  • DB Interface Design Optimization: Is it better to optimise for Fewer requests of smaller data size?

    - by Overflow
    The prevailing wisdom in webservices/web requests in general is to design your api such that you use as few requests as possible, and that each request returns therefore as much data as is needed In database design, the accepted wisdom is to design your queries to minimise size over the network, as opposed to minimizing the number of queries. They are both remote calls, so what gives?

  • How to pass Remote Interface (aidl) throughout Activities ?

    - by Spredzy
    Hi All, I am developing an application using services and Remote interface. I have a question about passing the reference of my Remote interface throughout Activities. In my first Activity, I bind my service with my activity, in order to get a reference to my interface I use private ServiceConnection mConnection = new ServiceConnection() { @Override public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName arg0, IBinder service) { x = X.Stub.asInterface(service); } @Override public void onServiceDisconnected(ComponentName arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } }; x being the reference to my interface. Now I would like to access this interface from another activity, I see two ways to do it but I don't know which one is the "proper" way to do it : passing x with my intent when I call the new Activity redo this.bindService(new Intent(y.this,z.class), mConnection, Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE); in the onCreate() of my new Activity What would you advice me to do ?

  • Best Practice for CouchDB Document Versioning

    - by Groundwater
    Following my question here I am exmploring ideas for a generic approach to document versioning in CouchDB. While I imagine there may be no canonical approach, I had the following idea and am looking for feedback. I would like to maintain readable document ids as much as possible, so a document existing at /document1 would contain a pointer document to all existing versions on the system. The actual revision documents would be at something like /document1/308ef032a3801a where 308ef032a3801a is some random number or hash. Example The pointer document { "_id" : "document1", "versions" : [ "document1/308ef032a3801a" ] } The version document { "_id" : "document1/308ef032a3801a", ... actual content }

  • C#: Specify that a function arg must inhert from one class, and implement an interface?

    - by Rosarch
    I'm making a game where each Actor is represented by a GameObjectController. Game Objects that can partake in combat implement ICombatant. How can I specify that arguments to a combat function must inherit from GameObjectController and implement ICombatant? Or does this indicate that my code is structured poorly? public void ComputeAttackUpdate(ICombatant attacker, AttackType attackType, ICombatant victim) In the above code, I want attacker and victim to inherit from GameObjectController and implement ICombatant. Is this syntactically possible?

  • Define pointcut to capture an interface but not parent or sub interfaces

    - by mR_fr0g
    I was wondering how to define a pointcut in aspecJ the captures any method of an interface but not the methods of any parent or sub interface. pubic interface A { void methodA(); } pubic interface B extends A { void methodB(); } pubic interface C extends B { void methodC(); } I would like a poincut that only catches methodB() and not methodA() or methodC(). Is there any way i can do this in a general way without listing all the sub and super interfaces in the pointcut?

  • Google Rolls Out a New and Compact Navigation Bar

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    Earlier this spring Google introduced the black navigation bar; now they’ve updated the bar to take up less space and be more useful. Although the black bar is useful in-so-far as it gives you quick access to Google services (useful, of course, only if you use those services) the new navigation bar–seen in the video above–includes an improved layout. Rather than use the bar space to spread out links which the user may or may not use the service links are now tucked into a mouse-over menu accessed by hovering on the Google logo. The majority of the space previously just taken up by links and the black bar itself is now a a search box. If you don’t already see the new interface, look for it to appear in your Google account within the next few days. Hit up the link below to read the official announcement. • Testing for interface implementation in WCF/SOA

    - by rabidpebble
    I have a reporting service that implements a number of reports. Each report requires certain parameters. Groups of logically related parameters are placed in an interface, which the report then implements: [ServiceContract] [ServiceKnownType(typeof(ExampleReport))] public interface IService1 { [OperationContract] void Process(IReport report); } public interface IReport { string PrintedBy { get; set; } } public interface IApplicableDateRangeParameter { DateTime StartDate { get; set; } DateTime EndDate { get; set; } } [DataContract] public abstract class Report : IReport { [DataMember] public string PrintedBy { get; set; } } [DataContract] public class ExampleReport : Report, IApplicableDateRangeParameter { [DataMember] public DateTime StartDate { get; set; } [DataMember] public DateTime EndDate { get; set; } } The problem is that the WCF DataContractSerializer does not expose these interfaces in my client library, thus I can't write the generic report generating front-end that I plan to. Can WCF expose these interfaces, or is this a limitation of the serializer? If the latter case, then what is the canonical approach to this OO pattern? I've looked into NetDataContractSerializer but it doesn't seem to be an officially supported implementation (which means it's not an option in my project). Currently I've resigned myself to including the interfaces in a library that is common between the service and the client application, but this seems like an unnecessary extra dependency to me. Surely there is a more straightforward way to do this? I was under the impression that WCF was supposed to replace .NET remoting; checking if an object implements an interface seems to be one of the most basic features required of a remoting interface?

