• Sql server 2000 replication error

  Good morning, I have a sql server 2000 machine, with SP4. I have a transactional replication. A keep receving this error message: The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'servername' the logreader stops responding.When i click start it starts fine, and the replication starts fine.And then, works for hours, and the problem comes back. In the begining i though it could be timeouts, but i already set a couple of parameters in the logreader profile,like querytimeout/readbatchsize. Sometimes when the logreader stops,it generates a dump, but not always. In event viewer, it appears this message: 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=1985 Failed Assertion = 'startLSN = m_curLSN'. 18052 : Error: 3624, Severity: 20, State: 1. 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=2223 Failed Assertion = 'm_noOfScAlloc == 0'. I also executed checkdb in the databases, and they are fine. have you every experienced something similar? thanks in advance, Renato Alves.

• Can't login to SQL Server after moving machine to different office/domain

  Our company has just been bought and the over the weekend I have brought up the last few machines to plug into their network (they are under a different Windows Domain). The last machine is our Vault system and the SQL Server was using Windows Authentication. I have plugged it into their network and its working fine, but i cannot connect to SQL Server with Management Studio and, I fear, no backup jobs will also be working. When I try to login under Windows Auth, it has the user name of "NEWDOMAIN\Administrator" (greyed out) and then presents a "login failed" message with error code "18456". Can anyone help me with this, or will I just have to reinstall SQL Server, Vault and restore the backup I took before the move?

• Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

  I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page). Any ideas anyone?

• Performance problems on RDC to our Terminal-Server Win2008 R2

  Hello, we have a new win2008-R2 (2x Xeon X5570, 32GB RAM). There I have installed the terminal-server roles, thats all OK. Currently 5 users are working at this server, but all get a very low performance in their remote-desktop session. Sometime it takes 1-2 seconds till the keyboard-inputs will be performed and shown. At the clients I run RDP v 6.1 We have also an older TS-server (based on Win2003 with an Opteron-CPU), there are working about 20 users at the same time. There I do not have the troubles with the inputs at the remote-desktop sessions. Both servers are connected to the same gigabit-switch. Any ideas what could cause the troubles at the Win2008 R2?   In my organization, the main server is Windows Small Business 2011. It uses a WMI service (I think) to get the Security and Update status of computers on the network. I have a Server 2008 virtual machine in VirtualBox with bridged network adapter. The SBS will not correctly get the status of, nor the operating system of, the Server 2008 VM. What settings do I have wrong / can I actually do this for a virtual machine in the first place? -- I do not know what further information might be needed, just ask and I will post.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Upgrade via Remote Desktop

  Is it possible to do an in-place upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 using only Remote Desktop? My plan is to extract WS 2012 installation iso file to C:\WS2012 and run the setup. After restart Remote Desktop connection will be lost, but will it be restored later? Is setup going to automatically install everything, restart, run WS 2012 and start listening for RDP connections? Server is rented and I would like to save the KVM fee. I read here that it's possible to upgrade WS 2008 to WS 2008 R2 like that. Thanks!

• Windows Server 2008 r2 FTP blocking outside connections

  I have a windows server 2008r2 running IIS 7.5. I am trying to setup a FTP-server in IIS but I'm running into some annoying problems. Setting up the server works fine but when I try to connect from a remote client the connection times out. I have tried to connect to the FTP-server from the localhost and it works flawlessly. I figured that it should be some trouble with the firewall so I went into firewall settings and disabled the Public Profile and my remote connections worked! In my inbound rules there are rules for FTP-connections to allow all profiles etc. I guess they are made automatically when setting up the FTP-server. Anyone got any idea how to allow remote connections without turning off the public firewall?

• Can only connect to sql server express 2012 via named pipes

  I have sql server express 2012 installed on windows 2008, locally everything works just fine i can connect via tcpip and named pipes. Remotely i can connect with ssms only using named pipes. I have tried disabling the firewall on both sides to eliminate blocking traffic. i have toggled the tcpip setting on and off (i read somewhere that they got it working just but flipping them off and back on). I have double/triple checked all the settings that i'm aware of and everything seems to be correct. Tcp is enabled Tcp port is set to 1433, udp port is set to 1434 Server has static ip Start up log says: Server is listening on [ 'any' 1433]. Firewall rules are in place Any suggestions on things that i can look into? i have really just run out of ideas.

• How to script printer creation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered print server?

  As per subject. I've found some ways of scripting printer creation on Windows print servers using WMI, but it looks like WMI doesn't support clustered print servers (or clustered servers at all). The scripts in C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts are useless because, they are not cluster-aware and end up creating the printers on the active cluster node (just like using WMI). The only tool I found that was able to work on a clustered print server is printui.exe (shortcut for rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry), but it can't create TCP printing ports: it can only add printers if the port already exists. How can I completely script printer creation (including TCP printing ports!) on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2 print server?

