• iptables allow dyndns domain name and auto update rules

  I have registered with dyndns domain for my dynamically changing public ip address to use with iptable rules. On a server I've allowed some ports for this domain in the iptables configuration like the below entries: -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT But when ever my modem restarts, I couldn't connect to these allowed ports as public ip changes with modem restart and are not updated in the iptables on the server. Is there any option to automatically update iptable rules on server.

• MCollective alternative?

  I really want to run MCollective on my fleet of servers however there are a large number of untrusted users on each machine which makes using MCollective not ideal in my eyes. I'm aware that there is some things you can do to take precaution but I'm not familiar enough with ActiveMQ / want something that's a bit more mindful of similar environments to mine outside the box. I'm looking for a fact collection like tool essentially. (Tagging under puppet / server since no mcollective tag and I don't have enough reputation to create a new one)

  I found this linux distribution, called SmoothWall. I read its documentation and it looks pretty for me. The only problem is, that I'm not a big linux professional and I have also not a lot of experience but I want to know your thoughts about this "Firewall OS"!   Hi, normally i connect to my sql server instance from my local computer, and then the server name to connect to is the name of my laptop. So i can connect to server instance 'MichelLaptop' But now i'm trying to connect to my server from outside my network, and the first thing i wonder is: what is the name of the instance? i've made a redirect to my local machine in the DNS of my domain, so i said (this is not the real data) testsql.mydomain.com goes to 190.191.192.193 and when i ping testsql.mydomain.com, i get a response from 190.191.192.193 But what then is the server name?

Sometimes I need to sync very large things, and I don't necessarily want to pay for storage space on someone else's server when I have my own. • Trick Ubuntu into resolving a domain name locally

  I have an Ubuntu box that I use for all sorts of things. One thing I really want to do is redirect a sub domain to a local script. For example thisbit.example.com should actually show the content from localhost/~USER/FAKE.thisbit.example.com/ which is a folder that Apache is running for me which contains a very simple PHP script which implements an offline version of a server script that I am testing against. But example.com should continue to behave normally as should notthisbit.example.com etc. Ideally I need to be able to switch from testing to live with minimal fuss when the time comes.

• Apache returns 403 Forbidden for alternative port vhost

  I'm having an issue getting vhosts to work on Apache 2.2, Debian 6. I have two VirtualHosts, one on port 80 and one on port 8888. The port 80 one has been created automatically by DirectAdmin, the 8888 is a custom one. It's configuration is as follows. <VirtualHost *:8888 > DocumentRoot /home/user/public_html/development ServerName www.myserver.nl ServerAlias myserver.nl <Directory "/home/user/public_html/development"> Options +Indexes +FollowSymLinks +MultiViews AllowOverride All Order Allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> Of course I also have a NameVirtualHost *:8888 The port 80 DocumentRoot is /home/user/public_html/production, which is perfectly accessible and works like a charm. The port 8888 docroot of /home/user/public_html/development is 403 forbidden though. I have compared the permissions for both folders. [Sat Aug 18 04:35:09 2012] [error] [client 27.32.156.232] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user/public_html /home/user/public_html is a symbolic link that refers to /home/user/domains/mydomain/public_html. The symbolic link has the following permissions: lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 29 Aug 17 15:56 public_html -> ./domains/mydomain/public_html I'm at a loss. It seems that everything is readable or executable. I've set the Directory to FollowSymLinks in the httpd.conf file, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. If I change that directory tag to <Directory "/home/admin/public_html"> (so it has FollowSymLinks on that as well) it still does not work. Any help is greatly appreciated. If I need to post more information, let me know. I'm pretty much a beginner at this stuff. .. .. UPDATE: I ended up changing the configuration to directly go to the actual path of the files, avoiding the public_html symlink altogether. That worked. Thanks for the suggestions folks. DocumentRoot /home/user/domains/mydomain/public_html/development instead of DocumentRoot /home/user/public_html/development

  I have used Visio to map out my network structure, and have used the export function to create an HTML page that is searchable by IP, hostname etc. This is a really nice tool and I use it often. However, I would like for users who do not use Internet Explorer to be able to use the search features. What are some alternatives to Visio here? However, the user name and email is taken from the client's Git configuration ('git config user.name' etc.), which can be set to arbitrary values. Is there any way to associate user names and emails with their public keys and then make Gitosis uses these names and emails as the name and email of the committer?