  • Cast object to interface when created via reflection

    - by Al
    I'm trying some stuff out in Android and I'm stuck at when trying to cast a class in another .apk to my interface. I have the interface and various classes in other .apks that implement that interface. I find the other classes using PackageManager's query methods and use Application#createPackageContext() to get the classloader for that context. I then load the class, create a new instance and try to cast it to my interface, which I know it definitely implements. When I try to cast, it throws a class cast exception. I tried various things like loading the interface first, using Class#asSubclass, etc, none of which work. Class#getInterfaces() shows the interface is implemented. My code is below: PackageManager pm = getPackageManager(); List<ResolveInfo> lr = pm.queryIntentServices(new Intent("com.example.some.action"), 0); ArrayList<MyInterface> list = new ArrayList<MyInterface>(); for (ResolveInfo r : lr) { try { Context c = getApplication().createPackageContext(r.serviceInfo.packageName, Context.CONTEXT_IGNORE_SECURITY | Context.CONTEXT_INCLUDE_CODE); ClassLoader cl = c.getClassLoader(); String className = r.serviceInfo.name; if (className != null) { try { Class<?> cls = cl.loadClass(className); Object o = cls.newInstance(); if (o instanceof MyInterface) { //fails list.add((MyInterface) o); } } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } // some exceptions removed for readability } } catch (NameNotFoundException e1) { e1.printStackTrace(); }

  • .NET: Calling GetInterface method of Assembly obj with a generic interface argument

    - by Khnle
    I have the following interface: public interface PluginInterface<T> where T : MyData { List<T> GetTableData(); } In a separate assembly, I have a class that implements this interface. In fact, all classes that implement this interface are in separate assemblies. The reason is to architect my app as a plugin host, where plugin can be done in the future as long as they implement the above interface and the assembly DLLs are copied to the appropriate folder. My app discovers the plugins by first loading the assembly and performs the following: List<PluginInterface<MyData>> Plugins = new List<PluginInterface<MyData>>(); string FileName = ...;//name of the DLL file that contains classes that implement the interface Assembly Asm = Assembly.LoadFile(Filename); foreach (Type AsmType in Asm.GetTypes()) { //Type type = AsmType.GetInterface("PluginInterface", true); // Type type = AsmType.GetInterface("PluginInterface<T>", true); if (type != null) { PluginInterface<MyData> Plugin = (PluginInterface<MyData>)Activator.CreateInstance(AsmType); Plugins.Add(Plugin); } } The trouble is because neither line where I am getting the type as by doing Type type = ... seems to work, as both seems to be null. I have the feeling that the generic somehow contributes to the trouble. Do you know why?

  • Question about Displaying Documents and the CQWP in MOSS 2007

    - by Psycho Bob
    My organization is in the process of converting our intranet over to a SharePoint solution. Part of this intranet will be the movement and organization of all our internal documents. Currently, we have 11 pages of document links, each with its own subheadings. So far I have it set where each document has a custom field called "Page" with a check box list of all the document pages on the intranet site. On each individual page, I have setup a Content Query Web Part that displays the documents that have the corresponding Page value set (i.e. if a document Page value has been checked for "HR" it will appear on the HR page). The goal of this setup is to allow the nontechnical personal who will be responsible for the maintenance of the documents to be able to upload new documents to the documents list and note on which pages they should appear on without having to manually update the pages themselves. The problem that I am having is that I cannot seem to find a good way to sort the documents into their subheadings once they are on the appropriate page. I could create individual check boxes for each page/subheading combination, but this would create a list of approximately 50-75 items. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could accomplish this, either via CQWP or by different means? Goals/Requirements of Installation Allow Intranet documents to be maintained by nontechnical personnel Display documents on the appropriate pages without user having to edit actual page or web part Denote document page location using user settable document attributes (if possible) Maintain current intranet organization and workflow Use only one document list without subdirectories NOTE: I am aware that this is not the most efficient or elegant way to do things, but these are the requirements I have been given for the project.