• SQL Server database constantly restarting

  We have SQL Server 2008 Express installed on a Windows 2003 server. Looking at the event log, one of the databases appears to be restarting anywhere from every couple seconds to every 15 to 30 minutes. This server hosts about half a dozen databases; the problem is with only one. This database is also the onle one comprised of multiple schemas (not just dbo). There are thousands of events going back several months. There doesn't seem to be any affect on the website using the database, nor does any data appear to be corrupted or compromised. I'm not a DBA, so I don't even know where to look for causes to this. Any suggestions?

• If a SQL Server Replication Distributor and Subscriber are on the same server, should a PUSH or PULL subsciption be used?

  Thanks in advance for any help. I'm setting up a new Microsoft SQL Server replication and I have the Distributor and Subscriber running on the same server. The Publisher is on a remote server (as it is a production database and MS recommends that for high volumes, the Distributor should be remote). I don't know much about the inner workings of PUSH vs PULL subscriptions, but my gut tells me that a PUSH subscription would be less resource intensive because (1) the Distributor is already remote, so this shouldn't negatively effect the Publisher and (2) pushing the transactions from the Distributor to the Subscriber is more efficient than the Subscriber polling the Distribution database. Does any one have any resources or insight into PUSH vs PULL which would recommend one over the other? Is there really going to be that big of a difference in performance / reliability / security?

  Hi folks, currently, we're using TFS2010 at our office and we're about to move. Part of that move is a split of teams. Our team will get their own servers. So we need to build our own TFS server and add our current projects to that. Right now, our TFS server exists on TWO servers - one for TFS and one for our Continuous Integration .. i think that's a build controller or something. That really suxs for us - having TWO servers instead of one for all our source control. We love CI and how it works (after the massive massive pain it was to get our VS2010 solution to CI + web Deploy) ... but it does work. So - can we do this with ONE server? Also, we don't want to have an Active Directory. Will this also work?

• How to make a legacy system time-zone sensitive?

  I need to implement time zones in a very large and old Delphi system, where there's a central SQL Server database and possibly hundreds of client installations around the world in different time zones. The application already interacts with the database by only using the date/time of the database server. So, all the time stamps saved in both the database and on the client machines are the date/time of the database server when it happened, never the time of the client machine. So, when a client is about to display the date/time of something (such as a transaction) which is coming from this database, it needs to show the date/time converted to the local time zone. This is where I get lost. I would naturally assume there should be something in SQL to recognize the time zone and convert a DateTime field dynamically. I'm not sure if such a thing exists though. If so, that would be perfect, but if not, I need to figure out another way. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? What is the proper way to ensure that I handle Dates and Times correctly in a legacy application?

• How can you connect to a SQL Server not on your domain?

  I have a test machine that's not allowed on our domain because we are testing corporately unsupported applications (SQL 2008 and Server 2008). I want to use management studio to connect to the SQL2008 server but can't get it working. I have authentication set to mixed-mode, I've checked 'allow remote connections to this server', but when I try to access it, I get the error A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53) Since it says the provider is Named Pipes, I enabled Named Pipes on the server, but still no dice. I've tried connecting to the system name, the IP, the system name\instance and IP\instance, all to no avail. Is what I'm trying to do not possible? Edit: Well, through some basic troubleshooting, I've found that I can't ping the server from my client computer, but I can ping the client computer from the server? They are both plugged into the same switch, and are sitting next to each other. The windows firewall on the server is turned on, is there some specific settings I need to enable? DAH! So it was the firewall blocking me. How can I enable the firewall and still connect?

• Access Windows Home Server from an Ubuntu Computer on your Network

  If you’re a Windows Home Server user, there may be times when you need to access it from an Ubuntu machine on your network. Today we take a look at the process of accessing files on your home server from Ubuntu. Note: In this example we’re using Windows Home Server with PowerPack 3, and Ubuntu 10.04 running on a home network. Access WHS from Ubuntu To access files on your home server from Ubuntu, click on Places then select Network. You should now see your home server listed in the Network folder as well as other Windows machines…double-click the server to access it. If you don’t see your server listed, you might need to go into Windows Network \ Workgroup and find it there. You’ll be prompted to enter in the correct credentials for WHS just as you would when accessing it from a Windows machine. It’s your choice if you want to have the password remembered or not…make your selection and click Connect. Now you will see the available folders on your home server. In this example we signed in with Administrator credentials, so we have access to everything. Double-click on the folder share you want to access content from…here we see MS Office documents on the server. Or, here we take a look at a music folder with various MP3 files which you can make Ubuntu play. You can access the files directly from the server, provided there is a Linux app that can handle the file type. In this example we opened a Word document in OpenOffice. Here we’re playing an MKV movie file from the server in Totem Movie Player.   You can easily search for files on the server as well… If you want to store your Ubuntu files on WHS it’s just a matter of dragging them to the correct WHS folder you want them in. If you’re using an Ubuntu computer on your home network and need to access files from Windows Home Server, luckily it’s a straight-forward process. You’ll often have to find the correct software to use Windows files, but even that’s getting much easier with version 10.04. • Do I need to create my own or use a commercial server for the features and matchmaking options I want my game to support?

