  • Unix users and permissions and how they interact with web files.

    Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

  • Deployment and Ownership issues

    As an extreme newbie, I am having difficulty managing ownership and permissions on my first box. What I can't figure out is how to deploy using one user, we will call him deploy and operate my php application with www-data user. Currently as it stands, I know my server runs as www-data through this function <?php echo(exec("whoami")); ?> but I am having to chown between deploy and www-data every time I deploy. There has got to be an easier way to deploy with one user and still run as www-data. EDIT: Here is the output from ls- l on the folder in question. You will see user deploy and group www-pub, the group is from an attempt to add the two different users to a new group and chown one of them in the hopes that they both would have the permissions (newb alert) drwxrwxr-x 4 deploy www-pub 4096 Mar 7 01:41 example.com I am using capistrano for deployment under the user deploy then once its done i chown to www-data, otherwise I can't use php to manipulate files. I am also unsure how to even change which user apache is running.

    Hello, guys, I need to get and filter the linux users list like: username1 username1_group username2 username2_group ... usernameN usernameN_group I've tried, but only that I've found is: cat /etc/passwd | grep /home | cut -d: -f1 It gives me the list of users in /home folder.   • Jail Linux user to directory for FTP login

    I'm planning on using vsftpd to act as a secure ftp server, but I am having difficulty controlling the linux users that will be used as ftp logins. The users are required to be "jailed" into a specific directory (and subdirectories) and have full read/write access. Requirements: - User account "admin_ftp" should be jailed to /var/www directory. - Other accounts will be added as needed, for each site... e.g: - User account "picturegallery_ftp" should be jailed to /var/www/picturegallery.com directory. I have tried the following, but to no avail: # Group to store all ftp accounts in. groupadd ftp_accounts # Group for single user, with the same name as the username. groupadd admin_ftp useradd -g admin_ftp -G ftp_accounts admin_ftp chgrp -R ftp_accounts /var/www chmod -R g+w /var/www When I log into FTP using account admin_ftp, I am given the error message: 500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/admin_ftp But didn't I specify the home directory? Extra internets for a guide how to do this specifically for vsftpd :)

    So I was asked to set up an Exchange Activesync mobile gateway. That's done. It's a separat eExchange 2003 front-end server configured for SSL, and I've put an off-domain ISA server in front of it. Now I'm being asked to limit which users can connect to it. By default an Exchange front-end server allows any user who has a mail account to connect to the front -end server. So I'm looking at the permissions on the various IIS sites/apps on the server, but I know that it's easy to break Exchange Front-end server perms. So I've got the following in IIS: Exadmin Exchange EchWeb Microsoft-SErver-ActiveSync MobileAdmin OMA And a couple of others that I dont think are relevant. Can I change the permissions on one of these to restrict who can connect to Activesync? As a bonus: Can I do it in a way that does not affect ordinary browser based Exchange Access?   • How to delete folder of owner/group 99 99

    I am using wordpress with wp-super-cache plugin. This plugin automatically created a cache folder in my site for storing the cached files. But unusually it created folder with owner/group 99 99. It was created automatically. Due to this, i am not able to delete that folder or change the CHMOD of that folder. This really a headache. I searched google, but none gave me a good answer. Please help me delete or change the CHMOD of that folder ? I am on Linux server.

  • On Windows Server 2003, permissions are not propagating to a group that is a member of a group

    Windows Server 2003 on i386. FTP server is running as the SYSTEM user/group. Some files we want served (read and write) are owned by the group 'ftp.' ftp has full read/write/whatever permissions on those files and directories. SYSTEM can't read/write those directories. So, I added SYSTEM to the 'ftp' group. Windows happily complied, but even after restarting Filezilla, it still could not read/write those files. Is there any way to do what we want without "re-permissioning" all those files? Running the ftp server as 'ftp' isn't really an option because it also serves files that are owned by SYSTEM (And not ftp). Sigh... :) Any insights?

  • SQuirreL Client: Opening up a table in a separate tab

    I've switched to SQuirrel Client to view an Oracle database with a variety of tables. At any given time, I need to look at the contents of several related tables at the same time. The problem is that, at least by default, SQuirrel Client does not open up multiple tables at a time. When you click on a different Table object, the main view is refreshed with newly selected table data. Oracle's SQLDeveloper (which I am trying to move away from) did this by default if I recall, but there was an option to "freeze" panes. Does a similar option exist in SQuirrel Client? I do not require the ability to view the contents of two different tables on the same screen (i.e. a split view) but I would like the ability to have tabs for each table so I can quickly switch between each table view rather then having to find the table in the table list over and over again. Note: I am using this in a professional capacity but if it does not "belong" here then I suppose it could be moved to superuser.

  • Redundant APC UPS units, single server set up

    Hi All We have a very simple set up, looking for a very simple (reliable) solution: Setup: One Dell box with redundant power supplies running Windows 2003, plugged into two separate APC SmartUPS 1500 units (USB, no smart cards) on two separate circuits. Solution required: IF (UPS1 = Low) AND (UPS2 = Low) THEN: Shutdown gracefully ELSE: DO NOTHING!! APCUPSD only allowes for one instance (and therefore one UPS) in a windows environment. PowerChute can't do this without using APC Smart Cards which means utilizing our switch, but the switch does not have redundant power supplies, so it will only live for as long as one of the two UPS units. And no, i don't have the budget to buy two smart cards pluse a switch with redundancy ;) Thanks

  • Is a reboot required to refresh permissions after adding a user to a new group?