  • Firefox 4 show tools menu in button interface

    - by chris.nullptr
    I like the extra vertical space provided by the latest firefox beta (4b9). However, the button interface doesn't give you access to the tools menu. I know that I can either temporarily enable the menubar by holding down the ALT key, but flipping a flag in about:config would be preferable. Does such a flag exist? Edit: I want to be able to access the tools menu from the new button interface like you can with Bookmarks, History, Options, and Help.

  • Windows Server Shares web interface?

    - by Lazlow
    At work and home, I use Server 2003 with Windows Shares. We also have a couple of Netgear ReadyNAS appliances at work, managed via the web interface. Is there a built-in Web Interface for managing Shares, or a free one available - for use in Server 2003 (or 2008)? The reason I ask is that it would be good to manage the Shares via the Web, rather then RDP onto the Server each time - and would allow other users to treat it as a NAS.

  • Using iptables to forward traffic destined for specific ip via specific interface

    - by shapeshifter
    I want to forward traffic destined for a specific ip from my internal network via a specific interface. I have two interfaces which are currently load balanced. I need all requests for a certain ip to go out via eth0 otherwise my external ip changes and sessions are dropped. eg. all requests from 10.1.1.1/24 to ip 11.22.33.44 on port 443 must go out via interface eth0. How can I do this with iptables?

  • Conflicting ip routes with local table on attaching a virtual network interface

    - by user1071840
    I have an EC2 instance with these ip rules: $ sudo ip rule show 0: from all lookup local 32766: from all lookup main 32767: from all lookup default I can attach an elastic network interface to it with a private IP. Say the IP of my machine is 10.1.3.12 and the IP of the interface is 10.1.1.190. As soon as I attach the interface to my machine a new entry is added to the routing policy and local routing table: sudo ip rule show 0: from all lookup local 32765: from 10.1.1.190 lookup 10003 32766: from all lookup main 32767: from all lookup default $ sudo ip route show table local broadcast 10.1.1.0 dev eth3 proto kernel scope link src 10.1.1.190 local 10.1.1.190 dev eth3 proto kernel scope host src 10.1.1.190 broadcast 10.1.1.255 dev eth3 proto kernel scope link src 10.1.1.190 broadcast 10.1.3.0 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.1.3.12 local 10.1.3.12 dev eth0 proto kernel scope host src 10.1.3.12 broadcast 10.1.3.255 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.1.3.12 broadcast 127.0.0.0 dev lo proto kernel scope link src 127.0.0.1 local 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo proto kernel scope host src 127.0.0.1 local 127.0.0.1 dev lo proto kernel scope host src 127.0.0.1 broadcast 127.255.255.255 dev lo proto kernel scope link src 127.0.0.1 I can send traffic to this ENI directly from a host that can have the same IP as the host the ENI is attached to. This is where the problem starts. I ran tcpdump on the port in question and saw multiple SYNs going to the ENI with src '10.1.3.12' and destination '10.1.1.190' but didn't see even a single ACK. In my understanding if ACKs were being sent from the ENI they'd have destination as 10.1.3.12 i.e. the same as the local machine's IP and such packets will now be routed as local packets matching local routing policy: local 10.1.3.12 dev eth0 proto kernel scope host src 10.1.3.12 I'd like to send all the packets originating from 10.1.1.190 (my ENI) to go back on the same interface i.e. eth3 in this case. Contents of the nee table 10003 are: $ sudo ip route show table 10003 default via 10.1.1.1 dev eth3 I think I can do the following: I don't know if its possible but probably decrease the priority of local table so the packets match the table 10003. Use iptables to mangle these packets and update the local table route to include the mark information But I'm not sure if these are the right approaches.

  • Big Data – Operational Databases Supporting Big Data – Key-Value Pair Databases and Document Databases – Day 13 of 21

