• Can someone explain what causes extra heat in a CPU

  I have a hardware question about CPU and chips in general: what is causing the extra heat when CPUs are busy doing computations ? I thought that the CPUs would have a way to throttle themselves when they are not busy but it seems that only applies to some mobile CPUs, so my question is how do CPUs manage to generate less heats when performing less computations and what causes the heat in the hardware when the workload increases ?

• iTunes memory usage

  Why does iTunes use upwards of 70 megs of ram when it is minimized to my system tray playing music? -- Update -- I understand that iTunes is a resource hog :) What I'm trying to find out, is what part of iTunes is using all that ram. Is it the music library? If I have a smaller music library, will it use less ram? Is it loading all the Album Artwork into ram for some dumb reason? Additionally, is there any recommendations on what someone could do to reduce the amount of ram it is using?

• Hyper-V CPU Utilization, Good Tools?

  I just learned a ton from this post: Host CPU% doesn't include child VM CPU%, specifically I learned that both the 'host OS' and 'child VM' are siblings within the HyperVisor layer. Are there good utilities for 'watching' the total CPU and other resource counters at the HyperVisor (hardware) layer? I know perfmon (watching special Hyper-V CPU counters) is the standard answer, but I've stayed away from perfmon for ad-hoc monitoring. Is there a good OSS or free tools to 'watch' the resource utilization as I create multiple new VMs running on the server? I'm a developer, so if there aren't any good UI tools to surface this data I'd consider creating one, but only if needed. P.S. My specific scenario is I'm creating new web, SQL and back-end server VMs for new Windows 8 Server and SQL 2012 (entire application stack). I need to monitor them for utilization and know when I need to grow beyond 1 host (I'll need to split the VMs into separate hosts as I hit hardware limits of the 1st host, and diagnose problems).

• The cache is getting at full level so fast

  Please, the memory and the cache are getting to the full level quite quickly under my linux mint 9 - isadora system. I used Ubuntu and Debian before, and it was not causing this issue at all. At the current time i typing the following command frequently to empty the cache "echo 3 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches". Can someone explain this difference? But what is more important: I'd like to know how much memory a process is really using. I don't want to know the virtual memory size, but rather the resident memory plus swap of a process. I have also tried to output the format param "sz" of 'ps', but the sum of this is to high (5450 MB) (param 'size' gives 8323.45 MB). Are there any other options? I really want to use this, to determine which programs/processes are eating to much memory (and swap), to kill them, because hibernate might not be working if the swap partition is to little.

  My understanding is that when a cpu is in C0 state , the cpufreq governor decides what P-state the CPU should reside in .When a CPU goes idle, it falls from C0 state to a deeper C-state. The cpuidle govenor, say menu , takes over in deciding which C-state the CPU should go to , once the CPU goes idle . Is my understanding correct ?

• Virtual MS Sql Server not consuming enough CPU

  We have a Win2008 server 32 bit running as a virtual machine under ESX server. It has 6 CPU cores of 2Gz each and 4GB ram. It's running MS Sql Server 2008 R2 only. Problem: The server is heavily loaded and responds slowly. From windows taskmanagers point of view, it really looks overloaded, CPU wise. However, our external "cloud manager" says it's only using 2.5GHz worth of CPU-cycles in the cluster. I/O times looks "good". We have already tried to set the SQL servers number of working threads from 0(auto) to 256, to no effect. How to tune the VM host, guest or SQL to use all of it's alotted resources? Does it sound possible att all?

• How can we tell what driven the Private bytes spiking.

  I have websites running on .Net Framework 2.0 environment. For recent every day my website becomes slow at certain time and I need to recycle my app pool. I checked the log file found that the private bytes will spike during that time slot. Through some research I already know that the managed code and unmanaged code consists of Privates and we can identify which one cause the spike based on "Bytes in all heaps" counter. But I can't find a way to dig deeper. Is there any way that I can find out what driven my private bytes spike? How can we see what the private bytes are being used for? Thanks, Ronin

  Hello, Let's imagine that we have 8Gb of RAM on server. I'm mounting /dev/shm with 4Gb on board. mount -o remount,size=4G /dev/shm Will this memory be strictly reserved for shared memory or if /dev/shm is empty this memory could be used by regular applications (web server, php etc.)? PS:Sorry for my English. I'm asking it because I've just checked df -h and found tmpfs 6.0G 0 6.0G 0% /dev/shm on 8Gb RAM sever. I don't know who made this setup, but it seems to me awful.   Since my server is under a sustain DNS amplification attack (DDOS), I configured fail2ban and initially my outgoing traffic dropped markedly. Anyway, after a few hours (mostly +10), fail2ban uses about 75% ram and seems to be crashed in some way, because the outgoing traffic raises imediatly after. When I searched the web for the memory problem, I found some people complaining about high fail2ban memory usages as well. But the recommended solution, to insert an ulimit command into a fail2ban config file, did not change that much for me.

