  • Ubuntu Variant / Linux Distros which uses least system resources (RAM, CPU)?

    I have a netbook (an older Asus EEEPC 1005HA) which I want to get rid of Windoze on (I like Windows, but I don't think it works well in a netbook environment). Basically, my question is which Ubuntu variant will use the least RAM and CPU running idle, and/or the same question except when running Firefox and Libreoffice Writer, say. I am also open to suggestions of non-Ubuntu Linux distros, but since this is AskUbuntu I thought the first question would be more appropriate. I have a disk drive which I can attach to the netbook, so it doesn't have to be a Ubuntu Variant / Linux Distro which solely boots from a USB drive. I have at my disposal: DVDs, DVD writer/ disk drive, 4gb flash drive, 8 gb flash drive I was thinking either Lubuntu or Archbang / Crunchbang but I would like some help from more knowledgable people Specs: Can't boot into it right now, but I think I have either Intel Atom N270 @1.60ghz OR Intel Atom N280 @1.66ghz (single core, I think) 2gb RAM 160 GB hard drive

  • Is it possible to use Back in Time with Ubuntu One without storing the back up files locally?

    I use Deja Dup as my back up tool. Love its simplicity and the fact that I can store my back up directly on my Ubuntu One account. Now I really like the flexibility of Back in Time, but I can not find a clean way to store my back up in Ubuntu One. Some threads suggest to use the Ubuntu One folder in your system, and that works, but it also keeps a local copy of the back up in my system, and I do not want that. Any work around for this?   • When trying running Ubuntu 12.10 off a usb drive, I encounter an error while prevent me from doing anything else

    The details are that I used Universal USB Installer version 1.9.1.8 from pendrivelinux.com to install ubuntu 12.10 onto a 4gb pendrive as per instruction on Ubuntu's website. However, after I boot with drive I am met with the following message: "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Pressing Ctrl Alt F1 doesn't allow me access and the options on the dialog box either send me through a loop returning me to the previous dialog or just leave me dead in the water. Pressing Ctrl Alt Del does however restart the computer if I am dead in the water, so ubuntu isn't COMPLETELY unresponsive... I feel I should mention that I'm trying to run this distribution on my netbook. I can't install it directly to the harddrive since I need my current Windows distribution for certain programs that don't quite agree with WINE yet.

  • Does Ubuntu One offer Windows Live Sync type services?

    I'm an Ubuntu convert from Windows and I'm liking it very much. One of the few things I miss in Windows is their Live Sync. I don't know what it's like now or whether it still exists, but at the time (2008/2009), Windows Live Sync lets you sync folders between computers without uploading contents on their server. That is, only the metadata of the subscribed folders are uploaded (things like changelog etc.). I really liked that, and I was wondering if Ubuntu One has an option that does the same thing? At the moment it only seems to have the option to upload all file contents on the web, and I'd rather not do that. If Ubuntu One doesn't have the service similar to Windows Live Sync as described above, then I really recommend it. I would greatly appreciate it if someone can point me to the right place to make my recommendations. Thanks in advance!

    I have a Linux Ubuntu desktop at home, ssh enabled, vnc server installed, router rule configured. It all works, and at home I can connect via the local network from my Mac. From the outside I can login via ssh. I've configured putty as follows: session: host name and port number connection ssh tunnel: forwarded ports: L5900|192.168.0.23 the local address is: 192.168.1.45 When I make the connection I can login to the remote machine. Then I open Remote Desktop Viewer. I click connect protocol: vnc host: ? use host as ssh tunnel: ? I don't know what to use for the last two options. Which ip-addresses should I use?

  • My boss decided to add a "person to blame" field to every bug report. How can I convince him that it's a bad idea?

    In one of the latest "WTF" moves, my boss decided that adding a "Person To Blame" field to our bug tracking template will increase accountability (although we already have a way of tying bugs to features/stories). My arguments that this will decrease morale, increase finger-pointing and would not account for missing/misunderstood features reported as bug have gone unheard. What are some other strong arguments against this practice that I can use? Is there any writing on this topic that I can share with the team and the boss? I find this sort of culture unacceptable to work in but want to try and change it before jumping ship. Any input is appreciated.

  • IE Display Bug, jQuery bug

    So I built some complex ajaxy jquery module on my homepage, with the help of "scrollable" from flowplayer.org. It works fine for me on Chrome, Opera, Firefox ... but of course IE is not playing friendly (regardless of the version, from my testing). Objects are not displaying exactly where they should, some are overlaying each other, and when a click a button some divs just disappear. However, if I resize the IE browser window up and down, the display mostly fixes itself. Then if I click on one of the buttons I made, it messes it up again. Until I resize the window again and it looks fine.   • Create Webmin user for an EC2 Instance

    I've setup an Amazon EC2 Instance, using the Ubuntu 12.04 AMI (ubuntu/images/ebs/ubuntu-precise-12.04-amd64-server-20120424 (ami-a29943cb)), and I'd like to get Webmin working (so I can setup a DNS). After following the installation instructions on Webmin's site, the installer says I can login with any username/pass of a user who has superuser access. The problem is that the EC2 instance only has 1 user "ubuntu", which can only login using SSH keys -- not a password! I've tried creating users manually and I can't login as those users (even via SSH), so I think it might be a permission thing provided by the AMI. Does anyone know the best way around setting up a login to my webmin?