    On ubuntu server, I've noticed more than once now that after adding a user to a group that user doesn't have group permissions until I reboot the system. For example: User 'hudson' needs permission to read directory 'root:shadow /etc/shadow' So I add hudson to the shadow group. hudson still cannot read. So, I 'sudo shutdown -h -r now' and when the system comes up again user hudson can read. Is a reboot required or is there a better way to get permissions applied after adding the user to the group?

  • Accessing a shared folder in Windows Server 2008 R2.

    Hello all, seems my involvement with computers has grown and I've found my self in the need to access a shared folder on a server. I've read some documentation and managed to set up the folder as a share, for this I created a local group and for now just one local user that has access to the share, the folder is in the public user folder and it's permissions should be (and I believe they are) read/write. The problem is that I can't connect from a remote machine I mean I don't know how the way it should be accessed, the server has a public IP and we use it also as a host to our website I don't know if that affects it though, the folder will be used as the "keeper" for the QuickBooks company files and has the database server manager installed. I've tried setting up a VPN Connection to the but no success. The server has a domain name a "http://www.example.com" that redirects to our website, I am unsure if it could be accessed that way, also the share has a location displayed when I right-click properties Heres what I've tried Setting up a VPN Connection (Windows Vista and 7) Got to the point where I got asked for credential and entered the user I created (which is not an admin) but I got a "Connection fail error 800" I suppose this is because in the domain field I entered the servers workgroup. right-click add network connection (Windows 7) Went through the wizard until I reached the point of entering the location, tried many things, the name in the share's properties(\\SOMETHING\Share), the http://www.example.com , the IP address I'm quite unfamiliar with this, so I have my guesses: Since the group and user are local they do not have access to the folder. The firewall in the server is blocking my connection. Anyways, any help and guidence is truly appreciated.

  • Can I group rows to get sum using excel

    I have a spreadsheet with 2 cols of importance. Date, and number. I can't always predict the number of rows or the date, but what I would like to do is print out the sum of the numbers for each date. For example, there might be 5 rows for Dec-7: 200, 111 and Dec-6: 222,533,100. I am tying to create a list which would show Dec-6: 855, Dec-7: 311. I believe a Pivot Table is what I want but I can't quite figure out how I need to configure it to show what I want. If anyone knows of a guide I could look at that would be fantastic!

  • Can't see any entries on "File Types" tab on Windows 7's Desktop Search

    For some reason, Windows Desktop Search (included with Windows 7.0) now no longer shows any file types on the "Advanced Options" dialog box. Any ideas on how to fix this? WDS claims to be indexing...but I'm not sure what it's actually indexing right now. I should also add that when I try to add a file type, nothing shows up or is ever actually added. If I login as a different user on the same system, everything appears normally.

If such a thing doesn't exist, please don't hestitate to say so, so I can crawl to a corner and cry myself to sleep. TIA

Would someone running a Jira server be able to give me a basic rundown of the most efficient way to setup company projects (where a group of people will be working on the project), and a personal project (where only myself, and perhaps one other person will be working on the project)?   • Allow members of a group to be unlocked by a specific account on AD

    Background I'm creating a service to allow support staff to enable their firecall accounts out of hours (i.e. if there's an issue in the night and we can't get hold of someone with admin rights, another member of the support team can enable their personal firecall account on AD, which has previously been setup with admin rights). This service also logs a reason for the change, alerts key people, and a bunch of other bits to ensure that this change of access is audited / so we can ensure these temporary admin rights are used in the proper way. To do this I need the service account which my service runs under to have permissions to enable users on active directory. Ideally I'd like to lock this down so that the service account can only enable/disable users in a particular AD security group. Question How do you grant access to an account to enable/disable users who are members of a particular security group in AD? Backup Question If it's not possible to do this by security group, is there a suitable alternative? i.e. could it be done by OU, or would it be best to write a script to loop through all members of the security group and update the permissions on the objects (firecall accounts) themselves?   • Altering the Windows 7 grouping thumbnail preview

    I like the windows 7 grouping behaviour for multiple similar windows, except when I have multiple Explorer windows open. In this case, showing thumbnails of each open explorer window is next to useless, and I would like to know how to either: Disable thumbnail display completely (but preserve the grouping behaviour) Disable thumbnail display for a subset of programs (all explorer.exe instances) Change the number of similar programs that are open before the grouping behaviour falls back on a more sensible text preview when hovering over the taskbar icon (currently 14 or over) I don't particularly want to disable any other features of windows to get this behaviour, so disabling the theme compleletely isn't what I want to do. I definitely want to keep the grouping behaviour. Its just those thumbnail previews I would like to alter.   • How can i lock images to a cell in excel 2010

    Ok, so i am using microsoft excel 2010 and have a set up currently where i have 2 views expanded and deflated using the Group or +/- function. My problem is that ui have images on the workbook too. The images are over the cells which are to be "hidden" when the - button is pressed and i would like the images to disappear with them. This is not curently happening instead they are moving to the next visible cell. I have included an example below incase i wasn't clear. I wish to hide Columns M:AU and the images are in various cells suchas N5 and O5. When i colapse (hide) the column range all of the images move to "AV5" the next row along that isn't hidden. This means the workbooks is looking messy when colapsed which is the oposite of what i was trying to do. Can anyone advise on a way around this?

  • Opening up a link in a new tab in Firefox doesn't show address

    Sometimes for some reason, connection to a new link/address takes a long time to establish. In Firefox 11.0, the address bar will keep showing "about:blank". I take this as normal, and let me know if it isn't. If the connection is stopped for some reason, I will not be able to find out the address that I was trying to connect to. I wonder how to find out that address, both before and after the connection is stopped at "about:blank"? Thanks and regards!