  So I'm developing an indie turn-based game for iOS and, in coding up a Game Center matchmaking class, I'm starting to question whether Game Center is even the best choice for what I want this game to do. I need to figure out whether I need to create my own server, invest in a preexisting client or server service, or if I even need to use a server at all. If I do need to use a ready-made service other than Game Center, which server would accomodate my game's needs best? I have limited resources and funds. Here is the list of features I want my game to support, ideally: Turn-based gameplay (a la "with Friends" and "with Buddies" games) Smart matchmaking (matching users up with other players of comparable skill/achievements) Random matchmaking Facebook matchmaking Specific username matchmaking Contact list matchmaking A way to select what "type" of match you want to challenge an opponent to. (In random, smart, and Facebook matchmaking, there will be different "wagers" the player can make. [e.g. "I wanna play a random opponent for 1000 points. Now, I wanna play my Facebook buddy for 1,000,000 points."] There will be a predetermined range of amounts you can play for. It won't be customizable.) Buddies list capability (Game-buddies, as opposed to contacts and Facebook) A higher concurrent game cap than Game Center offers (which I still can't really find a straight answer on) Scalability (it should support 2 or 20,000,000 players) Objective-C compatibility Flexibility (for all the stuff I haven't thought of yet) Am I dreaming, here? Is there even a service that can handle all of these features? Do I need to invest months in learning a networking language to build my own? If so, how much would I need to spend on hardware? I've been looking around all morning and, so far, the only seemingly viable option is SmartFox. Under "Everything and the kitchen sink" section here, it says they support "virtual world with Zones, Rooms and RoomGroups, create complex game challenges, send invitations, manage buddy lists, create custom permission profiles, oversee the security aspects and tons more." http://www.smartfoxserver.com/overview/platform Is there an option that Im just overlooking? Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Sorry for the long poast. One last question: Does anyone know which server Dice with Buddies uses? I was experimenting with how many concurrent games I could get going and my ADHD kicked in at about 80 games. 80 concurrent games would be great for my game, but again, I need the other features I mentioned too.   I was creating some custom rollups on some of our event calendars and came across a very odd bug when trying to grab only the date component of the built-in Start Time field. One's first inclination will be to create a calculated column and give it the formula... =[Start Time]... and then assign its output type to be "Date Only." This works well until a user adds an All Day Event. For reasons unexplainable, the All Day Event flag causes your =[Start Time] to display the date minus one day. Here is an example of this in action:  Start Date and Time, Duration, Start Date Value and Start Day are all calculated fields. Notice how the Start Date and Time (=[Start Time]) is reporting 6:00PM of the previous day. The Start Date Value (=[Start Time] - Output Type: Number) confirms this (.75 = 6:00 PM.) Curiously enough, the Duration (=[End Time]-[Start Time]) is properly reporting the duration between 12:00AM and 11:59PM. Why? I don't know. Perhaps it's somehow bound to the regional settings on the site, but I'm not interested in changing a global site setting for the sake of one calculated field.With this information at our disposal, our calculated column to display the date part of the start date needs to be modified to add one day to the [Start Time] field if an All Day Event is selected. To determine this, we use the Duration above to assume the item is an all-day event and change our formula to be:=IF(TEXT(([End Time]-[Start Time])-TRUNC(([End Time]-[Start Time]),0),"0.000000000")="0.999305556",[Start Time] + 1, [Start Time])This will work, but what happens when the user de-selects the "All Day Event" checkbox? The duration stays the same, but all other values begin reporting the correct time: Since our formula above is strictly based on an expected duration, it will add one to the correct date, causing the date 5/11/2010 to appear. Notice though that the raw value of the start time (in this case) is a non-fractional number (40,308) whereas the all-day event was being represented as 6:00 PM (.75) of the previous day. We can use this to add one more nested branch of logic to our calculation:=IF(TEXT(([End Time]-[Start Time])-TRUNC(([End Time]-[Start Time]),0),"0.000000000")="0.999305556",IF([Start Time]=ROUND([Start Time],0),[Start Time],[Start Time]+1),[Start Time]) I feel somewhat... dirty about having to resort to this kind of calculation in what SHOULD have been a simple =[Start Time] to extract the date part of the Start Time field, but there you have it. Make sure to shower extra longer after having used it.

