• How to get a "Maximize" button in every window in GNOME Fallback

  Just installed Ubuntu 11.10 (AMD64), and immediately switched back to GNOME with GNOME Fallback. I'm searching for a feature which provided a "maximise" button in every window, even ones which should have only the "close" button. In older Ubuntu versions this feature was activated when switching from "None" to "Normal" in "Visual Effects": But now, that window is out, and I can't find that feature. I guess it's somewhere in CompizConfig, but I've searched there with no result. Does anyone know what's the feature I'm searching for?

• Is there some file browser that uses low level functions to browse hard disk?

  I have Windows 7, NTFS hard disk. I have detected rootkit files but can't delete them through Windows explorer, obviously because they are not visible. Is there some other file browser that is using low level function calls, lower that win api, so that I can try to see and study these files before removal. I know the exact locations. I know that I can load some live CD and delete them, but I wonder about the first possible solution.

• Wondering about the Windows 7 serial number my laptop has, and its uses.

  So that's the serial number of my pre-installed windows copy, I take it. But am I allowed to use it again when, say, I don't know, my system gets crippled by a sneaky virus? If I format my computer and install windows starter again from a USB drive (speculating. I've never format before, I suppose is completely possible) Is that serial number still valid? In any case, it crashed my firefox 3.5.4. (or to be more precise, made it unusable) ... I don't know about other browsers. • Is there a feature in Nagios that allows Memory between checks?

  There are various instances where there are values I want to monitor with Nagios, and I don't care as much about the value itself, but rather how it compares to the previous value. For instance, I wrote one to check the fail counters in OpenVZ. In this case, I didn't care about the value that much, but rather I cared if the value increased. Another example might be switch ports, I would be most interested to get alerted about the change of state of a port (Although perhaps a trap would be better for this one). For my OpenVZ script, I used a temp file, but I am wondering if there is a better way? Maybe Nagios has some variables that plugins (check scripts) can access that are persistent across checks?

  I have a custom Powershell module that I wrote for various tasks. Now I want to craft a workflow whose activities will use commands from the module. Here's my test workflow: workflow New-TestWorkflow{ InlineScript { Import-Module custom.ps1 New-CommandFromTheModule } } Then I run the workflow with: New-TestWorkflow -PSComputerName remoteComputer When I do this, the import fails because it can't find the module. I imagine this is because the workflow is executing on the remote machine, where my module does not exist. I can see myself running this across many machines so I'd really rather not have to install this module and maintain it on all of the machines. Is there some way to have my module in a central place and use it in workflows?

• IP Helper service uses 50-60% CPU every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds on Windows 7

  I have checked everything - all the processes in the process explorer. IP Helper service is causing CPU usage of over 50 % every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds then comes back to normal. In the task manager, the process is svchost.exe and the service is iphlpsvc. • Automatically kill processes that over time uses 95%+ of resources? Ubuntu

  I don't know about you're computer but when mine is working properly no process is sucking 95%+ over time. I would like to have some failsafe that kills any processes behaving like that. This comes to mind because when I woke up this morning my laptop had been crunching all night long on a stray chromium child process. This can probably be done as a cron job, but before I make it a full time job creating something like this I'd thought I should check here. :) I hate reinventing the wheel.

• Getting Out Of Memory: Java heap space, but while viewing heap space it max uses 50 MB

  Hi! I'm using ASANT to run a xml file which points to a NARS.jar file. (i do not have the project file of the NARS.jar) I'm getting "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. I used VisualVM to look at the heap while running the NARS.jar, and it says that it max uses 50 MB of the heapspace. I've set the initial and max size of heapspace to 512 MB. Does anyone have an ide of what could be wrong? I got 1 GB physical Memory and created a 5 GB pagefile (for test purpose). Thanks in advance.

  I'm trying to figure out what type of database uses these specific .dat and .idx files. When I view the .dat files using a binary file reader I see Record Schema followed by somewhat decipherable data names. A little further down I see Key Schema whch apears to be a comma separated list of clear text references. Each .dat file has a matching .idx file. Each .dat file contains the phrase "Record Schema" and "Key Schema" as described above. How would I convert these files so I can use them in an SQL database?

  Just came across FlockDB graph database. Details at github /flockDB. Twitter claims it uses FlockDB for the following: Twitter runs FlockDB on a large cluster of machines. we use it to store social graphs (who follows whom, who blocks whom) and secondary indices at twitter. At first glance, setup and trying it doesn't look straight forward. Have anyone already used it / setup this? If so, please answer the following general queries. What kind of applications is it better suited for? (Twitter claims it is simple and very rough, it remains to see what it meant though) How is FlockDB better than other graph db / noSQL db. Have you setup FlockDB, used it for a application? Early advices any? Note: I am evaluating the FlockDB and other graph databases mainly for learning them. I found a blog post that recommends adding another custom field like "FileName" and then using a item reciever to populate the custom field with the value from the Name field but that seems cheesy. • WPF Datatemplate + ItemsControl each item uses > 1 MB Memory?

  Does that sound right to anyone???? I have an ItemsControl that displays data from a custom object that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged. The DataTemplate consists of: Border 3 buttons 5 textboxes An ellipse A Bindable RichTextBox (custom class that inherits from RichTextBox... so I could make Document a dependency property (to support binding)) Several grids and stackpanels for layout It uses: Styles (stored in a resource dictionary higher up the tree) Styles affect: colors, thicknesses, and text properties: which are data-bound to a "settings" class that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged, so the user can change display settings That's it! So what gives? I've also noticed that when I empty and remove the ItemsControl, memory isn't freed. over 5000 instances of "CommandBindingCollection" and "WeakReference" are CREATED (using ANTS profiler). And huge number of EffectiveValueEntry objects are created too. So really, what gives!!! :-) Thanks for your insight! Management needs this project soon but in its current state, it's unreleasable.

• Android: Maps - Best way to provide 'search for location' feature?

  Hello all, I've got an android app that uses a map activity and serves up content based on map location. I'm looking for a way to allow the user to search for a location by name (anything from 'New York' to 'Eiffel Tower') - e.g. have a text input field into which they could type 'Rome' - after pressing a button, the user would be brought to the coordinates of Rome on the map. What would be the best way to go about this? I've looked into the google geocoding api (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/geocoding/), but it has limitations of 2,500 geolocation requests per day - I'm presuming this is per API key? Or is it per user/source IP? 2,500 requests for one android app woudln't last long. Ideally, I would be able to search for English and foreign names of countries. Thanks in advance! r3mo

• How can I add a "Loading...Please wait..." feature?

  I have a very simple table on my website, that displays different URL's. I have an input field where I can type in a URL and click 'Submit' to add additional URL's. However, I want to add an MD5 grabbing feature to this, using @md5_file(); to grab the MD5 of the URL and check to make sure it's the MD5 it should be, before adding it to the database. However it may take a few seconds for it to grab the MD5 and compare it, so I would like to add a little bit of text, like "Processing...Please wait..." while it does the comparing, and then once it's compared I want that text to go away. I've never done this before, or even though about doing it so I have no idea where to start. I'll go ahead and put javascript as a tag for this, since I'm guessing it would be done with javascript, but I really have no idea. I don't think it's possible with PHP, but again, I have no idea. Any suggestions?