    - by Pinal Dave
    In yesterday’s blog post we learned the importance of the Relational Database and NoSQL database in the Big Data Story. In this article we will understand the role of Key-Value Pair Databases and Document Databases Supporting Big Data Story. Now we will see a few of the examples of the operational databases. Relational Databases (Yesterday’s post) NoSQL Databases (Yesterday’s post) Key-Value Pair Databases (This post) Document Databases (This post) Columnar Databases (Tomorrow’s post) Graph Databases (Tomorrow’s post) Spatial Databases (Tomorrow’s post) Key Value Pair Databases Key Value Pair Databases are also known as KVP databases. A key is a field name and attribute, an identifier. The content of that field is its value, the data that is being identified and stored. They have a very simple implementation of NoSQL database concepts. They do not have schema hence they are very flexible as well as scalable. The disadvantages of Key Value Pair (KVP) database are that they do not follow ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) properties. Additionally, it will require data architects to plan for data placement, replication as well as high availability. In KVP databases the data is stored as strings. Here is a simple example of how Key Value Database will look like: Key Value Name Pinal Dave Color Blue Twitter @pinaldave Name Nupur Dave Movie The Hero As the number of users grow in Key Value Pair databases it starts getting difficult to manage the entire database. As there is no specific schema or rules associated with the database, there are chances that database grows exponentially as well. It is very crucial to select the right Key Value Pair Database which offers an additional set of tools to manage the data and provides finer control over various business aspects of the same. Riak Rick is one of the most popular Key Value Database. It is known for its scalability and performance in high volume and velocity database. Additionally, it implements a mechanism for collection key and values which further helps to build manageable system. We will further discuss Riak in future blog posts. Key Value Databases are a good choice for social media, communities, caching layers for connecting other databases. In simpler words, whenever we required flexibility of the data storage keeping scalability in mind – KVP databases are good options to consider. Document Database There are two different kinds of document databases. 1) Full document Content (web pages, word docs etc) and 2) Storing Document Components for storage. The second types of the document database we are talking about over here. They use Javascript Object Notation (JSON) and Binary JSON for the structure of the documents. JSON is very easy to understand language and it is very easy to write for applications. There are two major structures of JSON used for Document Database – 1) Name Value Pairs and 2) Ordered List. MongoDB and CouchDB are two of the most popular Open Source NonRelational Document Database. MongoDB MongoDB databases are called collections. Each collection is build of documents and each document is composed of fields. MongoDB collections can be indexed for optimal performance. MongoDB ecosystem is highly available, supports query services as well as MapReduce. It is often used in high volume content management system. CouchDB CouchDB databases are composed of documents which consists fields and attachments (known as description). It supports ACID properties. The main attraction points of CouchDB are that it will continue to operate even though network connectivity is sketchy. Due to this nature CouchDB prefers local data storage. Document Database is a good choice of the database when users have to generate dynamic reports from elements which are changing very frequently. A good example of document usages is in real time analytics in social networking or content management system. Tomorrow In tomorrow’s blog post we will discuss about various other Operational Databases supporting Big Data. • Remove All Nodes with (nodeName = "script") from a Document Fragment *before placing it in dom*

    - by Matrym
    My goal is to remove all <[script] nodes from a document fragment (leaving the rest of the fragment intact) before inserting the fragment into the dom. My fragment is created by and looks something like this: range = document.createRange(); range.selectNode(document.getElementsByTagName("body").item(0)); documentFragment = range.cloneContents(); sasDom.insertBefore(documentFragment, credit); document.body.appendChild(documentFragment); I got good range walker suggestions in a separate post, but realized I asked the wrong question. I got an answer about ranges, but what I meant to ask about was a document fragment (or perhaps there's a way to set a range of the fragment? hrmmm). The walker provided was: function actOnElementsInRange(range, func) { function isContainedInRange(el, range) { var elRange = range.cloneRange(); elRange.selectNode(el); return range.compareBoundaryPoints(Range.START_TO_START, elRange) <= 0 && range.compareBoundaryPoints(Range.END_TO_END, elRange) >= 0; } var rangeStartElement = range.startContainer; if (rangeStartElement.nodeType == 3) { rangeStartElement = rangeStartElement.parentNode; } var rangeEndElement = range.endContainer; if (rangeEndElement.nodeType == 3) { rangeEndElement = rangeEndElement.parentNode; } var isInRange = function(el) { return (el === rangeStartElement || el === rangeEndElement || isContainedInRange(el, range)) ? NodeFilter.FILTER_ACCEPT : NodeFilter.FILTER_SKIP; }; var container = range.commonAncestorContainer; if (container.nodeType != 1) { container = container.parentNode; } var walker = document.createTreeWalker(document, NodeFilter.SHOW_ELEMENT, isInRange, false); while (walker.nextNode()) { func(walker.currentNode); } } actOnElementsInRange(range, function(el) { el.removeAttribute("id"); }); That walker code is lifted from: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2690122/remove-all-id-attributes-from-nodes-in-a-range-of-fragment PLEASE No libraries (ie jQuery).