• Testing and Validation – You Really Do Have The Time

  One of the great advantages in my role as a Technical Specialist here at Microsoft is that I get to work with so many great clients. I get to see their environments and how they use them, and the way they work with SQL Server. I’ve been a data professional myself for many years. Over that time I’ve worked with many database platforms, lots of client applications, and written a lot of code in many industries. For a while I was also a consultant, so I got to see how other shops did things as well. But because I now focus on a “set” base of clients (over 500 professionals in over 150 companies) I get to see them over a longer period of time. Many of them help me understand how they use the product in their projects, and I even attend some DBA regular meetings. I see the way the product succeeds, and I see when it fails. Something that has really impacted my way of thinking is the level of importance any given shop is able to place on testing and validation. I’ve always been a big proponent of setting up a test system and following a very disciplined regimen to make sure it will work in production for any new projects, and then taking the lessons learned into production as standards. I know, I know – there’s never enough time to do things right like this. Yet the shops I see that do it have the same level of work that they output as the shops that don’t. They just make the time to do the testing and validation and create a standard that they will follow in production. And what I’ve found (surprise surprise) is that they have fewer production problems. OK, that might seem obvious – but I’ve actually tracked it and those places that do the testing and best practices really do save stress, time and trouble from that effort. We all think that’s a good idea, but we just “don’t have time”. OK – but from what I’m seeing, you can gain time if you spend a little up front. You may find that you’re actually already spending the same amount of time that you would spend in doing the testing, you’re just doing it later, at night, under the gun. • Fatal error 9001 on shared SQL Server 2008

  I've asked this same question on StackOverflow, but I might actually have a better chance for an answer here so am posting here as well. I know this question has been asked here before, but none of the suggestions have worked for me. I have an ASP.NET MVC (v. 3) website on a shared server. The website was working fine for a few weeks now, until I started getting a Fatal Error 9001 error straight after login. Because this is a shared server, there are only very limited things I can do with the database (and I don't know that much about databases anyway). The help desk insist that there is nothing wrong with their server. I got various suggestions from them: Upgrading to the business plan because I am out of space (first suggestion) Even though the .mdb file is small, the .ldb can grow very quickly. The .ldb file is probably taking up all the space. I have 100MB available, the database size is 16.5MB. Can the .ldb file take up the remaining space? On querying this with the helpdesk, they admitted that my entire db is only 25MB. There is something wrong with my SQL queries and I should check the website. I'm using EF with linq to SQL. Everything was working fine until now... Can there be something that goes wrong in the queries that causes this sort of error? There is nothing wrong to be seen in the db logs, so this error cannot possibly have happened. I should log it next time it happens and contact again. I found some posts suggesting that restoring a DB backup can get rid of the issue. I do not have a recent backup, and can't take a new one because of a fatal error 9001 occurring. Since this is a shared server I have about 0 authority to execute anything against the DB (think CHECKDB, truncating the log, etc.). So I am at my wits end pretty much. What else can I do/try to get my website moving again?

• windows 2003 server : can't find a primary authoritative dns server for the name srv.domain1.local [

  I originally tried to rejoin a computer to a network which led to a "cannot find domain" error. The username/password box don't even come up. some tests i ran: I can ping the server, however I can't ping the domain name domain1.local. nslookup can't find the domain either. It looks to the isp's dns instead of my own to resolve the local machines. So i go to the dns and run netdiag.exe and gives me this error. • SQL Server installation leaves odd hotfix folders on the root

  I have about a dozen weirdly named folders, for example 5e812807b3e1b04248ed046794a01b, on my d: drive after installing SQL Server 2008. Inside each folder are two subfolders: 1033 and hotfixexpress \1033\eula.txt \1033\finalsql2005information.rtf \1033\hotfix.rll \1033\sqlhotfix.chm \1033\sqlse.rll \hotfixexpress\files\sqlexpr.exe I get access denied whenever I try to delete any of these files / folders. I tried again after stopping all SQL server services, without luck. Any ideas?

  I have 60 Gb of RAM on server. Windows 2008, 32bit with PAE. One Sql Server 2008 Express Instance can use 1 Gb of RAM. So if I install 60 instances, each can use 1 Gb of RAM, right? And the second question, what will be if I install 64bit system and use many Express instances?
