action that takes in a string that is used to retrieve some data. If this string results in no data being returned (maybe because it has been deleted), I want to return a 404 and display an error page. I currently just use return a special view that display a friendly error message specific to this action saying that the item was not found. This works fine, but would ideally like to return a 404 status code so search engines know that this content no longer exists and can remove it from the search results. What is the best way to go about this? Is it as simple as setting Response.StatusCode = 404?

  It's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with Ethernet, and the exact same problem : no internet, even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. I'm a total beginner with Ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to explain my issue. English is not my mother tongue. For 2 weeks, I've been doing reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few, but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files. E.g.: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm concerned that I might put figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1? I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number?) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

You do not need to do anything special in order to follow 302 responses." This seems to work fine when I simply use the get() or post() methods without a closure. However, when I use a closure, I seem to lose 302 handling. Is there some way I can handle this myself? Thank you p.s.   Hi, First of all, quickly what exactly I want to achieve: translate particular exception into the HTTP 404 so the ASP.NET can handle it further. When it is on then it never redirects to the page specified in customErrors: <error statusCode="404" redirect="404.html"/>. I also tried to raise new HttpExcepton(404, "Not Found") from the handler but then the response code is 200 which I don't understand why. So the questions are: What is the proper way of translating AnException into HTTP 404 response? How does customErrors section work when handling exceptions in Application_Error? • Turning off ASP.Net WebForms authentication for one sub-directory

  I have a large enterprise application containing both WebForms and MVC pages. It has existing authentication and authorisation settings that I don't want to change. The WebForms authentication is configured in the web.config: <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms blah... blah... blah /> </authentication> <authorization> <deny users="?" /> </authorization> Fairly standard so far. I have a REST service that is part of this big application and I want to use HTTP authentication instead for this one service. So, when a user attempts to get JSON data from the REST service it returns an HTTP 401 status and a WWW-Authenticate header. If they respond with a correctly formed HTTP Authorization response it lets them in. The problem is that WebForms overrides this at a low level - if you return 401 (Unauthorised) it overrides that with a 302 (redirection to login page). That's fine in the browser but useless for a REST service. I want to turn off the authentication setting in the web.config: <location path="rest"> <system.web> <authentication mode="None" /> <authorization><allow users="?" /></authorization> </system.web> </location> The authorisation bit works fine, but when I try to change the authentication I get an exception: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. I'm configuring this at application level though - it's in the root web.config How do I override the authentication so that all of the rest of the site uses WebForms authentication and this one directory uses none? This is similar to another question: 401 response code for json requests with ASP.NET MVC, but I'm not looking for the same solution - I don't want to just remove the WebForms authentication and add new custom code globally, there's far to much risk and work involved. I want to change just the one directory in configuration.

• How to refactor this database to allow sync. with smart clients?

  Howdy, I have inherited the following database: http://i46.tinypic.com/einvjr.png (EDIT: I cannot post images, so here goes the link) This currently runs 100% online thru an Asp.Net web app , but some employees will need to have offline access to this database to either get documents or to insert new documents for later synchronization when back to the office. What changes need to be made to this database scheme to support such scenario (sync smart clients with central web database)? Thanks! ps. I'm not an developer/dba, i'm just an mechanic engineer tasked with changing this app, so, take it easy on me :D ps1. We're using MSSQL Server for the online central database and MSSQL Compact for the smart client. ps2. the ImageGuid field of the images table is used to save the images to the file system. The web app takes the guid and create folders according to the first 3 initial letters to persist the image to the file system. ps3. The users of the smart client not always get server data first and then go modifying to sync later the changes. Most of the time they start working completely offline (with a blank local database) and later sync the data to the server. ps4. All the users of the smart client app have an account at the web app.

I've generated few files with 150kB size each to test the crawler. So I think the 20+ responses are limited by the bandwidth? • Failing Sata HDD

  I think my HDD is fried... Could someone confirm or help me restore it? I was using Hardware RAID 1 Configuration [2 x 160GB SATA HDD] on a CentOS 4 Installation. All of a sudden I started seeing bad sectors on the second HDD which stopped being mirrored.   I have a running ubuntu server 10.04.1. When I tried to login to the server via ssh, I could not. Instead, I got connection refused error. I tried to ping the machine and I got reply! So, the clear reason is that SSH daemon is stopped. After reboot, I was able to login to my server via ssh. Some people said that this is caused by the SSH daemon trying to start before networking and they suggest to change ListenAddress in /etc/ssh/sshd_config to be 0.0.0.0. I think this is not the cause in my case, because my problem occurs after system is up and running. Any idea what is causing this? This is ubuntu server and it should be running and accessed remotely using ssh.