• HP/IBM alternative to Buffalo iSCSI TerraStation?

  I'm looking at virtualising some of our infrastructure in order to allow for more resiliance and future expandability. We have successfully virtualised on single servers with Direct Attached Storage and are now looking for a more future proof solution using a high powered host (or two) and a SAN (or two). I'm thinking that the host machine will probably be an HP ProLiant DL360 G7 (all of our exisiting infrastructure is HP). Unfortunately, I am new to the world of SANs. From what I can see, the Buffalo Terrastation III is all I would need in order to setup an iSCSI SAN for VMWare to use. However, I'm a little reticent to go that way as it's a bit too "entry level" for my liking. In particular I would be very keen for more redundancy, power, networking, etc. I'm also very aware that you "get what you pay for". Therefore, can anyone reccommend equivalents from the big boys? HP/IBM? I have searched high and low on the HP site and seen many options but am struggling to work out if it is all the hardware I will need. Some options appear to need separate controllers from disk enclosures, etc.

  Does anyone know of any self-hosted Dropbox alternatives? We have a need to share files/folders between staff and partners (small scale) and for various reasons we'd prefer to host it ourselves. Sharepoint seems a little too focussed on "check in/check out" and things like webdav/ftp seem a little kludgy. In an ideal world something where you (as an IT person) can setup an area, make a user "owner" and from there they can add their customers would be great. Windows or Virtual Appliance would be ideal.

I have the domain example.net, which redirects to example.com/myWebsite. The point, however, that right now when somebody accesses example.net they are redirected to example.com/myWebsite and consequently to example.com/myWebsite/dirA, example.com/myWebsite/dirB etc.. I am now thinking about upgrading my account so that example.net no longer redirects to example.com - I was however wondering, however, since Google shows results searches in terms of example.com/myWebsite, how would this affect my rankings?

  Hello i have been working on a part of my plugin that has waypoints allowing the user to create delete etc. I got to thinking after using and seeing a couple of the disguse plugins. That maybe i could create a command toggle that would show the user where the waypoints they have are! I know how to do all of this i just have no idea how to display a nameplate to the client. I know its possible because disguisecraft does it i tried looking though their code but couldent find much... I belive to get this effect i need to send packets to the client if someone can direct me to a list of bukkit packets or even a solution to sending the client a custom located nameplate that would be fantastic! • How can I redirect all files in a directory that doesn't conform to a certain filename structure?

  I have a website where a previous developer had updated several webpages. The issue is that the developer had made each new webpage with new filenames, and deleted the old filenames. I've worked with .htaccess redirects for a few months now, and have some understanding of the usage, however, I am stumped with this task. The old pages were named like so: www.domain.tld/subdir/file.html The new pages are named: www.domain.tld/subdir/file-new-name.html The first word of all new files is the exact name of the old file, and all new files have the same last 2 words. www.domain.tld/subdir/file1-new-name.html www.domain.tld/subdir/file2-new-name.html www.domain.tld/subdir/file3-new-name.html ect. We also need to be able to access the url: www.domain.tld/subdir/ The new files have been indexed by google (the old urls cause 404s, and need redirected to the new so that google will be friendly), and the client wants to keep the new filenames as they are more descriptive. I've attempted to redirect it in many different ways without success, but I'll show the one that stumps me the most RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} !^subdir/.*\-new\-name\.html RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} !^subdir/$ RewriteRule ^subdir/(.*)\.html$ http://www.domain.tld/subdir/$1\-new\-name\.html [R=301,NC] When visiting www.domain.tld/subdir/file1.html in the browser, this causes a 403 Forbidden error with a url like so: www.domain.tld/subdir/file1-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name.html I'm certain it's probably something simple that I'm overlooking, can someone please help me get a proper redirect?