  • samba share not on network after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04LTS. [migrated]

    I just upgraded an old Ubuntu box to 12.04LTS (machine named A-Ubuntu). This is an upgrade not a format re-install. All the accounts and config were preserved. The basic setup is a local network with 2 Ubuntu machines (let say A-Ubuntu, B-Ubuntu) and a MAC (C-MAC). Before the upgrade, all of them could see each other by their names not only the IP address. The local network has a D-Link Router where everybody is connected with RJ-45 wired etherenet (not wi-fi). Since the A-Ubuntu upgrade, we can't see this machine name on the Network and its name is not on machine list in the D-Link router anymore. We can see it's IP address only. I can't access A-Ubuntu from the other two by its name but I can ping it with its address (192.168.0.109). From A-Ubuntu, I can connect and see the shared samba folders on B-Ubuntu and C-MAC. But from B-Ubuntu and C-MAc, I can't connect to A-Ubuntu. Correct me if I'm wrong but this tells me that Samba should be fine and the real problem is that A-Ubuntu does not advertise its name on the Network so the D-Link does not have it in its table so nobody else finds it. After a lot of googling, I see that it is the job of avahi and mdns to do so. Those packages are running, I checked multiple config files for samba, avahi, mdns to see as if it is like the examples on the WEB and also similar to what I find on the working B-Ubuntu machine. This is the same. I did multiple service restart with samba, avahi, remove the firewall to make sure it does not block the hostname broadcast. I rebooted multiple time to make sure the update I was making were effective. Still, Can't see the A-Ubuntu name on the network. Any idea what it can be?, Where to look next?

  • Is it good practice to analyse who introduced each bug?

    I used to analyse performance of programmers in my team by looking at the issues they have closed. Many of the issues are of course bugs. And here another important performance aspect comes - who introduced the bugs. I am wondering, if creating a custom field in the issue tracking system "Blamed" for reporting the person who generated the problem, is a good practice. One one hand it seems ok to me to promote personal responsibility for quality and this could reduce the additional work we have due to careless programming. On the other hand this is negative, things are sometimes vague and sometimes there is a reason such us "this thing had to be done very quickly due to a client's...". What to you think?

  • New spreadsheet accompanying SmartAssembly 6.0 provides statistics for prioritizing bug fixes

    One problem developers face is how to prioritize the many voices providing input into software bugs. If there is something wrong with a function that is the darling of a particular user, he or she tends to want action - now! The developer's dilemma is how to ascertain that the problem is major or minor, and when it should be addressed. Now there is a new spreadsheet accompanying SmartAssembly that provides exactly that information in an objective manner. This might upset those used to getting their way by being the loudest or pushiest, but ultimately it will ensure that the biggest problems get the priority they deserve. Here's how it works: Feature Usage Reporting (FUR) in SmartAssembly 6.0 provides a wealth of data about how your software is used by its end-users, but in the SmartAssembly UI the data isn't mined to its full extent. The new Excel spreadsheet for FUR extracts statistics from that data and presents them in easy-to-understand forms. I developed the spreadsheet feature in Microsoft Excel, using a fair amount of VBA. The spreadsheet connects directly to the database which stores the feature-usage data, and shows a wide variety of statistics and tables extracted from that data.  You want to know what percentage of users have used the 'Export as XML' button?  No problem.  How popular is v5.3 is compared to v5.1?  There's graphs for that. You need to know whether you have more users in Russia or Brazil? There's a big pie chart for that. I recently witnessed the spreadsheet in use here at Red Gate Software. My bug is exposed as minor While testing new features in .NET Reflector, I found a usability bug in the Refresh button and filed it in the Red Gate bug-tracking system. The bug was labelled "V.NEXT MINOR," which means it would be fixed in the next point release. Although I'm a professional tester, I'm not much different than most software users when they discover a bug that affects them personally: I wanted it fixed immediately. There was an ulterior motive at play here, of course. I would get to see my colleagues put the spreadsheet to work. The Reflector team loaded up the spreadsheet to view the feature-usage statistics that SmartAssembly collected for the refresh button. The resulting statistics showed that only 8% of users have ever pressed the Refresh button, and only 2.6% of sessions involve pressing the button. When Refresh is used, it's only pressed on average 1.6 times a session, with a maximum of 8 times during a session. This was in stark contrast to what I was doing as a conscientious tester: pressing it dozens of times per session. The spreadsheet provides evidence that my bug was a minor one. On to more serious things Based on the solid evidence uncovered by the spreadsheet, the Reflector team concluded that my experience does not represent that of the vast majority of Reflector's recorded users. The Reflector team had ample data to send me back to my desk and keep the bug classified as "V.NEXT MINOR." The team then went back to fixing more serious bugs. If I'm in the shoes of the user, I might not be thoroughly happy, but I cannot deny that the evidence clearly placed me in a very small minority.     I used chroot to install Debian Lenny on my Ubuntu desktop. I have now decided I will no longer be using Debian and so I want to remove Debian and install Ubuntu server in a chroot instead. My question is, I can simply remove the /chroot/debian/lenny folder and create a new chroot for Ubuntu server? or is there something else I need to do (I have read a bit about chroot but it does not answer this question)

  • Dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu

    Hello everyone, I've just received my Dell Studio 17 laptop, which comes with Windows 7 x64 preinstalled. I'm having quite a hard time installing ubuntu on it. First of all, here is how I partitioned the drive using GPartEd: |==Dell utility partition==|==Dell Recovery partition==|==Windows 7==|[==Ubuntu==|==Data partition==]| Where [] denotes an extended partition. Here are the steps I completed: I used GParted to create this structure, keeping windows 7 installed I booted ubuntu LiveCD, and installed it on the right partition I let it install grub automatically I rebooted intu ubuntu I went back to windows 7, no problems I then rebooted. Grub was gone. I used Super Grub Disk to restore grub, it didn't work. I tried to boot into ubuntu from supergrubdisk, but grub couldn't fint the boot folder I then reinstalled ubuntu, went through the same steps, but there SGD did boot my ubuntu I reverted to the previous version of grub, and installed it on my hard drive It worked, but trying to boot win7 got me the "No MBR, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot" error I used the windows 7 cd to restore the MBR (the auto wizard didn't work, had to rebuild the mbr from command line Now Ubuntu is gone. 7 works fine I read a lot about this, and realized that many people could simply not boot win7 again after encountering this problem. Now I'd like to restore GRUB, but I really won't go through the hassle of doing a full new cycle of installing/reinstalling everything again. Is there a GRUB guru around, to provide me with a detailed guide to not screwing everything up once again? Thanks a lot!

  • boot loading problem after wubi installation of Ubuntu 12.04 on Win7

    I was new in Ubuntu OS and I was just trying to use wubi windows installer to get a Ubuntu first for hands-on. I followed exactly the same as the instructions and after reboot win7, there is no Ubuntu selection in windows boot manager, with only Windows 7 showing there evilly -.- What I've found out was that the grub folder inside Ubuntu folder ( in my C:\ drive) was empty, either inside the ubuntu\disks\grub or ubuntu\install\grub. I thought this might be the reason why I could not load ubuntu during startup. Cause I've also looked into the EasyBCD settings, and ubuntu entry with Bootloader Path: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr was lying there peacefully, looking perfectly fine. However it was not in boot loader actually. Is there a way to restore the grub folder with grub2, or is there any way to fix this problem so that I can find the "Ubuntu" selection at windows startup? Very appreciate your help :) Henry

    Hello All, I'm in the mid of researching for one of the best hosting control panels. The server I run is Ubuntu and I have some experience with ISPConfig 2 & 3. Since I haven't explored any others available, what are the recommended ones for an Ubuntu server? I asked because I find that there seems to be some disabling and modifications required for an Ubuntu server if I need to use ispconfig which causes the server to change its actual way of running. It's quite good though, but any more recommended ones ? Something more organic? which doesn't require much breaking and changing. I'm not asking for the simple one, I don't mind going extra mile to install a powerful one but just try sticking with most Ubuntu's conventions will be an ideal one for me. And of course, if there happens to be something that meets the requirement as mentioned "Ubuntu conventions" and also simple to install at the same time, that'd be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

This test shows cookieContainer doesn't return any cookie for "site.com" but according to RFC it should return at least 2 cookies. Isn't it a bug? How make it to work?   • Upgraded from ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 issues

    I recently upgraded 12.04 to 12.10 ubuntu and then all hell broke loose. Being more specific, I have a Compaq machine and its hard disk is partitioned into 3 parts, so when I installed Ubuntu 10.04, I installed it in windows, since then have upgraded with each new ubuntu release via the update manager without any problems. I have installed the 64 bit versions. 12.10 downloaded via update manager, and initial downloading of packages was without problems, however, as it tried to install the packages, error messages appeared. The first was one about missing lib files, but I clicked to continue, since I am a relative novice on ubuntu. It continued, and during the restart process, when it was powering down, the computer hanged on the shutting down bit without rebooting for more than half an hour, so I manually shut down the machine and restarted it. Then a new error message appeared stating could not find disk, and I hit the manual fix option, and it now boots to an empty ubuntu desktop with my wallpaper but no launcher and the graphics appears as if this was put on a 640 x 480 resolution, and the screen no longer fits onto my 19" LCD. I had to use Ctrl-Alt-T to log out and then restart from there. How can I resolve this issue. Please help!