• PHP processes run one at a time, always taking 100% of one core

  We have seven websites written in PHP running on a Windows 2008 server with IIS 7.5. They are all very slow right now. When I look in Task Manager, I see around 10 php-cgi.exe processes, and they are all taking 0% of the CPU, except one, which is taking 25%. It's a quad-core server, so it's taking 100% of one core. If I watch for a few seconds, the process taking 25% will go to 0%, and a different php-cgi.exe process will jump to 25%. So all the php-cgi.exe processes are just lined up, waiting on a single core, and each process uses 100% of the processor when it can. Each of the 7 sites is in its own application pool in IIS, and we're using FastCGI. The PHP version is 5.3. Any ideas? Thanks!

• How would I measure the amount of RAM needed per Glassfish domain? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my capacity planning? In our test environment we have a lot of apps spread out over a few servers and Glassfish domains. To make versioning easier I would have liked to have one Glassfish domain per customer per app (kind of like a heavyweight version of lots of jetty instances). But I have heard that Glassfish is kind of heavy on the resources, and so I would need to measure approximately how many instances would fit in the available RAM. These are low-traffic/low load testing servers, so CPU is not really an issue, though RAM might be. How would I get an approximate measure of how much RAM is needed? This is one Glassfish 3 instance with one heavy EAR application deployed. top? jvmstats? ??

• Debug unstable Apache server under Debian

  Since yesterday my Apache server that runs on a Debian machine runs very unstable. Sometiems my websites load and sometimes not. I think it has to do with the memory since my Apache log is full of Out of memory (allocated 262144) (tried to allocate 4480 bytes). I also attached a screenshot of the memory graph. A server restart resolves the problem temporarily. I looked at the processes that are using memory but the biggest one is MySQL with 6.5%. Where else can look for the problem? Edit: I did a free -m right after rebooting and one about 2 hours later. • web sites leaking memory? IIS 7.5 Windows server 2008 R2

  I have several web sites on my windows 2008 server that have been working flawlessly for over a year. Just a few days ago I ran into an issue where my server stopped serving up pages on some of these sites for no apparent reason. I dug into it a little more today and I see that some of my sites (they're all asp.net mvc 3.0 sites), are consuming over 460MB of memory. Like I said, this just started the other day after a very long period of time of no issues at all. I have two questions: 1) is there a way to throttle how much memory is consumed by the w3wp process before I can force it to restart (restart the app pool for a particular site) so that it doesn't keep hogging all of the memory? 2) any ideas what could have caused this to start happening?

• MySQL Memory Limit Windows Server 2003

  I am running MySQL 5.0.51a on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition on an HP DL580 G4 with 3GB installed. One of my database tables has grown to 5.3 GB with an index file of 2.5 GB, which I believe is causing MySQL to be slow due to having to constantly load and unload the index file when updates are made to the table. The server itself seems to be performing OK because MySQL is only using about 500MB of memory (there are other apps running on the system, but MySQL uses the most memory). The table is fairly active with new records getting adding all during day but no deletes, ever. The MySQL server has up to 600 connections allowed, but only small number (10 or 20) would actually be writing to this table. I increased the memory limits in MySQL but since the max connections is so high I don't think I can give each connection 1GB without risking a problem. Is there some tuning that would let just certain connections get a lot of memory? So I have started to look for alternatives to avert the crisis I know is coming soon. Some of the options I have: Upgrade to Server 2003 Enterprise to install 64GB of memory. Question: would 32 bit MySQL be able to access more than 2GB? Would that be 2GB per thread? That would still be smaller than the index table size so it might not solve the problem completely, but it would be better than now. Upgrade to Server 200x 64 bit and MySQL 64 bit. Switch to a *nix 64 bit server. If anybody has suggestions for things to do in the meantime, opinions on which way to go, or other things that I have overlooked I would appreciate the help. Thanks
